I reckon that was the game of the cup to be honest.

Really well played.

105

u/TheRedditK9 Jul 04 '26

Does it beat the Belgium game? This game had better storylines surrounding it, but turning a game from 0-2 at 85 minutes is insane.

53

u/ProfessorPixelmon Jul 04 '26

Good point.

That game was an awesome comeback for Belgium.

925

u/M4rt1m_40675 Jul 04 '26

Cabo Verde played well, unfortunately literally everyone behind the world cup wants to keep the narrative of only the "good teams" can win so they had to stop the game immediately while every other game where the main teams were losing got 5-20 minutes extra time to score and make sure they win and I say this as a portuguese. The world cup is so obviously fixed that I genuinely can't see why people are so excited by it even after what happened last year.

Bread and circus...

u/Marc_Vn Purple 😃 Jul 04 '26

The Brazil and Japan game went on for around 10 extra minutes, that judge really thought it was going to help

212

u/Haysie95 trollface -> Jul 04 '26

This while stoppage time thing and the refs controlling when the game ends is why I think some soccer league should try out NCAA timing, even if it’s for one season. Clock stops when play is interrupted, whether it’s a goal or out of bounds and each half ends when the clock hits 45 or 90 minutes

15

u/swampyman2000 Jul 04 '26

I would love that. Idk why they do the whole “oh we think we’ll add 5 minutes but actually it’s more like 7”

27

u/In_Pursuit_of_Fire Jul 04 '26

I thought that was because Brazil spent almost 3 minutes celebrating

127

u/Independent-Fly6068 Jul 04 '26

Colombia was fucking ROBBED.

106

u/beetlesin Jul 04 '26

Croatia too bro, genuinely ridiculous offside call

99

u/Independent-Fly6068 Jul 04 '26

Fifa refs & organizers should be fed to the teams they robbed

34

u/Cute-War-6884 Jul 04 '26

Are you suggesting the teams should eat rancid shit?

19

u/beetlesin Jul 04 '26

Would still taste better than a rigged loss

16

u/Samthevidg Jul 04 '26

Croatia was pretty objective. The sensors detected force applied to the ball and until specified in the rules, you can’t allow any arbitrary leeway.

10

u/_chococat_ Jul 04 '26

If the ball "touched" Matanović's head and clearly hit Veiga's head, why don't the sensor traces I've seen show both impacts? They happened a fraction of a second apart. How convenient that the graphs I've seen have no labels or legends. Also note that the telemetry from the ball is not synched to the video, it has to be synched manually. Take from that what you will.

4

u/Sasteer google en passant. Jul 04 '26

modric's face looks as if he's just accept that fact

116

u/LosuthusWasTaken Jul 04 '26

unfortunately literally everyone behind the world cup wants to keep the narrative of only the "good teams" can win so they had to stop the game immediately while every other game where the main teams were losing got 5-20 minutes extra time to score and make sure they win

Stopping every half on the dot was honestly stupid, for both sides, because it completely ignored the momentum and stopped it in the middle of plays that could've been a goal.

8

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '26

[deleted]

34

u/LosuthusWasTaken Jul 04 '26

Isn’t that just like every other timed sport though?

This WC, not really. Most games have an extra few minutes after the last minute, and in pretty much all cases they give it some extra minutes on top of that in case it's in the middle of a play.

During the Argentina-Cape Verde match, though, they ended the halves ON THE DOT (4:00 and 8:00 respectively) ignoring the fact that the ball was still in play and there was an attack going on.

21

u/Santi5578 Jul 04 '26

I agree that Cabo Verde played extraordinarily well, though the ref actually did the same strict time keeping for the 45 and 90 minute extra time. For both, the whistle blew 1s after the initial added time, no exceptions. At the 45' + 4:01' mark, even though Argentina had possession approaching goal and was mid-play, the whistle was blown and half-time started.

Whether that means "FIFA federation wanted good teams to win" or "this specific ref is a hard stickler for time, unlike most others have been", I can't be certain, but I think of the two, the second option is much more likely

Still tho, 100000/10 performance by CV

5

u/TimbersFan8 Jul 04 '26

That referee does a lot of MLS games, he ends the game on the dot much more often than most

5

u/Nhobdy Jul 04 '26

Happy cake day!

Also I agree. The ref in the Cabo Verde game made so many bad calls or fouls that clearly weren't. We were on the edge of our seats when Cabo Verde had the ball, and it was so amazing to see them play.

