3DS Hacking Q&A General | Still here
New users, please read the entire post before asking your question, including the FAQ. You may find your question is already answered here.
Ask questions in the comments of this thread
Do you just want to hack your 3DS?
Start here: https://3ds.hacks.guide/
Things you really ought to stop asking already
You CAN install CFW on latest firmware (11.17.0-X) with mset9 on all models.
- You can install CFW on all consumer models on all versions with the methods in the guide.
- System transfers work fine for systems with CFW. See this wiki page: https://wiki.hacks.guide/wiki/3DS:System_Transfer
- Updating firmware/apps is safe if you have Luma 10.2.1+. You will not lose your CFW. Just accept the update.
- For upgrading your SD card to a larger size, refer to the this wiki page: to format the new SD card, then transfer the contents.
- Lost your SD card, or wiped it, and need to set it up fresh on a hacked console? https://3ds.hacks.guide/restoring-updating-cfw.html will get you going again.
- Files from 3ds.hacks.guide with a magnet icon require the usage of a torrent client to download them.
- You should install CFW with your main SD card, not its own SD card. You will not lose anything so long as you follow instructions. The mods are on the console itself, not the SD card, so you won't have an unmodded SD card to switch the system to not have CFW.
- Please see the updating to boot9strap page on the guide if you already have arm9loaderhax (indicated by Luma version 7.0.5 or lower on the Luma configuration screen) and are looking to update to boot9strap.
- If you want more homebrew apps look at Universal DB.
- If you want to know what CFW can legally do, the guide gives some examples and more examples are here.
- Uninstalling CFW, DON'T without specific direction from a knowledgeable helper. You just risk breaking things worse than your system already is. It won't give you any benefit. If it is to sell it, you don't want the buyer to not know it had CFW on it in the past, as that can complicate things in the future.
- Can X game be ported to 3DS?
- If you want save files, check 3DS Save Bank or search for a save editor. If you can't find them there, they likely don't exist and you need to submit a save or program a save editor.
- Install your own cartridges with Godmode9 instead of dumping to CIA, for a faster install and less free SD space required.
- If you can do something on stock firmware, you can do it on CFW.
Note: About three days after the post is unstickied it'll become locked to prevent users from asking questions where they likely won't find answers
Questions go below. Please ask your question in the comments.

Homebrew release Zombie Outbreak Simulator for the Nintendo 3DS (ZOS-3DS) is here!
Introducing ZOS-3DS! ZOS is short for Zombie Outbreak Simulator, and is the official acronym for the game coined by its original developers, Binary Space. Binary Space many years ago developed a game called Zombie Outbreak Simulator, a mobile game for both Android and iOS. The game is barely maintained (if it even is at all, the developers haven't updated their website since at least 2024 with news), the game got so old and broken on Android that Google forcibly delisted it. The iOS version on the other hand is still alive and well. The game is free to play however does have in-app purchases or you can watch ads to get extra features (ads make it temporary, purchases make it permanent), or you can buy the "pro" version on iOS to get it all without IAPs. The Android version never had a pro variant and was only free to play with IAPs. ZOS-3DS is based on the newest (and last) Android version released, and removes IAPs, ads and any other unrelated Android thing such as sharing.
With this all being said, let's get down to the AI disclosure. Yes, Claude was used to help make this decompilation possible. Specifically, I gave it the APK and it decompiled the game in full, converted it over to 3DS in C++ and I did debugging along with Claude using Azahar, and I did live hardware testing by myself on my New Nintendo 3DS XL. I also did minor Old 3DS testing by tweaking Azahar's settings however otherwise it does not have Old 3DS testing.
Source code and compiled CIA are available on the GBAtemp thread page!

