Culture Help with making a Ukrainian character.

Hello :) i apologize if the flair is incorrect.

I am working on a comic for a few years now, and I have a character who is Ukrainian. i want to get the point of view of Ukrainians for making this character. Are there any specific things i should be avoiding? anything you would like to see? His name is Rostyslav Vovk. Is the name fine? I am from the middle east so my knowledge is limited. Research helps of course but I thought it would be nice to get some insight. Thank you in advance, have a great day ❤️

Edit: if there are perhaps any habits or sayings that i can add for him considering where he’s from, they would be interesting to hear and incorporate as well. maybe some Ukrainian words he uses as filler words when speaking english? anything at all to make him feel more authentic is appreciated 💞

Travel Planning to move to Ukraine. Is a starting salary of UAH 40,000 realistic for me?

Hope it's a right question for this sub

I speak Russian (native), Turkish (native), Ukrainian (C1), Azerbaijani (B2), English (C1, IELTS 7.5) and German (C1, Goethe Zertifikat C1).

Graduated with bachelor's in econometrics from a mid tier uni in Turkey with a gpa of 3.3/4.0

Two internships in Azerbaijan, totalling approximately five months, in credit analysis and accounting.

Technical skills: Python, R, Sql, Power Bi, Excel.

I'm also considering obtaining the CFA Level I and FRM Part I certifications, tho I'm not sure how well known they are among recruiters.

Azerbaijani citzen.

For plethora of personal reasons I really want to move to Ukraine, specifically Kyiv.

So my questions are:

  1. Is earning UAH 40,000 net per month realistic for a fresh graduate with this profile?
  2. How competitive would I be against Ukrainian graduates applying for junior financial analyst, credit risk analyst, trading roles, or other entry level positions?
  3. How much of a disadvantage would my Azerbaijani citizenship and the additional employment paperwork create? Would companies realistically be willing to hire and sponsor a foreign junior candidate?
  4. How in demand are part time, remote language tutors in Ukraine, particularly for Turkish and German? Considering tutoring as a part time job too

Travel I was checked by the police and entered into some database, is that standard practice?

I am a citizen of an EU country. I was in Kyiv in 2022, before the invasion. At a metro station, a police officer approached me and asked me to step into a room for a security check. They checked my documents, had me empty my pockets, and counted the cash in my wallet. Then, they entered my details from passport into a tablet. Since the officer didn't speak English, we tried communicating using a mix of Russian and Ukrainian, I had learned the former in school.

Is it normal for my details to have been entered into a database? Since this was before the invasion, perhaps they were looking for spies. Will I face any issues if I visit Ukraine this year?

Culture The grey passport

Post image
58 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I recently came across some information about stateless passports. I know they are relatively common in Latvia and Estonia, but I also heard that Ukraine issues grey passports to people with stateless status. I was curious about how many people hold these passports and what their purpose is, especially if around 40,000 people are believed to have one. I’ve attached a picture of the passport I’m referring to for context.

Politics What would have to happen to Ukraine for Ukraine to surrender?

With the way things or going (respectively with the way the things are going according to my media diet), I fully expected that the war should be close to end by about Spring 2029.

But now that Trump has dropped any pretenses that he’s not on Pukin’s side, I highly doubt that and since many people here seem to doubt Ukraine can even last 3 more years, I’m also losing my hope that Ukraine ever wins. Unless Democrats win these midterm elections in such a big numbers that Republicans will accept the writing on the wall and will finally stop supporting Trump in at least some of the most egregious things he does, like supporting America’s historic enemy, Russia.

But while he’s threatening with stopping PURL program and sharing intel if Ukraine doesn’t stop hitting Russian oil infrastructure and his bestie, Mellon Husk sure would love to cut Ukraine off of Starlink, at this point I wouldn’t be surprised if he announces $100 billion bailout to Russia and sending them weapons.

And as much as this sub isn’t really as optimistic as all the pro Ukraine subs that are actually overwhelmingly made up of non Ukrainians, what do you think will have to happen for Ukraine to surrender? Would Ukraine turn into wrecked wasteland with UN humanitarians running around distributing food and medicine like Syria during its civil war before they give up or would it take less than that? There was a poll done recently that 79% of Ukrainians believe that they will win. So I’d like to know the true feelings.

Culture A Ukrainian Superhero?

