Advice needed! Needle (sometimes) "popping" in groove

Hi all,

Longtime vinyl DJ here (over 25 years), but only recently been having issues with slight tracking or "popping" needles. Happens in particularly bass-heavy records - I can see the needle wobbling and it can handle a lot, but every now and then I'll get a few pops.

My decks are set up correctly, as far as I can tell. Tonearms and decks are level, correct tracking and anti-skate (matching the counterweight). Turntables are Technics 1210 Mk. 2's. Carts are Shure Whitelabels and Styli are the Jico replacements which sound reasonably close to the originals (although I don't think they last quite as long).

This issue has been happening for the last few years, and I initially thought that the Jico's might be the culprits, but I bought a pair of Ortofon Concorde's last year as a spare pair for gigging, and they also encounter the popping, despite being set up correctly.

The craziest thing about all of this is that I never had made any effort to set up my decks properly until a few years ago (getting more serious about sound, etc.), but never encountered any of these issues. My tonearm wasn't level and I was less focused on any of the "so-called" important parts of turntable setup.

Am I missing something here? Overall my setup sounds lovely, but I'm frustrated that certain records that used to play perfectly are now unplayable.

I'd appreciate some advice here from anyone who has dealt with, and hopefully solved, similar issues.

Just got into ripping my vinyl — what's your setup / any tips?

Hey all, I've been collecting records for a while and recently started thinking about ripping some of them. Mostly so I can listen to stuff on the go, but I'm curious what everyone else's reasons are — backup? DJing? Convenience?
My current setup: PLX-500 and PLX-1000 turntables, with an RME Babyface Pro as my interface. So I think I'm covered on the hardware side, but happy to hear if I'm missing something.
For those who've been doing this a while: anything you wish you knew when you started? I keep seeing different opinions on recording levels, file formats, whether stylus condition matters that much, etc.
Also curious — what do you do with the files after ripping? Do you clean them up (click/pop removal, normalization), split tracks, tag metadata, or just leave them raw? I'd love to hear what your workflow looks like from needle drop to finished file.
Thanks!

Help Needed Made a Vinyl DJ assistant app for android and looking for testers!

Like the title says, if you're an android and vinyl dj and think that this functionality would be useful let me know in this thread and I'll send you the Google play store closed test link

Manage your vinyl record collection

Import records from Discogs or add them manually

Detect and track BPM for individual tracks

Create and organise DJ setlists, drag and move tunes, order by BPM, make sure that no two tunes on a single plate are consequtive in setlist.

Generate Smart Setlists and random sets

Track DJ sessions, the app can output a txt with all your tunes timestamped with track name, artist name, label and year (optional) with location, length and genres included.

Back up and restore your data

I know that there is already an app that does this, but I made this for myself and thought I'd share it regardless.

Beatmatching Progress

I do now have my full beginner setup for vinyl (2 reloop 4000 m3d, and an old mixer which i will swap to xone92 at some point). Practiced for a week now.

Ive djed digital for years and practiced pitchriding digitally, but of course, on turntables its just different.

I was wondering if my approach to beatmatch is making sense:

My tactic till now was a mixture of pitch riding and nudging, for example, when i hear that the new track is slower, I first ride the pitch into a faster direction and then find the exact/fine spot by nudging the vinyl until its too fast. So when im close to matching the tracks, I nudge and ride the pitch alternately until the new track is too fast, and then I go back a bit to have the exact spot.

If my explanation is not too confusing, I was wondering if thats the wrong approach, because its a system that doesnt require to fully know to which track is faster, its more of a trial and error kind of way, but I would like to train my ear better instead of having this way of finding the spot. Or does that happen automatically by time on the decks?

I was also wondering what to do if both tracks are almost on time, I never know which one is faster/slower. The fine differences are so hard to assign to the tracks.

