What's your go-to for news about the broadcast industry?

I used to read FTV Live but Scott Jones has gotten pretty obnoxious over the past few years. Lately, it's pretty clear he's been using ChatGPT to write stories (just run any of his well-written posts through an AI checker and you'll see what I mean), and I just find that hypocritical given his very strong convictions about what he thinks the TV journalism industry should be (how are you going to criticize people for what you think is poor journalism when you're over there re-writing New York Post stories using AI?!)

So my bookmarks need updating. What sources do you regularly check for news about the industry? Looking for free, non-paywalled outlets.

How much do executive producers make

I am a producer in a top 65 market making around 41K. My shift has seen a lot of change with us losing our EP and another Producer. With the gaps I decided to apply for the EP slot and got an interview. I want to know what I could be looking at in terms of pay. Also for reference I work for Sinclair if that helps.

Field sports graphics workflow: How are you handling overlays locally without cloud platforms or breaking OBS plugins?

Hey everyone,

Putting together a portable field production rig for local weekend sports (community soccer, cricket, and youth baseball).

We need clean dynamic scorebugs, lower thirds, and rotating sponsor bugs. However, high-tier cloud graphics engines (Singular.live, etc.) are outside the budget for a grassroots community league, and more importantly, our outdoor 4G/5G connections on local grounds make relying on external web sources a huge liability mid-broadcast.

On the flip side, stacking heavy internal OBS plugins has burned us in the past with mid-season software updates.

For those operating remote field productions on a budget:

  1. Are you mostly relying on standalone local web servers pushed into OBS/vMix browser inputs?
  2. How do you handle live scorekeeping without tying up the switcher operator (e.g., local Wi-Fi tablet remotes vs hardware macro decks)?

Would love to hear how your field setups look for keeping graphics stable and 100% offline.

Leaning on content creators for stories

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Fascinating that this promo has zero local video content relevant to this market (KXAN). This is an interesting idea - and probably where the industry will be fully headed if I had to make a bet.

The whole reason the big groups are lobbying for removal of the ownership cap is so they can compete with the likes of Google, Meta, etc.

So I'd bet its safe to say that future broadcast news will probably just be essentially stringers and contractors, no more employees. Nexstar/Gray/whoever is the uber app, content creators are the drivers. Which is what I've been saying for years. Traditionally it seemed like any market smaller than like Houston was never interested in buying video from stringers, even if it meant they'd have an exclusive which I always thought was so strange. But now, they're literally asking you to apply to do it. Here we have market 30ish (whatever Austin is) asking people for it.

Early 4:3 Friendly HD Sports Broadcasts Look Better Than Current Ones IMO

They‘re more aesthetically pleasing in my opinion, I understand why the current trends are what they are, but I really enjoy the less…cinematic and more atmospheric live feel for sports you get on those mid-late 2000’s and early 2010’s HD broadcasts when 16:9 wasn’t fully the standard yet.

Am I fired? Gray Media

I work at a gray media station. My contract is up next week, they told me today they're not going to renew me, but they're willing to offer me month-to-month for six months, with no plan following six months.

Tonight, I've been logged out of every account, and when I try to log back in it says I'm restricted or forbidden. I'm not even allowed to reset my password. Have I been fired and nobody told me? Has anyone ever experienced this?

The AI in broadcast and post: Are you actually using it, or sticking strictly to the old ways? And what tools are actually worth it?))

Hey everyone,

After reading through everything you guys have been sharing lately, from the old-timers who’ve been in the trenches for decades to the newer peeps joining the field…
I noticed a massive chasm opening up in almost every control room and editing bay:

AI and automation.

Everyone’s talking about how tools are evolving, but honestly, where do you personally stand?

Are you actively trying to force AI, scripts, or automation into your daily workflow just to escape the tedious work?

Or are you stubbornly sticking to the traditional, manual way of doing things because you only trust your own hands and eyes, not some algorithm?

For the veterans: Do you look at AI as a threat to the craft, or finally some relief from the mind-numbing tasks? And for the newer crowd: Are you leaning heavily on these tools right from day one, or finding that old-school methods still rule?

Lets share notes: If you are using AI or automation tools that actually save your sanity without messing up the quality, what are they? Let’s help each other!!
Drop your best recommendations in the comments.
Are you rolling with the changes, or holding the line with the old ways?

Rules regarding smoking on personal time

I’m curious about the rules that others of you have at local TV stations regarding smoking when off the clock. I work as a local reporter and got this job about 10 years ago after spending a few years in a smaller market after getting out of college. When I was hired, it was made clear to me that smoking was not allowed while at work or while out on assignment. No big deal- I’m a light smoker and never smoke more than about six to seven cigarettes per day at most and can certainly get through my shift with no problem. A few years ago, they came out with a much stricter rule that on air personalities were no longer allowed to smoke anywhere in public- even on our personal time. This even included smoking in our cars. I didn’t like this rule but I’m not a complainer and can live with it. Recently one of our younger female reporters was reprimanded and given a warning because a viewer saw her smoking while driving in her own car on her day off. Now I’m paranoid about smoking anywhere but on my own patio at home. Just curious how other stations handle this issue and how any of you who are smokers deal with these rules. It honestly seems pretty invasive to me.

Skydance already cross-promoting Paramount & Warner Bros. properties

On The NFL Today, James Brown was promoting the ALCS airing on TBS & HBO Max. Normally, when a network promotes programming on another channel its either A. same-league programming that airs on competing networks or B. airing a program on a sister network.

So...five days in and Skydance is already cross-promoting between the legacy Viacom and Turner networks.
