Unfortunately, it's also become a popular stance in France:

The latest Ifop survey, conducted in February 2026, shows the new balance. A majority of French respondents support a major increase in the defence budget. Yet only 47% now approve the supply of weapons to Ukraine by European countries, down from 65% in March 2022.

Love how these hard right frauds always claim the 'civilisational collapse of Europe' and that 'Europe is being invaded', but when a European country is literally being invaded for wanting to grow closer ties to European values of democracy and liberalism, they suddenly go missing.

It's all just a massive Putin psy ops isn't it?

Traitors.

u/Special-Reaction2029 14h ago

Not just Putin, there is a global network of these creeps; Netanyahu ,Orban, LePen, Farage, Musk, Thiel, Trump, Bannon, Bolsonaro, Millei, AfD/BSW in Germany, the assholes in El Salvador and Colombia. Then you have the secondary cronies like Delcy Rodriquez who are completely ideologically different but are getting filthy rich from the grift and the AI/crypto/social media tech assholes who have their own international slave plantations, kept going by colluding with governments to prevent regulation.

Liberal democracies are simply not capable of dealing with this threat. Their legal systems are too slow and too beholden to monied interests and citizens are too soft/complacent and expect someone else to deal with it.

In retrospect it seems like instead of the West winning the Cold War, they mistook halftime for the game ending.

Authoritarianism, fascism, lite totalitarianism is gaining significant traction. This round, instead of bringing countries behind the iron curtain of the USSR, the authoritarian axis has taken a page from the US’ playbook and are installing friendly regimes in countries the world over.

Further, instead of doing it under the false guise of communism or socialism, the are taking a page from the Nazis and doing it under the false guise of nationalism. The rub being that if it’s an internationally like-minded cohort, then it’s not really nationalism, now is it?

And what’s the west retort in this ideological fight? Maintaining the status quo- which excites no one. More failed neoliberalism, more inequitable capitalism, more hypocritical justice systems and foreign policy.

It feels like the West is fielding half a defense and no offense and getting their ideological asses whooped by the axis of authoritarianism.

82

u/Special-Reaction2029 13h ago

There are many smart people in power in the west, the problem is that they are entirely power/money hungry and are process/systems focused or entirely in it for themselves. So on the one hand, it takes forever for anything to happen which may benefit wider populations that are barely enfranchised, and even when it does, it is watered down. But things happen very quickly when it can make certain people richer or more powerful. When the regular person speaks up and asks for changes to end things actively making their life worse, the process-heads shout them down as reactionaries, and those with money and power support this behaviour because it keeps them in action.

Not sure where this goes but I don't see it ending well for democracies unless they can become more nimble at dealing with threats and those greedy for money and power.

6

u/Shogouki 5h ago

Humanity simply needs limits on how much wealth and power an individual can accrue. Unless nations realize that and make drastic changes I fear we're in for a very bad time...

The amount of people who are completely unaware of the ideological threat of Russia and China is fucking insane. They have no idea about WW2, the Cold War, and the current barrage of cyber attacks and psyops.

These countries are actively trying to claw their way back to power and the amount of people who want to send our entire car industry’s revenue to China for their cheap, government-subsidized electric cars is bewildering.

Now we have the clown in chief buying Iranian diesel from Russia and funding our allies enemies and our own enemy.

118

u/These-Prune-1529 11h ago

I think more and more people are buying Chinese electric cars because American cars are wildly overpriced.

85

u/ShinyHappyREM 9h ago

American cars are wildly overpriced

Overpriced, oversized, overweight, not efficient enough.

4

u/Kryptosis 4h ago

Not to mention barebones. A 30k Chinese car has heated/vented/massaging leather seats, a heads up display on the windshield and paddle shifters. Look at the inside of a Tesla at 3x the cost….

47

u/BUBBISBAR 12h ago

I mean their electric cars are miles better than our own govt funded electric cars lol. You say this as if we don't subsidize and find are own industry's. Their just open about it. We hide it behind bullshit like "freedom" and free market. At the levels your talking about we don't have any more "freedom" or "free market" than China.

I highly disagree. At least here, in France, we have a huge amount of education toward remembering what happened during the 2 world wars, as well as a culture of it. Every town (and we have 36 000 of them) has a list of the people dying during the war and annual events to remember.

