Discussion / Question What games are carried HARD by their music/visuals?

- Sonic Frontiers is just kind of okay, not a travesty of game design or anything, but not great. However, I think the incredible spectacle and backing music in the game's Titan battles single-handedly boosted the game's reputation and memorability by a considerable amount. Even if those aren't particularly great boss fights mechanically, they represent a return to Sonic being totally unashamed of its corny anime-ness, and that shamelessness and sincerity makes it genuinely cool again.

- Kirby's Dream Land 3 is probably on the lower end of the Kirby series gameplay-wise. It's pretty slow, and every level has a borderline mandatory sidequest, some of which are easy and some of which are needlessly obtuse or difficult. On the other hand, though, it has some of the best sprite work on the SNES, with a beautiful pastel/colored pencil style and cute, sometimes low-key music that make for a pleasant, cozy experience regardless of the actual game design.

I still think Sonic Frontiers is a great game, but I will admit I was surprised it got nominated for Game of the Year. It wasn't THAT good. I do listen to the music in the regular though, that shit slaps.

Denshattack!

The gameplay itself is just solid, but the colorful visuals are pretty and the soundtrack is 10/10, my favorite OST of 2026!

not terrible from a gameplay perspective but the style really elevates it

Xenoblade 2.

Gorgeous scenery. Insane music. Everything feels somewhat alive.

Story? Mostly ass. Characters? Mostly ass. What do the designers need to stop showing? The girl characters chest and ass.

Megaman X6 and Black Desert come to mind immediately.

Sonic Frontiers should've just been a character action game. It was so close to being one if they just had any regular enemies that put up a fight and levels built around it.

Kane & Lynch 2.

I love this game for its flawless aesthetic. The whole game feels like you're being followed by a cameraman with a 2000s videocamera running behind you. They really go in on the style too, there is intentional artifacting and the audio clips during loud explosions. Nudity is covered by a pixelated blur as are headshots which makes it seem like the unblurred image would be too graphic to show.

That wild to use Sonic Frontiers as an example. It’s one of the ugliest(maybe bland is more accurate) Sonic games and is 100% carried by how fun Sonic is to control to the point where it’s one of the few 3D Sonic games I’ve 100%ed.

oh it’s ugly fs, I’m referring to the music and specifically the spectacle of the boss fights on that one 😅

Metal Gear games are hard carried by the presentation/setting/atmosphere and the amazing soundtracks. The actual gameplay sucks.
