NOTICE: “Can they build this settle between these roads”?

We all know the question. We’ve voted how to handle it in the past. People still use this sub like Google. Long time contributors are getting more frustrated. We’re trying something new.

This is your official notice that if you ask the sub regarding building a settlement that breaks the longest road - you show that you have ignored the sticky posts on this subreddit, the submission guidelines regarding checking the FAQ first, THE RULE BOOK, as well as the side bar.

This will result in a 30 day ban.

This will result in a 14 day ban.

This will result in a 3 day ban. (Final)

*settlement

Edit 3/28/25: A new automod rule has been deployed to help reduce the number of these posts.

I made a Reddit account just to post this. My wife handmade Catan from Clay… the sheep have FACES. The trees are GORGEOUS. The wheat is LUCIOUS. She thought I would want to play a game on it. This will never be touched by any other soul.

Cities & Knights - 1st try!

Well this was interesting! Took a few rounds to get a grasp of (most) of the new rules, but we still found out halfway that we were playing the barbarians wrong (whoops!). Also noticed a few rounds after that blue mistakenly placed two settlements right next to one another, but we let it slide because we didn't notice right away.

All in all, this was a long game - took nearly 3 hours! There are some nice mechanics, like the city walls, that are fun, and the city developments really sped things up towards the end. Everyone enjoyed it, though, so that's what matters, and I think well be able to play through a little quicker next time.

I made it myself, just used a tiny little bit of AI (basically built the whole thing with AI). Now I'm just going to spam the subreddit daily because my idea is so original and nobody has done it before.

Oh, and if you could test it and give me free feedback, that would be awesome!

(sarcasm)

No more promotional content, Ai, and non Catan related posts

Thank you for continuing to bring attention to this issue, I went by and removed dozens of posts and banned a couple users who repeatedly posted unwanted slop here after being shown complete disinterest. You are heard and we are doing our best to help solve and rectify the growing number of these posts

Going forward it is a mutable then bannable offense from the sub to post your own promotions website or non Catan related game/website. Until we get the automod sorted to try and help filter these posts please continue to be report them and keep an eye out for breaking sub etiquette

As always please be civil, thank you for looking out for the Catan sub community

It took me 30 seconds and signifies the level of effort someone needs to completely rip off an established IP and infect an internet community in pursuit of a quick dollar.

this subreddit doesnt allow video uploads so you can see it in action here: https://vimeo.com/1235973639?share=copy&fl=sv&fe=ci

I'm gonna delete this in a bit but I'm frustrated that nothings being done about that guy spamming this forum

Been working on this for a while and finally got to put everything together!

3D printed and hand-painted the whole board, including custom cities and settlements for each player inspired by different civilizations.

Pretty happy with how it turned out! Just wanted to share it with you guys. Let me know what you think!

Which win condition would you find the most satisfying?

These are just off the top of my head, I'm sure others can think of something better in the comments!

(I made this post after winning a game on colonist where I used a monopoly to build a settlement on a wheat port and then taking road, ending the game with zero cards. Very satisfying)

Winning a game by blindly pulling a VP point
Winning with 11 points
Winning by using a monopoly and ending the game with zero cards (the perfect monopoly play)
Winning by not building a city
Winning by trading with an opponent
Winning by not building a single road

Custom scenario update

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hi, sharing a custom scenario I'm working on for this weekend to test out some new modules I got, which include:

  • Volcano tiles: in the middle island, with 4, 5 and 9 pipes that produce gold.
  • Shipwreck tiles: on a 2/12 allows a player to pick up a treasure token (from dragons, treasures & adventurers).
  • Oil springs: just for oil production (for trade and metropolis), there's no environmental tracker.
  • Pirate lairs: function similar to pirates & explorers, the main difference is using the knights from C&K to clean them.
  • Gold: I'm using the one that comes in T&B, but it works just like in pirate & explorers: 2 at the start, 1 when you don't produce (save from being blocked by a robber), 2 on a Gold field or volcano.
  • Fish from T&B.
  • Extra victory cards, each worth 1VP, save for plague which is -3VP.
  • Strongest Harbors victory card.
  • Trade companies, funny concept from Pincer, want to see how it plays out.
  • Custom civs.

Overall, there's lot going on, but many of the things are just either extra resources to play or extra options to get more VPs. Now I'm just trying to guess how many VPs should be required to win, since this seems like a 20 or so scenario based solely on the options available.

And, yes, blue ended up winning because of all of the 11s.

Only 4 of 8 skins shown here! If the pieces are too unrecognizable, there is an option for simpler remodels! DM me or comment down below if you'd like the google extension to use these skins yourself!

I'm also more than happy to take ideas! LMK what would look insanely cool!

Tax Fraud in Catan

I just watched my parents commit tax fraud in real time while playing Catan. They were both trading several cards, I think a 3:4 trade. However, my mom was scared that a 7 would be rolled next and she would lose half her cards. After some negotiation, my parents did the trade, and my mom gave all her extra cards to my dad. On her next turn, my dad gave back all her cards she gifted to him, all to avoid a potential 7.