We have been fully aware of totalitarism for decades, then internet happened. At some point, most of the informations exchanged between people was done on what, 5 different sites ? Guess who is handling those, and which politics are they pushing toward ?

We did not let it go. A huge amount of people worked hard for decades so that we remember. But somehow, we created a way to forget everything and only think about the last few paragraphs. Which were written by people paid to make us to think their way.

10

u/porscheblack 11h ago

It was never the US versus the USSR, it was oligarchs against the people. And it looks like the oligarchs are winning, first in the USSR, now in the US.

12

u/AshundertheOlivetree 11h ago

The west won a few rounds and then thought they could walk away before the game was over.
Problem was that the CIA made to many mistakes and now the US at a federal level became no different than a fake democracy like Russia.

In retrospect it seems like instead of the West winning the Cold War, they mistook halftime for the game ending.

This is assuming the west's motivations during the cold war were benevolent. I would say that colonialism in general, South American "banana republics," installing the Shah of Iran and the Iran-Contra Affair along with everything it was connected to casts doubt that some form of egalatarian democratic enlightenment was the goal.

I guess I could just sum that last paragraph up to "geopolitics were not so benevolent in practice because greed motivates people to rise to the top."

Don't look for logic and idological or political consistency here.

The only things that are consistent here are that these people are driven by a hunger for power, while being supported by Russia.

You can apply that to all right wing movements, from Trump to the AfD, from Nigel Farage to Le Pen, Orbán or Vucic. It's the same shit, with the same common threads.

18

u/SuccotashAsleep6459 13h ago

Yeah, I also love how one of Putin’s main justification for invasion is “fighting Nazis” in Ukraine, while they act like Nazis in war, and prop up all kinds of Nazis all over Europe.

7

Massive stupidity and cowardice. All the Russians need to do is a gentle prod.

190

u/TLKv3 13h ago

Anyone on the far right are just hypocritical gaslighters.

"WE NEED TO END IMMIGRATION!"

Proceeds to allow large amounts of only rich, white immigrants in

"DEMOCRATS ARE GOING TO KILL US ALL!"

Proceeds to incentivize and fund groups that execute civilians in streets

"WE CANNOT ALLOW CHINA TO BEAT US!"

Proceeds to fuck supply chains and gas prices so their own country can't supply anything to counter China's production

"I AM NOT A PUTIN-RUSSIAN PUPPET!"

Proceeds to do everything they can to stop aiding Ukraine from being invaded by Russia and allows Putin to bully whoever he wants

All of them. They are all Russian funded traitors to their individual countries. Everyone should be rioting and yanking these fucks out of their offices and tossing them into prisons globally. You want democracy? Then rip the fucking bandaid off and imprison these treasonous fucks everywhere being blatantly funded by them. That and seize every asset that right wing techbro oligarchs own too. Musk, Zuck, Gates, etc. should all be imprisoned too.

For me the worst is free speech, Small gouvernement and economic responsibility. They are the absolute worst for all of this.

12

u/sjbennett85 9h ago

Free speech: freedom to hate without being held accountable

Small government: small enough to fit into the pockets of everyone they dislike in order to oppress those who go stand in their way, small enough to weasel out of any accountability

Economic responsibility freedom: the freedom to flip economic switches to maximize the person wealth of those who run the controls and exert pains to those they wish to oppress

41

u/Curious-Effort984 14h ago

it seems like Europe didn't learn from WW2 we never built a strong domestic democracy we just relied on foreign favourable situation but now that US and Russia are actively on the same page we're really being exposed at this moment in time just how weak many European countries are politically

23

u/SpareBee3442 13h ago

You might be forgetting that quite a number of European countries were trapped in the Soviet block after WW2. There was not the opportunity to engage with them as there exists now. You do have a point though that European political cohesion should be much stronger than it is. Sadly, its easy to derail with things like Brexit, funding of far-right parties (now jointly funded by Russia AND the Trump administration - who would have believed that 10 years ago). Mass immigration has given the enemies of liberal democracies a tool to chisel away at cohesion.

It's like this, the US wants to weaken Europe and get some people rich in the short term. Europe should defend against it, but that is hard, costs money and needs time. People are stupid and don't want hars things in the short term, so politicians like this use this, advocate for the same things the big powers like US, Russia and China want. They get no pushback, het actually supported, make themselves rich as well, and the people suffer, because they are too dumb to realize what is coming in the future. Instead of bracing for a harsher future where the US is not our good friend anymore, we try to avoid any trouble and get into even bigger trouble because of it. What I just don't get is why all of this. Can't be only Trumps stupidity. Maybe the northern routes, maybe AI future, whatever, I don't get it.

