Mod Announcement Welcome to /r/WindowsHelp, here are some guidelines for requesting assistance

Welcome to /r/WindowsHelp, the subreddit for you to ask questions and get support for issues related to Microsoft's Windows family of operating systems. Please give this a quick read before posting.

This subreddit is only for help related to Microsoft Windows and its built in software, like Edge, Store, PowerShell, and so on. Issues about 3rd party software like Chrome or Steam should be posted in their subreddits or /r/techsupport. Also, this is not a hardware subreddit, so issues like your hard drive is not detected would need to be posted in /r/techsupport. General discussions, news, artwork, and so on should be in /r/Windows, /r/Windows10 or similar subreddits. Malware/virus removal has been covered extensively in this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/33evdi/suggested_reading_official_malware_removal_guide/

Posts are required to have a moderately descriptive title. Submissions with vague titles like just "help me" will be removed. You don't need to write an essay in the title, but everyone should have a rough idea what you are asking about before even clicking the link. Titles like "I'm encountering System Exception errors when launching Photos" or "20H2 update won't install" are acceptable, but the more details the better.

The body of your post should also be as detailed as possible. We are not mind readers, and nobody is going to want to play 20 questions. Help us help you, your post should include:

  • Your full Windows version, which on Windows 10 is listed in the Settings app under System -> About, it will be the OS Build number.

  • Details about your device, like the hardware specifications.

  • Any recent changes you have made, such as installing/uninstalling software or accessories. Any updates you have installed, tools you have ran, or anything else you think may be relevant.

  • Include details on your error messages and error codes, these are critical to figuring out the issue.

  • Tell us what you have already tried to fix this. Any tools you have ran, and changes you tried, and so on. I know it is a meme at this point, but seriously, reboot your computer, it often fixes things!

  • If possible, include screenshots or video. If you are including screenshots, try to use screenshot software like Snip & Sketch tool built into Windows 10, then you can upload them to a free image host like https://imgur.com to put in your post. We understand that using screenshot software isn't always an option, you can take photos with a phone or similar device, but please be sure to check to make sure everything is in focus and is legible.

This subreddit follows the same rules as /r/Windows, you can view the full rule page here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows/wiki/rules

The TL;DR of the rules is be polite, helpful, and don't encourage piracy.

Windows 11 How do I stop Windows Update from trying to install old AMD Driver?

Thumbnail

Windows 11. For whatever reason, Windows Update wants to install Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. Driver Update (32.0.21030.2001) which looks like a really old AMD Driver. I have a 9070 XT GPU and I'm running the most recent AMD driver. I don't want to overwrite the existing driver with this older driver. I can't shut my PC down or restart it without installing this update.

I've already tried to block these driver updates in regedit. See screenshots.

What do I do? Why is Windows doing this to me? Relevant screenshots attached.

I’m on windows 11 home

Windows XP / Older Windows Millennium booting problem

One day I was shutting down my old Windows ME computer. I clicked "shut down" several times, but each time it simply played the startup sound and did nothing else. Then I accidentally pulled the power cable, forcing a shutdown. When I turned it on again, I had to use Safe Mode. After successfully booting into Safe Mode, I restarted the computer. It had no issues until it came to a screen that had the Windows ME icon and froze there, eventually forcing me to pull the power cable, after which it boots into Safe Mode and repeats the process.

All this is most likely my fault, but if possible, help would still be greatly appreciated.

version/build number is 4.90.3000

didn't get a picture of it, but it says "warning: windows did not finish booting on last attempt, default configuration used" when it is plugged in

Windows 11 Finally decided to update to windows 11. PC battery now lasts half the usual time and the fan is always rumourus AF

So basically i was one of the latee joiners of windows 11, a month ago I recieved a message that the security support expired so I finally decided to leave windows 10 behind and update to 11

Problem is, now my battery, who was usually lasting up to 5-6 hours while performing everyday tasks (surfing online, rewatching recorded lessons, taking notes on Drive while listening to podcasts, or music in the background) can't go more than 3 hours now, and the moment I turn on windows 11, the cooling fan starts running fast, making a pretty high noise which is difficult to not notice, and it doesn't stop until I turn it off. With windows 10 instead, this only happened while performing high resource tasks such as playing games, as usual.

