No babies for now :(

Sadly our girl dropped her egg sack and is currently chomping away on them 😫

I’m putting it down to husbandry stress as she was still in her shop ā€œenclosureā€ and there isn’t nearly enough substrate for her and she didn’t even have time to burrow :( we hadn’t even looked at her since she dropped eggs on us to minimise stress

At least she can go into her forever home now and hopefully we might go back to the store and get the male she was originally paired with and start again!

Mite advice

Hi friends,

I’m new to this sub, and new to reddit overall. (I have posted this on r/Vivariums but Id like your guys’ opinions too) I’ve recently introduced a springtail culture into my vinegaroons enclosure as she likes it quite warm and humid (because I don’t want mold!). I believe I got some hitchhikers too. They only showed up after I introduced the springtails however may have hitchhiked on my vinny as she is WC.

I’d say I have beginner - intermediate keeper experience as I have been taking care of my vinny alongside some tarantulas and other scorpions. The mites are a first for me however (unless I haven’t seen any up until now!)

From my understanding mites are benifical as they clean up too - so far they have been crawling around spots where my vinny has been eating (I’m assuming there’s some tiny mold growth there) so I believe them to not be directly harmful to my vinny.

My question is when do I need to start being concerned? They have been fine with my springtails so far, both species walking about the feeding area.

Vinegaroon Poop

Should I be spot cleaning my Vinny’s tank? I think I’m starting to notice bits of tan/white droppings that I assume are vinegaroon poop. (Who knew we live in a world where I’d ever get to see that?!)

Advice on how to spot clean without stressing my skittish guy?

New vinegaroon laid eggs help!

Post image
37 Upvotes

So we bought a female vinegaroon just over a week ago, she was plump and it never even crossed my mind she could have eggs.

We’re still awaiting setting her up properly as we wanted her to settle first, and yeah I was about to spray her down and she’s laid her eggs without burrowing.

What do we do? Obviously leave her alone but would they even be fertile? Do I continue to spray her enclosure?

I don’t mind loads of tiny babies but I don’t know the best way to support her during this time!!!

She is still moving slightly as I misted gently from above so I know she’s not dead just deflated after laying!

UPDATE: the eggs are most likely fertile, after speaking with the place I got her from she was paired with the male when the lady got them and she separated them so hopefully we will have some babiesss

Is start up ok? And other questions!

Hi! So I have this little guy, and wondering if this is an ok start up set up for him, and if it's normal that he isn't burrowing yet. He likes to hide in between the bark all the time, it's only been maybe 4-5 days and he has eaten a cricket already and had lots of water. I'm getting a heating pad too, and please ignore the paper towel the holes are too big and need a new topper.

Possible new owner questions?

I have not yet purchased a vinegaroon, but have done tons of research on them housing and feeding wise, but now I'm looking for temperaments and how well they are as pets. And what better place to get information like that than people who have first hand experience? So my questions are, what's it like owning a vinegaroon? Have you ever been sprayed by them, if so how bad does it stink? And how much did it cost you to buy the roon? I'm wanting a standard size vinegaroon, not a giant one.

Is my heating pad placement bad for my vinegaroon?

Everything I saw online said not to put the heating pad where the burrow would be but now she isn't using her deep hide, instead she's burrowing down herself into where the heating pad is which is the exact opposite of what I was told would happen... Should I just move the heating pad to the side where the burrow is?

New little one, looking for advice

I got this little one from a friend. To me, he looks thin. These are the best pictures. Ive managed of the little one. Would it be beneficial to add in fake plants? I see some things that say it needs moisture, and other things that say it needs to be dry. I have all kinds of mosses I could add in. I just wanna make sure the cutie lives to its fullest potential.

Molting humidity questions

Post image
7 Upvotes

My Vinny began its molt back in the beginning of February, I know I need to wait much longer to assume it didn’t survive.

My main concern is that I have been letting the substrate get too dry. I probably mist it about every 4 weeks. I never see the bottom inches get bone dry, but they don’t stay deep dark.

