Discussion Gluten Nightmares

Does anyone else experience nightmares about being glutened? Most of mine involve me accidentally putting soy sauce on rice instead of tamari or being in a really fun situation with friends and forgetting to read a label and accidentally glutening myself. They often feel like those nightmares where you’re kind of awake or slightly conscious and it’s like anxiety poking through. Anyway about a year into my diagnosis and the fun doesn’t stop! 🥴😂

I was having pizza dreams and I’m not even a big pizza person. I kept eating full gluten pizza and then freaking out that I ate the full gluten pizza right after

Often happens when I've actually been glutened. It's sometimes one of the first signs.

That tracks. Your brain knows before you do sometimes.

The gut-brain axis is real.

Speaking of, I met with a GI Psychologist and their treatments sounded so awesome and then they told me it was $400 for the initial and then $300 for 45 min sessions after that. :(

That’s so interesting and makes a lot of sense. In my case I think most of them are a trauma response from the last time I got so sick— it was so bas— but I last night I do wonder about the chickpeas my husband used in the salad.

YES. I had a dream a couple months ago where I was both watching myself eating the most decadent pizza and eating the decadent pizza. So I was having an out of body experience, yelling at myself to "for God's sake stop eating the pizza! It has GLUTEN!" while also absolutely indulging. I woke up panicking that I actually ate the pizza.

I had a nightmare that I was poisoned and I went to the ER, and the doctors solemly told me it was too late to pump my stomach because it had already reached my intestines. I told the doctor that I could clear my intestines quick. (I'm sure this has no real medical basis, but it was sleep logic). Checked myself out, and went to my favorite grocery store which also happens to have a Del Taco and a Jack in the Box in the parking lot. I ordered my old favorite breakfast sandwhich at Jack in the Box (the one on the croissant bun) and then grabbed a chicken soft taco from Del Taco (I used to love those so much) and for dessert I went into the grocery store and bought glazed Entemans donuts. I woke up before I got to actually eat any of it, so that was a bummer.

Haha this is an epic night. My favorite were Burger King’s breakfast sandwiches on the croissant before baseball. 😍

I'm in recovery from drugs and alcohol. For years after quitting, I would have frequent relapse dreams, where I used in the dream, and woke up mildly freaked out that I relapsed. The dreams are less frequent now, but more often I'll get dreams where I ate a piece of bread, or a burrito. And I still have the same feeling when I wake of, "what did I do?!" Not sure if there's a connection there, in the sense that quitting drugs was a shock to my system, and the stress may have triggered my development of celiac. Though, it was only a matter of time, since everyone in my family has it. The mind is a strange thing.

No actually, the opposite! 🤣 Almost every dream I remember features an incident that goes somewhat like this:

Me: *eating* “Wow this is so yummy!”

Someone else: “Nooo! That has gluten!”

Me: *looks at food, shrugs, keeps eating* “Too late now.” (but I also know I’m dreaming because I’m so careful I leave no room for accidents)

The only time I get to revisit gluteny goodness is in my dreams. 🤤

Yes I'm newly diagnosed and had a few gluten nightmares already.

In one, I was eating Naan at my old favorite Indian restaurant and then realized what I was doing after already eating a lot and then started panicking. And then a similar one last week where I ate a small bag of potato chips a friend had given me and finished it before I realized I didn't check the ingredients and they had gluten in them. And then I freaked out in my dream.

Stress dreams are common for me though so it's just a new flavor for them to take on lol.

100% and I'm 6 years post diagnosis 😔 I recently had a dream where I was eating a croissant sandwich and realized halfway through that it was definitely not a gluten free croissant and that I hadn't even checked. Woke in a bit of a cold sweat 🙄 I've had multiple dreams like that but still not one with a cell phone 🤔 The brain be crazy 🤷‍♀️
