[Subreddit Business] Clarifications on our Watsonian/Doylist rule, general questions, and r/WhatIfFiction

Hi guys,

If you're new, welcome to r/AskScienceFiction, and if you're a returning user, welcome back! This subreddit is designed to be like the r/AskScience subreddit, but for fictional universes, and with all questions and answers written from a Watsonian perspective. That is to say, the questions and answers should be based on the in-universe information, rules, and logic of the fictional work. All fictional works are welcome here, not just sci-fi.

Lately we've been seeing some confusion over what counts as Watsonian, what counts as Doylist, what sort of questions would be off-topic on this subreddit, and what sort of answers are allowed. This stickied post is meant to address such uncertainties and clear things up.

1) Watsonian vs Doylist

The term "Watsonian" means based on the in-universe information, rules, and logic of the fictional work. In contrast, "Doylist" means discussions based on out-of-universe considerations. So, for example, if someone asked, "Why didn't the Fellowship ride the Eagles to Mordor?", a possible Watsonian answer would be, "The Eagles are a proud and noble race, they are not a taxi service." Whereas a rule-breaking Doylist answer might be something like, "Because then the story would be over in ten minutes, and that'd be boring."

We should note that answering in a Watsonian fashion does not necessarily mean that we should pretend that these works are all real, or that we should ignore the fact that they are movies or shows or books or games, or that the creators' statements on the nature of these works should be disregarded.

To give an example, if someone asked, "How powerful would Darth Vader have been if he never got burned?", we can quote George Lucas:

"Anakin, as Skywalker, as a human being, was going to be extremely powerful, but he ended up losing his arms and a leg and became partly a robot. So a lot of his ability to use the Force, a lot of his powers, are curbed at this point, because, as a living form, there’s not that much of him left. So his ability to be twice as good as the Emperor disappeared, and now he’s maybe 20 percent less than the Emperor."

In such a case, "according to George Lucas, he would've been around twice as powerful as the Emperor" would be a perfectly acceptable Watsonian answer, because Lucas is also speaking from a Watsonian perspective.

Whereas if someone associated with the creation of Star Wars had said something like, "He'd be as powerful as we need him to be to make the story interesting", this would be a Doylist answer because it's based on out-of-universe reasoning. It would not be an acceptable answer on this subreddit even though it is also a quote from the creators of the fictional work.

2) General questions

General questions often do not have a meaningful Watsonian answer, because it frequently boils down to "whatever the author decides". For instance, if someone asked, "How does FTL space travel work?", the answer would vary widely with universe and author intent; how FTL works in Star Trek differs from how it works in Star Wars, which differs from how it works in Dune, which differs from how it works in Mass Effect, which differs from how it works in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, etc. General questions like this, in which the answer just boils down to "whatever the author wants", will be removed.

There are some general questions that can have meaningful Watsonian answers, though. For example, questions that are asking for specific examples of things can be given Watsonian answers. "Which superheroes have broken their no-kill rules?" or "Which fictional wars have had the highest casualty counts?" are examples of general questions that can be answered in a Watsonian way, because commenters can pull up specific in-universe information.

We address general questions on a case-by-case basis, so if you feel a question is too general to answer in a Watsonian way, please report the question and the mod team will review it.

3) r/WhatIfFiction

We want questions and answers here to be based on in-universe information and reasonable deductions that can be made from them. Questions that are too open-ended to give meaningful Watsonian answers should go on our sister subreddit, r/WhatIfFiction, which accepts a broader range of hypothetical questions and answers. Examples of questions that should go on r/WhatIfFiction include:

  • "What if Tony Stark had been killed by the Ten Rings at the beginning of Iron Man? How would this change the MCU?" This question would be fun to speculate about, but the ripple effect from this one change would be too widespread to give a meaningful Watsonian answer, so this should go on r/WhatIfFiction.
  • "What would (X character) from the (X universe) think if he was transported to (Y universe)?" Speculating about what characters would think or do if they were isekai'd to another universe can be fun, but since such crossover questions often involve wildly different settings and in-universe rules, the answers would be purely speculative and not meaningfully Watsonian, so such questions belong on r/WhatIfFiction.