PC INFORMATION

acer Aspire 3-15, with ryzen 7 5700 series with integrated Radeon TM graphics with 496 MB. 16 GB of RAM. Windows 11 version is 25H2, build number 26200.9711, installed on september 28th

The PC is currently less then 2 years old (will be 2 at the end of november) and when I bought it I had all my storage from previous computer cloned here in a new SSD M2.

I've already tried all the suggestion they give you make the battery last longer (turn on battery saving, lower luminosity etc, those 7 steps W11 tells you to do).

Keep in mind that before this, I've never had to use it while recharging because the battery was just more than enough, unless I was playing games online basically. Now this happens wuite more often, as you may have immagined.

Did anyone else experienced this? and how did you solved this problem? or is my battery just fucked?

Windows 11 Win11 says something is wrong with accessing my pin, also password will not work.

Win11 Beelink SER8 mini computer

Started having a DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION that would reboot the computer multiple times for the first hour the computer was on. Then would run fine rest of the day. Figured some sort of AMD driver problem, might or might not be releated.

I went to turn it on 2 days into this happening and at the log in it says something is wrong with the pin and can't use it. So I try the password. It tells me incorrect password. I reset my password on microsoft, made sure the computer was in my profile (also gave the computer internet to make sure it could check for the "new" password)

Nothing, still says wrong password and you still can't enter a pin. I'm at a loss of what to do.

Happy to wipe and reset the whole thing. But wanted to see if I was missing something before heading that way that may be a simple fix.

Windows 11 Windows defender flagging every thing as virus

So, last month, I went on vacation and left my laptop with my younger brother. Unfortunately, he downloaded some suspicious files, and afterward, the icons of most of my applications changed to the same blue icon (I'm on win 11).

I ran a Microsoft Defender Offline scan. The scan itself took about 10 minutes and it took almost the entire day to finish dealing with the detected threats. When it was done, my laptop rebooted I discovered that the .exe files for almost all the programs I had installed myself, including Steam, WinRAR, VLC, PowerISO, and Chrome, had been removed.

I tried reinstalling the programs, but every time I shut down and restarted my laptop, Windows Security flagged them as viruses and quarantined or deleted their executable files again.

Thinking my system was seriously compromised, I wiped my drive and performed a clean installation of Windows 10. Everything seemed fine initially, but the problem returned the next day. I then upgraded to Windows 11, hoping it would resolve the issue, but the same thing happened again.

At this point, I'm not sure what to do. What could be causing this problem, and how can I permanently fix it? Could it be malware that survives a Windows reinstall, or is there another possible explanation?

Windows 10 None of my launchers will connect to the internet…? Explain it to me like I’m 5.

For some context, I had to completely wipe my whole laptop because of how old it was (haven’t opened it since 2025) and updated everything.

I can’t update to 11 due to my laptop not having support for it.

I have a thinkpad x1 converse(?) if that helps?

Both before and after wiping my laptop and resetting everything, I still cannot get any of my launchers to work.

At first I could open Steam, but now Steam just won’t open at all and will instead give me “Steam needs to be online to update. Please confirm your network connection and try again.” Despite being hooked up to my hotspot.

Now I do have this hotspot from the library, however it has had no problems working with my VR headset & my other devices.

The hot spot is right next to the laptop too so I’m unsure of what the problem is.

This is happening with all of my launchers, happened with my discord, voice mod, Roblox, even my EA app.

I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong and I simply just want it to get working again so I can play the sims 4.

I haven’t gotten any error messages besides “fatal error” from Steam.

