Solved! Found this at goodwill
Looks somewhat antique, some kind of cage to hatch chicks perhaps?

It's for storing things like potatoes and onions

Potatoes OR onions, not to sound like a fartface, tho.
They arent ideal bedfellows due to the onion's ethylene and the potato's moisture.

I still sounded like a fartface. Sorry!

I forgive you. And you really shouldn't even feel sorry because you added more detailed information that's useful.
A lot of times I notice that someone will know what the thing is but not know much more about it, but later on someone with more knowledge and/or specialized expertise comes along and tells the whole story beyond the correct answer to a guessing game.

Thanks for circling back.
Fwiw, when I was a young adult, newly fledged and adulting on my own, I left a tied, plastic grocery bag containing potatoes AND onions on top of the fridge...and forgot them there.
Until I noticed liquid puddling at the side of the fridge. Followed the trail up the fridge, grabbed the bag down, and dripped liquid-friggin-fartface onto my whole self.
I died a lil bit that day.

This information is appreciated. I've ended up storing them in the same place and noticed they were going bad faster than expected but didn't know why.

u/Jaded_Western_7652 2h ago
they technically never really go bad. once they start to go bad, you just throw them in the ground. they grow a whole new plant

u/External-Yak5576 2h ago
I've been storing them together. Am I going to die ?

But onions and ported cause each other to spoil together. So potatoes or onions.

u/EyeSuspicious777 6h ago
I'd guess that when these were being used in the past that people had more than one of them?

u/GeneInternational146 6h ago
The one my mom had in our kitchen when I was growing up had a compartment in the top that was solid wood and for potatoes, and the bottom was a draw with a mesh bottom for onions. Best of both worlds

u/Any-Alternative2667 6h ago
Initially they had root cellars which is a a room that is cool and dry and below the level of a basement.
2
u/EyeSuspicious777 6h ago
So this might be used to hold a few pounds of those things in the kitchen after bringing them up from that root cellar?

*from the 90s. I swear for a while EVERYTHING had a goose with a blue bow on it's neck.

u/Severe_Square_472 6h ago
That's exactly what it's for if you ever lived on a farm you store potatoes OR onions in it

u/ConsistentImage 8h ago
A bin for potatoes or onions (don't put them together!). And definitely from the 90s, made clear by the wooden cutout geese. My mom would've loved this one - a perfect match for her goose print border. With coordinating wallpaper AND sponge paint, of course.

Oh the sponge painted walls! In dark green if I had to guess.

Lol! Hunter Green was everything back then. My mom was on team maroon/burgundy. I was so jealous of my friends with dark green walls.

I want one now. I check the thrift store regularly, one day I’ll find the perfect goose bin of my dreams.

What a unique find!!! It's fascinating and at first I thought it was a sewing cabinet, or to hold yarn, but it could be used for anything and it's charming too!

My grandma had one like that there should be a board in the middle that seperates the onions and potatoes. Hers did not have geese on it hers had a cow with a calf. They were made by the Amish down in Virginia in the 1959s and 1960s. An antique dealer bought grandmas after she passed for $285 dollars. Looking online there were some made without the middle board.

It’s a rustic version of a sewing box- a place to keep your fabric, buttons, needles and thread- my mom had one and my sister has it now- it doesn’t have chicken wire on it- the drop down doors are solid.

others have told you potatoes or onions. Or other kitchen items that don't need refrigertion. Not exactly an antique. That look was in fashion during the late 1980s and early '90s. I'd say...vintage. But it's made to look rustic, and was supposed to look antique, even then.
It's surely a good item to have...uesful, and probably not pricey.

Now that's something I've not seen in a long time. A long time. This took me back to a very young age on a farm. What an odd item to wake up so much nostalgia! Thanks for that OP