They do a lot of things poorly, but that sure ain't one.

Democracies are inherently weaker to defend against propaganda because ideas of any kind are more free to flow. It's both a good and a bad concept but in our time it's been pushed close to the limit negatively.

149

u/Khaldara 13h ago

Kneecapping education and critical thinking while flooding people with this disingenuous garbage is a surefire way to increase the success rate of propaganda as well. That’s not even touching the massive conglomerates like Fox that spent weeks creaming their underoos over a shirtless photo of Putin

37

u/kitten-n-blue 13h ago

Yep, subversion of democracy like this works because we’re also deliberately cutting funding for education and the arts, which in turn gives us a population that is media illiterate and easily manipulated.

The KGB defect said all this was ongoing back in the 80's or whatever... Yuri something.

Paraphrasing "When you let minorities talk for majorities..." Pair that with their use of social media warfare. They're a founding member of most us vs them rethorics you come across. It's so simple online because you can pretend you're 2 million people while in reality only a few crazees are in on it. But online you can make a whole lot of noise this way.

An example of this is anything trans, which is also the go-to division of the sitting US govt. Tiny percentage of the population. Huge footprint, and the online presence is massive and it's been a perfect storm. Then think about everything that's not so black and white.

I've noticed my instagram algorithm practically switches between extremely positive or negative - and then lands somewhere these people meet and the comment sections are 50/50 hate or love it. Most people should know damn well at this point that a big chunk of those comments aren't real people at all. Blatantly obvious if you're early. Note: I never like or comment on anything, and regularly "wipe" my algorithm it almost always ends up in some divicive camp.

There's a great documentary about russias propaganda that I for the life of me can't remember the name of. Like 1.5 - 2 hours long and brittish narration.

9

u/mjb2012 8h ago edited 7h ago

Just to add to that, I’ve been noticing that posting a nuanced, reasonable, or tolerant take on anything is a great way to attract a flurry of downvotes and flippant dismissals, often after getting some initial upvotes. It’s as if someone really doesn’t want any kind of respectful dialogue gaining traction. The only acceptable points of view are opposite extremes.

The biggest problem with democracies is that the dumbest motherfuckers you can imagine have the same voting rights as anyone else.

6

u/EconomicRegret2 9h ago

It wouldn't have been much of a problem if family, society, education and media structures were healthy. And people didn't segregate geographically based on intelligence/education.

Instead, families and society are atomized ("rugged individualism"), inequality is extremely excessive, educational standards are declining, and big parts of the news industry is actively trying to manipulate and deceive people, social media is even worse. Finally, the West is segregated by intelligence/education levels (i.e. intelligent/educated people tend to flock to the same geographical areas, leaving behind the "less" intelligent/educated ones with fewer intellectual leadership/guidance).

Doesn't help that modern tools to spread information are actually better at spreading misinformation either.

Corporate control of the "public square" and bot farms are doing untold damage to Western liberal democracies.

23

u/Key-Demand-2569 12h ago

For all our optimism about free and unfettered access to information when the internet was growing rapidly, not enough people (very understandably) really accounted for the hard limit to people’s ability to process information.

Even if everyone was very literate and cared a lot about honesty and accuracy in the things they read or stuff they used to form opinions about things beyond their daily life (which absolutely isn’t the case)… it’s just too much noise.

That alone is a very effective tool for the right people.

How big of a chunk can you carve out of the people who care if at some point they’re just exhausted of trying to keep up with political and social issues?

7

u/lego_joker 8h ago

Doesn't this totally negate Russia's claim that they invaded Ukraine because they were fascists? When a fascist says she won't support them.

346

u/Artex301 14h ago

You can't "gotcha" fascists. They'll spew bullshit after contradicting bullshit.

Anyone who believes Russia's pathetic excuse for invading Ukraine is either living under a rock or utterly delusional.

19

u/SadFeed63 13h ago

I'd even wage that a lot of attempts to gotcha them (which usually involve trying to hold them to their contradictions) end up helping them, unfortunately.

