Discussion Doesn't really sound like the Sox/Getz intend on making a big splash in free agency

To be fair, Reddit is the same exact way haha.

I don't see how this is exactly being misconstrued.

Assuming Getz was asked about their plans for free agency and his response is a deflection that refers to "fueling the foundation" (which typically means prospects and farm system), I would say he sidestepped and that suggests to me they're not making big plans for FA's, which is the White Sox Way.

He literally didn’t say anything that suggests their offseason plans at all, this is about as much of a PR answer you can get

"I'm going to build up the foundation"

"I'm hoping to sign a free agent"

Those are two completely different sentences. It's literally, to a T, what that old tweet is calling out. He's not going to say anything anyway. There's a new CBA that no one knows what's going to happen with and he wouldn't say anything even if it was a normal off-season. Plus building a foundation can mean signing someone.

If I was in the front office, I probably wouldn’t make any solid plans until the CBA situation is resolved.

I also wouldn’t let the press know my intentions, unless I was doing some misdirection.

Then you'll be out of luck. The players will want to sign before the CBA expires and there will be front offices to give them what they want. Just like the last cba expiration rush.

There's a lot of space between revealing specific plans and his usual drivel. At least give us the "we'll explore all avenues to improve" GM speak.

I don’t think saying he is still focusing on fueling the foundation means they’re not going in on free agency. Arguably, we’re at a point now where the only way to build the foundation is through free agency. Just sounds like they’re focusing more on long-term deals.

Even if they have had conversations about budget, he’s not going to say it.

Where did you get that from this quote

Who knows if anyone is going to make any moves this off-season, there's going to be a lock out.

u/kev11n 6h ago

This doesn’t imply that at all

Sounds more like he isn’t trading good prospects, not that he won’t be looking to acquire.

Every offseason its like we forget who owns this club

One day the grim reaper will show up and save us

Sounds like a nothing burger to me.

At most, you could interpret this as him saying “don’t expect us to outright plunder the farm system”

Which is fine

Can’t even make any trades until the WS ends. I’d imagine he talks to Jerry and he makes a couple moves before the lockout.

White Sox improved by 24 wins in 2026. In 2027, the goal should be to win 108 games.

4

u/gnordy66 6h ago

Actually they should win 118 games. They won 40% more games in 26 than 25. Another 40% increase is 118 (rounding up). Need to keep our goals based on math.

u/DanSRedskins 6h ago

I agree.

No team is making any moves until next year when the lockout ends. Just the reality being unable to commit to anything long term when no one knows what restrictions will be

I’m not sure this really says anything.

I like the approach from Getz so far. Thought the trade deadline was a swing and a miss, but the idea of adding undervalued guys without giving up much was the right one.

Will be interesting to see what the Sox do in the offseason, potential lockout notwithstanding. There are a few defensible directions, imo.

• Go all in on big free agents and try to win now
• Stay the course and let the young guys continue to develop
• Something in between, sign a few tier 2 veterans to bolster the young core

Sounds fine

the only reason i’m not going to get frustrated like i normally would is bc we don’t even know if there will be a season next year. quotes like this rn mean nothing to me.

2

u/Loose_Soup_254 3h ago

I took that quote more as him continuing to invest in analytics throughout all the organization, not necessarily him protecting prospects and continuing to only build from within the farm.

Is anyone surprised?

u/Money-Giraffe2521 Konerko 6h ago

We’ll be having this conversation in detail in a year’s time since they won’t make any moves until the CBA is resolved and the CBA won’t be resolved in time for there to be any baseball next year.

1

u/gogosox82 6h ago

Its like yall forgot who owns this baseball team or something.

2

u/BoomhauerArlen 6h ago

Our fanbase as a whole is delusional every year. They aren't spending big money. It's not that hard to comprehend. Especially now that there is a new owner in line. Stop putting in energy into "they might sign (such and such)." IT'S NOT HAPPENING.

2

u/Crxinfinite Yankees 6h ago

Yeah guys, I got bad news... They are signing me for $15. I haven't played baseball in 20 years. Really excited for the opportunity though

1

u/SpendWild6987 6h ago

If they do spend money, surely they'll spend it on multiple average players instead of signing a great player.

Sky? Blue. Water? Wet.

When Jerry is your boss it's just a given really.

My least favorite part of Getz-speak is how he constantly kicks the can down the road. "You can't ever judge me on how many games we win, it's always about the future." It's cowardice.

Dudes a strong contender for GM of the year if we’re being honest

0

u/ScaryText8187 Grandal 1h ago

After fumbling the trade deadline the way he did, he is not deserving.

0

u/Hotdog-44769 1h ago

Well we don’t vote for it so our opinions are irrelevant. But he absolutely is.

0

u/ScaryText8187 Grandal 1h ago

No, he isn't.

0

u/Hotdog-44769 1h ago

lol are you kidding me? I’m not saying he’s going to win for sure but he’s absolutely a contender.

All of those people coping with the Sox by thinking Ishiba money was going to come in and save the day are going to be sorely disappointed.