1

u/SDsalta145 Jul 04 '26

wdym, the belgium senegal match lasted 10 more minutes than it should

3

u/Delicious_Produce662 dm me unnerving images Jul 04 '26

The biggest issue with governments (independently of whether they are left or right) is that they all resolve into the same (generally).

In the case of Argentina right now, they have a government that not only sells it's own means of production and resources, but also sells them at such low prices.

That country has everything a nation could need, resources, means to get energy, land, etc.

It's a country that (currently) gives away it's resources to buy the products at exuberantly greater prices.

2

u/FantasmaNaranja Gooning to esoteric concepts. Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26

yup, but the thing is from this century at least left wing goverments over here have generally tried to strengthen local production because they're aware of what you said, the country has practically everything needed to be self sufficient

meanwhile right wing goverments have done their best to sell land to the highest bidder or even just friends (see: Bolsonaro's brazilian goverment as well) and destroy local production under the guise of a "free market" (Milei's foundational policy)

so you're definitively right in the sense that Menem was from a left wing party (even if his policies were very similar to Milei's current policies) and he tried to sell the country piece by piece in the 90s though

Can you prove these "facts"?

18

u/Ordo_Liberal Jul 04 '26

Goalie was setting up the wall and arbiter blows the whistle for the kick before he is back in position.

Defense gets kicked in the knee and no faul is given but you take the ball from Messi and it's an instant faul.

Game ends as soon as Argentina scores the tie breaker. Meanwhile the Brazil x Japan game the judge invents the 3rd time just to give Japan a chance at a tie.

3

u/No-Lavishness-5570 Jul 05 '26
  1. Whistle was called already. It’s the opposing team’s fault for not correcting the wall beforehand.

May I remind you of the countless FKs and Corners that have been scored because the opposing team was distracted. All of those were “fair” while this is “unsportsmanlike”. Crazy double standards.

2 There was no contact. You might be blind or biased, but there was no touch and it was a dive by the CV player.

  1. No time wasted hence no ET. Same happened when CV equalised in 102nd minute but very limited ET was given at half time.

Stop spreading propaganda and start watching matches.

Argentina genuinely has a massive racism problem. Fuck sake, many of their own players are racist. https://www.reddit.com/r/LiverpoolFC/s/DLyexyugTy

Look at what they did to their black population in the early 1900s too and there doesn't seem to be much regret for that.

7

u/Lord-Baldomero Jul 04 '26

First off, I'm not going to defend the players singing that song, I thought it was stupid back in the day and I still think it (specially cause whithin Argentina the main social problem is more clasism than racism so it's quite stupid for those guys to sing a racist song when pretty much all of them come from poverty, iow the segregated group) but I do think it's just some shit they did because it hurts and football fans like to sing shit that hurts, it's the same reason why people from South America sing about Malvinas being under UK's position to shit talk us, I don't really think they are genuinely racist normally or that they hate black people specifically. They did get penalized for that tho, I recall Scaloni had to personally apoligize even when he wasn't in that bus.

As for the 1900s thing, I'm going to be honest, I'm barely finding out about this. I've always been told the reason why black population in Argentina is so low was due to a good chunk dying in wars like the Paraguayan war and the rest just got assimilated by mixing up with the rest, but the thing about being forced to mix and leave their culture is new to me, that's really fucked up (guess it's no surprise knowing fucking Roca and what that mdf did with the Indian population).

What I do wanna say tho is that I genuinely think Argentina isn't currently as racist as people make it out to be. I'm not afro-american black but I am fairly dark skinned (you know, south American dark skinned) and I don't recall ever being segregated or treated differently for that. Of course, there's always that one dumbass that starts genuinely believe the European blood myth (you know, treating the European immigrants most come from as of they were only the highest classes when most where actually people from the lower classes starving and desperate to start a new life after fleeing from war) but it's genuinely not as much people as people from outside the cpuntry think

7

u/Other_Beat8859 Jul 04 '26

but I do think it's just some shit they did because it hurts and football fans like to sing shit that hurts, it's the same reason why people from South America sing about Malvinas being under UK's position to shit talk us,

These are not comparable at all. One is banter about Argentina losing a war they started about some islands for people who don't even want to be Argentinian. It's like making fun of Germany for losing WW2. Also, they still claim the islands and play the victim. If they didn't still claim the islands and play the victim, very few people would make fun of them. Also, I'm sorry, but your excuse for the racism is that they're singing that stuff to make people feel bad... That's fucking horrible and is objectively racist. Making fun of someone's race is not banter. It's just being a fucking cunt.

