Iran says it’s ‘counting the moments’ until it can strike U.S. warships; Saudi Aramco facilities attacked

Why are they waiting? Is it because they don't have the ability to do so at this time?
Well I'm waiting until I can collect 1 billion dollars. I can't collect it now because I don't have it, but I'm counting the moments.

The US retreated and moved away from the entrance of the strait because they were too dangerous, so yeah, nothing ridiculous there. This mean the US actually has a big problem if it want to do a ground invasion and the US gun is running out of ammo and the gun has failed to kill the target after thousands of shots.
31
u/rhino369 9h ago
But the US clearly doesn't want a ground invasion. Leadership isn't even pretending as a bluff.

Yeah, but the analogy also works in the sense that the US is someone with a loaded gun who is standing outside the front door of the house preventing the delivery drivers from delivering or picking up packages. The person inside the house can't stay forever inside.

The paper airplanes they attached their firecrackers to won’t glide far enough.
36

Are these the same firecrackers that have seriously damaged a number of our bases in the region? I think your dismissal of the Iranian threat in the region is the same reasoning by decision-makers that resulted in a number of coffins unnecessarily returning to the US.

Over 80 US airframes destroyed.
3
u/ZestyDespacito 10h ago
The stats are padded with expensive but disposable drones. Also, damaged, not destroyed. Many of those airframes were patched up and moved out, and some that were destroyed cannibalized jets that exist to take parts off of to repair/maintain other jets.
I’m not completely dismissing your point, Iran did damage some planes, but the numbers aren’t as shocking when you take into consideration nuance.

Don’t need the US to be afraid, just need to drive up the cost of everything when you’re the defending nation so the party causing problems for everyone gets voted out of office. This administration has done nothing but cost the US taxpayers billions and weaken our alliances. US citizens are worse off in every possible way while Putin’s bitch runs the White House.

59
u/IKAR0S4 10h ago
My understanding, and i could be wrong, is the United states warships are far away from the entrance of the strait of Hormuz, purposely to have more time to detect and down iranian drones or missiles. So it sounds like Iran doesnt have the ability, unless the warships are closer.

