Well-known Ukrainian military aerial reconnaissance specialist Oleksandr "Serg Marco" Karpiuk writes on Facebook:

"...Starlink is a civilian communications system. And SpaceX is responsible for its civilian use. Standard Starlink terminals currently have a default speed limit of 22 m/s.

To enable flight at speeds above 22 m/s, Ukraine signed contracts for Starshield, which is overseen by the Pentagon. This is already a military system, with Starlink terminals that offer greater functionality, although the accounts are considerably more expensive.

And it was the Pentagon that did two things in a single day: restricted intelligence sharing and changed the parameters of Starshield accounts.

This was a decision by the head of the Pentagon, Pete Hegseth. Clearly on Trump's orders...."

Via Illia Pomonorenko via social media. Looks like Hegseth is the one responsible for this right now.

They signed a deal and don’t get what they paid for? Sounds bad for anyone using US military tech if they can change things as they please.

u/onee_san_bath_water 3h ago

Relying on a foreign nation for a nation’s own defense is always a horrible strategic mistake

With what the US is doing, other nations are watching and taking notes

That’s why France’s decision decades ago to have its own military ecosystem (especially nukes) separate from the US will always be one of the best strategic decisions of the modern era

“You may be sure that the Americans will commit all the stupidities they can think of, plus some that are beyond imagination.” - Charles de Gaulle

“You can depend on Americans to do the right thing when they have exhausted every other possibility.”

•

u/Hotshot2k4 8m ago

Not anymore. Apparently this administration will stop doing anything once it's threatened with the prospect of having to do the right thing.

28

u/TheRealMisterd 3h ago

Like...buying F35 fighters and the U.S. using a kill switch?

4

u/Armisael 1h ago

There's no kill switch; that's a silly idea and I wish people would stop acting like it's true.

Denying parts for maintenance and software patches kills jets just as well and doesn't require you put a gaping hole in your cutting edge military platforms.

Not sure what the terms are, but for us normal people those contracts are "you'll take it up the ass and you'll like it".

41

u/luksfuks 5h ago

22m/s ? So you can't use Starlink in a car unless you stop?

22m/s == 80kph == 50mph

29

u/Enorats 4h ago

Not sure where he's getting 22 m/s, but in the US at least it's around 100 mph where connections start getting spotty and dropping out.

15

u/luksfuks 4h ago

This sounds more reasonable. This number is closer to the original 2G GSM speed limit in the 90s (130kph), which by the way was considered insufficient and soon doubled with the introduction of dual band GSM (still 2G).

7

u/Arthur233 4h ago

Thanks for sharing. It's interesting to see the depth of knowledge that people have in the seemingly most random things.

15

u/Nerezza_Floof_Seeker 4h ago

In ukraine normal starlink use is heavily restricted nowadays to prevent its use in drones (thats for starshield); its fundamentally meant to be a civilian system after all.

3

u/SnooPuppers8698 2h ago

correct, in Ukraine only, you cannot use it in a car faster than 50mph.

The US President then announced an energy truce on Oct. 11 that neither Kyiv nor Moscow confirmed, insisting the two sides agreed “because I said, ‘You agree.’”

Although Ukraine abided by the abrupt ceasefire announcement, Russia continued striking Ukraine nationwide. On Wednesday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Trump’s energy truce was never defined, so Russia cannot be accused of breaking it.

Ukraine abided the Trump's spontaneous energy ceasefire, Russia didn't. But Ukraine is punished with deadly and unannounced restrictions.

u/Choice-Water-4354 4h ago

It doesn't make any sense other than Trump and Musk being traitors. So when where you going to prosecute them for high treason?

16

u/GerryManDarling 3h ago

This time it seems to be purely Trump. Trump controlled StarShield and the intel. Musk only control the commercial Starlink. It seems to be StarShield and intel are the problem, so Trump is the culprit.

As a US citizen, this is absolutely disgusting and I agree, we did betray Ukraine and for what? So Putin can die with some sort of ghetto legacy???

These past few years make me personally ashamed to even be an American.

228

u/SouthernEdgeCase 4h ago

What was it for?! That sweet mid-term diesel…that will do nothing to help the actual issue. The only benefit to anyone is the benefit the Republicans get from the few idiots that vote R because they believe it.

31

u/Ronho 4h ago

Russia doesn’t have any diesel to send us. They are using almost all of it

15

29

u/Grave806 3h ago

A few other people have said this doesn't feel like them trying to get the diesel, it feels like a reprisal against Ukraine for taking down the bot data center. And honestly I kinda agree.

