Interacting with People Online and IRL.

Hello All,

Most people coming to this subreddit are looking to make some new friends and join a community, I've met nearly all of my adult friends in this subreddit and I hope everyone can find friends as well.

With that said, I do want to warn everyone to take caution in meeting strangers from the internet alone. We've had reports of an abusive and dangerous user and just want to warn everyone here about that. We are still on the internet and anyone could be at the other end.

Here are some tips to help keep people safe.

  1. The Buddy System: Don't meet anyone from the internet alone. We recommend to bring a friend or create an event that is out in public with many people.
  2. This isn't Tinder: Please don't attempt to find a romantic partner or casual hookup here.
  3. Beware of Pressure: If someone is pressuring you to meet alone, do NOT meet them, they are most likely not looking to have a safe and friendly time.

If anyone has any more tips to stay safe while meeting new people IRL, please share them. I'll add any good tips to this post.

My intention isn't to scare people or discourage them from trying to post or make friends, I know it can be tough. All of us working together can create a safer space for everyone. This helped me at a very important time in my life and I really hope it can do the same for everyone here.

French Practise Group in Calgary? ✨

Hi friends! I (27F) started seriously learning French last month. Despite taking it in school growing up, like most people, I didn’t actually learn much haha. 😅I’m very much a beginner, A1 currently.

I’m thinking of starting a French-speaking and study group in Calgary where people of all levels can get together to chat (en français, of course), exchange notes and resources, do our assignments if we have them, and maybe watch French films, explore French media, or listen to music together.

It would be a fun way to practise our skills, make friends, and connect with others in a low-stakes, low-cost setting outside of formal lessons!

We could meet at libraries or cafés, or even book a room at a board game café if enough people are interested.

We could meet weekly or biweekly, depending on everyone’s availability.

One rule: please, no snobbery! We’re all here to learn, improve, and have fun, regardless of our level. 😊

If you’re interested, comment below or send me a DM! Let’s see if we can get a little French-speaking community going in Calgary. 🇫🇷✨

Looking to make some like-minded friends

Hey guys, I am a 33 Male, and grew up in Calgary. I had a good group of friends, not big, but overtime, it became smaller and smaller. People moved away for jobs, found significant others, got busy with families & kids, and connections faded.

I went to Sir Winston Churchill High School, did Engineering at UofC and working as an Engineer downtown in oil & gas. I am a simple person, I value quiet, chill, relaxing things over high energy activities. I love animals, especially cats, I like motorcycles, cars, thriller or horror movies, cooking and working on DIY projects. I like a bit of hiking, used to snowboard, I don't partake in competitive sports, but I do love to go to random cafes or long drives in the mountains.

Of course, its that age where I should be settled down with someone, so if something evolves into more than a friendship, that would be a great bonus as well. P.S. I dont drink, or smoke or vape

Looking to meet like-minded people in Calgary

Hi Calgary,
My wife and I recently moved here from Scotland and are looking to build a social circle. We also have a dog. Thought I’d post about both of us.
Me
27, work in sales, and have a car so I’m happy to travel around the city or further afield. Big into the outdoors — hiking, fishing, camping. Also love watching and going to sports, a good pub, and playing pool. Looking to meet some like-minded people to hang out with.
My wife Jamielee
29, a bit quieter and more chilled than me. She’s into reading, Pilates, and dog walks. Looking to meet people and build a relaxed social circle.
If any of that sounds like your vibe, drop a comment or message. Would be great to connect!

To add I enjoy going out for drinks and raves, not sure what the scenes like here

Happy for meet couples but also friends for her and I separate

I enjoy going to the gym, snowboarding, watching sports, going for a drink, golfing, hiking

Send me a dm!

Looking for new girlfriends in Calgary! ✨

Hi everyone! 💗

I'm a 27F, born and raised in Calgary, and a TOTAL girls' girl looking to expand my social circle and meet more like-minded women!

Since graduating uni a couple of years ago, I've noticed that a lot of my friendships have naturally drifted, and I'd love to meet some new gal pals to make memories with!
I love music, going out dancing, crafting, trying new restaurants, grabbing drinks, and yapping about absolutely anything.

I'm genuinely down for anything, whether that's a cozy movie night, a cute café date, a night out dancing, or hitting the bars.
My favourite areas to hang out in Calgary are Kensington and Bridgeland.

