I have a friend who recently came to me asking for advice about her cat, and honestly, I’m not sure what to tell her. I figured I’d ask here to get some different perspectives, especially from other cat owners who may have experienced something similar.
She has a gray cat that she’s had for about five years. When she first got her, everything seemed perfectly fine, but over time, the cat started developing recurring ear problems. From what she’s explained, it seems to be some type of yeast infection or excessive wax buildup that just never fully goes away.
She’s taken the cat to the vet and tried treatments, but the issue keeps coming back. The biggest problem is that whenever the cat shakes her head, dark wax and discharge fly everywhere, getting on the furniture, floors, and even staining the walls.
Because of this, she’s had to keep the cat primarily in a separate room. The cat has food, water, toys, and everything she needs, and my friend still spends time with her and lets her out periodically. However, she feels terrible that the cat can’t freely roam around the apartment like she used to.
On top of the ear issues, the cat also has a strong odor that requires frequent grooming and baths. My friend has even hired mobile groomers to help maintain her hygiene. She’s starting to wonder whether food allergies, diet, or some other underlying health issue could be contributing to the problem.
Here’s where things get a little more complicated.
My friend is currently pregnant and expecting her first baby with her husband very soon. They live in a two-bedroom apartment, and the room the cat currently occupies is space they could otherwise use for their baby.
She’s now struggling with whether she should continue trying to manage the situation or consider rehoming the cat to someone who may have more space, resources, or experience handling chronic health conditions.
She’s had this cat for five years, so it’s not a decision she’s taking lightly. She genuinely cares about her, but she’s also thinking about the baby’s arrival, the hygiene concerns, and whether keeping the cat confined to one room is really fair to the animal.
**I guess my questions are:**
Has anyone experienced recurring yeast infections or excessive dark ear discharge in their cat that wouldn’t go away?
Could this be related to food allergies or something else that might have been overlooked?
Is it fair to keep a cat primarily in one room long-term, even if she has everything she needs?
Has anyone had to make the difficult decision to rehome a pet because of ongoing medical issues or major life changes?
If rehoming is the best option, how can she find someone trustworthy who understands the cat’s medical needs?
I’m not looking for anyone to judge her situation. I’m genuinely trying to gather helpful advice that I can pass along so she can make the best decision for both her family and her cat.
Any advice or personal experiences would be appreciated!
