Europe burned, and went dark. 6 years of war between the French empire and rising Prussia left no victors, only graves. The Austrians - the first to fall, slipped into quiet oblivion as the winter ice melted in 1864, a mauled but united Hungarian Kingdom emerging from its cadaver. Rot devoured what was left; Italian, Polish and Bohemian nationalists all rose as one.
Prussia almost followed. Despite making rapid gains throughout 1864 (even besieging the French city of Metz), the war had lasted 6 years and public will had snapped. If it wasn’t for last minute British naval intervention, the country would have starved. Millions had lost their lives, millions more had nothing to return to. Germans were fleeing to Russia for hopes of a better life. A bitter peace was signed in Munich, recognising Prussian gains but denying them a united Germany.
In the court of Sofia, Tsar Alexander had come to a decision. The Prussians were the superior military force, yet they alone could not replace the Russian support that his reforms had lost. Envoys were sent to Paris and Berlin - the Bulgarian army would march in French boots, and in Prussian formations, yet still under a Russian banner. The Tsar of the Bulgarians needed the help of each to turn his country’s peasant militia into the envy of the Balkans. 5 years passed. Muskets were swapped for French rifles, conscription centres sprang up in every town.
Yet Alexander was no fool. Russia had forbade further advances into Ottoman territory years earlier to appease the British. An offensive war would doom his campaign, perhaps his country. So he waited, waited as Ottoman arrogance returned to Rumelia. Hiking rents, mishandling taxes, imprisoning ‘traitors’. By 1869, the people of Rumelia had taken up arms (French arms - a coincidence? No.). Independence was declared, and when the Ottomans mobilised to put down this insurrection, Alexander Exarch, first elected Tsar of the Bulgarians, stood up to defend his people. His hand was forced… The Greek King, nominally a subject of the Porte, followed his lead.
Advancing Ottoman columns were pushed back through the mud of Plovdiv. For a month, the lines held, as Alexander waited with bated breath for news of whether the Russians would force him back to Sofia. Then news came - the old Tsar in Petrograd was dead, struck down with cholera as he lead his armies in Galicia. Better yet, his heir was a reformer of similar mind to the Bulgarian sovereign. Alexander ordered the advance, raising as his banner not the Eagle, nor the Bear, but the Lion. The die was cast.
Yet as his armies marched, something else stirred in the west. From the Ashes of Spring rose a Phoenix, fierce and vengeful. Prussian diplomats had been busy the last 6 years, visiting each decrepit duchy of the fallen Austrian domain, offering salvation for a dead nation. They would show all that their people were not yet buried. One final war of unification, to put the French and their coalition of false states where they belonged - under the Hohenzollern heel.
