Suggestion Mods ruined this sub.
It’s nothing but people showing off their 3DSs. Any topics about 3DS games or meet-ups, or anything beyond the collection and monetary aspect of the 3DS is removed and deemed ‘low effort.’ Truly awful to see the sub become this.

u/xGougedOutx Feb 02 '26
I'm not even part of the sub and I keep getting posts of people bragging about deals, stupid "Do I BuY ThIs GuYs" posts and people flexing their console hoard, which is the absolute lowest effort posts.
Like there's plenty more to talk about, the 3DS has a pretty good library, dunno why I dont see posts about the actual games
53
u/Fine-Funny6956 Feb 02 '26
That’s a big problem in every tech or retro gaming sub. The problem is really that you don’t see much else here. I just joined since I got my first 3DS just to see which games were most talked about but I really haven’t seen much discussion.
26
u/xGougedOutx Feb 02 '26
Yeah, people are trying to make everything about money in one way or another in basically every hobby. It also doesn't allow for any discussion compared to discussing games, accessories, things to do with CFW, etc
3
u/ThisMuffinIsAwesome Feb 03 '26
Is there really any other content for these "dead" consoles? I sub to PS3 and there also isn't really much else apart from "is my PS3 dead?" and "look at my PS3/games".
It's just the way things are for these subreddits. It's really nice that some new people are picking up the 3ds for the first time in their lives come to this subreddit, but the game discussions posts that are years old will probably be better than posts now, since the memories of games are fresher in people's minds then.
7
u/Fine-Funny6956 Feb 03 '26
There’s a lot of discussion about “underrated” and “overrated” games as well as discussions about streamers who cover the games and systems. A lot of people discuss modding. SNES modders were keen on the HDMI mods for a while, until just about everyone agreed that the CRT era consoles aren’t worth modding for High Def unless you have a 720p CRT
78
u/Swan-Existing Feb 02 '26
You forgot all the nearly identical posts complaining about prices (I agree they’re insane, but barely anyone is adding anything to the discussion)

This is hilarious. Not your post specifically but just how asswipey the mods of this sub are. I once put a lot of effort into arranging my substantial 3DS collection for photos and then writing a lengthy post about what was special or noteworthy in the collection and why the system is so important to me, and had the post deleted for being low-effort. Now you’re telling me they’re just letting people post pics of their collection and those posts stay up?

u/blahblahlucas Feb 02 '26

The short version is that, while I had been blogging about games for a long time before the system came out, the first thing I ever did that got me noticed to the point where I started getting paid work writing about games was this IGN wiki: https://www.ign.com/wikis/nintendo-3ds/3DS_XL_Shell_Swapping. I did this back then because I wanted an all-white 3DS XL... thankfully you absolutely do not have to do anything like this any more to get your system region free!
That led to a decade working as a games writer in various capacities, from editorial to marketing (you can see the early wordpress version of my old site on one of the images on that wiki!), a ton of connections with industry folks, and a collection of over 100 games and several systems (almost all of which I bought during the system's lifespan--basically one of each type, minus the original and original 2DS, neither of which I have any more.) The 3DS is not only my favorite handheld-only system ever, it kickstarted my entertainment industry career (which I have since left.)

Maybe at some point! I do love taking my collection out and taking pictures of it. Then again, I did just refer to the mods as asswipey...

From what the mod said, you’d be good now. The mod inferred they are less asswipey now 😆

Out of curiosity, can you share a link to that post in question? While it might be too late, I'll also share that to the group chat to see if anything can for future posts (and I do hope to approve any future posts).

I'm afraid not--over time, I ended up deleting it. Thanks for reaching out, though!