There are also multiple papers that discuss the racism present in Argentinian society. It's become addressed more recently, but it's still prevalent:

https://www.ohchr.org/en/news/2019/03/invisible-no-more-people-african-descent-demand-rights-argentina

https://www.ungeneva.org/en/news-media/meeting-summary/2023/04/examen-de-largentine-la-situation-des-peuples-autochtones-et-des

https://bicyt.conicet.gov.ar/fichas/produccion/en/11758371

You can also find many people's personal accounts about their experiences with racism in the country.

You linking a Reddit post as proof is as valuable as a koala or a moon fish. Yeah, it's reddit of, course there's every mentally ill specimen you can think of in this shithole of a place, and so twitter and friends. Truth is that if you go to Argentina or any south American country in general, there's going to be barely any negative feedback at all, internet on the other hand is full of rage baiters and attention starved people (there are genuine people that we would be better off to save some oxygen for the rest). Even so, there can be genuinely wholesome people too around here, but if you only want to look at the rocky side of the road then that's your choice.

2

u/Other_Beat8859 Jul 04 '26

What? It's a fucking video. If Enzo Fernandes didn't delete the video I'd have linked that video. Where the video is being posted doesn't matter.

Also, before you scream context, there is no context for this obvious racism.

They are also racist. At the start of the year a woman came to Brazil on a trip. She started discussing with a guy at a bar and started imitating a monkey because he was black.

She got arrested and just around 2 months ago she was released. What did the angentinan government did? Told people coming to Brazil that they shouldn't imitate monkey, as people can get offended.

I mean..we care about our victory lol. and we know we're not gonna steal the spotlight from CV this match was their time to shine from the  start

u/No_Association5862 Jul 04 '26

Cabo Verde who just qualified to the world cup for the first time in their history went toe to toe with argentina, the reigning champions in a generational match. Cabo Verde also managed huge upsets vs Spain and Uruguay by holding them both to a draw, with great performances from their defense and especially their goalkeeper Vozinha (who gained millions of followers after the Spain match lmao). Spain is one of, if not the favorite to win the whole thing aside from France btw, so it makes it even more impressive

Cap Verde lost 2:3 to Argentinia in Football. They were the underdogs and put up a good fight

8

u/Everestkid Jul 04 '26

They took Argentina into extra time and damn well could have taken them to penalties.

I only regret that I was at work and was only watching the score rather than the game itself.

3

u/Brakina1860 i changed it hahahahahahhahahahahahaha Jul 04 '26

It starten at midnight here and i stayed awake. It was absolutely worth it. One of thr best matches i watched. Thank you Cap Verde

Fifa is sucking Messi and Ronaldo's dicks harder than I can, and I've got lungs the size of an elephant's ear.

23

u/peanutist trollface -> Jul 04 '26

They reeeeeally want a Ronaldo x Messi game. They reeeeeally know that if Ronaldo or Messi are eliminated their ratings will drop a ton.

2

u/Sybmissiv Jul 04 '26

Respect your lungs honestly. I can learn from you.

I swear that Argentinians are the worst, I'm in a couple Facebook groups (there's more Spanish speaking groups there), and all the time before the match were saying racial insults to the Cabo Verde team and how they are pure blooded Germans, that they came on boats and how they're the best on everything.

As Mexican you know how much they say us as "Mexichangos" (translated something to Mexican-ape).

10

u/BSK_Darksol Jul 04 '26

I don't know how they can enjoy an celebrate such a mediocre victory lmfao cape Verde made them their birches tbh.

Sadly they always had a slight edge thanks to the referee calling a foul every time a mosquito touched an Argentinian player, ignoringthe disgusting tackles by Argentinian defenders against rival players, ending the game at the exact minute, knowing perfectly well that Cape Verde was about to have a chance to score, but delaying the hydration pause and giving Argentina 3 full fucking minutes to have multiple chances to score before the pause, also allowing a player that just got medical assist to re-enter the field before the time out he had to wait. And so on.

