Posting my 23andme and AncestryDNA results for comparison. Ancestry took the right step in renaming their West African regions to center the people who live there, not the modern borders.
- My mom's Igbo and Yorubaland on AncestryDNA (3rd pic) might be high because of the endogamy that went on in the South (we're from TN, MS, and AL)
- Have found 12 cousins with 90-100% Igboland ancestry. Whether they're all Igbo is up in the air because scoring high %s of Igboland ≠ Igbo person because Ancestry also has Esan, Ibibio, Idoma, and Igala groups in the reference panel.
- 23andMe assigned Urhobo and Itsekiri a year ago, I have found 1 Urhobo distant cousin on Ancestry now but they scored 100% Igboland. Either way, there has to be some distant Urhobo / Edo connection
- I have found 2 Akan distant cousins as well and a lot of Senegalese or Hausa/Fulani ones too
- It’s cool that the Jola people (the ones who are credited with the origins of the banjo) kind of have their own region in Ancestry (Southern Senegal).
- The continents stayed the same but my European went back up 2% so Ancestry has me at 68/32.