Homebrew release [WIP] I started a native port of Super Mario 64 DS to the 3DS — full-width top screen, stereoscopic 3D, C-Stick camera, CIA (bring your own ROM)
Hi everyone! For the past few weeks I've been working on a native port of Super Mario 64 DS (EU) to the Nintendo 3DS. It's not an emulator: the game code runs natively on the 3DS CPU, built on the amazing sm64ds-decomp decompilation, and the DS 2D/3D hardware is reimplemented on top of the 3DS GPU (citro3d).
What works today (tested on my New 3DS)
- Menus, intro, castle, courses, bosses — the game is playable from start to finish
- All 36 Rec Room mini-games
- Full-width blue sky on the top screen (game image kept at 4:3, no stretching)
- DS shadows, lighting, toon shading reproduced on the 3DS GPU
- Installable CIA with a HOME Menu banner (generated from *your* ROM at build time)
3DS-only extras (optional, OPTIONS screen with SELECT+START)
- Stereoscopic 3D in the title menu (the star flies in front of / behind the logo) and in-game
- New 3DS C-Stick camera ("DS arrows" mode or a smooth free camera)
- Analog Circle Pad: slight tilt = walk, full tilt = run (DS digital mode still available)
- HD title logo, texture filtering
Status / honest limits
- Work in progress: ~30 fps in game on New 3DS with some slowdowns, menu 40–60 fps — performance is what I'm working on now
- Old 3DS not tested on hardware yet
- Stereo 3D / C-Stick / OPTIONS have mostly been tested in Azahar so far
Legal
No Nintendo code or assets are included. You need your own dump of Super Mario 64 DS (Europe); the build script extracts everything locally. Please don't ask for ROMs.
Source / build
https://github.com/SebastienBreton/sm64ds-3ds
git clone --recursive, put your dump as baserom.eu.nds, run ./build.sh (and ./build.sh cia for the CIA).
Contributions are very welcome — fork + PR. Bug reports with the log sdmc:/sm64ds/user-test.log help a lot. Huge thanks to the sm64ds-decomp contributors, the devkitPro/citro3d folks, and the Azahar and melonDS teams.

Tool news [Release] Dragon Quest XI 3DS (Japanese) – English fan patch, beta v0.1.2 (.cia / .3ds, 2D + 3D mode)
UPDATE (v0.1.8): the latest build is on the project's GitHub page (link at the bottom).
What's new since 0.1.5:
- Fixed a crash in the shop when selling items (it affected both emulators and real 3DS hardware)
- Fixed a graphics corruption in Heliodor on Azahar/Citra
- Item screens: the item command window and the bottom-screen descriptions fit better, and descriptions no longer break in the middle of a word
- Camp and inn choices no longer overlap
- Battle results and item pickups now read like the Switch version
If you installed an older version, please uninstall it first and use the latest release. Known issues and fixes are listed on the GitHub page.
----------
I've been working on an unofficial English fan translation of the Japanese 3DS version of Dragon Quest XI (Sugi Sarishi Toki o Motomete), and a public beta is available.
What's translated:
- Menus, battles, items, spells, monsters, NPCs and story text
- Official PS4/Switch names where they are known
- Map labels, town banners, the title logo and the HOME menu banner
- Works in both 3D and 2D mode
Status: beta. A few lines may still be in Japanese, and some long lines can be tight in 2D mode. If you play it and spot something that looks off, a screenshot and where you were in the game is a big help.
This was made with AI assistance plus a lot of my own playtesting, so some wording may be awkward.
The project contains no game data of any kind. You need your own legally obtained copy of the game, and I won't share or discuss game files.
SUPPORT NOTE (please read before reporting a problem)
This is a free fan project made in my spare time, so I can't offer troubleshooting for every device or setup.
- If a game runs badly or crashes only on a certain emulator, device or setup, that is usually down to the emulator, its settings or the hardware, not the patch. I can't diagnose those, and I won't be replying to emulation-issue questions on this post.
- Some crashes really can be caused by the patch. I test the current releases myself on both emulator and real hardware, and when I can reproduce a problem, I fix it. If I can't reproduce it, it may be specific to your setup.
- If you hit a problem, the most helpful thing you can do is report it on the project's GitHub page and follow the reporting steps there (patch version, where you were in the game, real 3DS or emulator, 2D or 3D, and a screenshot or photo).
Please follow the GitHub page and this post for the latest releases. Thanks for understanding and for trying the patch!

