Cringe My sister and I were the flower girls. We celebrated by dragging my sister around on the dance floor by her pantyhose…
Luckily the bride and groom (aunt and uncle) had a good sense of humor about it. Sorry for the potato quality it’s like a quadruple screenshot.

If those pantyhose survived the ritual, they should use this as an ad ASAP

Why do we all have memory’s of some long lost brown floored dimly lit family event? wtf is this building and why is it in every city?

it's wild, it looks exactly like the places two of my uncles had their wedding receptions in the 90's

This isn’t wedding shaming it’s hilarious

u/SquidTheRidiculous 12d ago
Real. Nothing wrong with this as long as the kids behaved during the ceremony, first dance, etc. weddings are meant to be fun for everyone.

u/SweetTaterette 12d ago
Apparently some people there were highly offended!

u/Alternative_Year_340 11d ago
I hope they mellowed out. Weddings are a dime a dozen; having something outrageous happen is what’s memorable.
Like, does anyone even care who wins when the Jamaican bobsled team is running?

My best memories are of the many family weddings, anniversaries, whatever the special day was, always at the local VFW hall, in the 70's. When my brothers had to wear a suit they would unbutton the jacket and run up and down the long hallway, trying to mimic all the cops and detectives in their big chase scenes from all the TV shows back then. Bonus if you had clicky shoes;)

This is exactly why we wanted kids at our wedding, they make it fun and memorable. A little under 15% of our wedding was kids. Maybe 25 kids?
I wouldn't trade my 2 year old cousin walking up to our sweetheart table during the meal to hand us 2 balloons for anything. Or my nephew doing his best to walk down the aisle. Or the adorable babies bopping with their little noise canceling headphones.
Too many people just have no sense of whimsy or fun.

u/honeyandwhiskey 12d ago
I couldn’t pick between two of my friend’s adorable sons for ring bearers, so I had two ring bearers. Eight years later and my teammate from college and my old goth club buddy (the moms) are still friends and get their boys together for play dates. I couldn’t be happier with that outcome!
53
u/full07britney 12d ago
My 2 year old godchild and her 5 year-old sister were our flower girls. When the 2 yr old got to the end of the aisle, she literally spiked the flower basket to the ground and took off running to her waiting grandparents. Hilarious then, hilarious now!

u/spironoWHACKtone 12d ago
I’m pretty sure I only got a cupcake at my wedding because my 7 y/o cousin saved me one, those things were very popular and got DEVOURED by the guests within minutes. We also did a photo guestbook with Polaroid cameras, which were immediately commandeered by various children, and the photos they took are honestly pretty hysterical. It really wouldn’t have been the same without them.

I’m so embarrassed that I wanted a child free wedding. Now that I have my own kids I understand how horribly inconsiderate that was to guests and how stupid it was. Adults behave way worse than kiddos.
Luckily some people ignored the no kids request and brought them anyways 😂

My son’s wedding this past summer? Our six grandchildren found the dress ups under the bride’s family home’s staircase. All of a sudden, they were on the dance floor with the most outrageous wigs, tutus, hats, scarves, the whole enchilada. The bride’s mother was laughing her head off and told me how adorable my grandchildren were and how happy she was that they were in attendance. So. Much. Fun! (The bride ordered a bounce house for them. We hardly saw them all night long.)

u/Butterfly_of_chaos 12d ago
I find the idea of child-free weddings repulsive. A wedding is an event where families meet and merge, new friendships are made, and I don't understand the concept of banning children from this experience. Before I read it on the internet I didn't even know child-free weddings exist (I'm European).
Then, children also bring so much fun, and they also enjoy a good party. I mean, there's cake, there are other children, and the party even has a beautiful princess (= bride).

u/short_cuppa_chai 11d ago
In my job, I sometimes have to do trainings on cross-cultural communication. One of the things we cover is the difference between surface culture and deep culture. The question of whether or not children belong at weddings is an example of deep culture and it can absolutely bring up uncomfortable feelings like you describe. I also think that weddings are events for the whole family and I have the same uncomfortable knee-jerk reaction when I encounter the idea of child-free weddings. It's because I have a cultural idea abour the function of weddings, and excluding an entire group of people from them runs contrary to my cultural expectation. Different cultures have different ideas about things, and I've learned to temper my knee-jerk response. But it's still there!