I’m wondering if I effed up and let it get too dry and killed my Vinny. If I didn’t, would it be wise to put a 1-2 inch layer of moistened sphagnum to retain moisture?

Status Check!

Checked on mine for the first time in probably like 7-9 months, didn’t touch it cuz I didn’t wanna disturb it. It didn’t move, but it looks like anatomically okay??? Just fat cuz molting? Please lmk if I should really make sure it’s alive and moving or it looks fine. I don’t trust myself not to somehow stress it out by checking its movement. I have inexplicably lost one I’m worried about bit.

Do vinegaroons hibernate this early?

Post image
11 Upvotes

My beautiful daughter, Carcie, is an adult female of that I’ve owned for ~7 months. She is usually very active. I saw her a little over a week ago, being a lil bulldozer and making her burrow bigger. I put her regular food in earlier this week and she hasn’t eaten it. This is VERY strange for her.

Is she like the pumpkin spice latte and thinks it’s šŸ fall weather šŸ when it is still a sweaty early September? Or am I right to fear the worst (that she has taken the Eternal Hibernation) ?

Enclosures For Baby

Would this be an appropriate enclosure for a 2nd instar vinegaroon or is it too much ventilation/too small?

It's an enclosure I already had and I've been considering a vinny for some time now, though I can easily get something else for one if it's no good.

Edit: Forgot to say, it's Mastigoproctus tohono

Free Vinnie needs a home [NW England]

I live in North West England, UK.

My partner left me with the pets including a female Vinegaroon (unsure of exact species) and I don't know how to care for her plus I am moving away. We used to share this account on Reddit until I changed the password after he made his own. (If you were wondering about why I'm even on here)

I need someone who can pick it up from near my address (probably the train station). You will get the whole enclosure she's in and I haven't seen her for a little while but I know she has the habit of hibernating for months on end. I don't currently have any food for her but apparently my ex said there's isopods in her enclosure so I imagine she's been eating those.

Send me a private message to discuss further.

Vietnamese Vinny Temperatures

Hi all! I have my new vietnamese vinegaroon in my classroom. When I first got him, my classroom a/c disn’t work, so I had no problem keeping things warm and humid. The a/c is now fixed though, and I am concerned about temperature fluctations for my little guy. What temps do you all keep your Vietnamese vinnies at? Everything online is about giants. Thanks in advance!

Hey all, I’m in search of captive bred Giant Vinegaroons preferrably the Texas species. I’m new to vinegaroons but own many tarantulas so not too sure about the reputable breeders for them! Any recommendations help thanks!

Mastigoproctus tohono vs. Mastigoproctus giganteus what are the differences?

Post image
12 Upvotes

So recently I’ve been getting more into Uropygi mainly mastigoproctinae and there’s always one issue I see here in the US hobby relating to these two species let me sum it up for you. WE DO NOT HAVE Mastigoproctus giganteus in any hobby. In the 2018 Mastigoproctus giganteus complex revision the species Mastigoproctus giganteus was split apart into many different species 7 in that one revision. And yet almost all we see are Mastigoproctus ā€œgiganteusā€ whether INaturalist or just looking to buy one. True M. giganteus are only found in few Mexican states (check atlas https://www.inaturalist.org/atlases/144276 ). Whereas M. tohono is only stated to be native in the US state of
Arizona, however it’s likely to be spread onto the western side of New Mexico as well. Adding a 3rd species into the mix here, there seems to be an Undescribed species of Mastigoproctus native to Texas and eastern New Mexico. You’re probably wondering huh without this locality data how am I supposed to tell the species apart let me
Show you there is this small triangle at the front edge on Mastigoproctus species called the carapace epistoma (image pictured) in certain species this is not visible from a dorsal view like M.
tohono or the undescribed species, where as true M. giganteus do indeed have a visible carapace epistoma, yes it’s really this easy to discern them. However this leads a question which I cannot answer as of yet how do you discern the Mastigoproctus tohono and the undescribed species of Texas other than locality data? (Genuine question I don’t know please share if you do)