7

u/Aptosauras 2h ago

Without the bots it'll be harder to hide the rigging of the upcoming elections.

→ More replies (1)

63

u/mentat70 3h ago

I would guess there is a lot more going on between Putin and Trump than just the sale of a little diesel that is making Trump behave this way. Whether that involves a lot of money going to Trump and/or his family and their businesses or whether Putin has info that would be very damaging to Trump, I can’t say, but trump‘s past behavior has demonstrated that he doesn’t do anything unless he getting something in exchange.

31

u/Hertzcanblowme 2h ago

Trump’s a Russian asset. This was always the plan. But now he’s worried about losing midterms so he has to speed it along.

→ More replies (2)

54

u/Worthyness 4h ago

Not even that much diesel. Its like a week's worth of fuel. Its hardly anything. Its not even enough to alleviate prices. Company will buy it cheap and then sell at current pricing because theyll run out by weeks end and need to increase prices again anyway

17

u/mentat70 3h ago

It’s almost as if the sale of the diesel was to give a apparent reason why Trump is abandoning Ukraine and jumping on Team Russia’s side, obfuscating the real reason (hint: probably $$$$)

28

u/Lopsided_Mud1712 3h ago

More like 15 hours worth -- will not move the price at pump

27

u/Temporary-Chard-6827 3h ago

A week? Lool not even a day.

5

u/OneMoistMan 3h ago

We export more diesel than we are getting in this “deal”

Horrifying betrayal. It will take decades to restore trust, if ever. How can we trust future American administrations?? Absolutely rage inducing.

23

u/afrophysicist 2h ago

It will take decades to restore trust, if ever.

Yeah it's going to be never. The rest of the world can't be held hostage by the stupidest voters in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan every 4 years, hopefully the rest of the world decouples from the US as soon as possible

37

u/Nanaman 4h ago

If they’re Republicans you can’t

Democrats wouldn’t have done this

62

u/LheelaSP 4h ago

Even IF there will be elections and IF they are fair and IF democrats retake all branches of government, and that's three big IFs, any trust can only be short term.

Long term trust is permanently destroyed. The rest of the world can not trust the american public to not elect another dementia patient as their dictator in the future, so any plan beyond the term of the current president will have to assume that the US can and will turn hostile towards the rest of the western world.

If all it takes to withdrawal from these agreements is a matter of internal politics then nobody will make good deals with the US. Regardless of who's in the Whitehouse. Time for the EU to stand up. Ban ALL Elon affiliated companies!

210

u/steffan_ 5h ago

No - its just a time to get to work and build sovereign solutions...
One cannot simply ban the way to peace.

70

u/TheThousandMasks 4h ago

Or just straight up nationalize the facilities, equipment, tech - reverse engineer it and cut Elon out entirely. You don’t respect copyrights of the enemy during war.

25

u/15_Redstones 4h ago

What facilities? The only stuff in the EU is ground antennas. There's nothing you can reverse engineer from that that you couldn't already get from disassembling a Starlink kit bought from the hardware store.

The important stuff like satellite manufacturing is all in the US, whose government already controls what Starlink can or cannot do.

→ More replies (7)

4

u/phoenix1984 2h ago

Unfortunately, it’d be pretty easy to block those base stations in response. They’d be disconnected before the raid was over. The hardware could probably be repurposed, but Europe would still need to create and launch their own satellites.

I saw on x that they turned it back on because the EU threatened to withhold the frequencies spacex uses effectively banning him from operating in the eu.

102

u/TemporarySun314 5h ago

Yeah. I mean if starlink don't wanna provide service to conditions that are useful to Europe, then these frequencies should be given to providers who want to do that.

Frequency space is limited.

63

u/Ourtimehascome2485 5h ago

Frankly i believe we should Favor domestic providers anyway. Relying on American tech is a liability

As an American. I agree with you! I’m so sick of American corporations having a stranglehold on every aspect of the financial market. Give them something to compete against and maybe they’ll actually have to start creating quality products at competitive prices instead of just having a global monopoly on everything. They’ve gotten way too comfortable not having to compete for their customers and it’s killing the economy both here in the states and abroad.

Did you even read the article? Musk explicitly said Starshield actions are run and thus ultimately decided by the US government, going so far as to say that the ultimate decision maker is even POTUS when it comes to Starshield.