Repulsive is a strong word for someone else’s choice that doesn’t affect you. And I’m saying that when my upcoming small wedding is going to be more kids than adults.
Everyone has their own reasons and motivations, and it doesn’t make them “repulsive.”
6
u/SunMoonTruth 12d ago
They said the idea was repulsive, not the people.
7
u/Academic_Flatworm752 12d ago
My comment doesn’t really make the distinction (see how I mention the choice being “repulsive” first?) so yours changes absolutely nothing about what I said…. 🤣
8
u/Butterfly_of_chaos 12d ago
I'm not an English native speaker, the German term I was thinking about was "abstoßend", and I was indeed thinking a lot about what English term to use. I wanted to express a level of disgust, where I absolutely don't like something, as I find it weird in a very bad way, but not to that extent where I'd need a bucket to vomit into. So maybe "disgusting" would have fit better? Or do you have any better suggestions?
But yeah, it was about the idea, not the people. The people … I don't care about them, they can do, what they want, that's none of my business, but I don't think we would be close friends.
6
u/clintonclonemachine 12d ago
May be more of a cultural difference than a word meaning. In the states at least, one doesnt find someone throwing a party their own own way a repulsive act, thats reserved for something actually gross or something that hurts someone. Wed use off-putting maybe, its much milder. Knowing you're german makes the repulsive word choice make a lot more sense.
7
u/Butterfly_of_chaos 12d ago
There's of course a huge cultural difference involved. I'm also not German, but Austrian. But we're also a direct culture.
From what I see in the US children and adults seem to be treated like different species who need different habitats, which is not so much the case here. An event like a wedding is a great chance for a child to learn about the world, make new experiences and learn how to operate in different situations. Of course the adults also need to adapt a bit and provide some free space where the children also can relax and run around after the part where they had to sit still.
But on the other hand there are also not so many marriages here, as we aren't so much into marrying any more.
7
u/clintonclonemachine 12d ago
Yeah, here my impression is that lpeople can be very protective and the adults would feel the need to be more "buttoned up" or on good behavior with them around. Idk i think thats more a recent thing. I remember liking when the adults were silly as a kid. Sorry for assuming you were german, my bad
5
u/Butterfly_of_chaos 11d ago
No problem, how could you have known? Germany has ten times our population, so it also would have been ten times more likely me being German. ;-)
3
u/crazypurple621 11d ago
Repulsive in English gives the connotation of "wouldn't touch this with a ten foot pole". Words that maybe better describe this feeling in English are ridiculous, absurd, or possibly entitled.

Ah, those were the days ❤️
My sister got married similar time period judging by the fashion. I was eight and they got video of me loudly swearing to myself as I tried to untie a balloon. There's a reason ppl don't like kids at weddings 😕
51
u/Okeydokey2u 12d ago
No way, this is the reason I insisted on kids being invited to mine. They truly make it memorable. No one remembers shit from boring pintrest weddings. I would have this picture framed 😂

You're a good egg.
Personally, I spent years wishing I hadn't been invited because of that footage...

Don’t be too hard on yourself. Idk if your family has made you feel embarrassed for it, but you were just being a kid! You could have done soooo much worse. No property destruction, no injuries, no insults, no tantrums. A lot of people would just chuckle and move on if that happened at their wedding

I miss these weddings. Baked chicken. Rigatoni in a fireball or social hall.
Screw drivers and fuzzy navels.
These were so much fun. I can’t remember the last time I went to a fun wedding.

See shit like this is why kids should absolutely be welcomed at weddings. I don't have kids and I don't really like kids that much, but my friends' little girl sauntering across the dance floor in giant novelty sunglasses, only to stop to peer over the giant sunglasses and stick her tongue out at my mother while she took her picture was just some A+ laughs.

There’s nothing wrong with a child free wedding. I enjoy kids, I have some of my own now but I wanted a night where adults could adult and not have to worry about watching their kiddos for a night. They could let loose and have fun. And everyone did!

I think it's great to have kids at weddings. My daughters were flower girls in two weddings when they were kids. They looked so sweet and had a lot of fun dancing at the receptions.
But I wouldn't approve of that behavior at a wedding reception. That's obnoxious, obviously trying to get everyone's attention, not very respectful of your sister on the floor or anyone in the room. Were you drunk?
9
u/SweetTaterette 11d ago
I posted it in weddingshaming as cringe because obviously it was problematic and wild. We were 4 or 5 years old in this so ummmmm no we were not drunk.

u/Historical_Cook3366 10d ago
Well, I can only wonder if or when an adult put a stop to it!! Did that happen?
