Retold A custom Map i've been working on
Prostagma everyone,
so in my free time ive been working on a little project. It started as a fun way to experiment building a city inspired by Minas Tirith from LotR but slowly turned into a quite big Map with different Factions.
Now theres 4 Nations so far π One Dwarfish inspired nation, where i tried to recreate the cave like envoirenment from the Main Campaign (and failed imo π ), one Smithing Nation on top of a Volcano trying to harvest the heat but fighting for survival at the same time and a Seefarer nation heavily inspired by Atlantis.
I usually dont share my Projects (or finish them) but for this one i thought maybe some of you might like it, even tho its still a WiP.
I hope you enjoy it! Happy to get some advice on how to improve. And excuse my bad grammar, as english is not my first language.

So... Minas Tirith, Mordor, Moria and Numenor? Neat
Serious, great maps!
6
u/Cemoli117 Mar 05 '26
Oh you're right! Guess i unknowingly took alot of inspiration from LotR π not just Minas Tirith.
Its a single map btw, not multiple. I did think of maybe releasing it in the workshop once its finished. I doubt its usable as a skirmish, but maybe as a single player szenario?

EstΓ‘ sΓΊper chulo todo. Tengo ganas de jugarlo.

u/Cemoli117 Mar 05 '26
Awesome man thank you for the huge compliment! Once its finished i think i will share it on the workshop π

Mam i've been waiting for so long for someone to Mod LOTR maps into this game. I'd love to see a custom map where one player has to defend Elms Deep for 30mins and the other player has to try and breach it.

u/VarioussiteTARDISES Mar 05 '26
There were several scenarios like that in the Titans days, though I don't think anyone's tried to recreate them in Retold yet.
6
u/sephirothbahamut Mar 05 '26
In case you have an old version of the game (Original The Titans or Extended Edition)
Age of Mythology Heaven :: Battle for Helm's Deep
Just because a new game is out doesn't mean all the old internet content disappeared ;) Heavengames is full to the brim of cool scenarios.
Actually I don't know if they can be imported in Retold somehow
2
2
u/VarioussiteTARDISES Mar 06 '26
I don't think they can be imported... but it'd be better to remake them anyway, because the Retold editor is powerful in terms of what it allows, so not only would a remake look better, it'd allow, without modding, a lot more to be done as is.
2
u/sephirothbahamut Mar 06 '26
As far as i've seen the editor didn't change much at all. The vast majority of old scenarios didn't require mods either.
Setting aside assets for the new civ, most of the assets are 1:1 with just updated graphics, there aren't many things that are unique to retold
2
u/VarioussiteTARDISES Mar 06 '26
That's because you really need to dig into the new trigger effects to see where things are truly different.
2
u/Cemoli117 Mar 05 '26
That would be sick! Im sure someone better at crearing maps than me could make cities much closer to LotR so you get close enough to feel like youre defending a proper city.
Im sure it would be so much fun to spam hoplites and toxotes and watch them fight against myth units like Minotaurs and zyclopses like humans defending against the armies of sauron

Hey this is very cool! I liked the seafearers the most
Have you tried using the mirror towers for minas tirith? Also, for the dwarven one to make it look more like the campaign try raising the terrain around it up to the height of the rocks and painting it in black (the one that blocks construction on it). Then at the other side make them look like normal mountains. I'd also sprinkle some variation in the terrain colour, like a slightly darker shade in some areas.Β

I did enjoy creating the seadarers alot! I was trying to let the player feel that it was once a mighty nation, but had a tragic flooding which stripped big parts of the main island away leaving only ruins. On the left side if you look closely near the temples i placed tents for the refugees fleeing from the water with crates of food and fish scattered around. I do have struggle with getting the AI to use the fishing boats properly tho during testing.
Ill definitely look into your suggestion for the dwarfen caves, thank you! The tower in the middle was more of a trial (and error) of a huge stalagmite connecting the floor of the cave with the roof (? Do caves have roofs?). I tried making it feel like a completely different area on the same map

u/Cemoli117 Mar 05 '26
Its basically you in the big city + the 3 nations as your AI allies against 3 AI opponents. You can watch your sllies fight and fall eventually, or help defend them to drag the game out as long as possible. But the legendary AI is pretty hefty. I just had a few test matches and it was quite insane lol

u/blaster915 Mar 05 '26
That's awesome for turtle players like myself xD
2
u/Cemoli117 Mar 05 '26
I do enjoy turtling too lmao probably why i love Minas Tirith π you can definitely do alot of heavy defending on this map if you put the AI on Legendary difficulty

u/Cloud_Retainer_2424 Mar 05 '26
Why don't you make the Mordor place atlantean? You could use Chronos wonder as Sauron's tower
1
u/Cemoli117 Mar 06 '26
Honestly because the only direct inspiration from LotR i took was for Minas Tirith. The rest i just played around and slowly but surely they happened to look like this. Only now that so many pointed it out i realize that i may not have been only lightly influenced by LotR π