Comments like yours must be Russian bot farms honestly. You want Starlink (or Starshield) removed from Ukraine when it’s been the single biggest reason they’ve been able to handle Russia its ass. Even Fedorov, today no less, thanked Musk for the “unbelievable support” he has provided to Ukraine and his forces. The only reason you’d want Starshield access removed, even temporarily, is because you want to give Russia an advantage.

2

u/Take_the_elevator 2h ago

It also speaks volumes about the character of the supporters who continue to stand behind them during their speeches.

59

u/rikeoliveira 5h ago

This is what really gets me. They are playing with people's lives and suffering. This corruption and the lies are not restricted to the US economy, or allies economy (and livelihood), they are not passively killing people, they are actively contributing to Ukranian's deaths. They are actively helping Russia be successful on hiring Ukranian civil infrastructure, and preventing Ukraine to defend theirselves and/or hitting back.

The US is funding and helping a dictatorship invading a sovereign country. What a fucking disgrace.

There was talk of backup European alternatives if Starlink was completely pulled. They would be worse, but it's something.

How about we start deploying them NOW alongside Starlink, as a test, fix any issues that will arise and make it as good as possible. Instead of waiting for when it's suddenly needed and Ukraine goes dark for a month

11

u/probablypoo 4h ago

I’m gonna guess that the reason the European alternative is worse is because of the limited number of satelites compared to star link. You can’t really fix that with field testing.

backup European alternatives if Starlink

All you'll get is IRIS2, which when complete in 2032 will have less bandwidth than SpaceX has averaged launching each week for the past few years, and 1/5th of the bandwidth that SpaceX is willing to throw away on a suborbital test flight of Starship.

Judging by reports from Ukrainian analysts they are saying Starshield is the problem. Elon doesn’t have control over Starshield only the DoD and the Pentagon do. As much as I like to shit on Elon it does really seem that this was a Trump move to try and pressure Ukraine, especially since a lot of their interceptor drones are the main ones affected.

What I think happened with Starlink/shield: Trump told Pete Hegseth to punish Zelensky for "disobeying" him, and Hegseth dutifully fucked with Ukraine's access to Starshield. And for my fellow Americans this is why Trump will never get rid of Hegseth no matter how drunk, incompetent and unprofessional he becomes, and no matter how much Hegseth's public approval tanks. People are absolutely waiting for the midterms. Should they? Probably not, but its being turned into a barometer for whether we're still a democracy or not. Either the democrats win and people put down their guard and let them try and fight, or they lose and we enter "the cool zone".

3

The only thing that motivates Americans to do anything is gas prices. They don't care about things like this and to make connections between this and gas prices is too much to ask.

•

u/wingnuta72 1h ago

They aren't.

For all the bluster on Reddit, Americans voted in Trump twice. Countless times their constitution has been broken and laws ignored by this administration all with no consequences.

Americans have given up on their country.

3

u/poppin-n-sailin 2h ago

Never. The most common thing they say is that there is nothing they can do. That is pure bullshit. They're just disorganized and divided and have no desire to change that. and while they also claim the election was stolen and that the next one will be too, they still think all they have to do is wait and vote in the midterms, and then just keep sucking it up and waiting for the next presidential election and then it will be over and fixed. they're all well propagandized and complacent people and serve their corporate and private equity ruling class regardless of political lean.

2

Bro what do you want me to do? I'm surrounded by farms for hours you want me to go yell at a cow? The US is massive

•

u/Conscious-Start-4514 1h ago

Europeans just don't get it. France is smaller than Texas with a 1/5 the population of the US. A lot easier to protest when you live on top of each other in a smaller geographical area. Not to mention the fact that civilians armed with petty rifles are no match for the might of the US military. Easy to suggest throwing others into a meat grinder from the comfort of your home abroad.

Still, they aren't entirely off base. There is a good deal of complacency among us Americans. Not to mention so much division among the populace. 30% of the country would actively cheer the government mowing down their neighbors. They cheered when Trump joked about Iran nuking California.

You are expecting every american to risk their lives, their families lives, and in cases like mine lifelong torture, for something that as it stands isnt an immediate threat to our lives. It absolutely sucks, but you are calling people cowards for not wanting to risk their own lives and families lives/livelihoods.

Expecting people to risk death/torture for something that could be fixed in 2 months or years is dystopian as fuck.

Our gov fucking sucks, but it doesn’t suck enough for me to be willing to kill myself to have a tiny chance at changing things.

u/cienfuegos2607 48m ago

Your military is the biggest, the most expensive, the most equipped and the most experienced in the world. No one out here can do anything. You feel threatened because you are alone. C'mon, you guys have to organize yourselves. In anything.

