culture & society Sexual and family violence against children at 'crisis point', study finds
“In short:
Violence and sexual violence against children have increased sharply across Australia, research by the University of Sydney has found.
The study examined Australian administrative data from 2014 to 2024, including police recorded assaults, hospitalisations, and child protection data.
The lead researcher says we are at a "crisis point" and that all levels of government need to respond.”

politics Anne Aly accuses Liberal MP Angie Bell of racism over 'stoning' comment
Liberal MP Angie Bell has suggested Small Business Minister Anne Aly and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese should be publicly "shamed and stoned".
Ms Bell made the remarks while delivering a speech in parliament backing a Coalition bill to reverse the ATO's ban on credit card payments.
Ms Bell has withdrawn the comments, but Ms Aly has described the remarks as racist, misogynistic, and contrary to Australian values.

no politics Important topic time- Potato chips. Smith's Thinly Cut VS Thins
This only applies to the thinly cut chips. Nothing about how kettle chips rule supreme or tasty toobs are the bomb.
This debate is purely about the thinly cut potato chip.
I have no idea why Thins are so bad. The chips themselves have a weird texture almost like they are half stale.
Smith's thinly cut all the way for me!

no politics Where to print photos? NSFW
I have a couple of art pieces I’d like to print; but they’re adult in nature.
Technically officeworks/kmart doesn’t allow that.
Anywhere else I can go to easily print without causing offence to people?

culture & society ABC reporter could face disciplinary action over opinion piece, journalists’ union says | Australian Broadcasting Corporation
"ABC management has refused to rule out disciplinary action against a journalist and union office-holder for writing an opinion piece for the Australian Financial Review, according to the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA).
The award-winning ABC climate journalist, Michael Slezak, had an article published last week in Nine’s financial newspaper in his capacity as federal president of MEAA.
The AFR described Slezak, who is also head of the ABC house committee, as federal president of media at the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance and an ABC journalist.
The article was about a proposal by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (Asic) to restrict journalists from accessing information such as the home address and date of birth of company directors, an issue the union is campaigning on."

political satire Actually, you shall not pass - Pat Hudson
Editorial cartoon by Pat Hudson. A massive demon labelled ‘fossil fuels’ is burning in flames and churning out smoke as it looms over a tiny figure wearing a robe, that has walked out of the High Court of Australia. The figure stands beneath the demon, raises a finger and says, “Actually, you shall not pass”

no politics Coca-Cola is passing the psychological barrier of $1 a can in the supermarket
In the supermarket (Coles / Wollies / Aldi included) its always been my hard limit that once we exceed $1 a can (on special, obviously) then its time to rethink drinking the stuff (which lots of you are going to tell me I should anyway). I'm in NSW, I know prices vary with the deposit refund schemes around the country.
This week none of the major grocery retailers in NSW core Coca-Cola products for under this psychological barrier for the first time that I can recall, across all pack sizes. Is this a turning point for the brand in Australia? Or is it just a pre-xmas price jack to offer better specials?
