Who was Mother Clara Hale, and why is there a monument to her in Harlem?

Clara Hale, known as Mother Hale, was a humanitarian who devoted her life to caring for children and supporting families in Harlem. In 1969, she founded Hale House, which cared for babies affected by their parents’ substance use and, later, children with HIV.

Sculptor Robert Berks created this monument in her honor. It depicts her surrounded by children, reflecting the care and protection that defined her life. For many years, it stood in front of Hale House on West 122nd Street in Harlem.

It’s a little-known story about New York and a woman whose work left a lasting mark on her community. Had you heard of Mother Clara Hale?

On this day in 1964, US civil rights leader Dr Martin Luther King Jnr was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for helping to combat racial inequality through non-violence. King’s dream was that all US citizens would be judged by their personal qualities and not by the colour of their skin.
