Question Official Archetypes that break character creation rules

I'm looking through the various official Order and Death Archetypes, and I can't help but notice that many of them break the Archetype creation rules given in the core rulebook. In the core book in and in Champions of Order, several Archetype Equipment lists follow seemingly arbitrary Aqua Ghyranis budgets that inexplicably add up to more or less than the normal 200D, and in Champions of Death, many Archetypes display lists of possible Talents that exceed in number what should be the maximum of [the number indicated in "Choose X"] + 3 (to give one exemple among several, the Abhorrent Ghoul Archetype indicated "Choose 1" in its Talents section, and so the total number of Talent options should be 4, but instead of that, 8 Talents are listed).

What's the deal with all that?

Question Several questions on Weapons, Armour and Requirements

Rules as written, wearing Heavy Armour requires a Body Attribute of at least 4, and Two-handed weapons can't normally be wielded with a Shield unless with specific Talents like Gargant's Grip or Additional Arms. However, across the rulebooks and supplements, I see several official Archetypes that seem to break these rules, such as starting with Heavy Armour despite only have a Body Attribute of 3, or with both a Two-handed weapon AND a Shield, without any explicit mention of specific Talents, other effects, or special exemption rules that would allow them to. What's the deal with that?

Another related question is what Weapon Traits to use to represent a glaive. The Soulbound core rulebook's doesn't give glaives their own unique Trait list, but going by the creatures in the Bestiary section depicted as wielding glaives, it seems to consistently treat them as 2+S weapons whith the Slashing and Two-handed Traits, like a Greataxe (which makes sense to me, since IRL glaives are primarily slashing weapons). But Era of the Beast lists the Heartshard Glaive as a starting weapon option for the Melusai Archetype, and explictly labels it as a Halberd, which in the core rulebook are listed as 1+S weapons with the Piercing, Rend, and Two-handed Traits (despite the fact that the artwork for the Melusai Archetype in Era of the Beast visually depicts the Heartshard Glaive as being much more blade-like than spear-like...).

The two questions are related in that I'm currently writing up a homebrew Sylvaneth Archetype based on the Arch-Revenant, which in official artwork and in its tabletop wargame miniature, is consistently depicted as wielding both a glaive and a shield at the same time, and the official lore and flavor texts consistently describes the Arch-Revenant's Glaive as being a slashing weapon. Should I treat glaives as Greataxes or Halberds in Soulbound rules? And is there really a way within Soulbound rules as written to allow the wielding of a Two-handed weapon AND a shield at the same time at char creation without specific Talents, or are the officials rules just straight up contradicting themselves?

Mountain Stance

So I have been running this game for about six months now, and have had a Stoneguard player in the game for pretty much the whole time. After months of us trying to figure out what Mountain Stance does that makes it core talent worthy, I have kind of given up and am turning to you all. Are we missing something? Is the inability to be knocked prone actually secretly really good and I need to run around knocking down other players more?

Are we just over-estimating core talents as a whole given how incredible some of them are?

Question Quarterstaff Variations

Hi everyone!

I'm a greenbeard GM for Soulbound and I cannot find where are the descriptions/traits of all the variations of "quarterstaff" that the different spellcasters use.

Seraphon get theirs (Serpent Staff) in the Stars&Scales book, but I cannot find the rest mentioned in the Corebook or the Champions of Order...(Witchstaff, Staff of the High Peaks, Wizard's Staff)

Thank you in advance!

Homebrew Raven Priest Archetype & Miracles of Morrda?

I was thinking of making a homebrew Archetype for the Raven Priests of Lethis, and for that I also need to come up with homebrew Miracles of Morrda. Is there any already-existing homebrew of those? Any ideas to recommend for the Miracles?

Question Why is it still up for preorder?

Post image
40 Upvotes

Was looking into the champions of chaos book and for some reason it’s still up for preorder on cubicle 7’s site. The release date still says Q1 of this year but we are way past that. Other sites seem to have copies available and am wondering why it’s like this on the main site. Is it a reprint? I might be wrong but I believe I heard there were some grammatical and editing errors at launch so is this a fixed version? Or did they just never bother updating it?

Question What adventure would you run for an action packed intense one shot?

Topic.

I'm gonna be doing a one shot in a couple weeks. Haven't played or ran the game in over two years, but I and my party all remember how to play.

Any level of adventure is fine, I just want to get opinions in which is the most....exciting and memorable I guess?

Just started the "Ruins of the Past" campaign

The party needs to find a solution to all the raids happening in the Caravanserai Trade Route. They found a caravan that was recently raided and by closer inspection they got "jumped" by some aethersea creatures laying in ambush. They dealt with the creatures but one managed to get away. (Spoilers from here on) They were able to track it to The Kraken-Eater's Castle where they found a sleeping Gargant and a mysterious melody that they shook off. They entered the castle through the main building, there they got stopped before entering the next room by a friendly seeming Arachnarok spider. When they made it clear that they wanted to get rid of the Gargant she let them through. They got to a giant feasting hall where a bunch of people seemed to be in the middle of an eating contest. The leader challenged the party to an eating contest with him but when they took a closer look at the food they saw that it contained mostly human remains or unknown exotic meats. They managed to convince the leader to a game of musical prowess, where he most definitely lost.

Really enjoying the campaign so far. And cant wait to show what's else is waiting for them.