The post removal in question was back when the sub was moderated extremely poorly. I suggest you check the announcement
9
u/Kullen64 Feb 02 '26
It could be a mix of auto moderation and absent moderators. I help my friend run the DOA sub and if we just neglected it then it would quickly become overrun with very few topics and tons of things being filtered because no one is there to clear the queue. Try messaging the mod team and if you get nothing in response then yeah they’re either retarded or not even on Reddit anymore.
39
u/WiiUOwner-on-fandom Yes, I also own a 3DS. Feb 02 '26
I checked the user log for the user and it appears that their post is 2 years old. This subreddit only got new moderators who actually moderated like half a year ago or so, and that was when this subreddit had poor moderation.
14
u/Kullen64 Feb 02 '26
Daaaaaaang man. There’s a lot of subs like that unfortunately. Popular ones too. Good luck on getting things back in order 🙏
1
u/Creative-Syrup-6782 Feb 02 '26
Yup. The MOD running around the comments blowing smoke out his ass is hilarious.
1
u/retrokezins Feb 03 '26
I guess the real downside to reddit is wrong mods in a sub can really kill decent interactions. I've seen that some here...real interesting posts get pulled faster than BS posts for some reason...This sub seems better than it used to be though.

u/afhisfa Feb 02 '26
This sub was awesome like 6 months ago. Crazy how fast the conversation just devolved into facebook marketplace screenshots
142
u/StudentOfMind Feb 02 '26 edited Feb 02 '26
There are some decent posts but no, as a whole it wasn't even that good 6 months ago. I tried asking a repair question about a year and a half ago and it got deleted as not fitting the content of this sub.
Sorry, but considering we are discussing an end-of-life console, I think filtering conversation to more and more niche subs is no longer appropriate. Like, do I go to a a 3DS repair subreddit with 3 monthly active users or just go to ifixit? Choice is obvious to me.
Pre-2025 Mods* (see comment from mod below) suck.
15
u/Aspect-X- Sub Moderator / 2DS Owner Feb 02 '26
Hey, sorry that happened. The mod team a year and a half ago was much different than it is now, and I hope you can see how much it's improved here. The policies back then were much harsher, and nearly the entire mod team has changed since then. I suggest you give this post a read: https://www.reddit.com/r/3DS/s/nXfSZK8YG7
27
u/StudentOfMind Feb 02 '26
Sorry, but even if subreddit moderation has improved, it's coming way too late. The community microcosms where meaningful discussion is taking place are formed, and they aren't really on reddit.
It shouldn't have waited until 2025 for improvement. Even if you werent part of the mod team responsible for where we are now, moderation as a whole is what caused this subreddit to decline. To be fair to you, I'll edit my previous post to indicate that it's not the current mod teams fault.

