Safety Trail Etiquette Reminder

Thumbnail
39 Upvotes

Folks new to walking, running, and cycling public trails may not yet be familiar with the ways we ensure safety and courtesy on shared paths.

This crosspost from r/Austin describes a common problem these days in which a large group does not yield to opposing traffic by tightening up to allow the others to pass safely.

Here are the basic rules of trail etiquette on our urban trails. What have you seen lately that goes against these? How did you handle it?

  1. Stay to the right (as you would on the highway).

  2. Take up no more than 1/2 of the trail with your bodies/bikes/strollers. This may mean single file or 2 abreast; break up your group if needed. If the path has a center stripe, stay on the right side of it.

  3. Yield to those moving slower. This means bikes yield to all, runners yield to walkers, walkers yield to stroller pushers.

  4. Pass on the left. Use a bell or your voice to warn, “On your left.”

  5. Step off to the side of the path if you need to stop. Do not block the path.

Route Request Where do you do hill repeats around North Austin (Round Rock/Georgetown)?

Training for Austin Marathon in February and finally adding hill work to the plan. Looking for recommendations on where people actually do their repeats.

What I'm after:

- Something in the 400–800m range at 5–8% grade

- Safe to run up and down repeatedly without crossing traffic

- North side preferred (Georgetown/Round Rock/Pflugerville) but willing to drive for a good one

Where do you go? Specific streets or parks appreciated.

Looking to join up some run clubs - for context I’m 28 former D2 cross country and track runner still run about 20-30 miles a week when I’m not training for anything. Typically avg mid to low 7 min miles for my runs but totally cool with hanging at whatever pace, just trying to meet new people! Open to suggestions

Route Request Training for Bandera in Austin? Similar terrain?

After DNF'ing a race in Sept (got caught in thunderstorms above treeline, my only DNF that I haven't second guessed :) ), I'm thinking of adding another block to this year and making a go at Bandera 100k.

If you've done Bandera, what trails in the Austin area are similar to the terrain down there? I usually use Bull Creek Preserve/St Eds and Violet Crown/Sweet 16 for hills, all of which are shattered limestone. Are those representative in composition and general up and down to the course at Bandera?

Specifically, how do the elevation profiles of Austin trails compare to Bandera? Are the hills there longer and steeper or similar?

Other than Hill of Life and Riverplace, anywhere else nearby to get some practice on?

Run Gear Night Runners: do you use yellow-tinted glasses to reduce bright-light glare?

I've started running at night the past couple of months and there's always a car or two with headlights that are so insanely bright I often lose visibility of what's in front of me and have to stop to the side. Recently, I've noticed a few bicyclists and walker / runners sometimes also use these high powered lights on their handlebars or head lamps that are equally as blinding - but now they're directly in front of me on the same sidewalk or path. Have any of you tried running with yellow-tinted glasses? Or know of anything that helps with this?

Safety Lost keys on the Ann and Roy Butler Trail

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi Runners!

I dropped my keys somewhere in the south east part of the trail, most probably in the marked section (see map). It was a bunch of 5 keys and probably fell along with a packet of sting run gel. Happened on 9/27 between 8:30 and 9:30. Please reach out to me if anyway noticed it or picked it up.

Thank you!

Running Event Any 8K or 10K races in a 50 mile radius on Saturday?

I’m training for a marathon and am currently following Pfitz 18/55. This Saturday I’m supposed to run a 8-10K race, followed by a long run on Sunday (so races on Sunday is out of the question).

I had a quick look on Run Guides and Run Signup but didn’t see anything. I was curious if you guys knew of anything in a 50 mile radius.

If there doesn’t end up being anything I can just run a time trial by myself, but I was hoping for something that could give me some more race day experience/adrenaline if possible.

Why would anyone still use that app called Sweatpals after hearing about how they sell all your data and how they target & sabotage small businesses that won't work with them?????

Run Buddy Missed runner connection - “No Headphones”

I have long-run-brain regrets! I met you yesterday morning on the lake trail. You were a close-cropped handsome guy in gray, and I was a blonde-brunette woman in my 40s wearing a green Salomon vest.

You said good morning to me and when I was startled, you pointed and said, we’re the only ones without headphones. We ran together and chatted for a minute and I told you about my love of The History of Salt and Born to Run as long run listening when I do wear headphones...

I sort of shooed you off after a couple minutes because you were speedier than me and I was 8 miles into a 13 mile run and somewhat dying. And I regret how I did that; our conversation was nice, and I regret not even getting your name. Are you single? 😂

Even if not, thanks for being friendly and sociable in a lonely world where no one hears or talks to each other anymore.

