Solved! Black on the sun

Haze is pretty bad where I am right now and saw the sun was this bright orange color. Took a 30x zoomed in picture and noticed these black dots. At first I thought it was due to dirty lens but then I took photos in portait and landscape, the spots show up at the same part of the sun. Around 9 o'clock position.

Due to the haze you could actually a look at it directly and can also sort of make out the spot from the photo. What could it be?

That sunspot covers an area wider than the diameter of earth. He's a big boy!

64

u/Hypamania 17h ago

Thats fucked. What is a sun spot? If a probe got close, would it be really dark? Is it cooler? Is it still plasma?

133

u/Armored_Cocrane 17h ago

It's a colder area of the sun, and when we say colder, it's still in the 4000°C.

I'm not english enought for this, but, simply, it's a bunch of reaction of gas that's magnetic field mess with. Causing solar flare(? Is it flare ? Maybe solar storm ?), and the few sunspot. At least, in my humble understanding.

French. And thanks you !

I still need to learn exactly how to write good phrase in english, i often write wierd sentence, such here with "A bunch of reaction of gas that's magnetic field mess with." Don't feel natural nor good to me, it's feel wrong, but i don't know how to write it better y'know.

And, beside, what's often worry me if i write in english, and explain thing, is my lack of extended m knowledge about many words...you know, scientific word, common word, familiar speech, these kind of things you will have as a natural talker of your language.

But thank you to say that's ! It's nice to know i do better !

11

u/Korochun 12h ago

English isn't my first either, but personally the easiest way to learn how to write is to read a lot of books in that language. Terry Pratchett for example is great for learning conversational English writing. By the time you are done with the Discworld series you will be more fluent than most native speakers.

English is my first language, and I hope that it reassures you to know that everything you have written here makes perfect sense, even if the sentences aren't the most 'natural'.

The way I see it, being understood is more important than perfect grammar or word choices. You're doing amazing :)

3

u/-heatoflife- 10h ago

English is a bitch to learn, but your grasp is perfectly intelligible, my friend. Keep watching English-language media and posting on English forums, you'll be just fine!

2

u/mattmillze 10h ago

French. And thanks!

I still need to practice my phrasing in english, I often write weird sentences, as in the comment above "A bunch of reaction of gas that's magnetic field mess with." It doesn't sound quite right because the vocabulary and grammar differences between French and English don't align well when written out.

Something else that often worries me when using English is that I haven't quite mastered the nuances of explaining things from a scientific standpoint because I lack the words to describe things as easily as I do in my native tongue.

But I appreciate the confirmation that I'm getting better at communicating

14

u/RandomVOTVplayer 15h ago

You englished it perfectly, dont worry.

3

u/mattmillze 11h ago

I'm going to rewrite your comments as a native speaker to give you some reference words and expressions in English that will help you practice more fluency. By no means am I saying your English is poor. I was able to understand what you were trying to say, no problem. Here's what I got:

It's a colder area of the sun. Still 4000°C, to be fair, but colder relatively to the rest of the surface.

My english isn't quite good enough for this. To put it simply, the magnetic field lines interact with the plasma on the surface, causing solar flares and the occasional sunspot. At least, to the extent of my understanding.

2

u/AdEastern9303 13h ago

Your English is better than some people I know who ONLY speak English.

9

u/Top_Tip_2 16h ago

Yep, it is caused by the insane magnetic field the sun has. Not sure if it will be dark up close as it is said that if we isolate a sun spot it will shine brighter than the moon. I think it is safe to say, you will be blind long before you can see anything

2

u/Successful-Impact-25 15h ago

It wouldn’t be as distinguishable if you were in front of the sun, as the Earth’s atmosphere contains gases that cause light to act differently than in space (Think the reason for things like sunsets/rises or the aurora borealis).

Another thing to mention is that, nominally, stars aren’t looked at through the naked eye; but through multiple filters that notate light, temperature, UV type, and so forth. Some of the things we know about on some things just simply don’t look the same through the naked eye - it would be the difference between being able to see Jupiter’s red storm and a fire in broad daylight.