u/Aspect-X- Sub Moderator / 2DS Owner Feb 02 '26
While I do agree that the subs reputation is in the gutter and the long lasting damage of the old mod team cant go away immediately after i fix some things, and that it shouldnt have taken this long, Im gonna keep trying🙂 Hopefully some day the sub can fully heal.
30
u/CiloTA Feb 02 '26
This is my biggest issue with the sub “Hey um just wondering if this is worth it?” and it’s just screenshots of someone’s sale listing. Or “I just bought this is it worth it?” And again pictures of someone’s random sales listing, which this version is even more irritating because clearly the OP didn’t buy anything they literally low effort their post with a story about a purchase and pics that aren’t their own.
-5
u/Aspect-X- Sub Moderator / 2DS Owner Feb 02 '26
We are prohibited all posts like that btw. Any posts complaining about the 3ds market with pictures of ebay/facebook marketplace listings will be removed as low quality.
16
u/Pokethomas Feb 02 '26
But the low quality posts you’ve been making recently to this sub aren’t seen as “low quality” right?
I fully expect to be banned because of this comment btw
18
u/Aspect-X- Sub Moderator / 2DS Owner Feb 02 '26
What low quality posts have I made recently?
And no, I would not ban you for that. That would be quite silly.
48
u/ElverDulero735 Feb 02 '26
Lmao, yeah, i agree, ane its not only this one, ive been in many subs, mainly games as it is the only valid reason to use reddit imo, and posting about things like softlocks, bugs, and so on will get deleted, meanwhile bragging posts or copy&paste topics are allowed.
117
u/KingDeDeMe Feb 02 '26
why actually play on the system when you can just buy 6 of them and take a picture of them
4
32
u/santeezy93 Feb 02 '26
This makes sense as to why a post I had saved about modding a 3DS is now deleted
16
u/langsamerduck Feb 02 '26 edited Feb 02 '26
Yeah they don’t let us have any actual interesting discussions, can’t even mention something is modded without it being deleted but hey let’s see another ebay screenshot, we’ve only seen like 200 of them.
And before the mod replies telling me I’m lying and that the sub rules allow for the mentioning of a console being modded just no encouraging/sharing it, that’s bullshit because multiple times I have tried commenting on a post where the 3DS HAPPENS to be modded but isn’t encouraging it, the entire post gets deleted.
3
u/TheRussness Feb 03 '26
Altering hardware or software for non licensed use has always been a sticky topic for any sub about consoles.
Especially Nintendo.
138
u/ButtsFartsoPhD Feb 02 '26
Also, I want to note I’m not against showing off collections! But mods actively discourage discourse of other topics and it’s the weirdest thing.
-68
u/Aspect-X- Sub Moderator / 2DS Owner Feb 02 '26
Yeah I just fail to see how that's true. We have a rule preventing collection posts on the weekends and have been much stricter on the low quality collection posts while being more lenient on discussion post.
We have done all we can to increase discussion, I think the issue is people are simply not making many compared to how many show off posts there are.
81
u/Deluxe_24_ Feb 02 '26
Why are collection posts banned on weekends? Like what actual reason is there to justify that?
What determines a "low quality" collection post? What metric exists to determine that?
50
20
u/Aspect-X- Sub Moderator / 2DS Owner Feb 02 '26
Collection/show off posts are banned on weekends for the very reason op is complaining about, they flood the sub and provide no meaningful discussion. It was suggested to us, and it was received very well in the announcement post, thus we keeped it.
A low quality collection post generally lacks a clear title, a description, or enough images. It's up to the mods discretion, but we will also hear out community reports.
29
u/quinn-of-aebradore Feb 03 '26
Doing the inverse and only allowing them on the weekends would be a much more effective solution. That is what I typically see when subreddits have this kind of a rule; a certain kind of post is restricted to one or two days of the week. That allows for the workweek to be a hub for proper discussions and other kinds of posts, while the weekends can be show-and-tell.
20
u/Aspect-X- Sub Moderator / 2DS Owner Feb 03 '26
I really like that idea and I think that could really help increase discussion. I've opened up a feedback thread here. If you can post that there as well, that'd be great. That way we can see what the community thinks of it as well.
21
u/ItsKendrone 2DS has my heart Feb 02 '26
I complete agree. It’s become the “Show off your 3DS subreddit” there’s no discussion just posts of people circle jerking and farming upvotes by “asking if this was a good deal” when it obviously was.
42
u/Atrium41 Feb 02 '26
People showing off their collection of 3ds consoles, and wondering why everyone is yelling at them.
It's not like they are directly responsible for the current pricing.

Every video game sub that isn't centered around modern consoles or modern game releases is like that. Lazy pictures of the console or whatever overpriced games the person bought instead of actual discussion. Reddit is a fucking terrible place to actually talk about video games, all people wanna do is show off their ebay purchases
19
u/Deluxe_24_ Feb 02 '26

As a serious question, have there been any posts about meet ups lately? And what posts about games were removed? While I don't speak as apart of the whole mod team, I would be open to forwarding your feedback for more discussion (as yes, your post was already noticed by one).
Plus while the collection post rule exists, I really do wonder about how expanding it would be (even though I'm not in the position to even do those changes). But regarding the meet ups, if the user reaches out to modmail, it should be approved. But I'm open to hearing your thoughts.
23
u/angelinaxxoxo Feb 02 '26