I'm especially looking for friends who value female friendships, love making plans, and are excited to build genuine, supportive friendships! 💕

I tend to get along best with women and gay men, and I'm looking for genuine, platonic friendships! 🥰
If this sounds like your vibe, please feel free to message me!

29M Looking for chill friends and new experiences

M29 here putting myself out there for anyone interested in making new (and hopefully long-term) friends and memories.

A little about me. Since I was young, I love art and my interests has pushed me into the realm of 3D modelling. I’m lucky to be in a job that let me do what I love. Because of this, my work days can be busy for me and my availability can be limited on weekdays. That said, I’ll never say no to going out for food and drinks (or video games if you’re a homebody)

I’m mainly looking for friends who can put me out of my comfort zone. I’ve never really had any other gay friends. I’ve never went to Twisted Element, watched drag shows, etc. but I’m open to someone showing me the ropes. Apparently, my older gay brother doesn’t think it’s cool for his younger gay brother to tag along lol (fellas, he’s single)

On the opposite end of the spectrum, I am also interested in folks who are active and into sports. I occasionally get free tickets for games from work( typically hockey, sometimes football). That said, I am not at all into sports, so if you’re someone who can help me understand the appeal of it, feel free to DM me.

People were tired of me being skinny, so I made going to the gym my New Year’s Resolution. It’s not going so well. If you can help me feel better about myself - again, doors are wide open.

Sorry if that was too long. I know the newer generations don’t read (I kid, I kid lol). If you’re interested, feel free to introduce yourself. I love hearing people talk about themselves (or talk in general). Looking forward to meeting new friends :)

27M Looking for more friends

Hey, I'm pretty terrible at writing these kinds of things, but here goes. I'm looking to expand my social group and just generally get out there more. I generally like all the hobbies that I have, but I recognize that they all don't exactly involve getting out there and talking to people haha. I starting listing everything I want to do and what I already do, but it got way to long. My major interests are Anime and gaming, but I'm definitely trying to push myself to get out there more and meet people and make friends

33m Looking for artist group

Hello guys, I moved to Calgary 2 years ago and been looking for friends (it’s been kind of hard lol). I’m an illustrator, children book illustrator if you want to put a label on it, also do 3D and pixel art on a professional level as well, oh and make games as well (Game dev). I take pictures as hobby as well. I’m not exactly a SUPER adventure guy, don’t get me wrong, I’m always open for a hike or adventure, but my niche is within the city.

I don’t own a vehicle, so you’ll have to provide the vehicle HA! But I’m no freeloader, I always try to help with gas or snacks or both.

As for games, I do enjoy the occasional OVERWATCH, but my strength is single player games, that’s why I don’t make mention of games, but, if squading up is your thing on OVERWATCH, then by all means…

38M Looking for new friendships / community and more

Heya all!

I moved back to Calgary just over 2 years ago and my social circle has been quite small since moving back.

I’m open to more friendships and am genuinely looking to meet people. I am also open to dating (straight) if that were to become an option .

Some interests I have are

• Bartending / mixology
• Arts
• Gaming (Pokemon, lord of the rings, league of legends)
• Hiking
• General activities I love learning more about what’s going on in our city
• I also just got a betta fish tank and excited to setup a new aquarium!

I have an open mind when it comes to history and origin and that’s what makes Calgary so great again but I’ve found it challenging with my current job to get to meet people and form meaningful relationships.

I live in the down town area but open to small traveling adventures or meeting anywhere around town really.

If you’re open to getting to meet more people then shoot me a DM and we can chat.

Looking forward to meeting more people :)

24M wanting friends and more cool people in my life!

Hey ya'll, I hope everyone is having a fantastic day! I am writing this post because I do not have a whole lot of friends in my life right now. The loneliness sucks but I'm wanting to put myself out there and not feel the need to isolate myself. Enough yapping and a little bit about myself lol

I'm 24, currently working fulltime, but when I do have some time to myself I love to listen to music (I love my older rock, blues, new wave and alt!). I would also like to be able to go out more and find a reason to do so, so I'm not cooped up inside all day. If any of that speaks to you, please feel free to reach out :)

27m Korean Calgarian - Wanting to try Filipino food + new friends

Hey all,

I grew up in Calgary in the NW and never really had the opportunity to make any Filipino friends or try Filipino cuisine. I'm also mostly cooking at home, so it would be nice to go out more and try different cuisines.