Homebrew release Super Metroid 3DS port v0.6.0: modern controls, Zero Mission / Fusion style
Hi again! A new stable release of the Super Metroid 3DS port is out, and this one is all about how it plays.
Modern controls (optional)
You can now switch between the original SNES controls and a new MODERN scheme, closer to Zero Mission and Fusion. No more cycling weapons with SELECT:
- Samus always runs (the speed booster kicks in on its own); hold B to walk.
- L aims diagonally up; press Down while holding L to aim down (it stays down until you press Up or let go of L).
- R + X fires missiles (power bombs in morph ball), R + Y the grapple beam, R + B the X-ray scope.
- SELECT switches between missiles and super missiles; the HUD marks which one R + X will fire.
- Y rolls into and out of the morph ball, even mid-jump.
Pick it in OPTIONS → CONTROLS on the bottom screen, or in the game's own controller setting screen. The "?" next to CONTROLS shows every button for both schemes, and the item pickup messages explain the modern buttons. The original controls are untouched, and achievements, saves and save states work the same with both.
Also new
- Item tracker: the map shows where items are, and a window counts what's left in each area (spoilers optional).
- Redesigned STATUS tab: tap a weapon to select it, reserve tanks and an AUTO/MANUAL toggle.
- The language can now be chosen from the game's own options menu too. Translations (Spanish, Catalan, French, Portuguese) are plain text files, so you can add your own language on the SD card without rebuilding.

As always, no ROM is included: you need your own legal Super Metroid (JU) ROM.
Still to do: a full 100% playthrough on hardware, the Ceres escape and Ridley fight with 3D on Old 3DS/2DS (still around 40-50 FPS), and a few visual glitches (lava edge rows while scrolling, Crocomire in widescreen). Feedback on the modern controls is especially welcome: the scheme is new and I'll keep tuning it.
Transparency note: same as before, the code is written by AI under my direction; I lead the features, debugging and testing on real hardware.

I made a Neo Geo emulator that runs at full speed on an Old 3DS
RetroArch didn't run Neo Geo games well enough on my Old 3DS, so I made my own.
The video is from an early build. A lot has changed since then, so here's where it's at now (1.0.8).
How it works: a small Windows converter turns a Neo Geo game into a CIA. Install it with FBI and the game gets its own icon and banner on the home menu, like a regular title.
Running at full speed on my Old 3DS: KOF 98, 99, 2000 and 2002, Metal Slug X and 3, SVC Chaos, Samurai Shodown V Special. Others have reported KOF 2003, Metal Slug 5 and Garou at 60 fps as well. Metal Slug 2, X and 3 still slow down in their busiest scenes, but the original arcade board does that too.
New since the video:
- Touch menu on the bottom screen
- Button remapping per game, including combos like A+B or C+D
- Turbo button
- Restart with a long press or SELECT+START
- Smoother heavy scenes and a sound timing fix in 1.0.8
Battery is about 5 hours from a full charge on my Old 3DS (middle brightness, Wi-Fi off).
Everything (download, setup, compatibility list, and a write-up on how it fits into the Old 3DS's memory) is in the README:
https://github.com/zzcx88/neo3ds/blob/main/README.en.md

Homebrew release Super Metroid 3DS port v0.5.0: ~60 FPS on Old 3DS/2DS, now even with 3D on
UPDATE – v0.6.0 is out (new post)
The latest stable release is v0.6.0: modern controls, Zero Mission / Fusion style