We should note, though, that some hypothetical questions or crossover questions can have meaningful Watsonian answers. For example, if someone asked, "Can a Star Wars lightsaber cut through Captain America's shield?", we can actually say "Quite possibly yes, because vibranium's canonical melting point is 5,475 degrees Fahrenheit, while lightsabers are sticks of plasma, and plasma's temperature is 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit or more." This answer is meaningfully Watsonian because it involves a deduction using specific and canonical in-universe information, and is not simply purely speculative.

4) Reporting rule-breaking posts and comments

The r/AskScienceFiction mod team always endeavors to keep the subreddit on-topic and remove rule-breaking content as soon as possible, but because we're all volunteers with day jobs, sometimes things will escape our notice. Therefore, it'd be a great help if you, our users, could report rule-breaking posts or comments when you see them. This will bring the issue to the mod team's attention and allow us to review it as soon as we can.

[Hellraiser: Revival] Can the Cenobites choose to ignore a summoning when a Configuration is solved?

Spoilers for events of the game: the game features a cult that worships the Cenobites and wants to ascend to Cenobite status, but the Cenobites are unimpressed by the cult's efforts and even voice their rejection of the cult's leader. Funnily enough, the cult has used the Genesis Configuration (a similar device to the Lament Configuration of the movies, but with extra abilities) several times to summon the Cenobites and one high-ranking member has survived multiple trips to the Labyrinth.

Considering how dismissive they were, could the Cenobites just ignore any further summons from people who annoyed them?

"A summoning at 6 pm? It's those annoying cultists again, let's not even bother showing up."

[Marvel] Doctor Doom has canonically trained in spiritual disciplines and martial arts under Tibetan Buddhist monks. How did he go about it successfully, considering a huge part of training under Tibetan Buddhist monks is destroying your ego, which doesn't really go well with Doom as a person?

[Foster's home for Imaginary Friends] all morals aside, can I just spawn infinite imaginary friends to use as food and never starve again?

• Upvotes

so in the show, goo proves that you can just...pop up an imaginary friend at any moment. and we see plenty of food-based friends all the time, one such imaginary friend being created for the explicit PURPOSE of being food.

with that said, if im willing to set all morals and ethics aside, can I ward off starvation indefinitely by just...creating a food imaginary friend whenever im hungry?

even more than that, can I just create an imaginary friend that can PRODUCE an endless supply of food, since some imaginary friends have been shown to have special powers and abilities?

[Warhammer fantasy] What the strongest a vampire has ever gotten by consuming other vampires?

• Upvotes

So far as I understand it, outside of Trueborn, vampires are heavily limited in their abilities by how far their linage is from Trueborn. But I've also read they through they can drink the blood of other vampires, either voluntarily or draining them, to get stronger.

Have there been low ranking vampires, like 4th or 5th generation, that haven't gotten significantly more powerful through this method? Does getting stronger mean they can provide additional blood kisses? Does any of these strength get passed on? Like a 5th generation vampire consumes enough vampires to the point where they're essentially a 4th generation? Could a new bloodline be founded this way by blood mixing?

What would happen if a Trueborn gave some of their blood? How dramatic is the power boost by generation? Like is it deeply impactful to a 2nd generation as much as 4th? Does it drive all but the strongest insane or something? Or does it not work? Anyone ever drain a Trueborn vampire?

[Rocky] What does Paulie see in Rocky?

I mean, to better clarify, I was observing their relationship over the first four movies as I sat down to watch the series a couple of months ago.

Like what I am saying is that I don’t know why Rocky goes out of his way to help him out since Paulie is a drunk fellow, and on top of that, some of his antics have driven Rocky into bankruptcy that I don’t understand why Rocky doesn’t ditch him.

[Konosuba] Is there a specific reason why the gods hate demons and undead or is this just them being jerks?

Many jokes in Konosuba, and some great moments in Isekai Quartet, come from Aqua hating demons and undead. We eventually see that she isn't unique in this regard among the gods, and some of them are even worse in this category than she is.

Do we ever get a reason why the gods hate demons and undead beyond them being assholes?

[Star Wars] Why were the KX droids on Ghorman so brutal compared to other droids?

• Upvotes

When the Imperials gave the order to release the KX droids to "suppress rioting" on Ghorman they seemed like completely unstoppable monsters, hails of blaster fire were totally useless and they waded through entire crowds killing everyone in their wake. Even Andor armed with a military grade blaster could do little to slow them except by ramming one with a space car.