I hope what i wrote kinda makes sense, cheers

I’ve been playing vinyl for 30 years, and digging has always been the best part. So I built this: a page that collects the newest records every day.

https://monthlyvinyl.net/

No business model, no data harvesting, no catch. Just listen and dig.

Know a shop that’s missing? Got an idea? Drop me a line. Input and shop tips are very welcome.

How sustainable is it to only DJ vinyl if I am looking to get gigs in the near future?

Hi everyone I’m a 16 year old vinyl DJ and I have to say I love it so much. I got into it because of my Dad and him having a massive collection of records to start with so why not.
But I was wondering if I was trying to get gigs in any bars or (if I’m lucky) clubs/nightclubs will it be harder if I only DJ vinyl? Also been thinking about getting into DVS for songs that aren’t on vinyl but that also requires turntables.
If anyone could help me out please reply 🙂.

Open deck nights in LA

Hi! I was just wondering if anyone knew of any house/techno open deck nights for vinyl djs in the LA area? I have a gig coming up and it's been a while since I played out - looking to get some practice in. Any suggestions greatly appreciated, thanks!

Which vintage tunes get young people (20s & 30s) on the dance floor?

It's not always easy spinning 45s for a younger crowd. I'll start a list of artists that they generally respond to. Feel free to name bands, individual tunes or any other experiences.
ABBA
KC and the Sunshine Band

Big problems with skipping

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m completely new to vinyl and I’m having this issue when back cueing.

My counterweight is set to 3 and anti-skate is at 0.

I’ve tried a slightly higher weight and I’ve tried a higher anti-skate.

My tonearm is parallel to the record.

My speakers are on the same surface as the player but this problem persists when only playing audio through my headphones.

I’ve tried different records.

This is really frustrating as it’s making beatmatching very difficult for me, I really want to enjoy DJing vinyl but at the moment it’s difficult for me.

Is this just a skill issue?

Any advice is appreciated.

(I only have one turntable at the moment)

News True analogue pitch solution for Technics M5G!

Been working on this for a while and think I’ve cracked it….

The M5G is in technical terms, arguably the best 1200 Technics made; better tonearm, better wiring, ±8/16 pitch, no center click and dead spot etc.

Its one flaw is the pitch control.

Unlike every model from MK2 to MK5, which use a continuous analog reference, the M5G reads the fader with a microcontroller ADC (IC501) and synthesizes the speed reference digitally.

This has two consequences: the pitch moves in steps (measured around 0.05-0.06% per step in ±8 mode, roughly double in ±16), and the deck continuously corrects toward its quantized target, which is the "fighting you" feel people complain about when beatmatching.

The TP17 cut isn’t a solution.

The known workaround is cutting one leg of TP17 on the main board. This disconnects the phase-lock correction so the deck feels loose like a MK2.

But TP17 predates the M5G (it exists on the MK2) and doesn't touch the digital circuit at all; it just stops the servo enforcing it. Side effects on the M5G: zero shifts to about 0.3%, everything above roughly 6.3% on the fader does nothing, and the response goes non-linear, even with the little gain pot on the fader PCB maxed.

The discovery:

Comparing the M5G and MK5 service manuals (AD0303062C0 and AD0303064C0) and photos of two boards for sale online, it turns out the M5G main board (REP3461B family) is a dual-build layout.

The entire MK5 analog pitch synthesizer (IC301, an AN6682, plus its passives and the VR301 zero trimmer) exists on the M5G board as empty factory footprints, silkscreened "EXCEPT TO MK5G". Photos of the analog build of the same layout show the AN6682 fitted exactly where the M5G instead fits CN104, the connector to the digital board. The parts absent from the M5G parts list are precisely the MK5's analog pitch BOM. Even the fader connector wiring (conductors 5/6/7/13 on CN102) is identical between models, and the M5G fader network maxes out at ~2.82k against the MK5's 2.875k gain spec.
In other words: Panasonic never removed the MK5 pitch circuit. They just stopped soldering it in.

