Why Ontario needs a lemon law—my new car has been at the dealership for over 300 days, I had to file a lawsuit, and the dealership sued me back.

A few months after I leased a new 2025 Volvo EC40 from Carling Motors in Ottawa, it suddenly suffered a serious propulsion-system failure and left me stranded.

The dealership kept it for 43 days, returned it, and another fault appeared five days later. That became a long series of recurring issues, charging failures, mechanical noises, unsuccessful repairs, and unresolved safety concerns. My vehicle has now spent more than 300 days at the dealership.

But the lease payments never stopped. Neither did the insurance, fuel costs for the gas-powered loaner, or disruption to my family. My documented losses and costs tied to this ordeal now exceed $31,000.

I tried to resolve it through the dealership, Volvo Car Canada, its financing company, regulators, and elected representatives. Eventually, I had to file a lawsuit to seek a resolution that would not force me to absorb the loss. Carling Motors responded with a counterclaim for use of their loaner, despite acknowledging in writing that issues with my vehicle remain undiagnosed and unrepaired.

Here's why every Ontario driver should care: our province has no automatic remedy when a new vehicle repeatedly fails or spends months in warranty service. There is no point at which the manufacturer must finally provide a refund, replacement, or financially complete lease termination. The consumer can be forced to keep paying, risk their credit, or else have to finance their own lawsuit against a multinational automaker.

The proposed Bill 91, Right to Repair Act, 2025, recognizes the problem, but its current version still leaves consumers going to court and does not clearly reimburse lessees for all their losses.

I created the 30 Days Is Enough petition asking Ontario to guarantee:

  • Automatic eligibility when a vehicle undergoes three unsuccessful repairs for the same defect or remains out of service for 30 cumulative days during the warranty period.
  • The consumer’s choice of a comparable replacement vehicle, full repurchase, or penalty-free lease termination.
  • Reimbursement of down payments, lease or finance payments attributable to the loss-of-use period, and other reasonable expenses.
  • Automatic suspension of lease or finance payments and protection from adverse credit reporting when a vehicle remains in warranty service beyond a defined period.
  • Prompt access to complete repair records and other information needed to understand the vehicle’s condition.
  • A fast, affordable, and binding enforcement process backed by meaningful penalties.

Dealerships and manufacturers should not be able to drag out repairs indefinitely while consumers are forced to pay.

If you agree, please take a minute to sign and share my petition:

Three hundred days is absurd. Thirty days is enough.

Would you pay $19k for a K24-swapped 1988 Esprit Turbo?

Hey everyone, looking for some advice before I pull the trigger on this car.

I found a 1988 Lotus Esprit Turbo with a Honda K24 swap, and the seller is asking $19,000 firm.

I checked it out in person yesterday. Overall, I really like the car, but I’m not sure if the price makes sense.

Here’s what I know:

  • K24 swap was completed in 2025
  • Seller has a bunch of photos documenting the build
  • Suspension bushings have all been replaced
  • No visible cracks in the body
  • Interior is okay, but nothing special
  • Mileage is unknown
  • Transmission seems fine
  • Handbrake and windshield wipers don’t work
  • The seller did a lot of the work himself
  • Do not have an AC

One thing I’m trying to figure out is the title. The Wisconsin title was issued in July 2026, after the engine swap, but it doesn’t say “Street Modified.” I asked the DMV about it, but I haven’t gotten a definitive answer yet.

The seller says the price is firm, so I’m trying to figure out whether this is actually worth $19k or if I’m getting carried away because I like the car.

Guys. I have a 2025 Integra A-Spec T. It has the CVT. Love everything about the car. But I hate the CVT. Tried my best to get used to it but I just can’t. I hate it. I’m looking mostly at a TLX A-Spec or a Lexus IS350. Would love some feedback/ opinions. Its a daily driver in Los Angeles so I don’t want a manual. My weekend car is a 93 Miata.

Honda HRV EXL or Mazda CX-5 2.5 Preferred

Hey everyone, I was doing a little research on my next purchase. Came across these two brands and trims that I’m interested and have the budget to go for. Now I can’t really decide( both look genuinely good to me). I personally use cars to get to work. There are occasions where I travel to multiple states so a few hundred miles are common. Can anyone who knows the car industry give me any insights on these two brands? How they run on highways and fuel economy, etc? Much appreciated!

1997 RAV4 vs 2003 Lexus GX470?

Need help making a decision. My 2014 Jeep Cherokee is finally having transmission issues (150k miles) and I know it’s only a matter of time before she needs to be put to bed.

In the meantime im trying to decide between these 2 vehicles, I don’t even need the car to get to work because I bike but I do like to take occasional trips to visit friends in San Francisco and Los Angeles from Monterey. I will be moving from Monterey to Newport RI in 6 months and need to consider that as well. Honestly just want a car that’ll last me another 5-10 years, I hate car payments.

Feels like I either buy the RAV4 and sell it right before I move, or buy the Lexus now and take her the distance for the cross country trek and probably another one down the future (military). Wondering if anyone has experience with these vehicles.

Cool looking 90's sports coupés in Europe below 11000 EUR?

Any cool looking manual sports coupés below 11000 euros that can run at least 8-10 more years (so under 200, 000 or more only if it's a tough engine), in decent shape and with decent repairability? What models fit this requirement?