A bit about me - I've been working as a social worker for a few years after graduating from U of C. I'm open to networking and making new friends within the field since it was difficult making connections through virtual learning.

I'm mostly playing tennis 3-4 times per week during the summer (3.0-3.5 rating), but would like to get back into squash or pickleball during the winter. 🎾 I just know nothing about booking indoor courts lol. I'm also into road biking/cycling, so I'd love to find a riding partner. I currently have a single speed, so I'm not doing any long rides, mostly just along the Bow River. 🚴

I only have a PC right now, so I'm into FPS, open-world and racing games. Sometimes I'll play on the PS2 emulator too. I also like watercolor painting - mostly botanicals and cards.

Some of my fav films: The Whale, The Florida Project, Past Lives. The Odyssey is the most overrated film of the year lol. Also big into fragrances, so I write reviews and sometimes host a perfume/fragrance club.

Politically and socially progressive, agnostic, and went through religious deconstruction a few years ago, so happy to rant about that topic.

In terms of music, I mostly listen to French rap, indie, pop (Damso, PLK, Angele, etc) so it would be nice to meet some francophones. Unfortunately, don't speak it but would like to learn some phrases. 🇫🇷

I'm in the Bridgeland/central area. Open to any age and gender, and neurodivergent folks are welcome as well. I also don't really have Korean friends, so it might be nice to make some new ones! I'm pretty introverted so trying to put myself out there.

Edit: added some emojis and my music taste

35F | Calgary 🇨🇦 Just moved here and looking to meet new people!

So, I recently moved to Calgary, and I'm starting pretty much from scratch socially. 😅 I don't really know anyone here yet, so I figured I'd put myself out there and see who I might cross paths with!

A little about me: I'm 35, creative, curious about human behaviour, and the kind of person who enjoys both random, ridiculous conversations and deep talks about life, psychology, and what makes people tick.

I'm in a new chapter of my life, exploring new interests, learning more about myself, and figuring out what I want life to look like moving forward. I'm always interested in learning something new, hearing different perspectives, and meeting people who see the world a little differently.

I'd love to find some genuine friends to hang out with, whether that's grabbing coffee, exploring Calgary, going for walks, checking out random places, or just sitting around talking about absolutely everything and nothing. 😂

I'm pretty open-minded and appreciate people who are genuine, have a good sense of humour, and don't feel the need to pretend to be someone they're not.

I'm not expecting to find my entire friend group overnight, but it'd be nice to meet some people and see what connections develop naturally.

If you're in Calgary and also looking to make new friends, feel free to message me! Tell me something about yourself. Who knows, we might just get along. 👀✨

Starting Over Socially

Late 30s guy, living downtown and trying to rebuild a social circle after a breakup.

I moved to Calgary, met someone, and over time her social circle naturally became mine as well. We’ve since broken up, and I’ve realized I’m in the slightly uncomfortable position of not really having my own network here. I don’t have family in Calgary, and without someone to help break the ice into an existing group, I’m finding myself a bit lost.

Just to get this out of the way up front, I’m already in therapy and dealing with the breakup there, so I’m not looking for new friends to become my therapists or spend our time listening to me process it. I’m looking to move forward and build a life and social circle of my own.

With the next few months coming up, I’m also conscious that spending too much time alone can get pretty daunting, so I figured I should actually put myself out there instead of hoping friendships somehow materialize.

I’m not looking to date. I’m genuinely looking for platonic friendships and people to do things with.

A bit about me:
I’m not especially stereotypically “guy-ish.” Sports and cars do very little for me. I tend to get along particularly well with women and queer people, although I’m open to friendships with anyone I click with.

I’m much more into art, design, museums and galleries, wandering around downtown and Inglewood, good food, cocktails, wine, coffee, and generally having reasons to get out of the apartment and enjoy the city.

In classic post breakup fashion, I’m also getting back into fitness. I’m slowly training toward a half marathon in the spring, with the vague ambition of doing a full marathon in the fall if training goes well. Emphasis on slowly I am very much not a natural runner. I’ve also started weightlifting, although I’m currently at the “quietly figure out what I’m doing without witnesses” stage rather than looking for a gym buddy.

I’d also really like to get out hiking more. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, but I’ve always been a little intimidated by the idea of joining an established hiking group and being the slowest person in the pack. I’d just really like to meet people who are around a similar ability level and are happy with a more relaxed pace, breaks when needed, and actually enjoying being out there rather than treating every hike like a race.

