I am Sam Webb. I played Drew Sharp in Breaking Bad. AMA!

I know this is long overdue, but better late than never, right?

To kick things off, here are a few tidbits about my connection to the show:

-My family and I were fans since the pilot, so I was well aware of the significance of it all.

-I grew up minutes from the high school used for J. P. Wynne.

-My dad was an extra in episode 2.02. (my episode was 5.05)

-The first time I ever handled a tarantula was the day we shot the intro scene.

In the years since Breaking Bad, I’ve graduated from UNM with a political science degree and spend most of my free time mountain biking, tinkering with sports cars, and raising my two Dobermans.

Feel free to connect with me on social media!

Ask away! I’ll do my best to get to everyone.

Identity has been verified with mods.

Edit:

Alright guys, as the night winds down I just want to thank everyone for participating and for all the kind words! The Breaking Bad community means the world to me and I’ll be connected to you all for life.

The most surreal part of all of this is the insane butterfly effect and overlaps.

My favorite example of this was seeing Drake perform for the first time in Phoenix a couple years ago. He’s a big Breaking Bad fan (friends with Aaron and Bryan, and his nickname for Rihanna when they dated was Fring). I had tickets close to the stage, and I remember making eye contact with him a few times thinking “dude, you don’t know it, but you know EXACTLY who I am.”

One of my first purchases with acting money was a set of Beats headphones when they were all the craze, and I vividly remember listening to Take Care (and a lot of old Kanye) in my trailer on set during downtime. It felt like a crazy full circle moment.

Anyway, I feel like everyone who is a fellow fan of the show is an extension of this little glitch in the matrix, and I’m happy y’all are a part of this wild story.

I’ll keep answering questions as they trickle in for as long as the mods want to keep the discussion open, and I’ll be more active in this sub and share anything else fun when it comes to mind!

Daniel Moncada, who played the infamous Leonel Salamanca in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, now regularly livestreams video games while dressed as his character from the shows. Despite keeping the same iconic suit, bald head and serious appearance, his streams show a much lighter side of him as he laughs, jokes, talks and plays with viewers while streaming. It has given fans a completely different look at the actor behind one of the franchise's most intimidating characters, while allowing Daniel Moncada to continue engaging with the role years after first playing it.

Got to meet RJ Mitte at the Renaissance Festival on my birthday in 2024

Back in 2024, I was at the Renaissance Festival celebrating my 23rd birthday when I noticed someone in the distance talking to a group of people who looked a LOT like RJ Mitte. I remember turning to the people I was with and asking if I was seeing things or if that was actually him lol.

Eventually I decided to walk up to him and said, “RJ I love your work!” We ended up having a short conversation, and he was genuinely such a nice and down to earth guy. He even asked what brought me out to the Renaissance Festival that day, and when I told him it was my 23rd birthday, he joked about how I only had a couple more years until I was kicked off my parents health insurance 😂

It was such a random interaction but one that I’ll always remember. What stood out to me most was how genuine he seemed. He could’ve easily just said thanks and gone about his day, but he actually took the time to have a conversation with me.

I’m really glad I got the chance to meet him even if it was just for a few minutes. He seemed like a genuinely kind person, and it’s a memory I’ll always appreciate.

In Better Call Saul, does Chuck McGill live just down the block from Jesse Pinkman's Aunt's house?

Screenshot from BCS S03e10. Jimmy arrives at Chuck's house. That Spanish villa looks like the house Jesse Pinkman will later inherit from his aunt in Breaking Bad. Of course that style is likely quite common in upscale areas of ABQ. Definitely looks like the same neighborhood, though.

(Rest in peace, RJ)

Vince Gilligan pays tribute to RJ Mitte

4.8k Upvotes

In a statement to The New York Times, Vince said he’d communicated as recently as September about a Breaking Bad-related business idea of RJ’s. Vince’s full quotes below:

“We couldn’t have picked a better young man to play that role. More importantly, RJ was a good person. He was fun and kind and he had a big heart.

He had an ever-present, crooked grin. In my mind’s eye, I never picture him without it. I always picture him as happy. I’ll continue doing that.

Our crew is devastated. We all watched RJ grow up together, and we were proud of him.

The world has never made much sense to me. It makes even less sense now.”

I had the once in a lifetime pleasure of meeting RJ Mitte on 6/1/23 at my cousin's house in Olmito, TX.

He'd stopped by to drop off his lovely pup with my other two cousins, who were friends with him and would dog sit and house sit on occasion for him while he traveled.

