I’ve tried playing without keep inventory as well as gravestone mods. I hate them all. If I have to play without keep inventory I am just not going to play at all.

I prefer keep inv but on servers gravestones will always be funny because I get to laugh at my friends while helping recover a grave from a lava lake in the nether

Once you play with a gravestone mod you'll realize how bullshit the vanilla death system is.

Like gravestone mods are the perfect mix between the keep inventory on and keep inventory off.

It helps that you don't have a strict timer and the amount of items you lose isn't rng related. Oh you died? tough luck shit ass your diamond sword just swerved into a diamond pit.

Once again modded Minecraft is better than vanilla

It's worth nothing that the keep inventory off system is not based on a timer that starts the second you die like many people seem to believe

Your items despawn after 5 minutes as long as the chunk is loaded, a.k.a, if you die 10 minutes away from your spawn, you still have a chance to get your items

Things only happening if a chunk is loaded is one of my most hated Minecraft features.

It would be so trivial for the Devs to "fix" most of the bad or unusual outcomes of it too.

For one, if they wanted to make the item despawn consistent, they could timestamp the chunk when it unloads, and check the new time against that timestamp when it is loaded again.

Then for every: Baby animal Crop Dropped item

They could just use the "number of ticks since last loaded" number from the chunk unload time, and use a probability function to age up the right number of animals, grow the right amount of crop, despawn items dropped more than 5 mins ago etc.

To be fancier, it could be used to add new features, such as if a village has valid spare housing and can expand (i.e. the player built more, or villagers died when the player vi sited), then a similar probability function multiplied by time could be used to roughly "fast forward" the progress the village would have made without the player being tied to the radius of 12-16 chunks of it at all times.

It's always annoyed me that Minecraft basically forces you to stay near your home if you want home things to continue to work. This feature would make exploration with periodic returns to base much more enticing since you could breed your animals and plant your fields and then head off, and have mostly grown animals and mostly grown crops when you return instead of coming back to still tier 1 crops and baby animals after being gone for an hour.

i made a whole ass post about this lol, this is exactly what most games do

They keep trying to get players to explore, but then make it hard for them to explore without their farms basically shutting down. Even if Pistons stop working, you can come back, flip the piston on, and then still get a working farm.

Go work at mojang bruh

This is not trivial. It would work great for conventional farms, but changing unloaded world behavior would irreversibly break countless technical farms and machines. Most other games only officially support conventional farming methods, so they can get away with fudging the numbers. Minecraft supports precise control over the game’s mechanics, from exploits to outright bugs, at the cost of loading each chunk and entity manually. Technical farms are so powerful that it’s unnecessary to keep them running when they’re not loaded, since they can produce all the resources you need in a matter of minutes. Keeping technical redstone alive is more important to the devs than making exploration slightly more practical.

This is why reducing render distance, can increase time before the timer for items to despawn starts

Such wonderful game design.

Tell that to lava lakes

What my Minecraft character sees after i got hit by a ghast (i was bridging):

1

u/concaveUsurper Apr 15 '26

Did they change it for single player then? Because I was always told the 5 minute timer was only for multiplayer worlds.

nah because playing with the vanilla death system already shows how bullshit it is

I love the gravestone mods, for the same reason. It still means I'm punished for stupid decisions (I make many) and have to do better, and I have to go get my shit but I don't ragequit because it's all the way in the Nether when I got lost (again, I suffer from idiot)

My girlfriend accidentally tossed her sword in to the ocean and was freaking out on the private server we host on our netflix alternative server.

I spend 10 minutes tracking it down and told her exactly where to go.

Diamond pit?

3

u/RandomRedditorEX Apr 15 '26

...Lava pit.

I blame Minecraft for making me so spite driven I wrote something incorrectly lmao

u/BigDaddyReptar Apr 15 '26

I don't think the original system is bullshit tbh I think it keeps just some level of engagement in the game for me personally vs nothing really having consequences. All just depends what you like neither is better or worse.

u/Miserable-Resort-977 Apr 15 '26

It's not a bullshit system, it's just a different system. It incentivizes players to pack carefully for a trip to the mines rather than carrying all their valuable items at once, and creates situations where you have to decide between digging a bit deeper for more loot or returning to your base to secure your gains. The intent is to force you to plan ahead and play more carefully.

3

u/Grilled_egs Apr 15 '26

The inconsistency of how much time you have to recover the items depending on cave layout is just annoying, and not something you can even keep in mind unless you just play with f3 always open

3

u/Miserable-Resort-977 Apr 15 '26

Preference is preference, but this is absolutely something you can compensate for with your playstyle, and the chance of losing some/all of your stuff is an intended mechanic. If you're conservative with the amount of gear you bring mining, carefully mark your path so it's easy to return to your base, return often to drop off your loot so you don't lose everything when you die, or bring a bed mining and make mini safe rooms to sleep in as you go, you can easily make the mechanic significantly less punishing. It's incentivizing

Instead, people load up with all their diamond gear, run into a giant cave system without a plan to get back to their base, stay down there for way too long, die with a full inventory with hours worth of loot, and rage quit.

I don't have a problem with people playing how they want, but there's a difference between a bad mechanic and one you just don't prefer. For me, the mid game of Minecraft is absolutely the best part, and keep inventory allows you to rush through it way too fast. I prefer having to be cautious and conservative when I'm doing deep runs looking for diamonds, it makes things feel much more tense, and makes successful runs much more rewarding

It’s a sandbox game. Why are they trying to force you into a certain playstyle?

3

u/Miserable-Resort-977 Apr 15 '26
  1. They're not. Cheats, keep inventory, and mod support are all readily available. Just because it's the intended vanilla experience doesn't mean they're "forcing" you

  2. You could say the same about every mechanic. Do monster spawns "force" you into a playstyle where you use torches and avoid going out at night? Does the hunger system force you into a playstyle where you have to gather and prepare food before going into the mines?

One time with my nephew he died in a lava lake in the nether and it took us 45 mins to get to the spot he died, just for both of us to instantly die again 😭 and we didn't have any backup stuff so we had to go mining to become equipped to save our original items and it was so funny but so irritating