Hi again! A new stable release of the Super Metroid 3DS port is out, and this one is all about the older consoles.
Performance (the big one)
- Old 3DS / 2DS: the rooms I measured now run at ~59-60 FPS, also with the 3D slider up. (v0.3.0 ran around 45-57 in those same rooms, and the heavy ones dropped to the mid-40s with 3D.)
- New 3DS: still a solid 60.
- The bottom screen (map and status tabs) no longer causes hitches.
- Known exception: the opening Ceres escape and the Ridley fight there can still dip on Old 3DS/2DS with 3D on (around 40-50 FPS). That's next on the list and will be polished in the next updates.
New
- Low-energy warning: the bottom screen's tabs blink yellow, then red, when energy runs low (as in my Zero Mission port).
Also since v0.3.0
- The updater shows what's new before installing; betas are labelled BETA.
- Reorganized OPTIONS, a 30 FPS lock, FPS counter in any corner, and an option to hide the half of the HUD that the bottom screen already shows.
- Widescreen and 3D fixes (enemies leaving the screen, Spore Spawn's depth).

[Release] Plex3DS - Native Plex client for 3DS (video, music with sleep mode, offline downloads)
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hey guys, I got tired of having to convert video files manually or unscrew my New 3DS backplate every time I wanted to load media onto my SD card, so I decided to build a native Plex client for the 3DS. Full disclosure on how this was made: I've worked in Big Tech for the last 10 years, but honestly haven't handwritten code professionally in over a year—that's just how the workflow is these days. I built this using AI coding tools as a pair programmer, but backed it up with proper engineering: set up the devkitARM toolchain, wrote automated test suites, and spent hours debugging and profiling directly on physical hardware so this isn't just broken vibe-code. It genuinely runs solid. It connects straight to your Plex server over your network (or remote via Plex Token) and is packaged as both a .3dsx and an installable .cia for the HOME Menu.
What it does:
- Streams Video & Music: Connects to your Plex server over Wi-Fi. Remembers your resume positions for TV episodes and movies.
- Background Music / Clamshell Mode: If you have headphones plugged in, you can close the 3DS lid to shut off the screens while keeping music playing. If the headphones get unplugged, it pauses so it doesn't blare through the speakers in your pocket.
- Seeking: L/R triggers skip ±15 seconds, or you can scrub the progress bar on the touch screen.
- Offline Downloads: If you're heading on a flight or road trip, you can download movies, episodes, or music albums directly to your SD card. It sorts them cleanly into structured folders (
/3ds/Plex3DS/media/) instead of dumping everything in one flat folder. - New 3DS Boost: Built with the 804MHz CPU clock and L2 cache enabled in the
.ciaso UI browsing stays snappy. - Wireless CIA Install: I included a quick python script in the repo that serves a local QR code so you can install the CIA straight through FBI over Wi-Fi without popping out the microSD card.
Setup & Install:
Grab the .cia or .3dsx from the GitHub releases: Repo: https://github.com/herdlevar/plex-3ds
Releases: https://github.com/herdlevar/plex-3ds/releases
- CIA install: Scan the QR code or install
Plex3DS.ciausing FBI. It gives you a custom Plex banner/icon right on the HOME Menu. - 3DSX install: Drop
Plex3DS.3dsxandPlex3DS.smdhintosdmc:/3ds/Plex3DS/. On first launch, you can configure your server IP, port (default 32400), and Plex Token either in the in-app settings or by editingsdmc:/3ds/Plex3DS/config.json. If you run into any bugs or format issues with your specific Plex setup, let me know or open an issue on GitHub. Hope some of you find it useful!

Discussion Can anyone please recommend me some really cool 3DS projects?
Hello! I’ve been getting back into my 3DS again, and I just found out about so many cool projects! Like ports for Melee, Mario Kart Wii, and Halo?? Also, a battery upgrade that can last up to 10 hours? What??!
I saw something about a Minish Cap native port with a bottom screen, and one for Emerald, but I can’t seem to find them again. Could anyone recommend some other really cool projects I should check out and can you please send some links?

