News Hilltop Hoods honoured with laneway and mural in Adelaide CBD

Pioneering Australian hip hop group Hilltop Hoods rapped about "Goin' down a hard road" in 2006.
Now, the Adelaide trio are being honoured with a laneway in their hometown.

Clubhouse Lane, running off Hindley Street in Adelaide's CBD, was renamed Hilltop Hoods Lane at a ceremony today.

Two large-scale murals featuring the group and their associated iconography, created by Adelaide artist Vans the Omega, run down both sides of the laneway.

The Hoods, who still call Adelaide home, say it's an "incredible honour" to have their own laneway in the heart of the city they know and love.

In short:

Adelaide University is set to offer staff over the age of 55 early retirement packages and has left the door open to a round of voluntary redundancies.

The new merger university opened in January backed by a $464.5 million SA government package but is grappling with a drop in international student revenue.

What's next?

Vice-Chancellor Professor Nicola Phillips has warned staff not to "underestimate how carefully we're going to need to manage costs for the foreseeable future".

So to anyone who bought into the LMCT scam with their new servo launch, it’s now the same price as the surrounding servos. I wonder how many morons paid the $99

Self Just a bit of a rant about living next to the T2D works.

Myself and my partner live on the Gallipoli Underpass South Road on-ramp. I get it, noise is part and parcel of living on a main road, but I’m at my wits end with the behaviour of the T2D Alliance and its fleet of ‘contractors’, knowing there’s zero reprecussions for doing whatever they want on a Government infrastructure project, and I just want to have a bit of a whinge.

It started back in February. We received a generic flyer advising of ongoing utility relocation works, with the closure of on-street parking on the on-ramp, as well as an assurance we would be advised of disruptions on an ad hoc basis. Fair enough, you gotta do whatever you gotta do, but since then has been nothing short of an absolute nightmare.

It first started when they arrived at 1am one night to cut the trees down with chainsaws along the verges on the ramp. We figured it was a one time thing given the issues with the posters on trees on other sections of South Road, it was not.

Fast forward to right now, it’s currently 11pm, there is a droning vacuum truck blocking our driveway, and the current noise level in my upstairs bedroom with triple glazed windows is currently 65dB. This has been occurring 5 nights a week on various stretches of the on ramp and Eurilpa Avenue for the last 3 months, minimum. We have received ONE (1) halfhearted flyer throughout this time period advising of a noise disruption, and it was after our strata rep borderline verbally abused a community liaison at the office a couple months ago. Who had the nerve to reference the flyer posted back in February, as the disruption warning for concrete drilling outside our complex at 3am in mid-August.

If you’ve travelled along Anzac highway semi-recently you may have noticed the portable sign advertising on ramp road closures and night work activities. This is the only notice we’ve been getting too, if we’re lucky. I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve come home from work late and have had to time my drive the wrong way up South Road just to get into my driveway, even on nights where the stupid sign hasn’t said the road was going to be shut. There was even a period where backstreet access was shut, so for two weeks I had to park my car and walk 10 minutes home after work. Oh, there was also that time they dug up our driveway to relay a pipe without telling anyone, so we had a 3 hour stretch during the day (11am-2pm) where no one could get in or out of our complex (8 townhouses)

We’ve been shouted at multiple times by traffic controllers for trying to flag that were local traffic despite dialogue from community liaisons that they’re meant to be allowing traffic through for local residents, and the amount of rubbish they just throw into our yard because they’re too lazy to find a bin honestly astounds me, and if our dog wasn’t incredibly well trained, probably would have more consequences.

Every single email everyone in my complex that I’ve spoken to has sent to the info email has gone ignored. Our strata rep occasionally heads down to the office but the most he gets out of them is hollow apologies and vague promises of doing better in the future. I understand the issue. This project is a web of contractors who don’t really report to anyone, and you can’t exactly oversee stuff like this because the work needs to be done. I’ve asked politely in the past why this work cannot be done during the day, given they’ve already closed the area where they’re operating to traffic, but alas, they won’t respond to my emails.

My partner and I are incredibly lucky that we have somewhat sympathetic employers who have allowed us to use sick leave and come in late after nights where we can’t hear ourselves think until 4am, but even that runs out at some point. I can’t remember the last time I had a good nights sleep during the week, and despite the initial flyer telling us this would be done in early Q3, we’re now halfway into October with no end in sight, and no straight answer from anyone, just that it is still ‘ongoing’.

Thank you for reading, I hope you have a good rest of your week. If you see someone in the news for egging construction workers, just know I tried every other avenue first. xx

Discussion “Park Safe” AI revenue raising cars in Adelaide City Council

I hate these. Would anyone sign a petition to stop them? They’re bad at their job, they constantly make mistakes, and moreover NOBODY asked for them. I hate that they’re called “Park Safe” too, dressing themselves up like their whole point is to make our city “safer”. Bullshit. Just another way to stretch thin our privacy and raise revenue. Anyone with me?

