Chase closing accounts for EEA addresses (Jan 2027) — What are my options?
TL;DR: Chase is closing my U.S. bank accounts due to new 2027 EU banking rules (CRD VI) because my primary address is in Germany. I still need a U.S. account to pay student loans and credit cards. Looking for alternative banks or fintech solutions that allow EEA addresses.
I'm an American and I've lived in Germany for 2 years and will continue to be here for about another 2 years. I've been so thankful for Chase because they gave me the option to have a foreign phone number and address while maintaining my U.S. account. I have several things I still absolutely need a U.S. bank account for: paying down U.S. credit card balances, filing U.S. tax returns, and making student loan payments.
Unfortunately, I just received an email today stating that starting January 2027, if my primary address is in the European Economic Area (EEA), they'll be unable to continue servicing my U.S. account(s) and will need to close them.
I understand that this is the result of the new EU banking rules (CRD VI) restricting non-EU banks, but it puts me in an awful position. You simply can't pay these bills or interact with the American banking system without a U.S. bank account.
Any advice on what to do now?
- Are there ANY traditional banks that will still let me have a U.S. bank account while legally using my EU address?
- Even if other banks currently allow it, will they also be forced to drop us in 2027?
- Are there alternatives that aren't technically traditional banks (e.g., Neobanks, Fintechs like Wise/Revolut, Prepaid Debit Cards) that work for paying U.S. bills?
Is anyone else in this situation right now? What are you doing to prepare?