2

u/Top_Tip_2 14h ago

Yeah this is kinda what i imagine too. Maybe you will see a difference, but it wouldn't be a black void the size of earth

2

u/rogbriepfisch 14h ago

Sun spots are regions of magnetic field activity that is out of phase with the rest of the magnetic field. This results in a lower surface temperature in that region. The sun goes through 11 year cycles where its magnetic activity is higher or lower than the cycle before it. The sun is currently in a cycle of more magnetic activity and therefore there are more sun spots.

Keep in mind the sun is a highly dense gas that is in equilibrium between gravity pulling the gasses of hydrogen and helium together and their high density causes them to fuse which releases photons. This is very energetic and causes massive magnetic effects. As the elements fuse they release photons, and create new elements.

A year or two ago there was heavy smoke in the air in my state from wildfires and the sun was sitting perfectly in the tint band at the top of my windshield as I was driving to work. I could see the sunspots, I was so shocked when I realized what I was seeing that I almost rear-ended someone in front of me. when I got to work I looked up a picture of the sunspots and they matched. As a space/science nerd it was a top 5 moment for me for sure.

Holy cow, did you actually photograph sunspots with a phone camera? That's amazing! Also, you shouldn't look at the sun, even when it's hazy out enough that looking at it doesn't hurt. That's why eclipses cause blindness. It makes it easier to look at the sun, and gives it a chance to burn your retinas.

102

u/Leading_Smile_9216 20h ago

I used to think looking at sun causes blindness is a myth. But just looked it up on google, it can cause blind spots on retina under 20 seconds.

112

u/Sorenvious 19h ago

My gf works at a cataract clinic and sees a lot of interesting people. One time she had a girl with burns on her retina because she saw a video on TikTok saying looking at the sun daily is good for you. Please don’t look at big ball of fire that heats an entire planet

44

u/TheTommyMann 18h ago

It's not fire, it's a nuclear fusion reactor the size of 1.3 million Earths. A person might be tempted to look at fire, probably not a nuclear explosion.

20

u/theschmuck 20h ago

Thanks, yeah it was stupid move to look at it directly. Hopefully my eye glasses with UV protection saved me a bit.

39

u/darmok42 19h ago

Unless they are welding glasses, they wont.

3

u/Foil_Gloves_5338 17h ago edited 17h ago

I looked at the sun wearing a welding hood. It was still fairly uncomfortable to look at.

And no. I didn't stare it down like a dumb-ass. The process went exactly like this...

"Hmm. I wonder if I can look at the s... Oh fuck!"

3

u/darmok42 17h ago

Did quick search, you need level 14 welding glass to look at an eclipse. So not surprised that most welding glass ain't enough to stare at the brightest light in a 4 light year radius.

12

u/Yumaa_ 19h ago

UV protection won’t help you there, the sun can physically damage your retina. As we know, “the sun is a deadly laser.”

Also don’t point your camera at the sun without a solar filter. It can also be damaged.

29

u/Former_Mobile3101 17h ago

IOS was designed for people who aren't even the slightest tech savvy. If you're even a bit tech savvy then you will realize how much the IOS sucks, the only thing that apple has going for them is the seamless connectivity and thats even being done by other companies now.

63

u/Careful_Bell8426 17h ago

I’m very tech savvy and I love iOS. Once you get past the age of about 16 you lose desire to fuck around with your phone and just want it to do its job.

9

u/Illustrious_Unit7914 16h ago

Oddly enough I have a Pixel 9 pro and I don't feel I have had to "fuck around with it" to get it to do its job. I do have to occasionally go in and adjust the photo settings but other that that it's been a breeze.

→ More replies (1)

15

u/pixelatedtrash 15h ago

Yeah, the idea that you need to not be tech savvy to enjoy iOS is one of the stupidest takes Ive ever heard. I’m a devops engineer, i know my way around tech and my first smartphones were all android. You know why I finally switched? I couldn’t keep myself from constantly switching ROMs and flashing new kernels. My phone became a mini home lab instead of a phone.

