REQUEST r/whatsthisrock is Recruiting New Mods!!!

Hello, r/whatsthisrock community!

Our subreddit has grown significantly, and with that growth comes an increase in rule-breaking comments, low-effort jokes, and automated spam. As you know, this is a strict, science-focused Identification community. We require all comments to provide a physical rock/mineral ID or directly contribute to the scientific identification process.

We do not allow folklore, superstitions, unhelpful jokes, or arguments (that are not constructive) in our identification threads.

To keep our queue clean and maintain the quality of the sub, we are opening applications for new moderators.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Queue-Clearers: Your primary job will be opening the Mod Queue, reviewing reported comments, and removing non-ID responses or banning spammers cleanly and efficiently.
  • Thoroughness: We need people who actually know our rules (and Reddit Mod Code of Conduct) and enforce them uniformly without getting dragged into emotional arguments with users in modmail.
  • Consistency: You don't need to spend all day on Reddit, but we need active eyes consistently contributing to monitoring the sub.

Before you click the application link below, you must thoroughly read our community sidebar and rules page. Please also review Reddit's Moderator Code of Conduct. We have implemented automated gatekeeping measures to weed out low-effort or automated submissions. If you do not follow the exact instructions hidden within our documentation, your application will be instantly and permanently deleted without review. If you are ready to help us clean up the queue and keep the focus on rock identification, please apply using the link below:

(Click here to apply to the Mod team!) https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf1gdFvlauq1y6F22S7cCUzIptVkYP8oOBmS6XS68Bz-YWykA/viewform?usp=sharing&ouid=103554154763378178256

Thanks for your help keeping our subreddit clean and running smoothly. Rock on!

As title says, found this rock in the NE Platte River in central Nebraska while stopping to let my dogs run around on a long road trip. Need help identifying. This rock is more dull when dried off. Any info is appreciated. P.S. Sorry for the dirty nails from combing for rocks!

From my mother’s jewelry, a mid century ring with a stone that changes color. Not bright, more dusky. Usually looks like an amethyst but under fluorescence it’s really green. Shown in mixed light, directly under LED lamp and then after lamp was turned off. No idea where she got it but she collected a number of pieces in the 1960s when we lived in Florida. Plus she and my father made jewelry and he had a faceting machine. Don’t know if they made this or not. Ideas? Thanks.

REQUEST Strange rock or something macabre?

Hello and apologies in advance for possibly posting this in the wrong place and/or alarming anyone. My bf always picks small rocks and shells for me when he’s traveling and brought this strange item back from a recent trip near Point Judith, Rhode Island. I was rinsing it off with two other rocks when I started to notice it had a different weight + texture to it and sounded different against the metal of the sink. The more I rinsed, the more it resembled….teeth. This has completely freaked me out, as it does not look like any animal teeth I’ve been able to cross-reference. 😰 Would so appreciate any opinions on what is going on here. (Item is hard and seems calcified, fyi) Thank you!

This is my dad's, found near a railroad track in central Pennsylvania in the late 60s/early 70s. The brown spots are pretty dull and smooth with slightly sparkly more textured inclusions. There are small areas that appear greenish, but it's possible it got scuffed over the years.

The outside has a very "organic" looking pattern. Almost looks like a fossilized plant or something.

I assumed these blue crystal’s were quartz but I’ve never seen quartz with this growth pattern. There was no effect when I submerged the rock in muriatic acid and I’m unable to scratch the crystals with a knife.

I found this in a riverbed in central southern BC, Canada. I believe the sparkle is from mica, as it is very prominent in this area. Agate, opal, and quartz all occur naturally in this area.

This rock was just sitting in the grass in the courtyard of my apartment complex. It feels like it’s been tumbled or something. It’s so smooth and the edges are curvy

I found these in a creek in upstate New York.

At first they appear to be sapphire . Once you crack it open it appears like quartz. Like quartz with a blue skin.

Does anyone know this mineral ?

I found this guy in the Rock River near South Newfane, VT. It caught my eye because it looks to be covered in garnets, but I’m not sure of what else. Rock is about the size of my fist and was photographed dry.

Any ideas? My first thought was some sort of slag? Feels like glass and has a green color that can be seen in some of the photos.

Hi all,

My BF found this "rock" is a dried up river bed in southwest virginia (right near the north cafolina border)

Im convinced its glass or some slag from an old factory nearby but he thinks its quartz or something similar.

Any ideas?
