Why Ontario needs a lemon law—my new car has been at the dealership for over 300 days, I had to file a lawsuit, and the dealership sued me back.

A few months after I leased a new 2025 Volvo EC40 from Carling Motors in Ottawa, it suddenly suffered a serious propulsion-system failure and left me stranded.

The dealership kept it for 43 days, returned it, and another fault appeared five days later. That became a long series of recurring issues, charging failures, mechanical noises, unsuccessful repairs, and unresolved safety concerns. My vehicle has now spent more than 300 days at the dealership.

But the lease payments never stopped. Neither did the insurance, fuel costs for the gas-powered loaner, or disruption to my family. My documented losses and costs tied to this ordeal now exceed $31,000.

I tried to resolve it through the dealership, Volvo Car Canada, its financing company, regulators, and elected representatives. Eventually, I had to file a lawsuit to seek a resolution that would not force me to absorb the loss. Carling Motors responded with a counterclaim for use of their loaner, despite acknowledging in writing that issues with my vehicle remain undiagnosed and unrepaired.

Here's why every Ontario driver should care: our province has no automatic remedy when a new vehicle repeatedly fails or spends months in warranty service. There is no point at which the manufacturer must finally provide a refund, replacement, or financially complete lease termination. The consumer can be forced to keep paying, risk their credit, or else have to finance their own lawsuit against a multinational automaker.

The proposed Bill 91, Right to Repair Act, 2025, recognizes the problem, but its current version still leaves consumers going to court and does not clearly reimburse lessees for all their losses.

I created the 30 Days Is Enough petition asking Ontario to guarantee:

  • Automatic eligibility when a vehicle undergoes three unsuccessful repairs for the same defect or remains out of service for 30 cumulative days during the warranty period.
  • The consumer’s choice of a comparable replacement vehicle, full repurchase, or penalty-free lease termination.
  • Reimbursement of down payments, lease or finance payments attributable to the loss-of-use period, and other reasonable expenses.
  • Automatic suspension of lease or finance payments and protection from adverse credit reporting when a vehicle remains in warranty service beyond a defined period.
  • Prompt access to complete repair records and other information needed to understand the vehicle’s condition.
  • A fast, affordable, and binding enforcement process backed by meaningful penalties.

Dealerships and manufacturers should not be able to drag out repairs indefinitely while consumers are forced to pay.

If you agree, please take a minute to sign and share my petition:

Three hundred days is absurd. Thirty days is enough.

Considering an Amphicar as a daily driver. Anything I should know?

• Upvotes

Looking at replacing my current daily ('17 Ram 1500) with a 1960s Amphicar. I live in Naples FL and my commute is about 20 minutes by road over the summer, but during the winter/'season' it takes over an hour due to snowbirds and tourists. I could potentially cut that down by taking the canals.

There's a boat ramp about 3 minutes out of my way leaving the house, and another just a block from my office downtown, so logistically it seems pretty straightforward. I'm a little concerned about getting wet, but I bought a poncho from Walmart that fits over my suit, so I think I've addressed that.

Anyone here daily one? Curious about reliability, maintenance costs, and whether 43 hp is enough for days I don't feel like taking the water.

I'd ideally like to get 10 to 15 years out of it.

Not interested in financing. Thanks.

Would you pay $19k for a K24-swapped 1988 Esprit Turbo?

Hey everyone, looking for some advice before I pull the trigger on this car.

I found a 1988 Lotus Esprit Turbo with a Honda K24 swap, and the seller is asking $19,000 firm.

I checked it out in person yesterday. Overall, I really like the car, but I’m not sure if the price makes sense.

Here’s what I know:

  • K24 swap was completed in 2025
  • Seller has a bunch of photos documenting the build
  • Suspension bushings have all been replaced
  • No visible cracks in the body
  • Interior is okay, but nothing special
  • Mileage is unknown
  • Transmission seems fine
  • Handbrake and windshield wipers don’t work
  • The seller did a lot of the work himself
  • Do not have an AC

One thing I’m trying to figure out is the title. The Wisconsin title was issued in July 2026, after the engine swap, but it doesn’t say “Street Modified.” I asked the DMV about it, but I haven’t gotten a definitive answer yet.

The seller says the price is firm, so I’m trying to figure out whether this is actually worth $19k or if I’m getting carried away because I like the car.

Cool looking 90's sports coupés in Europe below 11000 EUR?

Any cool looking manual sports coupés below 11000 euros that can run at least 8-10 more years (so under 200, 000 or more only if it's a tough engine), in decent shape and with decent repairability? What models fit this requirement?

1997 RAV4 vs 2003 Lexus GX470?

Need help making a decision. My 2014 Jeep Cherokee is finally having transmission issues (150k miles) and I know it’s only a matter of time before she needs to be put to bed.