u/CommercialHour6660 10h ago
Its because ballistics need to fly at depressed trajectory and maneuver to avoid interception. This limits their range.
Normally ballistics are lofted into space which means no air resistance for most of their journey. US can intercept these with THAAD and SM3/6.
I believe Iran has ballistics that could hit US warships. If they didn't the US would anchor their ships right off the coast instead of hundreds of miles away.
8
u/PartyLikeAByzantine 8h ago edited 8h ago
The issue isn't really ballistics. It's even detecting and tracking a group 400+ miles out in deep water with complete freedom to navigate. If you loose contact for even a minute, your track of the carrier could be off by a mile or more by the time you reestablish. 30kts seems slow and the 1,000 ft length seems big until you start looking at how small that is compared to the area of a circle given X time since last confirmed contact.
You need to maintain the whole kill chain. Iran doesn't have one capable of hitting a CVBG. I don't think Iran is capable of even making initial contact. They might know what sea the US Navy is operating in, but what they know is not precise of timely enough to do anything regardless of what weapons they have.
China might (might!) have built a sufficient kill chain to threaten the USN, and that's about it for non-NATO countries.
7
u/National-Charity-435 10h ago
The US has demonstrated multiple times that it takes weeks to even sink a carrier and merely keeping the strike group on high alert is enough to make a point
Their true motive might not even be to attack a carrier's superstructure
....or they secure a victory by rerouting resources from their true targets
•
u/JuicySpark 38m ago
You know. That's an intelligent perspective. Unfortunately, it's difficult for many to perceive the real reasons of war, and the ideologies behind revolutions because those things are not the norm that they are used to. So we just stop talking about it.
10
u/Delicious-Help4187 10h ago
Striking a US warship would cause mass US casualties. They have already detonated a new class of missiles right next to US warships necessitating that the US warships pull back hundreds of miles farther from the Iranian coast. Iran wants to avoid a US mass casualty event until after the midterms because Iran does not want to turn US public opinion from anti Iran war (with inflation and the huge deficit spending to pay for the war) into a wave of patriotic US revenge seeking on Iran before the midterms. There: that is why they are waiting but still have the capacity to strike US ships.
10
u/ComprehensiveBear576 4h ago
Iran has fired nearly 1000 drones and missiles at our carrier strike groups and independently operating destroyers doing escort duty protecting the southern corridor through Hormuz. 100 percent interception so far in regards to those that directly targeted our warships.
Iran isn’t holding back, They are facing an existential threat where they lost 70 percent of their top leadership, 90 percent of their conventional navy by tonnage, and the majority of their launcher systems and air defense. Iranians want so very badly to hit any of our Warships. They need to Show they are still a threat, and still have any leverage over the strait and that the Us should be willing to give them more in an agreement. they have been unable to hit a single US warship or manned US Navy aircraft or harmed a single US sailor from direct fire yet btw
The skies above US Carrier strike groups are the most heavily defended air spaces on planet earth. The multi level defense of the Aegis system employed from a min of 4 destroyers and a Ticonderoga cruiser plus the air wings on board the carrier itself combined with the ships ability to maneuver make it tough to crack. IRGc would likely need to target them with a salvo 5x larger than any they have already fired even at earlier stages of the war where they had salvos 10 plus missiles at a time before they even lost so much capability. On top of this there are TWO carrier strike groups there that can help cover each other plus a dozen destroyers operating in the strait that can also help intercept.
Now speaking of those destroyers that are performing the escort and zoned defense for the US Southern route that hugs Oman coast. These destroyers are the most vulnerable as they are operating in such close proximity to the Iranian shores. They have way less response time than the strike groups in open ocean. I do worry about a lucky shot that occurs right when a number of tired 19 year old sailors running only monster energy might make a series of mistakes at a bad time. . The longer this goes on for the more likely that is as crews can get complacent especially as Irans capabilities further deteriorate.
Source: have spent thousands of hours in the combat information centers of US warships operating in the strait of Hormuz, planning and training for this very war. Planned flight paths for cruise missiles in the sea as part ships strike team but also have worked strike for fleet command in 3rd fleet planning larger exercises and campaigns.

This is the correct answer. If they restrain themselves and keep the focus on restricting oil production in the region, Americans will solve their Trump problem for them.
1
u/Initial-Constant-645 2h ago
And just how, exactly? Even once Democrats take the house and Senate, there is still no clear path to remove Trump.
1
u/D1RTYFRANK 1h ago
If the Dems take the House and Senate, the Iran war will be over. Congress may not be able to remove Trump or Hegseth since getting a 2/3 majority in the Senate will be tough with the Rs, but other actions can be taken to limit his ability to continue the war and many other things. Trump will be effectively done.
I also have a feeling that Trump (or his followers) will get real reckless in the next few weeks and the fallout from that might even be enough to convince some of the saner Rs that it's time to get off this crazy train. That's probably wishful thinking, but you never know.
•
u/demonica123 1m ago
If the Dems take the House and Senate, the Iran war will be over.
On what terms? The Dems can't just walk away which is half the issue. If Trump could just walk away he already would have. He tried to flake several times since the war started, but Iran wants US capitulation in the Middle East, not just the boats going back home and would continue to attack the US and their allies in the region.
0
u/Snigglybear 6h ago
Iran simply doesn’t have the capacity. If Iran somehow magically hits a war ships of boots on the ground.
3
u/kbotc 6h ago
Iran's kinda been proven to have more capacity and capabilities than the US leadership is willing to admit to the public. Provided the rational actors who studied at West Point and Annapolis are still around, they know what would have to do be done to silence the attacks on the oil infrastructure, but Trump doesn't want the optics of needing 400-500k troops deployed to push the Iranians back away from the coast, and god forbid we actually want to actually invade and capture Tehran, we'd need Iraq to provide a base of operations to us after we just finally left.

The armed response to people touching U.S boats has always been really immense.
I will remind you that the U.S has the most powerful military in the world and our military spending exceeds the combined military budgets of the next six biggest spenders in the world, including china, russia, germany, india. So I don't think you understand. The level of escalation the U.S is capable of will make the attacks on Iran up until this point look like a warning shot.

