Chase closing accounts for EEA addresses (Jan 2027) — What are my options?

TL;DR: Chase is closing my U.S. bank accounts due to new 2027 EU banking rules (CRD VI) because my primary address is in Germany. I still need a U.S. account to pay student loans and credit cards. Looking for alternative banks or fintech solutions that allow EEA addresses.

I'm an American and I've lived in Germany for 2 years and will continue to be here for about another 2 years. I've been so thankful for Chase because they gave me the option to have a foreign phone number and address while maintaining my U.S. account. I have several things I still absolutely need a U.S. bank account for: paying down U.S. credit card balances, filing U.S. tax returns, and making student loan payments.

Unfortunately, I just received an email today stating that starting January 2027, if my primary address is in the European Economic Area (EEA), they'll be unable to continue servicing my U.S. account(s) and will need to close them.

I understand that this is the result of the new EU banking rules (CRD VI) restricting non-EU banks, but it puts me in an awful position. You simply can't pay these bills or interact with the American banking system without a U.S. bank account.

Any advice on what to do now?

  • Are there ANY traditional banks that will still let me have a U.S. bank account while legally using my EU address?
  • Even if other banks currently allow it, will they also be forced to drop us in 2027?
  • Are there alternatives that aren't technically traditional banks (e.g., Neobanks, Fintechs like Wise/Revolut, Prepaid Debit Cards) that work for paying U.S. bills?

Is anyone else in this situation right now? What are you doing to prepare?

Chase Checking: You DON'T Need Direct Deposit to Waive the Monthly Fee

• Upvotes

I'm going to leave this here to clarify something for current and potential Chase customers, because I see this confusion way too often.

You DO NOT need a direct deposit from your employer, Social Security, or a pension to waive the $15 monthly maintenance fee on a Chase checking account.

An ACH deposit (ANY ACH deposit!) or RTP/FedNow deposit (the faster, modern substitutes of ACH) initiated from another bank or brokerage account also qualifies to waive the fee. A payroll or government direct deposit is NOT required. Please note: you MUST initiate the ACH/RTP/FedNow from the other institution.

One distinction is important: A qualifying direct deposit from payroll IS required for the account opening bonus, but NOT to waive the monthly maintenance fee.

I really wish Chase would explain this more clearly on its website. The wording is confusing, and it's easy to see why so many people misunderstand the requirements.

Chase app net worth feature deprecated?

Did Chase just deprecate the net worth feature overnight with no announcement?

I had been using it since moving off of Mint. It had its issues but it was functional enough...

Chase Pay as you go

Im pretty new to the credit world and have a low credit limit. Have a 200+ dollar charge but im in the 0% apr period. Is it worth experimenting with this pay as you go feature (breaks into 9 payments no fee since in the 0% intro period).

Again I emphasize i have low credit limit and this takes a large percentage of it.

Is it worth trying?

Any tips or warnings about this program for future reference?

Title: Chase Offer for Harris Teeter (online only) never credited, and Chase can't tell me why. Also, how do I get a CLI?

Hoping someone here has run into this, because I'm getting nowhere with Chase.

1) 2x Harris Teeter offer never credited

I had an online-only Chase Offer for Harris Teeter on my [chase flex]. I added it in June and another now in September, then placed orders through the Harris Teeter website/app on the months that I activated them, paying with that same card. The charges show on my statement as Harris teeter, but the statement credit never posted and it's been months, the last one, exactly a month.

I called Chase and also went into a branch. Nobody could explain why the purchases didn't count or do anything about it.

- Do Harris Teeter online orders get charged by the store at pickup/delivery, so they code as in-store and don't count for "online only" offers?

- Has anyone gotten Chase to manually credit an offer that didn't trigger? Is there a department or a secure message that works better than calling?

2) Best way to get a credit limit increase?

Separately, I'd like a CLI on this card. My limit is 3500 and I've had the card about 3 months. Is it better to call, send a secure message, or request it in the app? Is it a hard pull, and should I update my income first?

TL;DR: Online-only Chase Offer at Harris Teeter never credited, and neither phone support nor the branch could help. Also looking for tips on getting a CLI.

Thanks in advance!

How to escalate estate closing delays?

We’ve been fighting Chase’s local branch to finish closing our parents’ estate for a couple of months. It’s been a comedy of errors. What is the best way to shine sunlight on these fools?

Chase Amazon 5% card vs Langely FCU card - pros/cons?

A redditor told me that langely FCU's credit card you choose 5% among 10 categories and amazon is one of them. Looks better than chase's amazon card? Am I missing anything?

Does the 5% for langely FCU for amazon actually work?

Help, am I the only one?

I've been using Chase as my bank for a year by now, I've had no issues with it since then but on Sunday for some weird reason my app won't work on my Android device by telling me that do to Georgia'sstate law I need to verify my age and the app has to be updated, mind you, my app has the most recent update, my phone too, so I don't know what to do, is there a solution to this? I tried contacting them via email and nothing, I've been dealing with this since then

Likelihood of winning chargeback - rental scam

Ive never done a chargeback in my life. Lets just say I was offered a space that came with all sorts of hidden terms & conditions - even a side of harassment. Ive been here not even 2 weeks and ask for my money back as the space has been misrespesented.

I paid rent via my debit card- loaded money onto Venmo.

If I file a dispute/chargeback for this, whats the best way to go about it? The amount being disputed would be $1200. Is a provisional credit usually provided instantly? I need my money back to secure safe housing. Will the "merchant" /receiver be notified right away?

Pls help - this is a dangerous situation and I'm 1000s of miles from family