I’m also interested in trying some nerdier hobbies that I never really had an entry point into before. I’ve been looking into D&D and Magic The Gathering, but I’m a complete beginner at both. If you’re the kind of person who enjoys introducing a newcomer to either without expecting them to know what they’re doing, that would be very welcome.

Politically, I’m quite far on the liberal/progressive end of the spectrum, and compatibility there probably matters to me more than pretending it doesn’t.
I’m also firmly childfree and would ideally like to meet other childfree people, or at least people whose social lives aren’t primarily centred around parenting. It’s less about being anti-kid and more about wanting friendships with people who have a similar amount of flexibility for dinners, drinks, events, weekends away, spontaneous plans, and generally doing things around the city.

Location wise, downtown/inner city would be ideal. I don’t have a car, and I’m hoping to build a social life that actually exists around where I live rather than something that requires a 45-minute commute every time.

I suppose what I’m looking for is a few people in roughly the same stage of life who want to actually do things drinks after work, dinner, exhibitions, museums, markets, walks, trying new restaurants, maybe games, occasional events, and eventually the kind of friendship where you can text someone on a random Thursday and see what they’re doing.
If any of this sounds familiar or you think we might get along, feel free to send me a message.

Edit: This got a lot more responses than I expected. I’m a bit out of my element here since I don’t normally put myself out there like this, so I’m being a little cautious and taking my time going through DMs.

I’ll reply as I work through them. And if this post struck a chord with you too, please feel free to use it as a jumping-off point to connect with others and build some community here.

29M looking for friends for a drink, a mountain trip, or a questionable last-minute plan

Hey! Been in Calgary about five years, and between a breakup, friends moving away and working too much, my circle’s gotten pretty small. Hoping to meet some people and ideally make a couple of close friends.

I’m in McKenzie in the SE. Pretty chatty, sarcastic, and enjoy some friendly back-and-forth. I tend to click with people who can joke around and disagree without making it personal.

Always up for movies, good food or drinks somewhere we can actually hear each other—clubs aren’t really my thing. Love a Banff/Canmore trip for wandering around, food and scenery. Trying to get more active too. Also enjoy a good conversation about history, geopolitics or business.

I’m pretty spontaneous—once went out for drinks and ended up on a flight to Vancouver the next morning 😂 Equally happy with a movie night, but would love friends who occasionally say “fuck it, let’s go.”

I’m gay, just looking for friends, and open to guys and girls roughly 23–35. I travel for work, so my availability varies, but I’m making time for this.

Anyone up for grabbing food or a drink? Send me a bit about yourself and let’s pick a place.

28M Looking for new friends

I am 28M looking to make new and build some form of social life. I spent a lot of my 20s just studying and trying to figure things out. I was thinking about life recently and it hit me that I do not have a circle of friends to kick it with or just go through life with aside from my family. I stay home a lot of the times that I have become used to living a quiet and peaceful life so I feel a little lost with trying to grow my social life.

About me: I was born in the Philippines and moved to Calgary at a very young age. I don't know much Tagalog but would love to pick it up again. I am an introvert and have a chill personality. I enjoy playing video games on PC like League of Legends, Forza, Assetto Corsa, and recently Aion 2. I also enjoy watching anime and kdramas. I used to play sports like badminton and basketball, and I am thinking of playing again. I like cars but more in a sense of observing cars at meets/shows and watching content that involves cars on YouTube and social media. I enjoy eating a lot of Asian cuisines like noodle soups, sushi, Korean food, and trying out new restaurants. I also love coffee, tea, and bubble tea.

I'd be happy to talk to anyone who may be in the similar situations or anyone who shares an interest and would like to make new friends.

29m, looking for friends to make art with

I moved a few months ago and am struggling to find a social circle. I love painting, working with clay, sewing, collaging, etc. I miss having a group of friends to craft with, and am desperately lacking it here!

I do better with introductions in small group settings as opposed to meeting one on one, but then have an easier time hanging out individually once we’ve met! I may be able to work through the anxiety if we chat a bit before meeting up.

I also have a shiba inu mix who is super goofy and loves other dogs, if anyone’s dog needs a friend.

To put this out there ahead of time, I am queer. I don’t consider it a huge part of who I am, but I don’t hide it and I only want to be around people who are accepting!

Feel free to send a message or comment if you are looking for something similar :)