The US has never been able to cause a surrender just through bombing without using nuclear weapons.
Ground troops are always required.
Now how do you get them to Iran's population centers?
And how do you get enough troops to do so without a draft? Because as soon as kids get drafted and get to come home in body bags instead of going to college the war will end.
→ More replies (2)5
u/Wazer 3h ago
I'm not saying we're going to win with conventional warfare. I'm just saying we're likely going to start killing a lot more people and drop a lot more bombs if Iran attacks U.S ships. That's the escalation, and it can just be way worse than it is. I make no argument that it will be productive. Just bad for everyone.
2
u/Justame13 3h ago
The thing is you can't really escalate much more without ground troops, bombing civilians just to kill them (which is objectively a waste of ammo because attacking civilians to win a war has never worked), or god forbid nukes.
And it isn't like Trump and Hegseth were holding back. Now pre-war stocks are running out, supply chains have been pushed back to the Indian Ocean, and most likely every target worth hitting has been hit.
Personally I think there will be a lot of talk and bluster with ends with Trump lying about winning and firing Hegseth who will go one to day drink and make his millions on MIC boards.
Which is an even bigger screw up because that could have happened before the election. Massie even threw them a slow ball in the bottom of the 9th when they were behind and they didn't swing.

Their combat aircraft composition is limited to 3 dozen Super Hornets, and they aren’t effective enough against Iran’s mobile missile launchers and drones that can be launched off the back of a truck.
If the USA wants control of the Strait and coast they need a ground invasion and occupation

My suspicion is that people are holding off until closer to the midterms. There's about two and a half weeks left; MAGA base is dwindling, but the base he does have is holding on. He's losing support amongst the people who really helped him into power - podcasters and media commentators. Conservative stalwarts have crumbled, and even many at the Daily Wire have been openly hostile.
Iran doesn't have the means necessarily to sink a U.S. warship and a direct attack on a US asset like that could draw the ire and unleash the administration, so I doubt they'd risk it. But creating ambiguity and a dilemma is a problem for the midterms and that's what they need.
6
u/Settra_Rulez 10h ago
Iran is making lots of noise about striking gulf states, unveiling new weapons and capabilities, using better missile targeting, mobilizing women and children to fight to the death, all in the context of a third US carrier group moving to the theater and rumors of the US planning to renew attacks.
This is Iran’s attempt to re establish a form of deterrence given that their anti air systems have been severely damaged and they’ve already closed the strait, though even that is being undone.
2
u/dodgertodger 10h ago
I think you need to look at it more broadly from a political economy lens:
Right now, Trump has a lot of latitude because he has influence over Congress. He has Mike Johnson and John Thune; but, based on current polling, it looks like a Democratic house majority and a toss-up senate. That's bad news for Trump; they can stall bills, trigger investigations, use the Congressional Review Act. Trump has had a hard time passing legislation now with majorities in both houses, but a Democratic House and a tossup is a problem. He's not known to make concessions, so he could wind up with two years of legislative abyss. Even a narrow Republican majority in Senate is tough, they need 60 votes on most items which they won't get.
Iran knows this. They create discord and advance instability, particularly any major action in the lead up to the midterms and they can try and influence the outcome. Trump is against a wall here. He has no way out with Iran; he has no clear plan with Ukraine and Senate Republicans are less incline to support him as support has not yielded results for them.
I think the next two weeks are going to be ugly.
1
u/Settra_Rulez 8h ago
It’s possible that they escalate as a way of creating an October surprise for Trump.
There’s a danger of focusing too much on the US midterms though. Iran has to consider everything from their future relations with their neighbors, the wishes of their benefactors China and Russia, their internal unrest and economy, the various factions within their political system, etc. They likely know that Trump will still be able to wage war against them even if he loses congress. So while it’s a factor in their calculations, I doubt it’s the primary consideration and it certainly isn’t the only one.
It was only a few weeks ago at UNGA that Iran proposed giving Trump a midterms win by opening the strait if the US lifts its blockade. That’s not something they’d do if their overriding concern was to hurt the republicans electorally.
