I would encourage everyone to just not bother reading or listening to David Brooks, and move on. You aren't missing much.

My favorite David Brooks moment was when some years ago he vented personal issues by complaining that kids these days are spending too much time with their spouses and husbands and wives are not supposed to be friends.

Take him as seriously as he deserves to be taken.

For me it's that whole "bourbon at the airport" saga. Which would have been funny if he'd actually meant it as a joke, but apparently he didn't ... ?

u/pbasch 9h ago

That was the best.

u/brrbles 2h ago

Makes sense. He divorced his wife so he could marry his much younger research assistant.

I saw someone say ‘if Trump toned down his behavior just 20%, David Brooks would give him kudos’.

I think this is 100% true.

8

u/eggoed 9h ago

lol, yea that sounds about right tbh

5

u/dubzzzz20 3h ago

This is absolutely true, and is also true of 90%+ of “never-Trump” Republicans. Which is why they should be treated like a minority which would be nice to have for any Democratic candidate but not one to pander to like the last 3 attempts which has done nothing except ostracize the base of the party.

This will be even more true for the next election when the “never-Trump” Republicans will suddenly have an option who is not Trump.

You mean the guy who told us the Epstein files were like qanon level conspiracy without disclosing that he attended one of Epstein’s dinner parties?

6

u/bearrosaurus 9h ago

David Brooks met the founder of Google at a lunch event to interview him for a New York Times piece. Jeffrey Epstein wandered into the event uninvited but did not speak with Brooks, was not photographed with Brooks.

Acting like this makes him an Epstein collaborator is exactly the type of nonsense that makes the Epstein files feel like qanon bullshit. The NYT kept him and PBS kept him, that should be enough proof for anyone that the Epstein tie was bogus.

There is a negative one billion percent chance that there is an actual David Brooks defender in this comment thread unless he sent them here.

2

u/bearrosaurus 4h ago

I just watch PBS and I’m allergic to bullshit accusations

26

u/zerothirty 9h ago

Brooks also has this constant need to blame a large part of the world’s problems on “left wing academics being mean.”

I’m not sure if he was bullied in college or something but he brings this up in so many totally unrelated columns that it’s hard to miss.

u/Cabezone 8h ago

The people in power are always wanting decorum because they hold all the power and they know violence only works against them, not for them, if the people rise up.

2

u/ViennettaLurker 8h ago

I think theres a non-zero amount of politicos and op ed folks who have developed world views almost solely based on the fact that people yelled and made fun of them on Twitter.

1

u/monsantobreath 5h ago

It's a rhetorical device to ensure the right people are blamed. It works on liberals a lot.

13

u/Brickeshaw 9h ago

💯 lmao David Brooks doesn't even have enough talent to be considered a hack. It's laughable (and suspicious af) that anyone pays him for his "writing"

10

u/it_whispereth_me 7h ago

His whole “intellectual” shtick consists of staking out some anodyne and obvious “centrist” position and then blaming those on the left for being too partisan. It’s so tired and played out.

6

u/eggoed 8h ago

yeah that's part of what i find specifically grating about him. I think he (and those who like him) views himself as some sort of intellectual figure. But he's just ... not.

3

u/phoenix1984 7h ago

Sometimes Brooks makes me nostalgic for what Republicans used to be. In the modern age, he is painfully naive, burying his head in the sand beyond relevance, but he sounds like they did during more stable times. I never thought the Bush years would be something we’d look back on as an improvement over where we are. Not good, not at all, but better than this hot mess.

13

u/eggoed 7h ago

I understand your sentiment for sure, but also part of my disdain for people like Brooks is because I view the Bush years as just a huge part of why we are where we are now. It was, by the standards of the time, such an intellectually and morally bankrupt administration, and IMO it hastened the end of what the Republican Party used to be (not that I was ever a Republican, but I agree with you that the party used to be a LOT better than what it is now ofc). And we can all see what has now taken up occupancy within that empty shell.