You have the most evil person in charge of the the deadliest weapons. You have to do something because that's the burden to have the nukes.

Your anti-American rhetoric and belief that our elections are a sham is practically word for word what Russian troll accounts post day after day.

2

u/goochy_86 2h ago

What do you want us to do man? This site is monitored and you want people to what openly admit to stockpiling weapons and ammo? Preparing to fight back, to kill? The people who want to do more than just vote exist Im sure, and I doubt they're dumb enough to talk about it in an open forum like this.

Putin-russia effectively may have a deal with the Trump-US to do exactly what Trump‘s doing for both his election and Putin‘s war machine. Diesel?

It‘s too obvious and fits the recent news on their call…

The MAGA cult is pretty dangerous if you ask me…

u/Taconinja05 4h ago

Exactly my thoughts. Shits gonna get bad

29

Ahh, the "Don't blame me, blame Trump!.. And ignore the fact that Putin is a good friend too," tactic. Classic!

Shame on the US. A nation of traitors and pedophile supporters.

November can't come soon enough!

23

u/TemporarySun314 5h ago

Nothing will change then.

Trump will still president until 2028.

And Americans are probably stupid enough to reelectect him once again 4 years later. Or at very least Vance...

3

u/ux3l 5h ago

As I understood American voters, Trump was elected (among other reasons) because people's lives got worse under Biden. Biden was also elected because how Trump reacted to the Covid pandemic.

Now lives are getting way worse because of Trump's own fuck-ups, so I'm optimistic that the next president will be a Democrat.

Out in the suburbs, I have no idea what to do. I vote. I don’t have any money, I don’t have any power. I do not recognize this place as the country I grew up in. People saying “Make America Great Again” are just the worst kind of people. We have clearly become the bad evil country to the rest of the world. ICE is just the KKK. We are racist, misogynistic, greedy, belligerent, and dumb af. I haven’t got any idea why anyone would think this country is “GREAT AGAIN”

"Starlink is a commercial service owned and controlled by SpaceX. Usage of Starlink is limited to civilian or defensive activities and cannot be used for offensive military action, as doing so would be inappropriate for a commercial company,” Musk said.

If only there were a hundred-plus years of precedent of dozens (hundreds?) of American companies with civilian/commercial operations that also produce trillions of dollars worth of war materiel for offensive operations.

Also, is Grok not both a commercial service and used by the Pentagon for offensive operations?

Not to mention that literally any and everything Ukraine does in this war is (technically) defensive. What a stupid crock of shit.

This shit makes me sick to my core. Ukraine is already struggling, and I‘ve had a bad feeling about this conflict since 2024 (being more and more pessimistic that Russia has the upper hand). Ukraine cannot afford this shit.

Trump and Elon should be tried for treason. The limited Ukrainian manpower is dying because of these absolutely moronic decisions. I will never forgive USA for appointing Trump.

That's basically aiding Russia in genocide.

3

It's reprisal for taking out the bot server farms. It hurt MAGA at a critical time and so this is the revenge. Also, Putin probably had a whisper, since the drones have proven to be potentially very damaging.

It doesn't matter. Musk has been spending more money than some nations GDP to get far right extremists elected across the world. He doesn't get to pretend he isn't complicit.

10

u/backflash 4h ago

Has Starlink been nationalized? Did I miss something?

25

u/Emotional-Buy1932 4h ago

Starshield is a special network controlled by US military not Starlink. It is distinct from starlink's commercial systems.

2

u/buzzsawjoe 3h ago

The article sez Ukraine’s former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said Starlink’s connectivity at speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour (100 miles per hour) is being restored. “Removing Starshield’s speed limit entirely is now critical for Ukraine’s defense,”

The Guardian had a similar article, with the same wierd number: "Terminals travelling at more than 100mph and using a version of Starlink for the military and other national security agencies suddenly lost connectivity, said Serhiy Beskrestnov, in what appeared to be a targeted outage meant to disrupt military operations."

Does anyone have any idea what these are? Satellites in low earth orbit pass overhead at 17500 mph. If these "terminals" are electronic packages strapped to rabbits, those can only run 35 to 45 mph, and that only in short bursts.

Or is this just stupidity? I wonder if reporters think radio messages travel at 100 mph.

3

u/__O_o_______ 3h ago

I think it’s the maximum speed capable of the ground based receiver and transmitter, although specifically why I’m not sure if it’s a software, hardware limitation. Consumer transmitters have a “cap” of moving 100mpg or less or something like that.