They always get so many assists from fifa to ensure messi passes to the next round that I really don't get how Argentinians fans feel accomplished seeing how FIFA treats their team like princesses lmao. I'd be embarrassed if that's the way my team wins everytime.

u/iluvkittykat333 Jul 04 '26

bro, an argentinian once called me a blackie. i’m not, i’m very pale i just have dark hair and brown eyes lmao

1

u/Konrol Jul 04 '26

We are literally that meme from the boondocks (i think the show is called) "we call everyone nword, we call ourselves nword, nword this, nword that, nword please" we call the whitest white to ever white "negro" because we dont care, nobody that gets called negro in argentina cares. But when we do it in the rest of the world it is a problem (rightfully so, you dont need to be like argentina) and people struggle being something they are not (my initial comment had the explicit nword (no hard r) and i had to censor it).

1

u/Rickityklutz Jul 04 '26

There's this little thing called confirmation bias and sample sizes. Stop generalizing a country made out of 45 million people because of some couple thousand loud assholes.

1

u/Own_Interview6789 Jul 05 '26

My dude, i can assure you, the last thing we argentinians do is call us pure blooded germans, since we are more proud of being ARGENTINIAN. The thing about the boats was said by our ex-president, that was a senile old man that was THE clown and pet of the vice. And we are definitely not the best at everything or we would have a decent economy, and if you say it because we call ourselves "the best country in the world"? Everyone in this country knows, without doubt, that is not true... The most fun to be in? Maybe, you are never bored with the news here.

I say YOU are the worst for putting an entire country in a bag just because some idiots that, surely, are not or are no longer argentinians, just so more people can hate others from a country for no more reason than "he thinks is better than others" when the reality is not like that

The Argentinian team barely had any energy to celebrate the victory

I've never seen a team more pushed to their limits

6

u/CommunicationBig8808 Jul 04 '26

Man seeing everyone enraged at Argentina saying it was rigged is so fucking hilarious lmao  Like how could they rig it? With what money? Lol

1

u/Noreturmihj Jul 05 '26

FIFA's money...

FIFA wants their bullshit dream match between Messi v Cristiano...

Doesn't matter how shitty it looks, they want casuals to watch the world cup.

Nobody actually believe your miserable shithole country paid to win matches...

This is not even about your country, loser.

God these people are crazy. The hand was ridiculously obvious and they still didn't give penalty to Argentina.

Great game, but if they wanted to favor Argentina, they didn't take the clear opportunities they had. It's just fair refereeing.

Argentina keeping tradition of not being knocked out due to a handball not being counted as a handball (the own goal was because the ball bounced off a Capeverdean hand)

3

u/AnimeTiddiess Jul 04 '26

fouls don't count when the other team has the advantage. it would make no sense to remove the point to give a penalty(the possibility of a point). Only if the attacking team fouls does the discount occur. otherwise you'd be incentivicing defending players to foul on purpose if the goal seems inevitable to discount it immediately

9

u/Fododel Jul 04 '26

Did Argentina actually be rude and say something to Cabo Verde?

7

u/Red_Crow1907 Jul 04 '26

nope, we argentinians have great respect for cabo verde and this post is just being silly

1

u/Mr_Missingno Jul 05 '26

There were recorded instances of Argentine fans throwing plastic cups and bottles at the CV crowd.

3

u/Red_Crow1907 Jul 05 '26

Unfortunately there will allways be assholes somewhere, and yet even despise this people existing i can assure you our whole country has great respect for cabo verde

4

u/Red_Crow1907 Jul 04 '26

people just LOVE to say our economy is horrible and call us hambrentinos but whenever we win the game is rigged, with what money dude?

1

u/Noreturmihj Jul 05 '26

FIFA's money...

You are very lucky Messi decided to play for Argentina... Any national team Messi chose it would have be help by FIFA.

The same happens with Cristiano...

FIFA know most casuals love those 2.

8

u/Red_Crow1907 Jul 04 '26

4

People are rooting for cape verde because it’s a underdog

2

"Se llenan la boca hablando de racismo y Xenofobia" no son mentiras, deberian mejor de aceptarlo que son de lo peor y por eso nadie los apoya.

1

u/Stranger_Phrog Jul 04 '26

As any good Brazilian, seeing Argentina struggle against Cabo Verde was incredible, honestly, and Vozinha deserved the MVP award, no one cares about Messi, he’s old news

2

u/Nhobdy Jul 04 '26

Honestly, Vozinha is the first player that might make me get a jersey of his number. His goalie skills and playing with the ball in front of opposing players is something I've never seen before. And that he's 40 years old and keeping pace with other players is awesome.

If I ever can afford a jersey, it'll be Vozinha.