IMO people like Brooks were huge enablers of that decline. Like, I'm glad he votes the same way I do now in Presidential Elections, but he's not someone I can respect. There are also just a lot more effective Never Trump Republicans out there right now as well, so thankfully I feel even less of a need to pay attention to him.

u/Bulky_Preparation768 7h ago

This has been the GOP since Nixon

46

u/browster 9h ago

My respect for Bouie just keeps growing. He's an excellent commentator

2

u/lukemcr 3h ago

He's been excellent since his Slate days at least

1

u/cive666 3h ago

Dude gives me actual hope.

I all but stopped listening to most commentators because of how negative everything is. Shit is bad but I don't need to be reminded of trumps ten-thousandth lie or constitution violation.

Bouie just has a way of making feel like its not that bad and that the USA might actually make it out on the other end still functional.

"By all means, compare these shitheads to nazis. Again and again. I'm with you." ~ Mike Godwin (yes Godwin's law Godwin)

30

u/Adjective_Noun_2000 10h ago

You got the quote right but his name is Mike Godwin not Mark.

14

u/DrForester 10h ago

Whoops. Fixed.

6

u/Parametric_Or_Treat 9h ago

I am attributing your screw up to malice

5

u/kwantam 9h ago

Yeah, everyone knows Mark Godwin was a fucking Nazi.

Dear David Brooks, read a dictionary. Ossoff never called anyone a Nazi. He called them "neo-Nazis." David Brooks says these young men have ties to the alt-right and are responsible for vile anti-semetic posts. The definition of neo-Nazi describes any post-World War II militant, social or political movement that seeks to revive the ideology of Nazism in whole or in part. Which is exactly what David Brooks described.

10

u/p4NDemik 9h ago

Its been a while since I've really read much of Brooks stuff but he's such a feelings-driven guy from my recollection and that's all I'm getting from this. Brooks is just uncomfortable with Ossoff's approach and he's expressing that discomfort in a shitty way, by saying Ossoff should back off.

It's misguided. Brooks can talk about extremism in his own way and be effective with a certain audience, and Ossoff can talk about extremism in his own way and also be effective with a different audience.

The people that read The Atlantic looking for Brook's content are largely not the same people voting in Georgia. It's absurd that Brooks feels it necessary to make this criticism, and if he took two seconds, he'd realize he's speaking from an emotional place yet again, not a logical place.

18

u/brphysics 10h ago

Great video -- he makes a good point. I also have to admit I had not seen any of the Ossoff debate and was very impressed by the short clip shown here.

u/chocolateboomslang 10h ago

You guys have two teams, one team for the most part trying to play nice and one team trying to cheat in every way they can. It's time to wake up and see that playtime has been compromised and the rules you think are keeping things running smoothly are just roadblocks to one side, and they're currently planning on removing them.

David Brooks is a moron.

5

u/flpa1060 7h ago

The sitting president lost an election but wouldn't leave office freely. He coordinated enough fake electoral college ballots to steal the election. When Pence wouldn't put them forward as legitimate, he sent supporters into the capitol building to remove Pence. Senator Grassley was then supposed to confirm the fraudulent electoral ballots. Pence not letting Secret Service take him away literally stopped Republicans overthrowing our government.

3

u/chocolateboomslang 7h ago

Right, but be polite to them.

What a doofus that guy is.

6

u/CaptainSkel 7h ago

The trend I always see from republicans is assuming the Dems are being hyperbolic out of the belief that there would be consequences for the people the Dems are criticizing if they were telling the truth.

“Obviously they aren’t actually Nazis because if they were Nazis the Republicans wouldn’t be associating with them.”
“Obviously Trump isn’t really a felon because if he was a felon people wouldn’t have voted for him.”

3

u/Imsleepy83 9h ago

David Brooks is, and always has been, a giant wanker.