All steps I have taken so far are also seen in this video here except for the last part he does. https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTyENw3Lm/

I would like to also note that it is connected to the internet as I am able to search things up and download stuff, I just can’t get the launchers to work.

OS build is 19045.6466 if that helps?

Please explain this to me as if I’m 5 btw, thank you.

Windows 11 Windows 11 home laptop disables video when under a tab but still maintains audio

Pretty much what it says, it can be any video not just from youtube, but as soon as any sort of video player is behind (not minimized) another window the video player itself turns off while maintaining audio. Its fine if im listening to music however whenever i try to stream videos to other people they cant see the stream whenever i put the video under another tab. To be clear, I am NOT minimizing the tab, i am just putting it behind another tab. Thanks in advance :D

Windows 11 Wifi connection trash after recent update

I'll start off by saying i'm not very tech savvy regarding pc's. I updated to the most recent windows update, and my wifi has become super spotty to downright not working. I tried uninstalling the update, update drivers, resetting adapters, and NOTHING is working! I run a 3080 and an intel 7 chip with 32 gigs ram 1 tb ssd. I genuinely need a laymans-style explanation on what to do, because i'm starting to feel like I will have to replace my entire pc Edit: Skytech prebuild

Windows 11 Windows 11 marks EVERY Spanish word as misspelled despite having Spanish installed. Is there a system-wide fix?

Hi everyone,

I work in Poland, and my company provided me with a Windows 11 laptop originally configured for Poland, but with English as the display language.

I'm Spanish and work with both English-speaking and Spanish-speaking clients, so I regularly switch between English and Spanish.

I have both languages installed in Windows, and I switch keyboard layouts using Win + Space. Everything works perfectly in terms of typing, including Spanish characters like ñ and accents.

The problem is spell checking.

Whenever I write in Spanish, EVERY word gets underlined in red as incorrect. This happens across multiple applications, including Outlook, Teams, Word, ChatGPT, Trello, internet forums and other web-based tools.

For example, I can be using Outlook in English, switch my keyboard to Spanish and start writing an email in Spanish, but the spell checker still treats everything as English.

It's incredibly annoying because the entire email becomes covered in red underlines, making it difficult to identify actual spelling mistakes. I've even sent emails containing typos because they were practically impossible to distinguish.

What I've already tried:

  • Installed the Spanish language pack through Windows Settings.
  • Checked and changed the Windows language, typing, spelling and autocorrect settings.
  • Installed an additional Spanish language package provided by my company's Microsoft Software Center. (My whole laptop changed to Spanish now...)
  • Switched between English and Spanish using Win + Space.

Nothing has fixed the problem globally.

I managed to fix Outlook by manually changing its proofing language, but the same problem remains in other applications.
Interestingly, I also use a MacBook with English and Spanish, and I don't have this problem there.

My question: Is there a way to configure Windows 11 to recognise both English and Spanish automatically when typing, across applications?

Or do I seriously have to configure the spell checker individually in every application I use?

I don't mind keeping Windows and my applications in English. I just want to write in both languages without everything being marked as incorrect.

I spent 2 hours with ChatGPT and it couldn't figure it out.

Thanks!

Am I the only one having this problem? Idk what the heck Windows or Microsoft or whoever the heck does these freaking updates but they botched up BIG TIME. After the most recent update of my computer last night, suddenly my computer is BUGGY AS HELL! My first daily dose of Youtube become unwatchable for 20-30 minutes, my computers bugging all over the place, and you know the famous game of hearthstone? That infamous game that usually never has problems besides what people rage about when losing? ITS LAGGING LEFT AND RIGHT EVERY SEVERAL SECONDS! IT HAS NEVER LAGGED ONCE FOR ME BEFORE THE UPDATE T_T! If anyone knows how to fix this issue lemme know, and for anyone who has yet to download this update, DONT DO IT. Just force shutdown the computer manually if you can or whatever. Honest to god have no idea what the heck they did but it's made my computer awful.