K2S0 would demonstrate similar levels of tankiness against the ISB security teams on Coursacant and was quite resilient to stormtrooper blasters on Scariff but he was still brought down with reasonable amounts of fire. When Andor and Jyn stumbled into an stormtrooper squad he did not say "boring conversation anyway" and simply start bitchsmacking everyone in sight. K2S0 is a good force multiplier but far from invincible. Also comparing them to the B2 super battle droids explicitly built with military applications in mind, clone blasters demonstrated remarkably better impact. Their armor was tough enough that they didn't need to seek cover even without overwhelming numbers, but they were also still not able to simply fight a squad of clones on their own.

Possibly their armor is just the next generation and it's tougher, but considering how long Star War's history is it seems unlikely that armor could consistently make massive generation leaps. An old republic era cruiser is famously used during the battle of Scariff and 4000 year old durasteel plate was still quite comparable to ISD armor plating. Potentially overhauled but how much could modern people really do to refit a 1700s ship of the line for ramming into aircraft carriers? How could this first wave of KX droids be so effective? And if so why not deploy them in greater numbers? Palpatine might have inherited a galaxy traumatized by the droid armies but he has never been squeamish about schemeing to do whatever he wants until his popularity hits 0%

[X-Men] Why does Professor Xavier make a big deal out of Magneto killing people but doesn’t get upset when Wolverine does the same?

Wolverine is a chain smoking alcoholic with untreated PTSD that kills people on a regular basis. Xavier gives him free room and board and lets him hang around children.

Meanwhile, whenever Magneto kills people, no matter how justified it was, he acts like it’s a Greek tragedy.

What’s the deal with that?

[Destiny] How much does the light alter the Guardian's physiology?

As far as I know, the light doesn't change much besides the powers and the ability to be rezzed.

However, I remember it being said that Guardians don't get sick and don't scar. And I'm not sure if the memory wipe after being chosen has anything to do with it.

And there's also the case of the Hive's Light Brood. What changed with them?

[2012] In the move 2012, top gov't officials from around the world and the wealthy (think the Saudi Royal Family or techbro rich) all get on these arcs that are supposed to help humanity survive the apocalypse. Wouldn't having such a non-diverse grouping endanger our long term survival?

So, in the movie 2012 the super-wealthy and world's government officials all fund these arcs that supposedly would save humanity. Unfortunately, for the most part, there is very little diversity in the type of person who is accepted. (Some Chinese laborers and most of the main cast survive.) Wouldn't the fact that they didn't include "regular" people harm the species' survival? I know they mentioned that most of Africa may not have been harmed by the shifting of the world, so maybe that would make the result more diverse when they get to the land, but still.

Her death isn't strictly necessary for the sacrifice, so if she lives, do they just let her go, like they re-open the tunnel and let her drive home? Do they compensate her in any way or give her medical treatment? Longterm or psychiatric care?

[Star Wars] Did Anakin think both the Jedi and Sith were evil, and planned to end them both and start his own rule somehow?

I know Anakin turns to the dark side in hopes of saving Padme. But when confronted by Obi Wan, are his reasonings for hating the Jedi valid, or just lies he's telling himself to justify his fall to darkness?

Because if they are indeed valid, and I assume Vader eventually wanted to kill Palpatine as well, does this imply Vader wanted to start his own version of the Empire? Free or the Jedi and Sith altogether?

Just wondering if this was ever a train of thought that crossed Vader.

Was he legitimately trying to erradicate both sides?

[Dune] Do off-world workers get a life supply of spice?

Spice is said to be deadly addictive. Once addicted you have to keep taking it or you die.

Spice is all present on Arrakis,it can't be avoided. If you stay long enough you will naturally develope the Eyes of Ibad, the blue within blue eyes of a heavy spice addict.

Spice is also the most expensive substance in the Empire.

Given all this isn't a job on Arrakis basically a death sentence? You will get addicted to spice if you stay on the planned and you will die unless you keep taking it when off the desert planned. So do workers just accept they will die or is there some provision in their contract that they have a guaranteed spice allotment so they don't die from withdrawal? Or do they make enough to be able to afford spice for the rest of their life?