In case you can't see the analogy here, my mom gave all her money to someone else for free. If the tax collector would come along, he would take the fall instead of her. If the tax collector didn't, he would give it back to her completely for free.

While all of this was going on, I was laughing my head off; I've never seen anyone commit Catan tax fraud.

Anyways, a 7 was actually rolled, and she successfully avoided paying taxes because my dad took the fall for her.

How to combine SF scenarios 5-8 with C&K (discussion)

While SF + C&K is the simplest expansion combo, the rules mentioned in the C&K rulebook and online, aren't complete enough, as the available combo rules don't take into account the special rules the latter half of C&K have. To quote the website: "exploratory scenarios and all other scenarios featuring many smaller islands are unsuitable." The C&K rulebook even calls out Four Islands and Fog Islands as ones you should not pick.

This explanation is very unsatisfactory, for 2 reasons. A) It doesn't even address the latter scenarios with special rules. No explanation as to whether scenarios 5-8 are playable or not. And B) This quoted portion just plain isn't true. Four Islands and Fog Islands work fine with C&K. The combo is even officially supported in Catan Universe. To go even further, the first 2 scenarios within TD&A give the option to play with C&K, and both of those have plenty of Fog and small/skinny islands!

So, nuts to the official explanation! Let's try to figure out how to efficiently add C&K to the following scenarios:

The Forgotten Tribe

One large landmass in the middle, and the remaining islands don't produce and can't even be settled on. Perfect. The only issue is what to do with the Development cards placed on the map? I discuss 3 possible solutions in this post: Forgotten Tribe + C&K. Answer from Germany: You shouldn't. : r/Catan. Of those, I think my 2nd one is the most "elegant" option.

Cloth for Catan

This one, I will admit, probably not a good idea for C&K. Since the only producing regions are 2 long skinny islands. It'll be tough getting resources/commodities to do your C&K things. Strictly speaking, there aren't any rule conflicts or gaps in the rules that need to be figured out. However, the main source of VP in this scenario was the Cloth Tokens from the Villages in the middle. It's possible for the scenario to end early if 5+ villages run out. So there is that factor to consider. It might make adding C&K not worth it, perhaps.

However, one thing to consider, is that C&K already has the Cloth Commodity card. And the focus of this scenario was getting Cloth Tokens. 6e even uses the same icon (if only recolored). What if, we get rid of the Cloth Tokens, and let everyone collect infinite Cloth Commodities cards from those Villages? Scenario no longer ends early, and everybody will be getting the Trade Bonus for Commodities really easy. Something worth playtesting, could be interesting.

The Pirate Islands

Yeah, I don't think a C&K combo will be possible here. Original scenario has you converting Ships into Warships using Knight (and sometimes VP) dev cards. I don't see how to convert this aspect smoothly into C&K's ruleset. Maybe the goal changes to sending your Knight to the Pirate Liar (like in TD&A's Enchanted Land scenario against the Dragons), but I think we are approaching major houserule territory where major game mechanics are going to have to be invented to accommodate. I think it's best to leave this to a professional game designer.

Wonders of Catan

One large landmass, check! And only 2 tiny islands worth 1 VP each. Yup, I don't see any issues here. And the Wonders themselves don't offer an rule conflicts or gaps with C&K. Well alright then, no issues!

...well, except for the Goal of this scenario, actually building your Wonder. If you manage to do this, you win the game immediately, no matter what your VP score is. So what is to stop you from ignoring all the C&K stuff and going after the Wonders? Well, some Wonders care about having a City, so there is that. But only some Wonders, others don't (Great Wall, Great Bridge, Lighthouse). So that risks unbalancing that aspect of the game. Hmm. Needs playtesting, but it could work.

Anyone else have thoughts or experiences on the C&K combos for the above scenarios?

Forgotten Tribe + C&K. Answer from Germany: You shouldn't.

Post image

In an attempt to help u/Yo026 answer the question in this post Question for Seafarers Scenario 5: The Forgotten Tribe : r/Catan, I decided to email Catan GmbH directly, and this is their response. Well, guys and gals, it looks like we are on our own for this one! u/nickratliff37, you also asked a similar question a year ago. Finally got you an "answer".

Yeah, not exactly satisfying. This answer I have seen used written elsewhere, so they just copy pasted into their email. I hope in the future, they provide more instructions for combining the latter half of the SF scenarios with C&K. They went deep into all the possible T&B combinations, I hope they do the same for scenarios 5-8 (well, scenario 7 might be impossible, but oh well).

So, in light of no "official" answer, I have 3 suggestions on how to handle this combo:

  1. Randomly distribute Progress Cards. You could try to make things as even as possible per deck, or go pure random and not care if it is uneven.
  2. Place regular Development cards. When you reach that spot, you get to pick a Progress Card of your choice
  3. Place regular Development cards... and then actually draw them into your hand ;). Maybe you can get a hidden VP this way! Or a better Monopoly! Knight card should simply move the Robber/Pirate, no free Knight piece.

I think suggestion 2 is the most elegant answer. Suggestion 3 is the more chaotic answer, though >:)
