The Ringer's top 100 ranks Trae Young 64th
Hey all, as a Hawks fan I just wanted to handover the tradition of being outraged at how low The Ringer ranks Trae Young. In previous years we could direct our vitriol at Kevin O'Connor who was notoriously low on Trae but this year it looks like it's Danny Chau.
In previous years they had Trae as a "Coach killer", "Petulant", "Flight risk" and other unflattering labels. I think most of us from the Hawks reddit are rooting for Trae and the Wizards this season. As you are all probably seeing in preseason, Trae is an absolute wizard with the ball and you will be treated to eye-popping assists on a nightly basis. He is criminally underrated.

To be clear, the top 100 is consensus among Ringer staff so please don't get on Danny Chau about this, he just did the write up.
Check this out from 2023:

How dare they!?

In general, anything or player related to the Wizards will be undervalued based on our reputation. Can’t wait for them to prove everyone else wrong.

I know there's the whole budding AJ vs. DP rivalry (and all the annoying pre and post draft "discourse" around it) but I really have a soft spot for and feel a lot of solidarity with the Jazz franchise

Both teams picked a good time to cash in their chips with the new lottery odds. I'm rooting for AD to have a healthy season. That Wiz starting lineup of Trae, Kyshawn, AJ, Sarr and AD is stacked with length around Trae. Bilal off the bench. Tre Johnson knocking down 3s. I guess it's easy for me to be optimistic when I'm not actually a Wizards fan 🤷♂️

They have been Trae haters the whole time. Also, podcasters and analysts and shit are braindead discussing how he had a down year and needs to prove himself again. No dipshit, he had an injury year. He was an all star in the least year he actually participated in.

The Ringer I enjoy as a whole and very entertaining but their basketball takes can be maddening and hilariously inconsistent.
Their Trae hate has always been atrocious..
How some guys who were injured and played even less games than Trae don't get it knocked against them in the rankings let alone some get ranked higher inexplicably instead??..
LaMelo Ball, injured and never done anything of real winning merit until he got high end talent around him last year and still missed playoffs.. then traded away after his 1 actually good season? That guy is 30 places higher than Trae? The same LaMelo whose career FG% is significantly lower than Traes? Trae who gets shit on left and right by these same guys for his FG% and shit diet?? Whose never played a playoff game through 6 years? Whose so injury prone he makes even Kawhi and Embiid seem more reliable??
Jaren Jackson Jr is 20 spots higher? Same near 7 footer who's a joke of a rebounder and isn't a No1 or a No 2 and probably not even a No3 main option for a winnign team , and hasn't done anything towards team success since playing at best 2nd fiddle to Ja and a now clearly underwhelming Griz team?
Just a couple ex. Could list 30 guys Trae should be ahead of hlon them at stupid list.
F**k outa here with their rankings.

Well, to be fair, Trae got traded for CJ McCollum and Cory Kispert, whereas Melo was traded for Naz Reid, an unprotected first, three pick swaps and three 2nds. JJJ got traded for three 1sts. Their contracts had something to do with that but it's pretty clear that Lamelo and JJJ are seen as more valuable in the league

That's literally not the point at all. Sorry can't even meet you halfway on this.
Trade value is a joke in the NBA. Always has been. But especially last 4-5 years. Trade value and player value in terms of money makes zero sense nowadays.
Both of those guys are actually injury prone.
But I think you actually proved my point too because tease value or hat one was traded for should have no value in their rankings here.
Again.. Walker Kessler.. because Lakers overpaid for him means he'l now should be ranked higher? Nope. Sorry illogical

I'm not gonna defend the Walker Kessler ranking, nor am I saying Lamelo should be 30 places higher than Trae. But acting like a players market in trades isn't at least somewhat reflective of how they're valued is absolutely asinine

So why is AD so high? Yet his trade value was buns?
I could go on and on about half this list and counter your trade value talk with the rankings but I don't want to.
The point is.. their rankings and how THEY the Ringer( and other media outlets do for that matter) value players in rankings is inconsistent.

The same AD who was traded for Luka? It's not a perfect corollary, obviously, but it is a data point

He's been traded since Luka trade... Wtf are you talking about?
While we're at it then... Lukas Trade and his value... 1 1st and injured AD?
You again have proved my points.
This a joke man?

It feels like you're willfully misinterpreting my comments, which was just that JJJ and LaMelo are viewed as more valuable assets right now, as evidenced by trades that happened in the same year. I never said trade value EQUALS player value. I just said trade value can be REFLECTIVE of player value. Peace, man.

64th would mean that on average he would be the 2nd to 3rd best player on a team. It's not really that insulting. A few years ago it would be outrageous.

Ha, I actually thought "hey, that's pretty good".
I think he will be really good for this team, he seems to understand that he doesn't need to be the primary offensive generator on this team and can be more of a facilitator and I really like that role for him. Guy that can get a bucket of needed, but focuses mostly on getting guys easy scores.
I could see a 20/12 season for him this year.

Well, nice to see that AJ’s position is majorly ranked as underrated by readers while Boozer is primarily ranked as overrated

We have three top 100 players playing for us this year. Ice Trae, AD, and Dybantsa. Gonna be a fun ass year!

“Trae is an absolute Wizard with the ball”
I’d sure hope so, we paid him 200 million to be here!
