Sonography Program
Hi! I’m a 23F looking into the sonography program at BCIT. Just looking for any insight and things to keep in mind or advice. I have read quite a bit of forums on here talking about the career itself and I think it would be a great career for me despite of the high risk of injury. I work currently as a dental receptionist and have thoroughly enjoy the patient care aspect of my job. Being a part of the hospital/healthcare system is something I’ve always considered as well (I’m Filipino lol). Along with the benefits of working in a union, pension, wages, benefits etc. (that my current job doesn’t offer), I do also find the problem solving aspect of the career attractive.
I’m worried/ intimidated as my highest level of education is high school and I didn’t have excellent grades on my last year— peak covid times so it was a difficult time mentally… I also didn’t take physics 12 so I’m not sure how to go about that. I am going to attend the expo this evening to see if I can get more info that way as well! Are there any tips that anyone can recommend for me to start on? Is it worth for me to try to get into? Do I need volunteer hours?
Brutally honest opinions are welcomed hahaha. I appreciate it!

I think the main thing with BCIT is it’s like hiking a mountain at double your normal pace (most programs are double the time in speed than regular post secondaries). At some point you really feel burnt out especially, if you struggle academically, so I think if you have very good motivation under pressure you will do fine.

This is super valuable to know— good analogy to look at it too. Thanks!

Ultrasound is a very competitive program to get into, but don’t let that discourage you.
You have patient care experience which is a great starting point. However, you need high marks to get in, >90% in Math, Physics and Biology.
Start by taking some prerequisites, you could also consider some volunteer work in a hospital.

Thanks for this! >90% in math physics and bio sounds super intimidating for me! As I’ve been out of school for quite some time. But it definitely makes sense as you mentioned it’s quite a competitive program!

There are people in the program with these markes, but not not every accepted applicant has high marks or a university degree. I think it can't hurt to upgrade your marks/refresh the material if you have the time and money because as someone else said, there is a lot of work at a fast pace.
if you have work experience there is no technical requirement that you need to fufill with volunteer hours. What might be helpful is seeing if you can shadow a sonographer to make sure you really want to do the program as it is competative and quite difficult

These are great questions to ask at big info. The faculty and program reps are pretty candid and approachable.
Every intake is different.
