ELECTION Alberta Referendum Megathread (pt. 2) - October 14, 5 days left
Good Afternoon
It seems like every two days or so is when these are going to be refreshed.
With the election coming up next Monday, October 19th, we have moved all discussion related to the referendum and Separation to this Megathread. News posts on the subject are allowed, but all discussion or opinion posts will be removed and redirected to this thread. Off topic discussion in other threads will also be redirected here.
There will be zero tolerance for Uncivil comments. Any flame wars, personal insults, or fights will be removed. Also, please remember that while public figures have opened themselves to higher scrutiny, comments or insults directly related to any elected official based on their gender, religion, or ethnicity will be treated as discriminatory and will be removed. Also, political affiliation or position is not a protected class.
Please remember that the report button is not a "Super Dislike." People are allowed to disagree with the majority opinion, and even allowed to post things that you may not agree with. If someone posts a view or an opinion you dislike, you can either choose not to engage, or downvote them. This does not apply to hateful or bigoted language, or obvious trolling. If you see those, please report them, but supporting the first nine questions, or supporting voting Option 2, are allowed on the sub.
There will be zero tolerance for any misinformation about voting, or any attempts to encourage people not to vote. This is 100% Any post or comment saying they are not going to vote, encouraging other people not to vote, or notably downplaying the importance of the vote will be assumed to be in bad faith, and will be removed, and the account banned at least until after the vote.

r/Alberta Announcement Welcome to r/Alberta February 16 Update
Welcome to r/Alberta February 16 Update
Hello everyone, and welcome to r/Alberta. We’re glad so many people are here to share in conversations about our province. As always, we want to remind everyone what this subreddit is about and what it isn’t.
Consider this supplementary to the subreddit's ruleset, as we will action content based on the clarifications below.
What we welcome here:
- Respectful conversation about Alberta and Albertans.
- News, events, and stories connected directly to Alberta (vague connections or something not about Alberta said by an Albertan risks removal.
- Support for Albertan workers, educators, and communities.
- Substantive political opinions when tied directly to Alberta issues.
- Quality original content about life in Alberta.
What we do not welcome here:
- Incivility, trolling, or name-calling, even if you think the recipient deserves it.
- Off-topic U.S. or federal/Canada-wide politics.
- Separation rants or duplicates. Separation is a valid topic in Alberta politics, but low-effort rants, name-calling, or repeat posts will be removed. At this point, almost any post that isn't a news article would be considered a repeat.
- Meta posts about the subreddit, other subreddits, and moderator actions. If you have questions about rules or removed content, send us a modmail message to discuss; it is not appropriate to make call-out threads in this subreddit or others. If you have an issue with another subreddit, you need to take it up with them. If you have a problem with ours, modmail us.
- Low-effort content: memes, screenshots from Twitter/X/Facebook, or generic rants.
- Discrimination of any kind (racism, misogyny, hate speech, etc.).
A note on politics & current events:
The Alberta separatist movement receives a great amount of attention from folks across Canada and the U.S., as well as from non-genuine actors such as trolls and paid manipulators. There are many people on the global stage who would like to see Alberta separate and the chaos it would cause in Canada. We do not intend for r/Alberta to be a place for those bad actors to be platformed and able to further their cause.
- Regarding duplicate and non-substantive content. Repetitive posts and leading or rhetorical questions will be removed. We receive 5-10 of these kinds of posts a day and have been for nearly a year, we will not host them because they bring nothing new to the discussion and are typically low-effort karma-farming attempts by people from outside Alberta. For now, consider that a post that is not a news article would be removed. Posts and comments that are removed are not guaranteed to receive a removal reason due to high volume, review our rules before messaging us to ask why something was removed.
- We have adjusted our back-end systems to ensure genuine users can still participate while hardening these systems from being gamed. Still, please report users who break the rules or whom you suspect are non-genuine actors. Do not feed the trolls or you may end up being actioned by a moderator too.
- We have introduced a new "Separatism" flair that will be automatically applied to posts on the topic. All posts on this topic must be manually approved. If you are not an active user in r/Alberta your post will not be approved, there are no exceptions and we will not respond to appeals. In addition, "locals only" comment rules still apply - non-regular users of our subreddit will not be able to make comments on posts on the topic of separatism. The specific boundaries of these rules will *not* be published to prevent abuse, but rest assured that genuine users of r/Alberta will have no issue surpassing the requirements.
- Your own personal (and intense) opinions on the matter of separatism do not supersede r/Alberta or reddit’s sitewide rules. We remind users that Reddit admins have stepped up their automated removals and to be careful on things even alluding to violence or the site administration may suspend you.
- Don't report posts you just disagree with. Being wrong on the internet isn't against the rules, and we are more likely to ban you over report button abuse than we are to take moderator actions to help you win an argument.
We welcome healthy debate, but keep it civil and Alberta-focused. Slurs, personal insults, and bad-faith trolling will be removed even if you think the recipient is deserving. Repeat offenders risk a ban.
This is a space to share common interests, support one another, and talk about Alberta without the toxicity that ruins so many online communities. The best way to fight people who seek to drive you apart and burn you out is to not buy into it. Be positive, post non-political content, focus more on the good things happening, and share some pictures of our beautiful province.
Thanks for helping keep r/Alberta constructive and welcoming.
Signed,
Your r/Alberta Moderation Team