RJ was so humble and down to earth, and seemed to genuinely not mind my starstruck self and equally starstruck dad asking for a quick picture. It was so surreal.

The Mittes have done extraordinary things for Historic Downtown Brownsville. Their philanthropy towards keeping the beauty of the area is something that has been done quietly, but has not gone unnoticed. My heart hurts for RJ's parents, his sister, his fiancee, and everyone whose lives he's touched.

Thank you, RJ, for caring about Brownsville enough to stay, and for taking a quick second to shake my hand and take a picture with me while running a personal errand. The world has undoubtedly lost another beacon of light, but I hope you're resting well.

Anna Gunn pays tribute to RJ Mitte

4.4k Upvotes

"I’ll never forget meeting RJ when he was only 14 years old. I was immediately struck by the depth and complexity of someone so young. He was gentle and bold, exceedingly kind and wickedly funny, a bit rebellious (like any teenager) yet eager to learn and hone his craft. Above all, he was doggedly determined that his disability would not impede him, but would instead give him the opportunity to enlighten and educate others through his nakedly truthful portrayal of Walt “Flynn” Jr.

How lucky we were that RJ came into the Breaking Bad family and lit up our lives. How lucky I was to play his TV mom, to watch him evolve and expand as an actor and human being as the seasons went by, and for all the years after as he continued to serve his community with tireless advocacy and philanthropic work. I was so proud of him; we all were.

There truly are no words to express the heartbreak of a loss this profound, the loss of a beautiful young man who had such an impact upon this world, with still so much ahead of him. What I choose to remember and cherish today are the quiet, personal moments I shared with my beloved son. Moments of mutual support and understanding, of belly-aching laughter and silliness, of care and deep love. You live in my heart forever, my dearest RJ

If you are struggling, please call for the support you need at 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (https://988lifeline.org)."

- Anna

Check in on your friends and family, especially if you think they’re struggling.

I spent about 3 days in the hospital last week after a bad suicidal episode. I’ve been suicidal before but never as bad as it was. Hearing about RJ hit hard. I’m extremely lucky that my family came to my side as soon as I said anything, and if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be here.

So please, check in on your friends and family. Especially if you think they’re struggling with their mental health.

I don’t wanna die, so I texted my family first but not everyone will do that.

That’s all, cheers

Bryan and Anna's eulogies hit different.

Any death is tragic. But parents mourning their children is the worst of the worst.

Even if it was just a fictional family, two actors paying tributes to their on-screen son....is heartbreaking.

In an ideal world, we should have seen RJ Mitte celebrating Bryan's life, 20+ years from now.

How much of a support he was, How much did he learn working with Bryan....

But that's not going to happen. Because we don't live in an ideal world.

Rest in Peace, RJ Mitte. Hope you find the peace you couldn't find among the living.

Walt and the fulminated mercury.

Remember when Walt threw that fulminated mercury when he first met Tuco. Walt threw it right next to him by his own feet and it caused that massive explosion. How did he walk out of that alive?

As bad as Mike is, at least he actually did what he did for his family

I’m not justifying his actions but I find it rather refreshing that Mike actually is doing what he does for his family’s financial benefit and kept that motivation throughout his time in the game while Walters primary motivation switched up pretty quickly.

So, FIVE WEEKS pass in the course of the season 2 finale?

I'm re-watching the show and don't recall catching that before. If you listen to the news reports about the plane crash (in the S3 opening segment) and when they talk about Jane's dad, it says he had recently returned from a five week absence due to a personal loss. Does this seem right? My understanding is the show tends to move fairly slowly in time, and I have trouble from just having watched the season 2 finale believing 5 weeks were contained in it.

The absence would clearly reference Jane's death, which is at the end of the penultimate episode and which he witnesses in the opening of the finale. Wondering if that sounds right, or was he possibly off before her death, dealing with some of her problems or something like that.

Per TMZ, RJ Mitte's fiancee gave him an ultimatum to choose between her and his Mother as the two did not get along. He was reportedly distraught over this friction.

Say what you will about TMZ, but they are nearly always right when reporting inside info like this and are well connected. If true, I feel even worse for the poor guy now. Not judging anyone here because we don't know the full story, but Luis Moncada referenced some personal issues RJ was going through that were crushing him emotionally - wonder if this was it.