How do you manage Soulfire if the binding separates temporarily

If the party splits temporarily, say to split into 2 groups to search down different routes of a cave system or split up individually to find someone in a city, how do you handle the use of soulfire? Can the players agree across the table or do they need to be together in game? If they can use it with agreement across the table whilst split, is the maximum Soulfire available to use or is the maximum Soulfire split between groups/individuals?

How do you handle coins, wages, and everyday money in the Mortal Realms?

My group has been struggling a little with the monetary system in Age of Sigmar: Soulbound. In their words, the setting dosen't lacks a “proper” currency for ordinary people.

Using magical water with healing properties to pay for everything from beer and meals to wages, weapons, and coach rides is starting to break their immersion.

I have been reading about the different currencies mentioned in the lore, particularly the Lexicanum pages on Currencies of the Mortal Realms and Glimmerings, but I would really like to hear how other groups handle this at the table.

We have tried answering some fairly ordinary questions:
- What would an average soldier or carpenter earn?
- How many pints of beer could they buy with that wage? (Yes, we think alot about beer when it's damn hot during the summer!)
- What does an ordinary person use to pay for food or rent?
- Do people really carry drops of Aqua Ghyranis around for every small purchase? Just sloshing around in the pant pockets?!

One idea we discussed was keeping the published prices but presenting them using the familiar WFRP4 coin system:

1 gold crown = 20 silver shillings = 240 brass pennies

If we simply treated one published Aqua Drop as one brass penny, some example prices would become:
- Meal: 15 Drops = 15d = 1s 3d
- Sword: 150 Drops = 150d = 12s 6d
- Coach: 1,200 Drops = 1,200d = 5 GC
- Sailing ship: 90,000 Drops = 90,000d = 375 GC

That gives the prices a more familiar feel, but it creates another problem. If we then say that one Phial is worth 1s and one Sphere is worth 5 GC, the values no longer match the normal relationship between Drops, Phials, and Spheres.

Another possibility would be to use local coins for everyday purchases while treating Aqua Ghyranis as a valuable trade commodity or something merchants, governments, and adventurers might exchange in larger deals rather than something everyone uses to buy a pint.

Then there are all the other valuable substances and currencies mentioned in the lore: Glimmerings, realmstone, Grave Coins, aether-gold, and so on. Should these have fixed values, or are they more like gems in D&D, where their value depends on quality, size, location, and whether you can find an interested buyer?

I would be very interested to hear how other groups approach this:

  • Do you use Aqua Ghyranis literally, or treat it as an abstract measure of wealth?
  • Have you created wages and living costs for ordinary people?
  • Do your Cities of Sigmar mint their own coins?
  • Do different cultures such as the Kharadron, Seraphon, or Soulblight use entirely different currencies?
  • Has anyone successfully adapted the WFRP4 equipment and coin system to Soulbound?
  • How do you value things like Glimmerings and realmstone without turning them into another universal currency?

I am not necessarily looking for one currency that works everywhere. I am mainly looking for a system that makes everyday prices and wages feel believable while preserving the character of the setting.

Language house rules: I’ve put together some language house rules for Age of Sigmar: Soulbound and thought I’d share them. The aim is to give languages a little more weight in character creation and roleplay. Starting languages are based on your character’s upbringing, Mind, and relevant Skill Training; with rules for communication and learning new languages during play.

AoS:Soulbound Language House Rules

Hi everyone! I’ve put together some language house rules for Age of Sigmar: Soulbound and thought I’d share them.

The aim is to give languages a little more weight in character creation and roleplay. Starting languages come from your character’s upbringing, Mind, and relevant Skill Training, with rules for communication and learning new languages during play.

Our homebrew document mostly focused on the game mechanics for acquiring languages during character creation, so if you want to have more languages to choose from then I can really recommend sageking14's Lexicanum’s for Languages of the Mortal Realms database. It's a much better and comprehensive resource; covering language families, individual languages, dialects, scripts, and other forms of communication found throughout the setting. It even includes examples of alphabets and runes.

When I was looking for art of other Sylvaneth Kurnoth Hunters I hardly found any, so I thought I'd share the one I did for my character, Wist. I really wanna design more too, maybe I'll use them as her past connections and friends.

Does melee increase for one attack when you double training from mettle?

Since training dice are doubled and they count towards calculating melee, does melee also change the D:N or only the roll for damage?

What sources do fellow GMs and Players use for artwork to use during sessions?

I like to show artwork to my players during our sessions as I think it really helps set the tone of the game. None of them are familiar with AOS and the lore apart from what we do in our sessions. I always try to show artwork of the enemies they face and they love it when a big encounter starts and I pop up some images on the big screen. They've all come over from DnD and the one thing they all comment on is how good the setting is and would like to see some more artwork to help them visualise things better in their minds. There's quite a bit available from Cubicle 7 and games workshop but I was just wondering if anyone uses or knows of any other sources. I would love to display more landscape and city artwork during the game and maybe create a rolling gallery to display during downtime and natural pauses in the game. I'm more than happy to support artists as well and not just source free stuff. I know AI can be used but I want to try and avoid it and use original material.

Question What does "unaware" means in backstab?

Talent "Backstab" reads as follows:

You know how to strike swiftly and quietly. If you make an Attack with a Subtle weapon and the target is unaware of you, the attack deals double Damage and ignores Armour.

Does is mean that it can be done pretty much only once per combat (Because every time you try it next, enemies know you exist, but don't know where you are) or can it be done every time I'm hidden again?
