Build Help / Purchase Advice I played at 60Hz on my 240Hz monitor for 8 months
Back in February i got a 240Hz monitor and spent the months since telling everyone how buttery it was, and i SWEAR it felt that way to me!! (as of last week the work laptop shares that monitor too, hooked up thru anker's new smart display hub, VALORANT edition bc i watch an embarrassing amount of VCT.) The laptop's display settings showed 240Hz... and the PC? 60Hz.
Turns out the PC has been running off the old monitor's HDMI cable the entire time, while the DisplayPort cable never left its box (twist tie still wrapped on it)!! One swap last night and its like a different screen entirely. The better part of EIGHT MONTHS insisting i could feel a difference thru a cord that wasnt even capable of it!! Go look at yours... seriously

Meme/Macro I'm tired of game companies not putting in the effort, we need to stop paying for games that don't pay attention to the finer details.

Discussion For those who live in the UK or Australia, where Steam has restricted accounts if you don't have credit cards, what are your plans?
So I have been thinking about switching mostly to GOG for the time being.
But I find myself curious, I see a lot of Aussies online saying they don't have a credit card, but they never say what their plans are.
So, you got any plans?

News/Article SteamOS on Your Phone Is Finally Here! Droid Deck
I've been playing with Droid Deck on Samsung S24 Ultra for the last couple of days and it is pretty awesome app.
There is a lot of work to be done in terms of compatibility but the app gets regular updates.
Droid Deck does not work with all games , but when a game runs on it , the experience is just as good as using Steam Deck.
I spent the last couple of hours playing Batman - The Talltale Series with Xbox controller and it is surreal experience to know that a phone can run a Windows PC game.
The app has everything you need , it has options for upscaling , controller , performance slider , performance meter , resolution slider etc.
DroidDeck requires an Android device running Adreno 730 or newer GPU.
Google Tensor, and Exynos Xclipse graphics are currently unsupported. You'll also need 3 GB of free storage for the Linux runtime.
I have two step verification set up for my Steam account.

Hi guys, I'm KG, I'm 18 and just started college and wanted to get a lil some some for my work and Roblox gaming (and the Solo leveling arise) and I was looking over some laptops and found these 3 budget friendly ones for me, so I've come to the pros to ask which one is more worth getting.

Tech Support Needing help with "video memory allocation" issues
Long story short, did driver update recently and accidentally did windows update too, and ever since I did those, I keep running into crashes in all of my games, even those that are on minimum settings from a "video memory allocation" issue, but i never see a spike in usage so I dont know where to even begin. Any ideas or solutions?
Edit: specs are Ryzen 9 7900X, 64GB DDR5, 3 SSDs ( 1TB, 4TB, 4TB), RTX 5070 with 12GB
Edit 2: reliability monitor says 5 programs "stopped working" at the same time as the crash: MicrosoftSecurityApp.exe, dwm.exe, CorsairDeviceListerService.exe, Desktop Window Manager, and Wallpaper Engine
Edit 3: another crash, no spike in usage according to the system monitor, error says "Ran out of memory allocating 32.1 MiB with alignment 0"

Tech Support PC not recognizing TV as display (RTX4090 | HDMI 10 meter AOC cable | LG CX)
I've been fighting with this issue for so long that I no longer know what to do.
I have the MSI RTX 4090 SUPRIM 24G and LG CX.
My PC is in another room, so as a ghetto solution I'm sometimes using a 10 meter cable to connect to a TV. Back in the day it used to work but at one time I just stopped getting the output to the tv. Since then I'm using some kind of adapter to connect it to DP but it grind my gears. Naturally I've been making sure to connect it appropriately in terms of Source and Display as it says on the connector.
Current status is:
* PC doesn't see the TV as a display I can choose. Like it was not connected. I had a brief moment recently when it worked again but no idea how or why.
* The TV does know that something is connected as it's highlighted in white on the input selection
* When I boot up the PC with the HDMI connected I get the image for a moment when it's still in BIOS. But once it goes to Windows the image is gone
For the things I've already tried:
* Tested various cables. The cables I've been using so far (all tested with other devices like laptops or PS5) CLAROC HDMI 2.1 AOC 8K Ultra High Speed 8K@60 4K@120 10m x2 and UNITEK HDMI 2.1 AOC 8K Ultra High Speed 8K@60 4K@120 10m (all of them are optical)
* Many different versions of drivers with full DDU
* Different HDMI inputs on LG CX
* Some weird ass TV reset (fully disconnected TV from electricity for a couple of minutes and connected again)
* Changing options for a given HDMI input in the TV itself (HDMI ULtra HD Deep Color, AMD Freesync and Instant Game Response)
* Even disconnecting the soundbar from the TV to see if it changes anything
* Tested with a shorter cable from PS5 (also HDMI 2.1) and it worked fine with a non-optical, shorter cable
That's really it, had no other ideas and couldn't really find anything else that would be helpful. Thanks to anyone that might help :D

