Things To Do Recs // Questions 11 days in USVI + Puerto Rico — which combination?

My wife and I are planning an anniversary trip from around Nov 25–Dec 6 (11 nights). We’re considering the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, but I’m wondering how to structure the trip and which places to choose. We have these options -

  1. USVI: St. Thomas + St. John + St. Croix
  2. USVI: St. Thomas + St. John + Puerto Rico
  3. USVI: St. John + St. Croix + Puerto Rico
  4. St. John + Puerto Rico only
  5. Another combination?

St. John’s beaches seem incredible! We love beaches, hiking, snorkeling, and nature.
What would you choose? Would love advice from people who’ve visited!

General Discussion Really nervous about my trip, I can't sleep

Nothing is going on but trip coming up in a few weeks and I lose sleep over it. I wake up at 3am every day.

I'm really nervous even though I should be excited :(

I'm putting the Virgin islands on a pedestal, maybe it's my fault, and am scared that if it's not the paradise I see in my mind I will feel bad about having spent $10k in a week.

Things To Do Recs // Questions Six couples and a 12 guest listing, who should I charter with in the British Virgin Islands?

Me and five college friends are doing a 15 year reunion trip.

For context, we're all bringing our spouses (so yep, it's good for six couples).

Of course, nobody wants to sleep on the salon couch for a week.

I've found a few powercats listed for 12 guests. Some say six cabins and six heads. But 12 guests doesn't always mean six real double beds.

What should I look for in the berth plan, though? Also, my buddy Dave would be our captain. He's run his dad's 42 foot sailing cat in the Keys for years. Would that be enough for bareboat approval?

Things To Do Recs // Questions Is Virgin Charter Yachts a reputable company?

For context, I'm sending them my sailing resume next week.

But before that, I just wanna know what happens when things break.

How fast does someone show up? Is the boat in good shape at the start? Chartered with them in the last year or two?

Love to hear it.

Resturant Recs // Questions Extra Virgin Bistro St. John

Has anyone been here to eat and how is it? I drove past it on one of my last days on my last trip but didn’t have time to check it out. It looks like a cool vibe. Maybe hidden/upscale?? Just curious to see what it’s like. I’m heading back this spring. I only saw it for about ten seconds while I was driving and holding up the local street traffic but it looked like a spot that might totally fit my family’s food vibe.

General Discussion Standalone rental car insurance, I don't have a stateside policy

Visited St John's last year and provided proof of my stateside car insurance. I'm going again in november, but now I no longer have car insurance here.

Where can I purchase standalone rental car insurance?

Google suggested Rentalcover, Bonzah, Allianz Travel Insurance, Travel Guard...

Anyone have any first-hand experience or suggestions? We are going for about a week and renting a Jeep

Things To Do Recs // Questions Art in St. Thomas and St. John?

We are traveling to St. Thomas and St. John in March and I am wondering what is artsy to see? Thinking like public art, museums, galleries. Anyone recommend where we should go?

Things To Do Recs // Questions Did a sailing cat last time, who is an alternative to The Moorings? Want a powercat now

We did a Moorings sailing cat in 2022 and had a good time. This year we’re four couples and we want a powercat.

What should I compare when looking at smaller local companies? I'd be in charge of the boat, with about eight years of charter trips on my resume.

Moving Recs // Questions Dog transport

Sorry if this is repetitive - I’m looking to transport two large dogs (both >60kg German Shepherd Dogs) from the US mainland to St Croix. From my research, they likely won’t be permitted in the cabin of most airlines, but I hate the idea of putting them into the cargo hold.

Does anyone have a recent experience and/or creative ideas? Thank you very much in advance!

I’ll be coming down the second week of November it’s a spontaneous trip. Looking for possibly a hostel to stay at that has parking as I’m seeing it’s best to rent a car. Also recreational . Where to get or are there dispensaries. Best food. Local shopping.

Local Events USVI Rap Scene

As the title suggests, I’m wondering about the Virgin Islands rap scene. Are there open mics I should look out for? Are there certain venues I should check out?

I’m a hip-hop artist from Florida who just moved to St. Thomas with my wife.

Things To Do Recs // Questions Looking for Tips and Advice

My wife and I will be staying on St. John Island for 6 days in January for our 10 year anniversary and also a belated honeymoon trip. What are some things you all would recommend for more "romantic" or "once in a lifetime" kind of things to do for a couple celebrating? Definitely going to book a swim with dolphins and sea turtles, but as for everything else, it seems like there is too many options and I keep getting side tracked when trying to look things up and I end up having 40 different tabs open on my PC.

Hotel Recs // Questions St John with young kids

We’re doing a trip for my husband and Is 40th birthdays with my parents/siblings/ 3 young children (2, 5, 6) and St. John seems really appealing.

Was thinking renting a car in st Thomas and taking the ferry over. Where would be the best area to stay? There’s a few air bnb in Cruz bay that seem great and that seems to be the most convenient location?

Any other recommendations for traveling there with kids would be great! Thanks so much.

Things To Do Recs // Questions Best way to get to BVI from STT?

We are currently staying on STT and wanted to island hop to BVI at some point. But the ferry website and schedule is so confusing. Any suggestions on the cheapest way to go to BVI for a day? And if that is the ferry, can anyone help me understand the departure times and pricing?

General Discussion How does the barge work? should I book in advance?

First time taking the barge in Red Hook and I'm a little nervous hehe. I read from recent reviews that the staff yells at you/are very mean :(

I also don't know if I should book in advance or buy my ticket once I get there.

What do you guys suggest? :)

Edit: I'm talking about the car ferry

Things To Do Recs // Questions Likely tourism decline with increase in CBP boat confiscations

What's happening with the ramp up in boat confiscations in the Virgin Islands? Definitely likely to impact tourism, especially those who take charters (one instance here, though how many aren't covered in the news no way to tell)

General Discussion STT To Tortola - Ferry Options

I land at STT at 12:15PM and need to get to Road Town in Tortola. I priced a private taxi with Dolphin Water Taxi and its $500/pp roundtrip. Is it worth the price? It seems like the public ferries out of Charlotte Amalie (Road Town Fast Ferry) will be roughly $200/pp roundtrip and have long lines and hidden fees. Anyone have any advice or preferred ferry they would recommend? It's my first trip to the BVIs so looking for any and all advice.

Thanks!

Looking For Friends // Groups Charter boating opportunities to join

We're a late 40s couple, headed to St. John for the first time in January, and would like to do a full day or one/two night boating excursion to explore the more remote places and such with someone that knows good places to hit.

The sites we've found generally have boats for large groups, but there are just two of us. Seen a couple small boat options, but we're social and wouldn't mind making some new friends.

Any suggestions for how to find a group we could potentially join? That has room for a couple more people to help defray cost? Preferably other adults/couples in lieu of families.

Any boating forums that we could post in? Or would we be better off messaging a charter business and asking if they can add us to a group?