Windows 11 Windows only boots via the boot menu

Yesterday, I ran into an issue: when I turn on the computer normally, it gets stuck in an infinite boot loop. At the same time, all USB ports become inactive, which prevents me from accessing the BIOS. However, if I completely cut power to the PC and then restore it, the POST screen appears—at that point, I can enter the BIOS and select the boot drive. The strange thing is that the correct drive is already set as the primary boot device (boot priority #1), and there is no Windows installation on any of the other drives. Both the BIOS and the drive firmware are up to date. On my ASUS Prime Z690 D4 motherboard, I’ve already tried resetting the CMOS, moving the NVMe drive to a different slot, and updating the chipset drivers—I’ve exhausted every solution I could find online, including suggestions from AI. Also disabled fast start in BIOS and Windows. It’s odd that this problem started immediately after I replaced the thermal paste and installation of the PC speaker; I didn’t change anything else. My troubleshooting revealed that the system only boots after a "hard start" (holding down the power button for 5–10 seconds), and even then, it doesn't always work. A standard restart via the Start menu just leads to an infinite boot loop and a black screen. Has anyone encountered something like this? If so, how did you manage to fix it? Thanks in advance.

Windows 11 windows boot manager has been blocked by the current security policy fix (Lenovo)

A few days ago i have try to install Riot Client but its appear an error: " secure boot disabled" So i unabled the secure boot option in bios menu, but after save & exit, the screen:  "Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed. Insert Recovery Media and Hit Any Key. Then Select Boot Manager to choose a new Boot Device or to Boot Recovery Media" appeared

  1. I choose the only boot on the list

  2. Then hit Enter, the screen change to: Windows Boot Manager has been blocked by the current security policy.

  3. Hit the enter again with the same boot, a loop started and i stucked with that screen: Windows Boot Manager has been blocked by the current security policy

And i disabled secure boot, everything back to normal. But i want to try Valorant so much, this error is kinda complicated to solve alone, because i'm not a computer expert.

My laptop is: Lenovo Ideapad 5 Pro 14ACN6 ( I just bought this laptop at a secondhand store)

Windows 11 Windows Search disappeared over night, Windows + F doesn't work, and my Start -> Search-bar doesn't let me type anything?

Thumbnail

I woke up this morning with my computer being extremely laggy for no reason, this was a bit concerning as this PC is about 2 or so months old, and I bought it from Costco. I decided the best action was to restart the computer and hope for the best. It was restarting, however it had some issues where it was basically frozen and doing nothing, so during the restart process (which maybe I shouldn't have done) I pressed the power button and turned it off. It opened Windows successfully after turning it back on, and feels responsive. However, I have now run into something I didn't ever expect to be dealing with, that being that effectively most native windows search bars either don't exist, do nothing, or don't even let me type in them. I originally thought that maybe it had to do with the fact that I used RevoUninstaller 2 months ago when I was setting up my PC, and maybe removed something I shouldn't, but I've been restarting my computer pretty normally over these last 2 months, and it hasn't done anything weird.

Here are some screenshots, I'd really love some help getting this working. Also, I know I said that my computer wasn't slow before, but there really is some weird stuff going on, like some Windows apps (Like Photos) don't work quite right, and are extremely slow to open.

Here are my device specifications. I also tried to repair my Windows version with some trouble shoot tests, and reset windows without removing files option (cannot remember the exact name).

Windows 11 10/14/26 Windows Update - PC completely dead after Windows “Update then shutdown”

Hey everyone, looking for some validation on a hardware failure that just happened today.

My system was working perfectly fine this morning while playing War Thunder. Before leaving, a standard Windows update popped up, so I hit "Update and Shut Down" and left.

When I came back at 6:00 PM tonight, the PC was completely unresponsive.

