Tabletop BattleTech Buyer's Guide 2026

Post image

Attempted to update my BattleTech Buyer's Guide from years past for 2026.

Admittedly, it was impossible to not include a bunch of caveats in the graph itself, given that the line is in flux with the Core products only partially replacing what is in Total Warfare (and not explicitly invalidating them in the text, like Total Warfare did).

Props to the Catalyst Demo Team and some of the proofers of the Core Rulebook for their feedback on this diagram. I hope this helps people who are looking to get into the BattleTech tabletop games!

EDIT: Admittedly, I was more focused on the "classic" BattleTech elements and the state of the line when putting this together, since it's REALLY confusing right now. However, BattleTech Aces is also a thing and is an excellent expansion to the BattleTech: Alpha Strike line. Those boxes are a natural fit after buying either the Alpha Strike Box Set (as it is a dependency for the Aces boxes) or the Alpha Strike Commander's Edition rulebook.

EDIT 2: A slightly more updated version of the buyer's guide can be found here. This includes information about BattleTech: Aces in the admonitions and describes Alpha Strike as a faster-paced, larger-scale modern wargame instead of as a simplified ruleset.

Meta Why is the Federated Suns combat color NOT YELLOW?

I need to rant about something. Look at any map of the Inner Sphere and you see these nice color coated sections. The Lyrans are blue, the Draconis are red, the FWL are purple, and the Capellans are green. Their colors match the primary colors of their emblems and are the primary colors for their mechs. It makes it easy to tell who is who on the battlefield and it's just good design language. So why in the ever loving hell are the combat colors for the Federated Suns not yellow/orange? Their emblem is yellow/orange, their color on the map is yellow, but the supposedly iconc color for their mechs is Davion green? We already have a green faction, that's the Capellans! I know that I can paint them any color I want but it's still an oversite that Catalyst Game Labs need to correct immediately. Rant over.

Fan Creations Reference sheet for alpha strike in school

Am kicking off Alpha strike again at my school club shortly and have dug out my "Targeting computer" reference sheet, it's just a way for them to track modifiers while they are learning.

Pop a counter on the track to the right and adjust up or down to get your target number!

Anything you think needs adding or removing?

Or any obvious mistakes?

"The Grendel J slammed down into the woods directly in front of his hidden mech. Terrance held his breath - not that it would make a difference from inside the cockpit of his 25 ton Ebony. The monster of a mech somehow hadn't noticed him, and was firing on the rest of his company embattled in the clearing. This was his moment - maybe his last - but he damn sure would make it count..."

An Ebony proxy I modeled up and printed! Man, it was fun. Also very challenging. The Ebony is such a weird but cool design - very dude-in-a-mech-suit. Lots of smooth shapes. I've painted him in my take on the McCarron's Armored Cavalry Second Company. I didn't have the balls to paint on the Confederation icon but I'm happy enough with how he turned out!

Been collecting lance miniatures to paint for a little while already. I guess it’s time to actually start learning to play the tabletop. Are the playing pieces considered game legal still?

Question ❓ Is there lore as to why the clans still have so many mechs? Wasn’t the concept of Omnimechs supposed standardize chassis’s so you could change out gear and weapons?

Sorry if this is a 101 kind of question but I have only read a couple books before clan invasion and watched the old school cartoon and played some of the hairbrain Arano game.

I assumed the concept of mechs that could be customized per mission would standardize mech to single chassis’s per weight or even less than mechs in general but it does seem like there are TONS of mechs for clans

Another incredible piece of artwork for the Wraith video I produced for Youtube.

This is another one by Jayden Morris, this time depicting a Word of Blake Wraith (Praise Blake!), fighting against a Ghost Bear Locust IIC.

Jayden always delivers incredible artwork, and I'm over the moon for his contributions for this video. It's awesome.

Before and after of my 1st Canopian Cuirassiers' new Griffin, leftover from the days when they were occupied by the SLDF.

The method I use has a base coat of Army Painter's "Sunburst Ochre" which doesn't have the typical disgusting green hue of most yellow on black paints and then Arny Painter's primary yellow "Daemonic Yellow" on top, both done with dry brushing only to give it the basic grungy appearance (pic 3) before I clearcoat it and add a dark wash

Lore I wonder if the Great Reavings might have been one of the reasons behind Clan Wolf-in-Exile's decline.

Thumbnail

The Great Reavings established a system of periodic Trials that allowed the Clans that had migrated to the Inner Sphere to expand, seize, restore, and create Bloodnames.

The Council of Six Clans, which established this system, didn't have much influence, but it's specifically mentioned that Clan Wolf-in-Exile and Clan Nova Cat weren't included.

From what I've been able to find, Clan Wolf-in-Exile doesn't seem to have gained any additional Bloodnames...

If they really never adopted this system, I think I might be starting to see another reason why Clan Wolf-in-Exile declined.

It's actually pretty common for small groups living in exile to become even more traditionalist than their original homeland or culture, clinging more tightly to their traditions and legitimacy while resisting change.

So maybe that's what happened here, too?

Discussion How's the UAC treating you these days?

I recently mentioned the Patton / Rommel dichotomy in another conversation. And I was thinking about it - the Rommel usually goes for damage; the Patton for stability... But not always. So, I was taking a look at old Vehicle of the Week articles on the main BT forum. And, on the Patton, they were lit on fire because of the UAC/10 Patton versus the Gauss Rommel; the Gauss was more "Patton" and the UAC/10 was unsuitable. They should have been flipped, or something. They went on for a few pages arguing about the relative merits.

And I wouldn't mind getting a can of gasoline with some bottles and rags on the main forum, but gas is expensive. Anyway, I wanted to know.

How's UAC been treating everyone with the new changes lately?

It's certainly less of a joke now, I suppose. A lot of the time when I pulled UAC out before, it was a meme. A Malice with 4xUAC/10 with XXL and Composite Structure, an existence living to spread a certain sort of misery. A 2xUAC/20 Nova Cat. 2xUAC/5+2xLRM-5 Bulldog based on the 2xAC/2 Bulldog, etc. 3-5xUAC/2 in various applications, an Ontos with stacks of UAC/5. Mostly built for lulz; "If it works, it works." It's almost a shame that half the guns don't break themselves on an opening turn. ... Almost.