3

u/No_Accountant3232 2h ago

It's to prevent fast movers from using star link for guidance systems.

It's an arbitrary limit well below it's capabilities.

3

u/InvestigatorLow3076 3h ago

A starlink reciever normally gets refused service from the system when the system detects the reciever is moving. You pay extra for a non-static account if you want to watch netflix while driving your camper van, but then there still is a maximum speed at which the system refuses communication. 160 kmph appearently, to prevent use in weapon systems. That’s where starshield comes in?

→ More replies (3)

11

u/Sea_Hold_2881 4h ago

When Biden was still around, the US government realized that it could not have its foreign policy set by a private corporation so they negotiated control over some part of starlink resources. This is useful to Musk because it gives him plausible deniability to avoid facing sanctions in other countries.

IOW - this was 100% a Trump decision in the end. If Trump wanted starlink to continue it would have continued.

17

u/nutationsf 4h ago

Starshield is the separate military starlink

5

u/backflash 4h ago

Ah, thanks for the explanation!

8

u/Ashmizen 2h ago

Yeah the whole point of starshield was to take the decision out of a civilian (Elon’s) hands. Elon got a lot of backlash for the decision to geo-zone
Starlink to blacklist Russian controlled territory so Russians can’t use it. This made sense originally when both sides had civilian starlink, but Ukrainian generals were surprised it stopped working when they went on an offensive deep into Russian territory and blamed Elon for “turning off starlink”.

So basically it’s in the US military’s best interest to control it, and it’s in Elon’s best interest to not control it since he will get backlash if he makes the wrong decisions.

Also, starshield meant SpaceX got paid for it (from the US government, not Ukraine) when previously Elon had made civilian Starlink free for Ukraine use.

Elon got a lot of backlash for essentially donating Starlink for Ukraine use and then not updating the geo fencing. Without classified military intelligence he didn’t really have the data to do so anyway, so starshield was better for everyone involved.

That said, we can see that ultimately if the US government wants to throttle support, it’s entirely in their hands now.

7

They are in it for the money and there are zero consequences bar lining their own pockets.

America is sick if this is what it aspires to.

Suffering for profit is basically the projection right now, just so appalled that it’s so blatant and obvious.

12

u/JPFrankenstein 5h ago

America has allied itself with Russia and is the enemy of the West

12

u/quats555 5h ago

This needs to be repeated far and wide.

Starlink is unreliable because any use, privacy, or security depends entirely on an unstable billionaire’s whim.

7

u/Darromear 4h ago

The irony is that one of the main reasons they set up Starshield under the DoD is because Musk fucked around with Ukraine's internet connections before. This was supposed to help prevent these shenanigans.

10

u/grchelp2018 3h ago

starlink was always meant for civilian uses only. there are legal reasons why you don't want to allow that. Plus there is also extra work involved in it. Starshield allows the US govt to do whatever they want without spacex permissions and they can also include all kinds of classified stuff that spacex will not put on their civilian sats.

The only reason I think they may ultimately do an about face here is that it is otherwise going to cost SpaceX a metric boatload in canceled contracts and future opportunities.

2

u/Mewhomewhy 4h ago

Putin decides. Thats obvious to everyone by now.

2

u/ABobby077 3h ago

I wonder how long before some other similar competing low earth orbit satellite secure internet provider(s) are going to start competing with Starlink(???)

2

u/mfb- 2h ago

OneWeb (UK/France/India owned) is operational but with a much smaller number of satellites. They are more focused on aviation and other well-paying customers, but in principle they could be an alternative.

Amazon's Leo should start initial service next year, but that would face the same problem Starlink has. If it works on missiles then it counts as a weapon system that you cannot export it easily. Amazon would also need some agreement with the US government and give that government control over its use on weapons. If the US government restricts the military version of Starlink, it could equally restrict the military version of Leo.

•

u/MyvaJynaherz 50m ago

It's odd that a private citizen owns something so influential in international conflict. A weird side-effect of how powerful modern tech has grown.

Prior centuries would have seen this kind of tech nationalized and controlled due to its ability to serve in such a broad capacity. Now we have to debate whether it's ethical to either allow foreign war-fighters to use the network to coordinate offensive action, or disable service and disproportionately hinder one side of an active conflict.

2

As an American and a Ukrainian, all I can say about this is that I feel America and Ukraine are at war now. Not that Im ignoring the past betrayals but this just, I feel it changes everything and makes me incredibly, incredibly weary. What really is to stop Trump from doing something extreme if it distracts from his failures?
