Irish Culture Anyone else sick of junkies everywhere?

I’m a bit annoyed at the scourge of junkies and alco’s on the main streets of my local towns and city. They’re everywhere, and it’s getting worse.

Today I took my two kids to the cinema with their friends. Lovely time. As we are leaving the cinema, two middle aged women junkies, holding cans and stinking of weed, are sitting on the ground just outside the cinema door. Off their heads on worse than weed too.

I know many have sympathy for them, but I don’t really. And I think it’s wrong that they’re so highly visible. More so than other countries I’ve visited. Gardai should be moving them off main streets, shopping areas and busy areas.

Drugs are a scourge on this country. And before anyone says it, no, legalising drugs won’t help. The acceptance levels of drugs is sick. From politicians and police who won’t take drugs tests, to suspended sentences for dealers because they’re not big enough or there’s no jail space, to lads coked off their heads on nights out, to these middle aged women off their heads trying to talk to little girls outside cinemas.

Work What happens if you don’t want to strike but everyone you work with is?

Do you have to attend the strike, do you work, or do you just take a day off?

Edit: I don’t work in the public sector, I was thinking about in that situation what would happen.

Ancestry Ancestry DNA testing - how bad an idea is it?

I'd really like to submit my DNA to a genealogy-type website to get a better idea of my family background. I'm Irish on both sides as far back as I'm aware, but I'm curious about any traces of non-Irish heritage I might find. I'm also very curious about where descendants of any family who left over the years might have washed up

However, I'm aware of stories about loss of control of data, and also that I might then be exposing family members etc.

Can anyone confirm for me that this is a terrible idea that I should forget about before discovering I've been cloned and SpiceBags80 2.0 is slaving away in a lunar mine?

Edit: I love the smug, patronising tone of so many responses. I've already indicated i know the risks, but I'm still interested and curious to hear people's experiences. Spare me the "well ackshually, bioweapons" stuff

Housing Would you best best off remaining static and hoping for a social house?

We hear that most young people feel locked out of the housing market, even a modest apartment is beyond their reach, despite relatively good salaries in some quarters. What about those that aren't as fortunate career wise, do some of them not simply land on their feet with a new build house or apartment provided via social housing? Unless you are a high flier career wise, should you merely dial it down and join the housing waiting list?

Sport What do people think of Padel and the boom in Padel courts?

I started playing six years ago and absolutely love it. I've even represented the country at the world cup. I'm in the eco-chamber / cult so I'm keen to hear what the rest of you think.

Is it fun? A fad? Too expensive? A game more than a sport? A lesser version of tennis? Here to stay?

Random Best toilet roll?

It's no secret that toilet roll is one of the most expensive items on the shopping list. I'm looking for the best toilet/bog roll out there for the value. Not looking for cheap single-ply crap (Pun intended). 2-ply or more.

Might buy in bulk online if there's a deal to be had.

I am conducting my final year research project at independent college in Dublin on factors influencing the adoption of digital banking over traditional banking.

If you were born between 1981 and 1995 and currently live in Ireland, I would really appreciate your participation. It takes 3- 5 minutes, thank you.

Work Remote/WFH jobs?

Ladies and gents, I am looking for a genuine remote/wfh job. Normally I am the get up and go kind of person. Constantly on my feet, worked in pubs and warehouses but situation has changed and now I am looking purely for a WFH job. I have been on indeed/jobs.ie/linkedin, the lot. It seems utterly impossible to find a WFH, especially since a lot of job ads have remote in the title but they are far from it. Is there any company in ireland that offer a wfh role? I have loads of experience in sales/customer service. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Health & Medical If I’m admitted to a MH ward will I lose my job?

Currently doing vetting for a Garda CO job, I’ve no idea when I’ll start nor do I have a start date or even a location. My mental health has spiralled recently and I’m sat in the A&E atm. If I’m admitted to a MH hospital does this go on a record of mine if I ever do vetting or do I need to disclose this to employers?

Education Anyone know what route to take to get into art therapy?

Hello hello everyone!

I am just at a point in my life that I want to change things up, and I am thinking of combining two of my life long interests and with that I wanted to come here and see if anyone could help or offer some words of wisdom.

I've always loved art, I am a creative person at heart but I currently work in the tech sector, I also had an interest in therapy/counseling since my secondary school days.

With that in mind I wanted to see if anyone had any information in relation to art therapy in Ireland and if the route to this as a possible career option would be the study Psychology first and then go further in practice or are there routes to take that would be different here?

I've seen a few places in Dublin that have certificates for maybe something tangentially related, but I'd love to hear of any paths others may have taken in a similar way.

I grew up in a fairly rough area, with lots of people struggling and I'd love to give back in some way as I get older.

Go raibh maith agat, everyone 🙏

During rush hour yesterday (Tuesday) There was a white coach and some people-carrier vans being escorted by a rake of high-end Garda cars, along with motorbike escort, all with lights on, that went into the Phoenix park and then to Farmleigh.

Who was it for?

Postage & Shipping Shipping address confusion. Is the house number necessary? Sending a package to Ireland.

I'm sending a package to Ireland, and only now realised I forgot to add the house number. I'm going to attempt to call my postal service in the morning, but I'm stressed because I don't have a lot of time before the package leaves my country and I can't reach them for any problems concerning the package anymore. I also am not sure if they'll answer my call in time since the line is normally very busy, so I would like to feel reassured if I end up not being able to fix this, otherwise I'll also have to pay again which I can't afford to do.

I added what I guess I'll call the house code? Some type of postal code, in the postal code slot on the paper I had to fill out, and after a lot of research I am understanding that each code is tied to a specific house, and that many people don't even use the house numbers. I don't know how true this is, and I've seen old Reddit posts of people saying some postal services completely ignore postal codes, but more recent ones saying they DO use the postal code and that the house number is irrelevant.

Am I fucked for not adding the house number, or will the postal code direct them to the right house? I asked someone else I know who lives in Ireland and he said the house number is unnecessary, but this person is also very new to living there so I'd like to confirm with others too before I lose sleep stressing over this.

Thank you for any responses, hopefully my post makes sense.

Random Why has South Dublin been typically the more prosperous side?

I was just wondering was there a specific geographic or historic reason why the elites tended to favour South Dublin when the city was expanding during the period of colonisation.

I know that the Vikings settled on the south and that's where the castle was, but once the city moved beyond the city walls, why did South County Dublin become the general direction of settlement for the better off.

I know there were some attempts at making the north city more desirable with Mountjoy Square, Drumcondra, Clontarf, etc., but still the most prosperous areas have typically been on the southside.

Is there any specific reason for this or was it just momentum?

I'm not Irish by the way and am asking because I'm genuinely interested.

Shopping Cheapest way to get a mobile number/sim for a short time?

Hello,

This is not for any nefarious purposes, I promise! - Happy to reg with my details etc.

I just need to get a SIM Card with a mobile number that I can use for around 4-6 weeks kind of thing.

I don't mind paying a few bob for SIM and activation, and I understand I probably need to put more credit in after 30 days, or I lose the credit.. doesn't seem fair though.

Are there any alternatives to what I said above, which work out cheaper and allow me use the credit for a bit longer than 30 days?

Thanks