This is one of the best middle earths Iβve ever seen in a map editor. Fantastic job!

u/Romo1794 Mar 06 '26
This reminds me of the custom maps on Warcraft III! How would you play a map like this on AoM?
1
u/Cemoli117 Mar 06 '26
Well you can technically play however you like. I aim for it to be a Defensive type of szenario. But i also played on the invading side and it was alot of fun bringing all those Gates and walls dowm π
Still needs some work but im honestly enjoying it

Looks like castle wars

Yes lol i think its obvious i like big cities π

u/anomie89 Mar 05 '26
TBH aom has a criminal lack of custom campaigns and scenarios given the beautiful and deep editor. there are so many stories to tell through aom
3
u/sephirothbahamut Mar 05 '26
Problem is the vast majority of people who had tons of ideas for custom campaigns and scenarios and the creativity to do it, did it back in the day, when besides ideas we also had plenty of free time to create them. (note that "Extended Edition" downloads also include all content created before Extended Edition came out, since everything from vanilla and The Titans was compatible)
Age of Mythology Heaven :: AoM: Extended Edition: Campaigns
Now we're older/adults with less free time

u/Cemoli117 Mar 05 '26
100% agree. There are some pretty awesome maps out there definitely. But like i said in another comment i did have so many stories going on in my head as a child while building maps. So if i have the time i might create a few and release them on the workshop
2
u/XConfused-MammalX Mar 05 '26
Very cool, would love to see a 1v1 of two players with the fortress from the first Pic. Would make for some very interesting back and forth sieges.
2
u/Cemoli117 Mar 05 '26
Oh i like that idea alot! Is there a way to mirror the whole city and put it on the opposite corner? The map could me much smaller with ressources in the middle both have to fight for.
Could even work in a 4 player ffa with one in each corner i think
3
u/XConfused-MammalX Mar 05 '26
2 to 4 player ffa with those fortresses would be sick. No idea how the map editor mechanics work though, never tried it myself.
If you do try it one reccomendation I would make would be to tone down the amount of resources in the lower tier of the city, and place a small amount in the second tier, that way a player could "abandon" the lower level while also having a fall back point to regroup at while not starving themselves dry, could make for some desperate but realistic last stands.
2
u/Cemoli117 Mar 05 '26
Yes definitely, the current map is more of a custom szenario map than a skirmish map so it definitely would need some tweaks to balance it out. But will definitely look into it once this map is complete
2
u/EmhyrvarSpice Odin Mar 05 '26
Ah man this gave me flashbacks to me messing around with the editor as a kid.
I sued to build little cities, spawn a bunch of units and then watch them duke it out.
2
u/Duffmanvg7575 Mar 05 '26
Why?
5
u/sephirothbahamut Mar 05 '26
Because making cool maps is fun?
2
u/Duffmanvg7575 Mar 05 '26
It was funnier in my head to just point blank ask why like a 4 year old.

Thats what came to my mind when you asked "why" π
2
u/LordSnack9999 Mar 05 '26
Looks awesome! Definitely keep at it! Canβt wait to give it a spin :)
1
u/Cemoli117 Mar 06 '26
Yes! Im excited for gameplay feedback. But it might take me a while to finish, since im working alot and can only progress on my free time

u/TheGreatTeddy Mar 05 '26
Iβd kill for an old school/β04 WRP game on this map :β)
2
u/Cemoli117 Mar 06 '26
Actually i did create one (well technically many, but some files were corrupted) maps like this on the old EE and even the original game.
But i think it had too many objects because the game would crash or freeze shortly after starting lol
I didnt have this problem in retold yet π

u/yaysalmonella Mar 05 '26
Very cool. How do you get the upgraded buildings to appear in editor?
2
u/Cemoli117 Mar 06 '26
Go to the tab "szenario" then to "player data" where you can customize the Main gods and colours of the players. There should be a button to see the civilization stage, pick mythic age (or any other) and you're done.
Im not 100% sure but this was the last thing i changed before i did a short test game and took the screenshots. Also im playing on a german version so i dont know the exact names of the tabs.

I know youβre aiming for Minas Tirith, but it looks like Edoras from the Battle for Middle Earth 1 game. Mostly coz itβs tucked into a corner.

I knew it was LOTR!
Helmβs Deep next!
2
u/Cemoli117 Mar 06 '26
Dfinitely love helm's deep! Could be challenging to bring it to live in AoM tho, but ill give it a shot once im done with my current project
2
u/CoreyFromXboxOne Mar 06 '26
Nice man. Do you know any other good custom maps? Would love to see what the community has designed
2
u/Cemoli117 Mar 06 '26
I think there are many custom maps on the workshop.
Back during the OG AoM i think there were also websites where people shared their custom maps as well so you could download and place it in the games maps folder.
I think there is also the possibility of getting extra content via nexus mods if you dont want to use the in game workshop