To give a big ticket example, let's go with Trump saying he's gonna be the no wars president. Obviously that was greatly aided by the media being super credulous to his clear lies, but I think there was a double whammy there in the way people try to gotcha his hypocrisy. What I mean is, if he does something contradictory and we, people trying to stand against him, all go "what happened to the peace president?!" "Isn't this guy the no wars president?" etc, we are, I fear to the idiots who don't really pay attention, just furthering this idea that him saying he was supposed to be the peace president actually meant something. It didn't. The thing that happened to the supposed peace president is that it was a lie that never was, and I think some amount of snark needs to be sacrificed to make that crystal clear.

I know, you know, those of us who don't have mush for brains know that "what about the peace president?! What happened?" is supposed to be exposing his hypocrisy, but we're not the ones who need to read it. There's folks that sadly don't get it, and I think it can read to those folks as if everyone is acting like there was a point where he really and truly meant it. Then they're gonna believe it was a possibility. If they believe it's a possibility, then they can unfortunately believe MAGA loons telling them "those libs are lying, he didn't mean it that way, he really is the peace president" or whatever horseshit.

As you say, no point in trying to gotcha them or be clever about it, or show off biting wit. Just call it clear bullshit and give nothing at all to the idea that they mean those more positive words they're trying to use to trick folks.

6

u/jimbarino 12h ago

Fascism has absolutely no commitment to consistent reality. Doublethink is 100% the right term. They freely and truly believe that Trump is a president of peace and also that he needed to invade Iran because doing so gives them power and justification. The fact that this is an inconsistent ideology has no bearing whatsoever.

→ More replies (1)

27

u/jimbarino 12h ago

You can't "gotcha" fascists.

People need to get this through their heads. The appeal of fascism is that you get to lie and do whatever you want. “Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.”

Someone explain why far right people love russia?

94

u/namitynamenamey 11h ago

Three main reasons:

1) They love isolationism on top of nationalism, so anything that stops helping a country in need is good in their books. Russia is asking everyone to stop helping a country in need (ukraine), and they think it good.

2) They respect russia as an example of a country that displays the right kind of authority and moral values, who is brutal to their enemies and firm with their citizens, while large and powerful. They want that.

3) Money. They get money from these people.

29

u/ChiefsHat 10h ago

Russia’s proven itself to be a paper tiger time and again. How can it be considered powerful?

16

u/letskeepthiscivil 10h ago

Some people measure power by how much misery and suffering you can cause to others.

9

u/GreasyToken 8h ago

Lmao that's anti power.

Nietzsche explains it well.

Fear is the weakest form of power and love is the greatest.

People who fear you might obey but they will always be looking for a way to fuck you over or stab you in the back.

People who love you? Ffs you don't even have to tell them to do anything, they'll be eager to help you without you even needing to ask.

Don't know why CHUDs are so obsessed with the weakest form of power. I guess because lots of them are weak at their core.

Some stupid far-right voters see Russia as some sort of "Anti-woke safe haven" and see Putin as a safeguard of conservative values.

But most righ wing voters don't care. Right wing politicians are however on Putin's payroll, and want to mimic Putin's regim.

26

u/FaunusGamer 12h ago

I think their main goal is to just dismantle the EU and probably Nato

17

u/Blackwolf245 11h ago edited 11h ago

Conspiracy time: Orban visited Putin just 2 weeks before the Russian invasion in 2022. I bet that Le Pen, Orban and all the right wing party leaders in Europe were told by Putin that he is going to invade Europe. All these airspace violations and report from the eastern countries fall in line with this. All these pro russian politicians were convinced, that if they help dismantle the eu and nato, they get to be the leaders of their respective countries, acting as Putin's local governors, and they also think that Europe can't stand against a Russian invasion and are afraid. Trump either knows and is onboard, or he just too fucking dumb and being played, but either way, Trump doesn't give a fuck about Europe, or any of their own allies.

Edit: oh, and Also Orbán Balázs, Orbán Viktor's advisor said in an interview that Hungary wouldn't fight a Russian invasion (this was in 2024 when Orbán was still in power)

Because they’re financed and supported by russia.

13

Because russia is funding them all, supporting them all, and treasounously aiding them all. They figured out a new, modern, digital method of war wherein they dont have to win militarily, where they are weaker, but through election interference and funding little proxy parties in adverse countries. It’s treason and when it all comes to light, i think it’ll be earth shattering. I also believe it is heavily tied to the Epstein files

The world turning on Ukraine is a fucking disgrace that needs to be met with utter disgust and contempt from the people of this planet.