2

u/strolpol 5h ago

Brooks should cut back on the double whisky lunches

4

u/Jmac439 8h ago

The people who say “don’t call them Nazis” always have the same dumb argument: it’s too mean to say that!

7

u/phoenix64mbr 9h ago

People call me hyperbolic or that I exaggerate when I equate warehouse prisons and concentration camps, ICE with the Gestapo and Steven Miller with Adolf Eichman. I felt vindicated watching this. It's true. They've always been here.

4

u/daddydrank 7h ago

I used to have a shoestring of respect for David Brooks before, but this is just idiotic, at this point. These people want shame us into following some rules of decorum they took to Epstein Island. The polite silence, I would say to David Brooks, is what led to the continued abuse and murder of many of Epstein's victims. Nazis, do hurt people and the voting public in a free society need to be told the truth by the press, so we can make informed decisions.

3

u/p4NDemik 9h ago

David Brooks is the moderate/centrist/slightly conservative commentator that many point conservatives to in an attempt to get them to "come back to reality." To the extent that he's successful in that at all, it's because he tries to avoid the shocking or bold statements, regardless of whether they or true or not. That's his whole brand. He believes in it, and honestly maybe when you're trying to de-radicalize folks, his approach might be more effective. I don't know.

But as Republicans like Collins increasingly become actual fascists or as Ossoff puts it, "Neo-Nazis," Brooks should just shut up. There is room for him to go about his writing as he sees fit and maybe de-radicalize a few folks, and also for Ossoff to call it like it is. Both approaches can and should exist, in my opinion.

Hopefully Brooks and others like him will come to the realization that they are doing little other than expressing their discomfort with comments like this. Ossoff isn't wrong, and they have no room to criticize him.

2

u/Pikeman212a6c 7h ago

David Brooks has been pearl clutching since OIF. He can be ignored by all comers from all sides.

1

u/doneandtired2014 2h ago

Hey Brooks,

If it quacks like a Nazi, it goose steps like a Nazi, and it has the same awful policies that the Nazis did, it may not be a Nazi but it definitely is a Neo Nazi.

And the people who gravitate towards that festering pile of moral bankruptcy, intellectual dereliction, and open bigotry is a fucking Neo Nazi.

Fuck them and their feelings, they're Neo Nazis. If they are offended by having a spade called a spade, maybe they should re-evaluate their lives and try not to be abhorrent pieces of shit.

5th time this guy has posted this dudes(his own) videos in 10 days

35

u/audioofbeing 10h ago

I’m reasonably sure this isn’t Jamelle Bouie’s Reddit account, man.

5

u/Shattenkirk 10h ago

I honestly think it is, lol. The last time this account posted a Bouie video, another user accused Bouie of self-posting, and I read the account's comment history (which is now hidden), and the account frequented subs for topics Bouie has talked about, basically used the NYT's style guide and generally has a professional writer's flair

I read all of Bouie's columns and watch his videos, and I'm fairly certain it's him

7

u/audioofbeing 9h ago

I would be very amused if I’m wrong given this account moderates some tiny Jesus focused subreddit.

Given I’ve read Bouie’s breakfast cereal reviews I guess that kind of oddness is also entirely plausible.

0

u/kaneda_z 5h ago

this is exactly correct, plus he posts them as soon as they go live on youtube

9

u/IMadeYouLuke 10h ago

His own? Lmao

6

u/brphysics 10h ago

I'm always amazed when people complain about reposts so much. "If you had been on reddit 24/7, you would have already seen this five times!" I'm on reddit a lot (prob too much) and had not seen this video posted (or any other videos by Jamelle Bouie.) until today.

6

u/chocolateboomslang 10h ago

I love it too. "I saw this already, post something new for me!"

6

u/THedman07 10h ago

And I'm sure they appreciate you pumping up their engagement numbers...

2

u/cskoogs1 7h ago

What’s wrong with that?

0

u/kaneda_z 4h ago

he never replies in the threads he makes and when he was called out last time he privated his posts