News Another SA precinct gives police sweeping powers

From tomorrow, SA Police will have extra powers in the Glenelg entertainment district, with Moseley Square, Glenelg Jetty and the tram stop on the popular strip marked as part of a Declared Public Precinct.

The extra powers given to police in Declared Public Precincts include the right to conduct metal detector searches to find weapons and drug searches. Police can also ban a person from the area for up to 24 hours if they commit an offence, are offensive or behave in a disorderly manner.

It comes about two weeks after police brought forward its Operation Jericho across the western suburbs coastline to crack down on disorderly behaviour after videos emerged online of young people fighting at Henley Square and Glenelg.

What an amazing holiday, I'm from Perth and you folks have a great, clean city. First thing I noticed was how easy it was to walk around and how easy going people are in the mall and around town. Good food and coffee, Hahndorf is awesome. I touched Malls Balls and then a local walked past and told me to immediately wash my hands which I did. Glenelg was a lovely area too and I could 100% see myself living here. One single gripe I have, can you guys swap the schooners for pints? Also what is an imperial pint?

on the 7th this month I went to the old gaol with my Kodak No. 1A Junior, made in 1920. i took a few photos, this is the standout one. there are a couple of light leaks as the bellows are very old and worn, i plan to seal the pinholes in the future and try again. i'm glad the light leaks avoided the main subject of the photo. i used 120 film with 3d printed adapters. i'm very happy with this result even though there are imperfections because it's my first time using film and i think the blemishes give it a little bit of character. what do you think?

Discussion Theatre anxiety

Going to a gig by myself and super anxious.

It's a comedy show with my absolute favourite comedian of all time at Thebarton theatre. I don't do great in crowds and usually lean on my partner to get through but he's not coming so I'm just getting so anxious. I've never been to this theatre which is making it worse, I'm limited mobility in that I can't stand/walk for more than a few minutes due to a spine condition causing leg weakness and pain. I'll be getting dropped off and am wondering if people know how early I can get there to be able to enter and sit down without having to queue? Will I be able to sit inside the lobby?

I'm also anxious about my ticket not working as I've never used a digital ticket before. If it doesn't work, will staff be able to sort it on the night?

I know I sound ridiculous. It will be much easier to just bail but I know I'd regret it for the rest of my life because like I said, huge fan of this comedian and will be devo if I can't get my shit together and go.

Question Suitcase rummage in Adelaide

Does anyone have any recommendation for anything similar to this:

https://www.instagram.com/suitcaserummages/

I want to sell stuff from my wardrobe, but I can’t really find anything as low key as this in Adelaide. I know there’s things like Gilles Markets, but they charge like $150 for a stall, and it’s mostly resellers running an overpriced vintage clothes market.

I’m also aware of preloved stores where you pay to have your items on a rack for 2 weeks.

I looked into car boot markets as well like the one in Christie’s Beach, but I’m really just looking for something closer to the city and that specialises in selling stuff out of your suitcase, and doesn’t charge you over $100 to do that.

Question Bike path along northern expressway

• Upvotes

I'm planning to cycle from port Adelaide to Gawler on the bike path that follows the northern expressway. But I can't quite tell where it goes to in Gawler? It seems like there isn't much along the way, but looks like it goes close enough to Salisbury and Munno para if I have to bail along the way?

Anyone else done it before?

Question We have spoken about Powderfinger tickets but how are people going with the real main event; Nickelback?

With a few pre sales down (Live Nation this morning), how did we fare?

I got into the wait room at 0931 and my wife at about 0935 from work. When it opened i had just over people 2000 ahead of me, she somehow had about 1200. Anyway she got in and got us tickets but many sections were single seats or sold out by the time she got access.

Best of luck everyone and here's to dad rock!!!

News Michelin Guide arrives in South Australia in Australian-first

In short:

South Australia will become the first in Australia to feature on the world-renowned Michelin Guide.

Anonymous inspectors have been dining in restaurants across the state to hand-pick locations.

The first SA restaurants to feature in the Guide will be revealed at a ceremony on Wednesday evening.

If Barnacle Bills doesn't feature in the Michelin Guide, then this is a farce and a travesty to our fish god Bill. /s.

Question West Aussie in ADL: What to do?

Hi all! I’m 18F going to visit my sister 23F in adelaide for a week in december. I’m from western australia, and typically my holidays involve going down south to margaret river wine regions, and crystal clear beaches up north.

What can me and my sister do in the weeks before christmas to make the most of spending time with eachother. We grew up together and are very close but she moved away to be with her partner a few years ago, and we only get to see eachother once a year if we’re lucky.

I like to drink and I have tried every high end restaurant in western australia. I want to spoil her to a nice dinner as she doesn’t get to do those things very often. I’m also thinking about doing a puppy yoga as she’s said there’s heaps here. What else can we do to fill up an entire week?

Thank you!!!