What’s your interpretation of Ed’s response to Walt about giving his money to his family

• Upvotes

When Walt asks Ed if he’d give his money to his family once he passes, Ed replies vaguely with “If I said yes, would you believe me?”. Knowing Ed’s character, this seems like an attempt to shut down the conversation and keep himself neutral to the situation, but the more I think about it, I can’t see Ed just taking that cash and pocketing it for himself. It is his due diligence to work with his clients and help them out, so this just seems like an extension of that.

The car wash scenes are where Walt looks the least like a criminal mastermind

I'm rewatching season 4 and I've started finding the whole car wash storyline funnier than I remembered.

Walt can manufacture incredibly pure meth, outsmart dangerous criminals, and improvise his way out of situations that should probably get him killed.

But give him an actual business to run and he's basically a guy who wants to be called the owner without having to deal with any of the boring parts.

The contrast with Skyler is great.

When Saul suggests laser tag as a money laundering business, Skyler immediately sees why it's a terrible cover for Walt. She wants something that connects to his actual employment history. Something ordinary enough that people won't ask a million questions.

She then figures out how to pressure Bogdan into selling the car wash. It's manipulative as hell, but it's also a pretty carefully constructed plan.

Walt, meanwhile, is mostly interested in getting one over on Bogdan.

The scene with the framed first dollar is perfect. Bogdan has this little sentimental symbol of the business he built, and Walt can't resist using it to humiliate him on the way out.

That's his big moment as a new business owner.

Not improving the business. Not thinking about the employees. Just getting the last word against a guy who used to make him wipe down cars.

Then there's the champagne.

They've just acquired a legitimate-looking business to explain their money, and Walt celebrates by buying a $320 bottle of champagne. Skyler immediately starts thinking about how that purchase fits their cover story.

He gets annoyed because, in his mind, he's earned the right to spend money.

She understands that having money and being able to explain where it came from are completely different things.

What's interesting to me is that Walt is genuinely brilliant. The show never suggests otherwise.

He's just terrible at accepting that being brilliant at chemistry doesn't automatically make him brilliant at accounting, business operations, or managing people.

Skyler understands the unglamorous details that make the whole operation believable. And the more seriously she takes those details, the more Walt seems to resent being told what he can and can't do.

It's almost like he escaped a humiliating job at a car wash, built a criminal empire to prove how extraordinary he was, and then ended up owning the exact same car wash.

Except now somebody is still telling him what to do.

I wonder if that's part of why these scenes bother him so much. He finally has the status he wanted, but the actual work of being a business owner is nothing like the fantasy.

Does anyone else find the car wash storyline one of the better demonstrations of Walt's limitations? Not his morality, which gets discussed constantly, but the fact that his intelligence is much more specialized than he wants to admit.

Had Walt planned to take over Gus's empire from the very start?

Being thinking about the scene where Walt kills the drug dealers in order to save Jesse, definitely jeopardising his alliance with Gus: at the moment, it looked like an irrational impulse to save a person he cared for - even if in a toxic, manipulative way - at a high risk for his job and family; after that, he's forced in a war with Gus, which he'll eventually win by the skin of his teeth.

But then, in the last season, he tells Jesse that he's goal was never making money, but building an empire: Walt always wished to be the king, to be able boss people with no one else challenging his ego. What use would have been for him all of Gus's money, if he was still just a cook for him? If we believe that that's what Walt wanted for since the beginning, than he saved Jesse not just out of love, but because he needs him: he's the only character who he's managed to utterly manipulate, who knows both of his faces and he knows he will need his favourite henchman to build his empire. Empire that indeed crumbles the moment Jesse snitches to Hank.

In the end, I think both ways of looking at the scene are true: Walt is a genius, but it's nothing like a perfectly rational person who plans everything in advance; the plot is shaped both by his genius planning and his inexperience as a drug kingpin, impulsive actions and errors. And this is one of the thing making the show unforeseeable. What do you think?

What does Don Hector means by "The Butt Brothers"?

• Upvotes

One of the first times Don Hector mentions it is with their first meeting with Max and Gus where we know what happens. I have seen posts saying he said it because he thought/knew they were homosexuals.

However, it is mentioned a few other times as well, notably when Gus, Hector deliver money to Don Eladio, where Hector's money had rubber bands and Gus's money was neatly wrapped. He says the butt brothers again here.

So the question is, is he trying to just make fun of the name Los Pollos Hermanos or is it a personal/direct insult for Gus?

Jesse Pinkman is a great character, but he wasn't a good person

I think Jesse is one of the best-written characters in Breaking Bad, but I also think fans sometimes give him too much credit when it comes to morality.