The mod

Populate the factory footprints with Panasonic's own values, disconnect the digital reference line, restore TP17 id done, calibrate per the MK5 service manual.

The deck then has genuine MK5 analog pitch: continuous, linear, full travel, quartz reset. Better still, with one SPDT toggle you can keep both: stock digital mode (full ±16, display, everything factory) and analog mode (±8, continuous), switchable.

Parts list (per deck, values from the MK5E parts list)
IC301: AN6682 (NOS, 9-pin SIP, the only non-generic part)
VR301: 2k trimmer
R301: 2.7k precision (0.5% metal film works), R302: 470R, R303: 8.2k
C301: 0.033uF film, C302: 6800pF film, C305: 1200pF film
C303: 1uF 50V, C304: 10uF 16V electrolytic
Optional toggle: mini SPDT + 470R
Already fitted on the M5G, don't duplicate: R304-R307, C306, D301, IC302, X201
Tools: soldering iron, basic DMM (ohms + continuity), no scope or counter needed.

Procedure

Unplug from mains, remove platter, get to the main board. Mains is present on the PSU board, treat accordingly.
Confirm your board matches: look for the "EXCEPT TO MK5G" silkscreen and empty pads around the PITCH marking. Early production may differ.

Install the BOM into the factory holes, orientation per the analog-build reference photos.

Continuity-check which CN104 conductor connects to the IC301 pin 4 (FO) pad. That's the digital reference line.
Either lift that conductor (analog-only build), or fit the toggle: IC301 pin 4 bent up and wired to one throw, the lifted CN104 conductor to the other, common into the vacated pin 4 pad. Leave the rest of CN104 connected so the digital board keeps powering the display and buttons.

If you previously did the TP17 cut, re-bridge it. The fighting behavior came from the digital correction, which is now gone in analog mode; bridged TP17 restores proper lock.

Return the fader PCB gain pot to mid if you'd maxed it for the TP17 mod.

Calibration, no counter required

Zero: fader centered, adjust VR301 until the strobe dots freeze completely. The strobe is quartz-driven, so this equals the factory 262.08 kHz setting.
Gain: unplug CN102, DMM in ohms across fader-board terminals 5 and 6, set the fader PCB pot for 2.875k ±0.25k, reconnect.

Verify with DVS or a locked test tone into a tuner app: sweep the fader, confirm linear, full ±8, no steps, no dead zone.

Status: what's confirmed vs open

Confirmed by manuals and board photos: the dual-build layout, the footprint inventory, the exact BOM, connector compatibility.

Not yet bench-verified: whether the reset button still gates quartz zero in analog mode (block diagram says it should, via IC302), whether the fader gain pot's range reaches spec, and behavior on the earliest board revisions.

I'm building this now and will report back but I don’t have an oscillator to properly test, so if anyone does and wants to give this a crack I’d be super grateful.

Usual disclaimer: mains-powered equipment, your deck, all your risk, and this is fully reversible by unstuffing the parts and reconnecting CN104.

Help Needed Slip mat question

My tone arms vertical tracking angle is still too high despite being at 0, and I’ve been told a fix for this could be to get a thicker slip mat.

Stacking two 3mm felt slip mats gets it there, but I was also curious , could I use a cork mat on the bottom that’s around 4mm thick, then a felt slip mat on top? Would the felt grip the cork or does it slip normally for queuing?

Cheers

Help Needed Turntable most similar to the Numark NTX-1000?

Hi y’all, beginner to the vinyl DJ game so will happily take all the advice I can get! Looking to get more into mixing vinyl and I’m trying to figure out what turntable(s) are closest to the Numark NTX-1000, which is what I currently use. Almost impossible to find another numark, so I was hoping some of y’all might have an idea of what turntable is most similar. I was initially thinking the Pioneer PLX-1000, but I’ve got no idea to be honest. Also, is it just plain sacrilege to mix on two different turntables? Thanks y’all!