Run Buddy Any beginner runners in Austin looking for people to run with?

Thumbnail groupme.com
16 Upvotes

Hey Austin! I’m pretty new to running and noticed there are probably a lot of other people in the same boat—wanting to start running but not necessarily ready to jump into a serious or fast-paced run club.

I’ve been connecting with a few people who are also beginners, and we’re putting together a small community called **One Mile at a Time ATX**.

Nothing competitive or intimidating. The idea is simply to have other people to run with, hold each other accountable, meet new people, and gradually improve together. **All paces are welcome, and no one gets left behind.**

We’re mainly looking at weekend mornings and will figure out future routes/times together as the group grows.

If you’re a beginner, getting back into running, or have been putting off starting because you don’t want to run alone, feel free to reach out. Would be cool to build something together from the ground up.

**One mile at a time. 🏃‍**♂️🤘🏽

Route Request 2 mile hill/incline, somewhat central?

I’m looking for an extended climb to train on, ideally ~2 miles—doesn’t need to be steep, can have rollers etc, just no long descents—and within the city / somewhat centrally located. <3

Run Buddy Run clubs for 40+ injury prone runners?

Title is as stated. I used to be a competitive runner (D1 track, seeded in a few half marathons) but as I’ve gotten older, got married, etc., I’ve become more fixated on running longevity - less training for my next race. I run 12-15 miles a week and my pace is anywhere from 7:30 on tempos to 14 on a midday summer shake out.

I’m looking to find a group I can run with on occasion but have found that running clubs are a SCENE. Much love for my 20 y/o friends but I’d like to find folks in a similar place on their fitness journey and don’t want to kill myself with track workouts or single track trail runs. Any suggestions?

Route Request New to Austin - Running Routes

Looking for new running routes. I’m new to Austin and I’ve been doing the 10-mile Lady Bird Lake loop, but I’m ready to mix it up, especially looking for somewhere I can get some hill work in. I’m based in South Austin, but I don’t mind driving a bit for something good.

Also, what exactly is the Zilker Park route? I keep seeing it mentioned.

Safety Lower temp, higher humidity VS higher temp, lower humidity

I’ve always woken up early to be outside while the temperature is the “lowest” of the day. However, I’ve noticed that the humidity this year has made it unbearable. I was running yesterday and it was 90% humidity! I felt like I was swimming, not running.

I‘ve recently experimented running in the evenings where it’s technically hotter, but the humidity is lower and it seems to help?

I also think it’s partially bc my sweat has the chance to somewhat evaporate in the evenings.

Just curious if anyone else does this intentionally. Or if I’m crazy, lol.

Side note: any recommendations for shorts for REALLLYYYY sweaty runners? I am wringing out all of my clothes during and after my runs.

Run Gear Austin runners: Any recommendations for where to learn basic weightlifting that supports your routines?

I’m a longtime runner, but i’ve pretty much eschewed strength training my whole life.

Now that I’m getting older, I’d like weave in 1-2 days a week where I do some weightlifting so that I can be a little stronger and a healthier runner.

I pretty much am looking to learn just the very basics: bench, squat, deadlift.

I’m skinny and never learned how to do that stuff in school 😭 so hopefully it’s a place that’s beginner/runner friendly.

I’m in the hyde park area so something near would of course be ideal.

Run Gear Are your shoes wearing down faster than usual in this heat?

I got a new pair of ASICS Novablasts about 1 month ago and the tread is wildly worn down at only 12-15 miles per week. I’m assuming the heat is not helping with this as I run primarily in the evenings. Anyone else experiencing something similar with their shoes and this hot weather?

Running Event Who else had timed their run perfectly yesterday?

I saw it coming and knew it'd be my only chance for a cool run until October. Watched the radar and left the porch when the green pixels started to breach my neighborhood.

It started sprinkling as I left the house and I hoped against hope the rain dome would fail. And fail it did! 5 glorious miles of refreshing downpour!

And now I stare out the window at a bluebird sky and resign myself to the wet, hot blanket that will suffocate me later today.

Route Request Options for paved 20 mile routes

Hi yall, I live 78702 and am getting quite bored of long runs on walnut creek trail and town lake. What are some routes I could do for 20 miles instead?

-I am willing to drive
-loops or out and back are fine
-mostly or all paved
-no running on roads
-minimal or no traffic lights