The front case power button did absolutely nothing. Strangely, my keyboard and USB accessories (Elgato, Arzopa portable monitor) were lighting up via standby power, but the actual PC internals (CPU fan, case fans, motherboard lights) were completely dead.

I spent tonight troubleshooting and ruled out a soft-brick/sleep loop:

Done a full CMOS clear/battery reset.

Attempted a deep capacitor power drain (holding the power button while unplugged).

Removed my **RX 7900 XT** GPU to get clear access to the **Asus PRIME B650M-A AX II**motherboard front panel headers.
Attempted to jump-start the PC by manually bridging the PWR_SW pins on the F_PANEL header with a flathead screwdriver (with wall power verified active).

**Result:** Absolute silence, no fan spin.

**The Smoking Gun:**
I finally pulled the main **24-pin motherboard power cable** and performed a paperclip jump test on pins 4 and 5 (PS_ON and Ground) with the wall outlet plugged in and the PSU switch turned ON.

**The fan inside the power supply box stayed completely still and did not spin at all.**

It looks like the sudden drop in voltage when Windows forced the shutdown at noon completely killed the main 12V rail on my PSU, though it managed to keep a tiny bit of 5V standby power flowing to the USBs before dying completely.

Thankfully, it looks like the PSU sacrificed itself and saved my GPU and motherboard.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Windows 10 Taskbar Stays Over 'Fullscreen Windowed' Game, But Only With 2 Monitors

I recently got an old monitor as a second screen and it appears as 'monitor 1' in the Windows display settings while my 'main display' is monitor 2. This works fine in all but one situation, playing a game in windowed fullscreen mode. The normal taskbar behavior for games in windowed fullscreen is the taskbar disappearing until the Windows key or ALT+TAB is pressed, or if another app is over the game, however with both monitors connected, the taskbar stays over the game.

I need my games in fullscreen windowed mode as I mod a number of games (singleplayer) and a lot of mods using cheat engine for example need me to be able to see the game and the mod menu/list at the same time. The taskbar blocks important information on the bottom of the game, as some mods use the bottom of the game to show "mod: enabled"-like text.

As far as I know switching my main monitor to 'monitor 1' fixes the taskbar issue, but 'monitor 1' is my second monitor and it's 1024 x 768 and tiny, meaning the taskbar icons won't appear properly (I have a lot of pinned apps). I can't switch the order of the cables in my GPU as it only has 1 HDMI port (my main monitor) and 3 'Display Port' connections. The HDMI is considered the 3rd connection in the display order with 1,2, & 4 being Display Port, however connecting my second monitor to the 4th port still displays it as 'monitor 1'. My second monitor uses a VGA to Display Port converter to connect to my GPU (RTX 3050). Also my CPU can't use the motherboard display ports. I had this problem about 5-6 years ago, and fixed it but Idk how and I've since changed PCs and monitors.

Things I've tried:

Reinstalling the display drivers
Deleting/Resetting the display settings in the registry

If there's a way to switch what Windows considers to be 'monitor 1' through Windows itself, I think that would fix my issue.

Image to show the size difference between my monitors:

PC Information important to this issue:
OS: Windows 10 Pro (Build 19045)
GPU: RTX 3050 (Zotac Gaming)
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5500 (No Graphics Support)

Windows 11 OneDrive doesn't let me remove desktop from the backup, is there any way to forcefully shut OneDrive down or another method?

A few days ago Windows put that "Finish setting up your PC" (even if I did that a long time ago) and without knowing it put OneDrive to backup my computer again. I turned OneDrive off the day I got my laptop so this is reallly annoying. I did the normal fix which is to go to the settings and remove the folders from the backups, and I did that for every folder, but when I did it for desktop it crashed. Now every time I go to the same setting to turn it off for desktop, it tells me it's already off when it still has the red x on it. I'm hoping there's another way to fix this, and hopefully just get rid of OneDrive all together too but I really don't want to lose my desktop files as it has all my apps. Any help is appreciated! I have an Asus Vivobook 15.