28

u/Cobra8472 12h ago

Disgrace is not strong enough of a word, alas I don't think think one exists. I'm absolutely heartbroken by the mask-off moment supposedly enlightened human culture and civilization is having.

No amount of social media propaganda is enough for anyone to be pro Russian; it's an excuse as hollow as Nazis burning Jews because of something they read in the newspaper and should be treated similarly.

20

u/Pabstincanada 11h ago edited 10h ago

You are unfortunately spot on, as Marine Le Pen's political party was founded by people who actively supported the extermination of Jewish people. Yes, litteral Nazis. Litteral Nazis are leading the polls in France. These are dark times.

Honestly. The war in Ukraine has been going on for so long that it's not brought up very often by medias and it's not so much in the mind of people. RN is all about France first and national priority. We've been hearing for 3 years that we need to save 30B and now 60B a year to stay afloat.

So... she's probably right (unusual for her) thinking that her voter base does not support funding Ukraine. Or at the very least they don't care enough to scare them off.

86

u/GaryLifts 14h ago

Shes leading in the polls though.

15

u/coconutpiecrust 13h ago

Huh. So they finally are getting what they want, huh? One thing you gotta give to fascists is that they never waver or give up. It takes them decades of dedicated work and money to get the awful, putrid, repulsive things that they want, but they get them nonetheless.

23

u/JR21K20 14h ago

Doesn’t Le Pen have to form a coalition though? If she’s the largest party and the others don’t want to work with her she won’t get to form a government

46

u/No_Team_6326 13h ago

No, France has a different system than most of Europe. They elect their president through direct voting over two rounds where the winning candidate has to win over 50% in the second round. She's leading in the polls to be ahead after the first round, and also leading to win the second round. This would make her President, and able to decide all matters of foreign policy, which is under the total authority of the President.

Then there are parliamentary elections that are completely separate, where she may or may not have her party as the largest party to form a government. France has this system called 'cohabitation' where the government could be from a different party than the President, this would make it awfully difficult for her to rule, especially on domestic matters, but foreign policy remains under the President.

7

u/Rannasha 13h ago

Parliamentary elections are separate from presidential elections, but they happen not long after each other. It is extremely common for the party that won the presidency to also win the parliamentary elections, but it's not a certainty.

The president is elected by a two round popular vote system, but members of the national assembly are elected in their constituency (also with a two round vote). Depending on the geographical distribution of voters for each party, it's possible that the winner of the presidency doesn't gain a majority in the national assembly even if everyone votes for the same party in both elections.

7

u/Chandelurie 13h ago

And it's not just France either. The same thing is happening all over the EU.

42

u/U-47 14h ago

The nature of the elections in EU is not like amerika. It's not a binary choice it's a respresentative democracy. The only problem that can present itself is if two extreme choices will get into the run off. That would be problematic. But even then there are plenty of safeguards in the EU and France itself.

It's interesting to see far-right parties gain steam across France, UK and Germany after Europeans shat on Americans for letting Trump come to power.

Guess that's the general trend amongst Western democracies.

62

u/BiologyJ 13h ago

It's a world threat. What you're seeing is that wealth inequality and cronyism in foreign lands can impact your internal politics. This is a real threat to democracy globally.

Even when your country has no worries. If Russia becomes a oligarch run wasteland and consolidates money in 20 people's hands. Those 20 people then leave the wasteland and go off into the rest of the world, using their money to influence the politics there to support more of what made them money. The best bet is rooting out fascism and cronyism everywhere it's found.

It's important to remember that people are influenced by what they see and hear, and we know how hard the bot farms are working to influence people on every social media platform.

u/oratree 13h ago

Europeans shat on Americans

That's the European you read and see. I noticed on forums and people who go out and are more social, they tend to shit on Trump.

The problem are the people who are more isolate and spend hours dooming on social media, just watching videos, reading comments and not participate actively in forums or any other social gathering.

4

u/Russian_Turtles 8h ago

In my experience, Europeans are generally incapable of separating everyday life in the U.S. from politics, period. That's sorta the crux of the issue.

I won’t, but it’ll be so goddamn tempting.