Discussion Consumer Alert: Edmonton Watercolour Group (Orble)
Hi everyone, I wanted to put out a warning to the local Edmonton art community about a company operating under the name Edmonton Watercolour Group (run by a parent platform called Orble).
They aggressively advertise two hour beginner workshops on Facebook and Instagram. I signed up for an event, but when I drove all the way to the venue, the doors were locked and the class was a total ghost town. They cancelled the event completely without sending a single email or cancellation notice.
While I managed to claw back a refund for the ticket price after fighting for it, they completely refuse to compensate me for the expensive specialized art supplies I was forced to buy for the class, or the travel time and gas money spent driving out there. One participant paid for an Uber ride there and back, and told us she'd had THREE other classes cancel (and convert to credit, she didn't even get a refund!)
Looking into it online, this is an automated, faceless operation based out of Australia that sets up hundreds of fake "local" city landing pages, hires random temporary instructors, and leaves students stranded when things go wrong. They don't even have a Google Business Profile where you can leave a public review.
Save your time and money, stick to real, verified local Edmonton art clubs and studios instead!

ELECTION Notes from an Election Officer - Advanced Voting Day 1
Disclaimer: This is not official Elections Alberta communication. These are my own observations and thoughts as a non-partisan election officer who wants to see maximum voter turnout and a smooth election process for all involved. No AI was used in the process of writing this post.
Main takeaways from day one of advanced voting:
- Please, please, please vote early. On advanced voting days, we have access to computers and scanners that can help the registration of voters and the search on the system to be quick and easy. We can also register voters on the computer very quickly.
However, on election day we do not have access to the computer computers or scanners. Registering voters will be a long and manual process. We will have to find voters in a book of electors and strike you out manually one by one. Registration on election day will be more challenging.
That means, despite the long lineups in the morning of the first day of advance voting, the voting process is still relatively smooth and quick. I can already foresee that that will not be the case on election day given that we are shortstaffed, overworked, and without access to computers.
- Please make sure you find the right place to vote designated to you based on your address of residence, whether it’s advanced voting day or election day.
You can find the right place to vote on advanced voting days and election day here: https://map.elections.ab.ca/
Please look up your address and find the right place to vote. It is very discouraging for voters as well as us election officers to turn away folks who have been waiting in line and who have made the effort and time to come out to vote, but find that this is the wrong location.
- Please be patient. Please be patient with the entire process. Most election officers at the voting station are also trying to navigate a tricky system and a time consuming process of preparing ballots with very little assistance or guidance.
Please be patient while you’re in line. We really appreciate it. Please be patient while we prepare your ballots. We have to fold all 10 individually and prepare your bundles. We are shortstaffed and thus overwork. A lot of of the officers today did not take breaks of more than 10 or 15 minutes the entire day. We often arrive one hour before polling starts and we leave one hour after the voting station closes. We only get paid for 11 hours at a day rate, not an hourly rate. We are volunteering two hours or more of our time.
- If you’re still interested in working for the elections in any capacity, there are still positions open and I’m sure the returning offices would be glad to find a spot for you in the electoral process. If you’re at a polling station and would like to work with Elections Alberta in any capacity, feel free to ask around and speak with a returning officer. Tell them what you’re interested in and what your talents are and they will try to connect you with the right individuals and find you a role.
Feel free to ask any questions. I will try my best to answer them in the comments when I have the time.
I will try to make this a regular series so I can provide updates so that you can all be better informed and so that we can have a smooth election process with a maximum voter turnout.

Question How do I vote with a PO Box Number?
I live in rural Alberta. I went to go vote at a community hall near our farm and was turned away as I did not have adequate ID. I did have my drivers license as well as mail from my bank and the CRA. The problem is that all my ID, my insurance, my registration, my bank statements and anything else that is registered to me personally uses my PO Box when they send me mail. We are unable to receive mail at our land location, because once again, it is rural.
Any kind of documentation that has our actual land location on it has the farm corporation as ownership and not my name personally.
You must be able to confirm your residential address to vote.
How am I supposed to vote if I cannot receive mail to this address and my identification has my PO Box number on it?
EDITING TO UPDATE: Huge thank you to those who suggested calling Elections Alberta. They they were extremely helpful and there were no wait times.
They were able to direct me towards an attestation form on the website. This form can be helpful for people who are living in conditions, such as a colony, and apparently it’s quite common for those on family farms.
In the past, I was able to use my TD app to confirm my living location, but for whatever reason, the officer at the voting station would not accept it. It is my understanding, however, from another helpful comment that that should be an acceptable form.
Thank you everyone for your helpful comments. I will be leaving this post up in case someone else is struggling with the same kind of issue. Attestation forms can also be used for individuals living in long-term care, facilities, shelters, and anything of that nature.

Answered Wrong address - where to vote
For some reason my voter card was sent to my parents address, I haven’t had their address on my ID or on anything in years but for some reason it was sent there. Therefore my voting location is near their address which is halfway across the city for me, and would prefer to vote near my current address.
There is nothing online about wrong addresses and it basically says you have to vote in your designated electoral division.
Is anyone in a similar boat and were you able to vote elsewhere with proof of address? And/or is there more info on this?