In the meantime im trying to decide between these 2 vehicles, I don’t even need the car to get to work because I bike but I do like to take occasional trips to visit friends in San Francisco and Los Angeles from Monterey. I will be moving from Monterey to Newport RI in 6 months and need to consider that as well. Honestly just want a car that’ll last me another 5-10 years, I hate car payments.

Feels like I either buy the RAV4 and sell it right before I move, or buy the Lexus now and take her the distance for the cross country trek and probably another one down the future (military). Wondering if anyone has experience with these vehicles.

Honda HRV EXL or Mazda CX-5 2.5 Preferred

Hey everyone, I was doing a little research on my next purchase. Came across these two brands and trims that I’m interested and have the budget to go for. Now I can’t really decide( both look genuinely good to me). I personally use cars to get to work. There are occasions where I travel to multiple states so a few hundred miles are common. Can anyone who knows the car industry give me any insights on these two brands? How they run on highways and fuel economy, etc? Much appreciated!

I want to drive my car myself. I don’t want my car to brake for me, stay in my lane for me, shift for me, anything I can avoid. Let me know what my best options are.

Starlet as a first car

Im looking to buy my first car at the moment and saw this.
The owner wants about €3750 for it.
He claims he has changed his oil every 5k km and always maintained it with the instruction guide.
It only has 78k km and he claims it’s rust free.
What do you guys think should I bid like 3k or will that still be kinda overpaying?

Toyota Hyryder S Strong Hybrid for Family – Suggestions?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m planning to buy the Toyota Hyryder S Hybrid for my family and would appreciate your suggestions.
Is the S variant worth buying?
How are the real-world mileage, rear-seat comfort and boot space?
Are there any important missing features or drawbacks?
Is it good for long-term ownership, and should I buy now or wait for the facelift?
My priorities are family comfort, safety, mileage and reliability.
Would you recommend it, or are there better alternatives in the same budget?

Uniqie looking cars in the EU that you don't have to overpay a lot for?

• Upvotes

Any cars in good condition costing up to 11k euros in the EU (can be a car from any country)?

I like 90s sports coupes but you have to overpay for them being old. Is there something that stands out but is a good choice for the price, either new or old? So overpaying a little is okay but not an insane amount.

Loved my Golf for 6 years, but it's time to upgrade. What should I buy for 30–40k euros?

• Upvotes

I've been looking to change my car. It will be my second car as I have been driving the 2020 MK7 Golf 1.5 TSI 96kw 130HP Manual for almost 6 years. Bought it new and have been very impressed with it. Have only driven under 40k kilometres over the years as most of my driving is between home and work, sometimes to the countryside (under 50km trips), only a few longer trips to other countries (under 1k kilometres each).

Golf was very good to me, decently fun, very spacious, yearly inspections weren't too expensive and overall not a lot of issues. I'm not a fan of how low it is, since I often drive on roads with large potholes and I often feel my underside scraping whenever I drive on countryside roads. Love how it looks, love the infotainment system (decent screen with Android auto), most of what I need is controlled with physical buttons. AC has always been very weak and has been a hindrance in the summers (weak acceleration with AC blasting on max). It has handled itself well during harsh winters and on longer trips to other countries.

My budget is 30-40k euros new. I would prefer something similarly reliable as my Golf was and cheapish to maintain. Not opposed to Hybrid or Electric, since there is a 5k euro compensation by the government for purchase of a fully electric vehicle, charging it wouldn't be an issue. I don't need a lot of space, but I also don't want a car that is huge and has little space inside (be that passenger space or the trunk). Not a fan of fully digital infotainment systems, I like physical buttons for things that I might access frequently like climate control, but it's not a must. Looks are kinda important to me, but I would compromise if the car is worth it.

I would appreciate any suggestions or any tips, I have mostly zero experience in the vehicle world, so I am not totally sure what to look out for. Thank you

Looking at replacing my older truck. Gas or Diesel? Mid or full size?

• Upvotes

My 2009 f150 platinum 4wd 5.4 lifted on 35/22’s. I really like my truck but gas mileage (11) and the small repair things are making think it’s time to replace. Asking for opinions. Two things : I drive around 300-500 miles a week for my job and want 4wd with possibly oversized tires. Currently drive a car for daily and my son drives the truck. I was thinking of giving him the car and getting a newer truck for myself. Thank you in advance for the input!

Honda Civic or Mercedes c300?

Hi so I want some opinions because I am thinking of buying a 2023 Civic EHEV LX or a 2019 Mercedes C300
The civic has 65k km while the Mercedes have 79k km

Both are priced the same and I will not be financing it

What are your opinions because I am very close to buying one and I am in a dilemma. On one end I want a car that’s reliable and won’t cost so much maintaining it. On the other end the Mercedes is just so cool in luxury. I live in Australia if that matters
