I feel like a lot of what makes me nervous around bugs is that they're too small for me to see what they're doing. Once you start getting them up to, like, kitten-size? Most of my problems vanish. Spiders creep me out, but a spider as big as a golden retriever would probably just trigger my desire to pet a dog.