u/Fun-Flamingo-56 Feb 02 '26

10
u/AdZy14588 Feb 02 '26
When I saw this post heading I thought you meant mods as in "modded consoles" and was about to ROFL - Modded 3ds is so much better than stock. But no, to the actual post I agree with you.
1
u/NeonJungleTiger Feb 02 '26
I thought maybe they meant the influx of people just posting pictures of the systems with shells or decorations lol
32
u/DJFid Feb 02 '26
Mods just wanna see 3DS covered in stickers, "got this for (low amount + expensive items)" or the meme "got this for (astronomically high amount + broken console)" and not anything else
18
u/loveferne Feb 03 '26
tbh i like the “decoration” posts of people who have put stickers all over their 3ds. that is so much better than just seeing the same boring stock ones over and over
6
u/langsamerduck Feb 03 '26
Agreed, I like to see how people customize and personalize their console. There’s a lot more to talk about there than the price posts
2
u/DJFid Feb 03 '26
I also enjoy them at times. I think there are a lot, and I think people do it bc they see others do it on here. I'd like to see more customs/shell swaps, personally. It seems with the stickers people seek approval from others/try to join the hive mind rather than to embrace their individuality.
I had never seen anyone decorate their ds with stickers until I joined this sub. The same with caring about IPS screens.
2
u/Aspect-X- Sub Moderator / 2DS Owner Feb 02 '26
That's not true at all. As a mod here, I can confidentely say it's the opposite. We have done everything we can to increase discussion. We have brought back game of the month, we put a rule in place to prohibit collection/show off posts during the weekends to increase discussion, and we have agreed to be much harsher on the quality rule for collection posts. All we want to see is discussion posts, we just need people to start making them.
4
u/DJFid Feb 02 '26
I was just kidding mostly, it's just all i see in this sub so i wanted to be facetious about it bc reddit mods are alwayyyys to blame for everything bad on reddit.
11
u/Rayo1800 Feb 02 '26
I once tried to post a picture of my custom stickers that I made for my 2DS and titled it "Do you guys like my stickers?". It got instantly removed cause they detected it was "asking a question"
8
u/SephirothTheGreat Feb 03 '26
I HATE that rule with a fucking passion. So what if I am asking a question, isn't that the whole fucking premise of a discussion? To ask for feedback and different outlooks?

Mods ruin just about every sub. They see it as a weird way to excercise power in their otherwise powerless lives. Internet discussion is far more interesting without some weirdo breathing down your neck, curating topics and conversation to their arbitrary tastes.

I tired to have a discussion of speculation of pricing especially when the supply of World Edition games run out. Low effort. deleted.
Yeah, it’s rare anyone talk about the actually games. I keep meaning to start a gaming journal then post it on here. I will do it for my next game.
6
u/Zander327 Feb 02 '26
Strange when every day there is another "N3DS vs N3DSXL?" Or "3DSXL vs N3DSXL?" post. At some point you would think we have enough posts on those exact topics. It's one thing if it's something specific, like how a particular game runs on one or the other.
But yeah it's that or "prices are getting insane" along with a picture of a particularly overpriced ebay listing that will never sell. I would love to see more discussion about games, repairs, etc. rather than just pictures of common special editions or 3DS + stickers. But if people are upvoting these posts it means some people do want to see them, so it is what it is.
7
u/kerrwashere Feb 03 '26

I tried asking for a fix to a problem here and no one answered it, but a post about someone's 3DS with stickers one it got attention. This was a few weeks ago and i haven't been able to fix said problem because i can't find a solution in a google search (which is why i asked for help here). The sub is overrun with people showing off their 3DS systems and stuff, but when someone genuinely has a problem with their system? Overlooked. Not important. Really pmo

My tamagotchi club usually all bring their 3DSes to street pass at meetups! If there is a tamagotchi club in your city or area, follow their schedule of events and plan to walk by where they are meeting and you should get a few street passes.

EDIT: A feedback thread has been opened up here, feel free to suggest changes there. I'm going to lock this thread as it's getting quite chaotic here. Please move your suggestions to the new thread.
Hey there.
Im very curious to why you think we "only allow collection posts."
For starters, we literally have a rule preventing them on weekends. This rule was a community suggestion, and it has helped increase discussion.
Secondly, we are much more lenient on the high quality rule for disscussion posts than we are collection posts. We have actually all agreed to be much more strict on collection posts due to the community feedback around them being so harsh. We have also installed a new automod filter which sends posts with no description to the mod queue to review, as thats generally an indicator of a low quality post.
Third of all, we have decided to prohibit monetary posts (assuming you mean posts complaining about the 3ds market) as they are generally seen as low effort.
Fourth, us being more strict on the low effort rule was put in by a post exactly like this. Like, im trying man. I've responded to so many posts like these, I've changed so many rules, so many policies, removed this, added that, but you guys still find a way to say we are doing it all wrong. What do you want, really.
Because being more strict on low effort rule was because of this post right here, which everyone in the comments seemed to agree with. Now suddenly you all want the opposite.
Help me help you and give me an actual suggestion to make the sub better other than "mods ruined the sub."