Over here in the US, I want to create a superhero for Ukraine.

My original idea was to call him Kuvalda, but that name has a terrible Russian mercenary connotation, so now, corrected...

I want to call him Hromobii. A great thanks to the inspirations from you all. Hromobii is a "brick" archetype: tough, strong, with protection against physical damage. He is an older hero in his late 30s now, and would be the second superhero to use the Hromobii name. He is deliberate but determined, and he probably has a power hammer attached to his superhero suit with a long, two handed handle.

What colors does Hromobii wear today? I imagine him wearing metallic gray with glowing orange circuitry, changing into this uniform after a heavy orange uniform during the revolution in 2004-2005.

Politics Do you think women should be subject to the same conscription rules as men?

Given the recent developments in the EU I am curious on what people think about conscripting women. As an outsider I don’t really know what to think, I hate the idea of conscription but Ukraine is currently defending its existential existence.

However, I can’t understand why women should be exempt from conscription, even if you think that they are unable to serve on the front lines surely there are other positions that could be filled which aren’t front line? Hell even outside of military service.

I am truly not trying to instigate, but am genuinely curious on if you agree or disagree and the rationale. Thanks

Edit: To be more clear I wasn’t attempting to advocate that it should happen, I don’t know what to think about conscription as a whole as I said above.

History Do you think that Ukrainian people did some major political mistake?

I finally finished the Serhii Plokhy book Gates of Europe, which is a concise history of Ukraine from late prehistory to just before the full scale invasion. I remember very little of it, because I’m not used to reading information-thick history books, but that’s not really that important here.

Anyway. The last 30-40 pages are about sovereign and independent Ukraine. There I learned about how horrible some conditions were. Government assets were sold for a penny on a dollar which gave birth to the oligarchy class, Kuchmagate and of course election of Viktor Yanukovych.

I learned that Kuchma was largely pro-Russian and in his second term, he acted like Putin wannabe. Then Ukraine rejected Yuschenko who was trying to push the country towards the West as Ukrainians wanted, but instead of reelecting him, Ukrainians then elected Kuchma’s former protege Yanukovych who was Putin’s puppet who pushed for laws that made parliament weaker and the president more powerful, which ended with the Revolution of Dignity and Putin subsequently annexing Crimea.

And then there was Poroshenko and of course Zelenskyy after him.

The book says that both Yuschenko and Poroshenko made some pretty significant strides against corruption, lowering the influence of the oligarch class and passing laws to protect consumers. But Ukrainians were unsatisfied, so they didn’t give them another chance.

And I heard that the full scale invasion may not have happened had Poroshenko won reelection, because he was nationalistic and strongly anti Russian, while Zelenskyy was actually favored by Russia, because they thought he’d be easy to manipulate for having no political experience and because his comedy was popular in Russia. And because he wanted to make peace with Russia.

So I’ve been wondering if Ukrainians ever think about the past and regret their choices. Like if they should have given Yuschenko another chance to prevent Yanukovych’s treason or if they should have reelected Poroshenko. Or if they shouldn’t have elected Kuchma.

By the same token, what about some distant past? Like if Bohdan Khmelnitskiy shouldn’t have made an alliance with Russia (although I’m probably reaching here). Or are there some other mistakes that your old heroes may have done that could have hindered Ukraine’s development?

Travel Best way to get my bicycle (and me) from Kyiv back to Moldova?

Post image

Wow, it’s been a successful ride. But with the rains coming I don’t dare continue riding on the roadsides; I’d like to use a bus or train to get back to Chisinau, or at least to a border crossing. I’ve read that the overnight trains are not good if I have large baggage; my own experience in other countries is that the “private bus lines” are the perfect solution. If you know, please let me know! Thanks!

Politics Why does a majority of Ukraine's population think Zelensky should not run for president again when elections are held?

Please only respond if you are Ukrainian.

From someone who supports Ukraine living in the United States, Zelensky has held off Russia spectacularly given the situation (current and past timeline). He has garnered support from most western nations. He is liked abroad (which means more support for Ukraine's war). If you elect someone new, they might not have the same support.

I ask this from someone who has a deplorable person for their president. Zelensky actually cares about Ukraine. Not all leaders care about their nation.

I would MUCH rather have Zelensky as my president rather than the cheeto buffoon the U.S. has.
