Books Guide to editions of the Witcher books

This is a little project I compiled in last days, being an expansion on my previous covers of the Last Wish post. I wanted to list, and sort, all editions of books in the Witcher series, published in various languages (30 + Polish). Result of that ended in shape of a PDF file (6 MB) - which you can now browse and download!

Here is a sneak peek, if you can't right now (e.g. mobile), but want to see what is inside.

Take in mind, that it's still a WIP (supposed to by updated in future, at least once a year - as we can expect more editions after Netflix boosted series' popularity). So if you have anything to add or correct - please do! E.g. I miss many covers' artist names.

Besides that, here are some specific questions:

  • Which editions are sold in English-speaking countries except UK & USA?. I suppose American editions are sold in Canada, but what about e.g. Australia, South Africa, Singapore, New Zealand?

  • Are there any pirated editions, other than Iranian ones?

  • How is a witcher called in Dutch, Greek, Portuguese (European), Romanian, Swedish and Turkish translations?

  • Last but not least, which edition(s) do you own? :) And what do you think about it, both quality-wise, and translation itself?

The Witcher 1 Which faction did you guy side with in witcher 1?

The scoia'tael or the order of flaming rose? I read half of the first witcher book the last wish so i dont know the gravity of the choices but i , on my first playthrough rn, decided to side with The order. Reason being, the scoai'tael were acting like terrorists. I understand that they were oppressed and excluded but to me their actions soo far have been just fighting for a lost cause purely out of spite, robbing banks, taking innocent people as hostages n stuff.

The order of the other didnt indulge in such stuff afaik. Siegfried is a pretty good guy. The order in general seems to just be holding things and maintaining them. Meanwhile going neutral, geralt wouldve had twice as many enemies. Didnt seem a pragmatic move to me

What did you guys choose? I just hate being confronted that i sided with the order and they butchering people (i didnt expect those imbeciles to kill innocents asw.)

The Last Wish A question about A Grain of Truth.

I was reading the first The Witcher book and got to the short story A Grain of Truth. I really enjoyed it, but one scene left me scratching my head. After Geralt leaves Nivellen's house and sleeps in the forest, he hears screams and singing, and sees a campfire in the distance. The next morning, he goes to check the spot and finds only footprints and a campfire with the remains of burned bones. Near the clearing, he notices a creature howling, but can't identify it and decides not to stick around to find out. This scene confused me. Based on the narrative, I expected it to be another victim of Vereena, the bruxa, but I couldn't find a clear connection between the two. Why would Vereena burn her victim this time, but leave the merchant and his daughter lying by the road earlier? If it was to avoid detection, she didn't seem too worried about it before, since she was singing and torturing her victim while letting them scream. Speaking of the singing, when Geralt returns to Nivellen's house, he hears Vereena singing again, but no connection is made to the song he heard the night before. Geralt mentions he couldn't understand the words, but could feel its evil nature. If it was Vereena the previous night, why didn't Geralt sense that same presence back then? Also, the creature at the top of the tree in the clearing didn't seem to spook Geralt's horse the way Vereena's presence usually did. When discussing this with my friends who also read the book, they all said it was obvious to them that it was Vereena in that forest scene. But to me, it didn't feel obvious at all. I guess it probably was her, because if not, what would be the purpose of that scene? Still, it feels like a very odd situation to me. Do you guys have similar thoughts, or am I on my own here?

The Witcher 3 Ida's advice

Post image

Does anyone know the meaning of Ida's advice? Apart from Yennefer performing the trial of the grasses afterwards obviously. Do we know somehow what the incantation says and what is Eldar's triangle? Is there a symbol in the game or in the Witcher universe?

Books How good are the Swedish translations of the books?

I have read the English translations, and while I thought they were great, I have heard that they don't come close to how good the original polish versions are and a lot gets lost in translation. My native language is Swedish so I was just curious if anyone has read those translations and if they are worth reading?

The Last Wish Why did Geralt initially believe Vereena was a Rusalka in "Grain of Truth"?

As Geralt is bidding farewell to Nivellan, He mentions that Vereena is most likely a Rusalka before resolving to leave the two in peace and be on his way. It's not until later that he realises his mistake and heads back to kill her.

Rusalka are primarily said to be malicious undead women who live in water and are typically naked. Vereena wears a white dress, and Geralt first sees her in the forest outside the manor, none of which speaks to her being a Rusalka.

Even if she were a Rusalka, why would Geralt not set out to hunt her from the beginning? Rusalka are violent monsters, and he has no other leads for who killed the travelling merchant and his daughter.

Is this a case of the Polish version of Rusalka's being different from their traditional depictions in slavic folklore or is there some other reason I'm missing? Seems kind of silly for Geralt to make such a drastic leap in logic.

“To be thought about as classically beautiful, Lytta Neyd had too sharp features. Her rouge in the color of warm peach, with which her chick bones were grazed lightly softened this sharpness, but it did not hide it. Her lips emphasized with coral lipstick had a shape so ideal, that it was too perfect. But that was not what mattered.”

“On the sorceress's head was a ruby diadem and a ruby necklace sat nestled in her deeply scooped neckline. All specially selected for the royal audience. She wanted to make an impression. And she did. King Belohun's eyes dilated and not from the rubies in her cleavage.”

Some excerpts that informed my updated Coral in DD2 🤍

Books If I hadn't known the author, I would've guessed Crossroads of Ravens to be a badly written fan fiction

The writing just seems so unbelievably shallow after the rest of his work. This caption just shows that it's sloppily written, but the real problem is that there is no depth to anything. Nothing is treated with any gravity. I don't understand how his writing has changed so much. This latest book is not enjoyable.

The Witcher 3 [P] [POL] Jak nie zwariować przy walkach na pięści? Spoiler

Books Which of Geralt's stories would you most like to see in the new Witcher novel Sapkowski is writing? MILD SPOILERS Spoiler

Mild spoilers below (in that these stories aren't discussed in the Witcher written canon through Crossroads of Ravens).

On the heels of the announcement that Sapkowski is writing a new Geralt-centered novel (or short story), I was curious what stories you are hoping to see? Whether loosely alluded to in the prior written works or something new.

Geralt’s introduction to Brokilon and the history of his relationship with Eithné and Morénn?

Geralt lifting the cormorant curse from Freixenet?

Geralt and how he spared the werewolf Otto Dussort?

His time living with Yennefer in Vengerberg or his brief relationship with Triss?

His encounters with the 14 of Sodden Hill that he recalls when he visits the gravesite?

Something else?

What story (or stories) do you hope to see in the future?

Discussions Wycena Mam 140 fabrycznie zafoliowanych, oficjalnych zestawów naszywek z Gwinta (promo z E3/Gamescom). Ile to może być warte?

Thumbnail gallery

Discussions Something I don't understand about Ciri now that she's a Witcher

First of all, if she's a Witcher and has passed the Trial, does that mean they recovered the recipe of making Witchers at some point?

Will we see other witchers besides Ciri?

In the books it's prophesied that Ciri would give birth to the universe's gigachad

If she's gone through the Trial and is a mutant, she's now infertile, so how is that supposed to work?