Question Electric duster is not moving the dust behind my VRM heatsink, so am I using it wrong?
After switching from canned air to a corded electric duster, the first deep clean was weirdly mixed. Loose dust came out of the front mesh and filters right away, but one dense clump tucked behind the VRM heatsink just kept shifting around instead of leaving the board. Different angles mostly made the desk louder, not cleaner. Is there a specific nozzle, distance, or brush combo people use for those tight motherboard spots, or do you still keep a can of compressed air around for the stubborn corners?

Hardware PC Tweaking
Recently, my pc has done this thing were it randomly crashes practically all my games. Valorant won't even open and says a critical error has appeared. While Minecraft crashes the moment I try to join a world. Their is fortnite which crashes a few minutes after playing. Then their is Rocket League which has crashed maybe once and seems to be the only playable game. All the error codes seem to be leading me towards a corrupted file on my pc or something along the lines. But I already tried resetting the PC to see if that made a change and it didn't. I even switched the RAM and the graphics card and still no change. It randomly crashes giving me the black error code screen and instantly restarts itself. I just got the CPU and Motherboard (doubt they are the problem) replaced in the last 2 months and everything was working perfectly smooth up until a few days ago out of nowhere. Is their a way to better determine a certain cause of the problem without obviously taking it in? any advice is greatly appreciated (so confused)
Valorant error code copied this-C:\Users\-----~1\AppData\Local\Temp\PKM4811.tmp

Question Why don't PC games have surround sound like Atmos when the console versions do?
I've noticed a few times the same games on PS5 will have surround sound support and the PC versions don't. Also if they do, you have to remember to install the software to actually output it... As well as configure it.
I have a sweet Dolby Atmos setup with dual subs, overhead speakers, massive towers and all, and many PC games in comparison to the console versions sound terrible when connected to my receiver (even if they are technically outputting Atmos, it sounds like simulated vs actually using the codec.
Has anyone else experienced this? Remember when many motherboards would actually have surround sound outputs? What happened?

Tech Support I recently did a case swap and all went pretty smoothly and my PC works great, but one of my hard drives is not recognized what to do?
The SATA and power cable is definitely connected, other than that I haven't checked anything else. I even tried a different port for the SATA on the MOBO but that was not the problem. My motherboard is the B450m DS3H v2 .

Question 16ft USB cable work with controller?
Sorry I wasn't really sure where to post this, but I have a Gamesir G7 HE and Vadar 5s wired controllers. The ten or so foot long cables they game with are just barely long enough to reach my couch when I hook my pc up to my TV (or use my Xbox). So I was debating about buying a roughly 16ft USB cable. Will this length be ok or will the distance require an active USB cord to prevent any signal loss / connection issues?

Build/Battlestation Always worth it to let people know you are into computers.
So in the last week I had a co worker give me a couple of computers that she no longer uses. Two older laptops and a HP all in one. Nothing crazy. Nothing that would run Windows 11 without some workarounds with the installer.
However later in the week another older lady that I used to work with at a previous job happened to see me and we got to catching up. I had helped her with some computer and phone issues in the past so before we parted ways she mentioned that she had a laptop that she no longer had a use for and asked if I wanted it. Of course I said yes.
After work I headed over to her house to pick up the computer. To my amazement she handed me a ACER NITRO 5! The laptop is more than 5 years old, but it has pretty nice specs. A 9th gen core i5, 8 gigs of ram, 128gb nvme ssd and a GTX 1650 GPU.
Opening up the laptop I saw that i had an open ram slot and a second nvme slot. Remembering the HP all in one from earlier in the week it occurred to me that although the HP could not run Windows 11, it did have a 4GB ram stick and another 128GB nvme ssd that would fit in the Acer.
So I opened the HP, salvaged the ram and storage, plugged them into the Nitro and viola! Now the laptop has 12GB of DDR4 Ram and 256GB of NVME storage! I also took the time to take apart the laptop, clean the fans and heatsink, apply new thermal paste and install Windows 11. There is also a spot of a 2.5 inch drive as well as a backlit keyboard.
It works perfectly! Even the battery still works. Best of all the whole thing was free. I just wanted to make this post to remind people that sometimes it pays to help people with technology or let them know you are into computers. You never know what may come of it.
Thanks for reading.