I want to drive my car myself. I don’t want my car to brake for me, stay in my lane for me, shift for me, anything I can avoid. Let me know what my best options are.

Traffic commuter car

I live in LA and have a shit commute at the moment. 12 miles one way but bumper to bumper on the way home so it takes me an hour. It moves in the morning; typically 25-30 min of freeway driving. I’m currently in a 2016 golf which I’ve enjoyed but am starting to think about potentially getting something else because we can charge for free at work and i have the hookup to charge at home. It’s costing me over $70 to fill up these days. Any thoughts? Hybrid, regular or full electric? I usually do CPO. I have two large dogs but they fit fine in my golf now lol. Open to suvs or hatches. Pretty open ended because I’d like to hear opinions! TIA.

2007 Honda Accord 200k miles? ($2500)

bad credit so I can't finance without getting an awful rate and I'm moving somewhere in the next 15 days that requires a commute. Getting a mechanic to take a look at it before purchasing but just want some advice.

Is this a car I should avoid?

if the mechanic checks it out and everything looks good, i have some questions

Questions like,, should I negotiate a lower price, buy & then upgrade the car, or just save for something better with having no car payment. Thanks!

Alternative to the subaru outback awd touring xt

• Upvotes

Im looking for recommendations for a new car. I attempted to purchase the outback touring AWD through subaru Australia, and it was nothing but a nightmare. I never did get the car. So im looking for something similar that isnt a subaru.

-budget up to 75k

-- prefer AWD that is actually an AWD not a gimick to handle the terrain/wet winding roads

- large enough boot for family camping trips and travel

- i do like manuals, but they are very scarce these days.

-no ev recommendations please

Thanks in advance

what would be a reliable but new-ish car to buy for mostly suburban driving, stop-start-park type of short distance driving. ideally some type of Toyota. probably 2018 or 2019 so I do not need to take it back to a dealership to service every year which is costly.

Advice on 2nd car

• Upvotes

Currently with a Hyundai elantra gt, looking to maybe get myself a new car. I definitely want one with pop up headlights because I find them silly but love the look regardless, and I want to be able to use it as a daily driver without many issues, so it needs to be reliable. I was thinking a c4 corvette or a miata, but want to hear more opinions. Budget is below 10k as I only have about 20k to my name on a dominos employee budget.

Car buying questions

So I am currently looking for a new car I’m looking for something classy semi luxury car from the 2000s-2013 and was wondering does anyone count Acura or Lexus or even Volvo and Volkswagen as luxary I live in the southern United States so where I am the thing considered Luxary are the giant pavement princess trucks but I prefer cars and would prefer a Luxary or classy car that would pair well with wearing nicer clothes that wouldn’t look out of place in a upper middle class area so far I’ve looked at Audi A4 and A3 aswell as a Volvo S60 and a Volkswagen CC and Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg but also want to know if the Japanese “Luxary” brands like Acura and Lexus were considered Luxary aswell or if Volkswagen even counts because where I am any German car is considered Luxary

2022 Model 3 SR, 57k miles, paid off, worth ~$24k — sell now or keep driving it?

I have a 2022 Model 3 Standard Range with 57k miles. It's fully paid off and I'm getting around $24k for it. The car is almost 6 years old and my worry is that the value falls off a cliff from here, so I'm debating selling now while it's still worth something.

The replacement would be a new Model Y Premium RWD (the 357-mile max-range trim)

Questions for owners who've been through this:

  1. If you kept a Model 3 past year 5, what did the value actually do between years 5–8? Steady slide or a real drop?
  2. Any big repair bills or battery degradation surprises after 60k miles?
  3. Anyone sell around this point and regret it — or glad they got out when they did?
  4. Does having battery warranty left (mine runs to 100k miles) actually prop up what buyers will pay?

Not in a rush and I still like the car — just trying to figure out if there's a smart window to sell in, or if that's a myth. Based in California if that changes the market math.

Used sporty, reliable cars around or under $30k?

I recently bought a 2023 4runner TRD premium lunar rock in January. I wanted something to off road and something I’d be able to have for a long time as a daily. Also the cargo space was a big deal for me coming from an old BMW sedan. Then, a few months ago my dad told me he wanted to give me the family’s old 1998 4runner in a few months… Thanks dad, probably would’ve bought a cheaper car had I known this.

So anyways, I’m now looking for a daily that’s more fuel efficient, reliable, sporty, and has AWD since I live in the northeast USA and the winters here are no joke.

I would want the car to be under $30k, but am willing to go a little higher for the right car. My current car only has around 22k miles on it and it’s paid off so I’m thinking I can get around $47k trade in based on current comps. I’m looking to buy a house in the next few years, so the extra money I get from the 4runner would go straight to my house fund.

TLDR: Wanting to trade my 2023 4Runner in for a more fuel efficient, reliable, sporty, AWD car around $30k now that I’m inheriting a 1998 4Runner. Any ideas on what I should be looking at?

Need a sedan for traveling for work.

Hello! As my caption says I’m looking for a sedan to purchase for work. I’ll be keeping my paid off truck for 4x4 during nasty winter days, but I’m looking for a sedan that can take a ton of miles and provides great fuel economy. I’m looking for something cheap but reliable if that even exists these days. I’ve looked at Nissan Sentra… not seen the best reviews and was disappointed that the new civics don’t exactly have great reviews either. What are y’all’s thoughts?
