As someone that used to play lots of dota2 on eu, to this day I'm baffled why Russians are allowed on eu servers. They actually do understand English largely speaking, but often refuse to speak it and just speak/chat in Russian. They're very rude. Not all of course but a big chunk of them.
I mean, that´s true for almost any nationality in EU servers. I´ve seen people talk in Fr*nch, Portuguese, Spanish or whatever without acknowledging English. Not everyone knows English.
Again. I've seen this kind of crap from spanish speakers, french, germans, koreans, russians.
It's not a country specific thing, there are many people apparently assuming, that everyone speaks their language. And trust me, it irritates me even when someone randomly without knowing where I'm from addresses me in my language.
I've seen often the opposite case as well, when russians or russian speaking dudes speak english between each other despite situation allowing them to speak whatever language they want. But it mostly works for the players who are higher level and participate in the tournaments.
When you studying the language you probably will start to understand people speaking it way more before when you start be able to actually respond them.
It's obvious that they do it because they are rude and don't care but I still wanna highlight that speaking for most of people is the HARDEST part of learning foreign language
You can easily understand what other people say/write but actually talking in that language feels impossible