Found CTRelay — a real 3DS joining an Azahar netplay room over the internet for local-wireless play. Is this real? Anyone tried it?
Just stumbled upon this and wanted to share + sanity-check it with people who know more than me.
CTRelay (https://github.com/zeusfail/ctrelay) claims to let a real 3DS running Luma3DS (with a small patch) join a local-wireless session hosted by an Azahar instance somewhere else on the internet. As far as the game is concerned, it's talking to a nearby console over ad-hoc Wi-Fi.
Disclaimer: I'm not the author, just someone who found the repo. It's small (first release around July 2026) and I haven't tried it myself.
So — is this real? Has anyone here actually tried it? Does the UDS bridging hold up in real games?

Original post (v0.2.0)
Hey everyone!
After sharing the Zero Mission port a few days ago, quite a few people asked if something similar was possible for Super Metroid.
It turns out there was already an open-source base with some groundwork done for a 3DS port, so I decided to jump in, fix a bunch of issues, and push it much further to give it the same treatment as Zero Mission.
It's still an early work in progress, but I put together a working beta (v0.2.0) that is already quite playable:
What's currently in:
- Performance reworked: running at a solid 60 FPS on New 3DS, and hovering around 50–60 FPS on Old 2DS/3DS.
- Widescreen support (fills the top screen without stretching).
- Circle Pad / analog stick support.
- Dual-screen setup: bottom screen displays a live map, status screen, and options.
- Save states support.
- Integrated some missing community translations.
What's still missing / WIP:
- Stereoscopic 3D support (working on this next).
- Additional custom control mappings / shortcuts.
- General polish and bug fixing.
Just like with the previous port, no copyrighted game files or ROMs are included. You need to provide your own legal Super Metroid ROM file to run it.
You can grab the first beta build here: https://github.com/tinaut1986/sm-3ds/releases/tag/v0.2.0
Repository: https://github.com/tinaut1986/sm-3ds
I haven't had time to do a 100% full run yet, so if you try it out on your console and run into any glitches, softlocks, or weird behavior, please let me know. Hope you enjoy testing it!
Transparency note:
To avoid bad vibes and keep things 100% upfront: all the code here is generated by AI based on my directions.
While I’m a programmer, I have zero background in 3DS hardware or emulator engines—I act as the project lead deciding the features, debugging direction, and architecture, while the AI does the actual code writing. I'm not trying to take credit for low-level mastery I don't have; I just wanted to see Super Metroid running like this on the 3DS.

Shortcut3ds: Turn any .3dsx or GBA ROM into a real HOME Menu icon, right in your browser
I made a small tool that puts homebrew apps and GBA games on the HOME Menu as proper icons, with their own name, icon and banner.
Website: https://jeramai.github.io/shortcut3ds/
Drop a .3dsx or a .gba, get a .cia, install it with FBI. It runs entirely in your browser (Python + WebAssembly); nothing is uploaded.
Two kinds of icon:
- Native: the app is converted into a real CIA and opens as its own title. GBA games include a tested mGBA build, so you only need the ROM.
- Shortcut: a tiny CIA that starts the .3dsx on your SD card through Luma's homebrew loader, so it always runs the newest version of the app.
- There is also a CLI for macOS and Linux (pipx install the wheel from the releases), which can copy everything to the SD card for you.
- It's alpha: tested on my "New 3DS" with Luma3DS v13.3.3. Bug reports and console test results are very welcome. Adding another file type (another emulator, for example) is one Python class; there's a guide in CONTRIBUTING.md.
Hope this helps somebody!

Homebrew release LocalSend3DS v1.0.0 - LocalSend file transfers on Nintendo 3DS
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hi!
I recently released LocalSend3DS, an unofficial LocalSend-compatible client for the Nintendo 3DS family.
It lets your 3DS discover and transfer files with official LocalSend clients on the same local network.
I’ve tested it on a real New Nintendo 2DS XL with:
macOS
Linux
Android
Both .3dsx and .cia builds are available, and LocalSend3DS can now also be installed directly through Universal-Updater.
GitHub:
https://github.com/thevalmarch/localsend3ds
Current limitations include one file per transfer, no folder/text/clipboard transfers, and no PIN-protected recipients.
If anyone tries it on another 3DS/2DS model, I’d love to hear how it works for you!