The folks hollering the loudest about “customization!” always crack me up too. They show you what they’ve done to it and they haven’t customized shit.

Real “tech savvy” people know the real secret is to use what you like, what works for you, and leave people alone. The need to try and denigrate others because they like something different from you is so damn childish

Same. I have 2 different linux home servers running. I used to love tinkering with phones, and I've owned Android, iPhone, pre-iOS and Android smartphones, used to jailbreak my iPhones, etc. These days I just want everything to seamlessly work and having all of my files, phone calls, and messages on all of my devices without having to setup anything third party is one less thing to worry about when I have too much shit to worry about already.

3

u/nyafu_ 14h ago

same. i run linux on my pc and opensource software on all my tech but my phone stays uncracked because i want at least one ONE thing that works without extensive troubleshooting

2

u/Bran-Bran-Muffin 7h ago

Same, former electronics tech, current electrical engineer and software developer here. They are confusing tech savvy vs someone who uses their devices as a toy. I do all my work and designing on Mac and IOS, I cannot even count the number of gripes I’ve never considered making compared to the windows/google/android users I work with and have to listen to them bitch on a daily basis.

2011 ass conversation lol

2

u/-Morning_Coffee- 17h ago

I switched because there was no answer (in 2016) to Guided Access in the Android ecosystem.

My kids would accidentally lock the phone and end up calling 9-1-1 from the lock screen. The only apps I could find at the time was “display mode”, but that severely limited functionality.

Guided Access allows them full access inside a game, but completely prevents exiting the game, even blocking advertising/store redirects.

6

u/Former_Mobile3101 16h ago

I mean thats cool and all but is that really something new? Some of the features you mention sound newish for that time but parental controls have been around since at least the late 90s.

Apple does the same thing as musk does all the time. They buy up some new feature thats gaining popularity before it really gets out there. Then implements it into IOS and claims that they came up with it. The swipe to text feature thats on every smart phone now, they claimed that it was a brand new thing when it had been out for at least 2 years prior on other devices. Siri was actually on Google play before it was on the iphone 4.

4

u/Obvious-Water569 17h ago

So it sucks because... *checks notes* it's easy to use?

5

u/larz_owen 17h ago

It sucks because its limited in its customization and there for its capabilities. Also its typically 3 years behind on tech

2

u/tgwombat 16h ago

It’s a phone. I just need it to do phone stuff. I use a computer when I need to do computer stuff.

2

u/Obvious-Water569 17h ago

I'll let you in on a secret. The overwhelming majority of people don't want to customise their phone beyond maybe changing their wallpaper. iOS offers that and more. If you do want full fine grain control of every possible facet of the system then sure, iPhones probably aren't for you. That doesn't mean they suck.

And while I do agree they're rarely the first with new features, their execution is usually the best in the market. I'd rather wait a year or two and get a really polished, well thought out implementation.

Also, nothing even comes close to the performance of Apple's silicon. Their chips from three years ago still dog-walk flagship chips from other vendors today.

Sunspot, completely normal. Basically, a patch of cooler surface temperature due to concentration of magnetic flux at that region that inhibits convection (transfer of heat).

Just a word of caution, your camera lenses act as a magnifying glass and Sun rays can be incredibly destructive when concentrated to a very small point. In other words, you can easily destroy your camera's sensor irreversibly

Well not that perfect, it has a little black spot on it! 🤭

2

u/xSonicspeedx2 20h ago edited 20h ago

Well yeah, but that makes it even cooler. It’s like an art piece honestly. It’s got layers of discovery.

If you saw that on a canvas in an art museum you might initially just dismiss it as something very stupid and basic. Then you might notice the black spot. Then you might eventually realize it’s actually a photo. Then you might wonder what the photo is. Then you might eventually make the connection that it is a photo of the sun.
