homemade baby food purée

I'm a graduate student in Industrial Design, and I'm working on a class project about homemade baby food purées.

I'm hoping to learn more about parents' real experiences with making baby purées, especially when it comes to portioning, storing, and cleaning up afterward.

I've put together a short survey, and I'd really appreciate it if anyone who has made homemade purées for their baby could take a moment to fill it out!

Survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdvnZPfmRMb3l8B37JY_Nik0jByhmmBRAf2AOaJb16KtVbnZg/viewform?usp=dialog

This is purely for an academic project, not for commercial purposes.

Thank you so much for your help!

FOOD Moving towards veganism with a picky toddler

Hi all! Hope it’s okay to post as a non-vegan :)

Firstly a bit of background - I have eaten plant based in the past, I am fully convinced ethically that I should be vegan, and would like to move in that direction.

It also feels off to me to be feeding animals to my toddler who loves animals and can’t consent to contribute to their death.

So here’s a few questions I’m hoping you might help me with!

  1. Do you have any vegan influencers who are parents and post meal ideas that you’d recommend?

  2. Do you have meal suggestions for a picky toddler that are nutritionally rich? Luckily he loves tofu but is currently not interested in veggies, even fruit most of the time. He’s currently living on a lot of dairy as he loves that, so swaps that are nutritionally similar would be much appreciated!

  3. Those of you with picky eaters, are you supplementing? I know B12 and vit D are the ones usually recommended, but what about iron for example? I’m parenting between two cultures where one is pro supplementation and one is against unless indicated by blood tests, so I’m all kinds of confused!

Thank you so much in advance!

Hey everyone! I'm new to the page and wanted to introduce myself. My name is Malina and I am a mom of 2, vegan and a naturopathic practitioner! I share a lot of meal ideas and recipes on my socials but now that I've finally joined Reddit I'm excited to do the same thing here!

Here's what my vegan kids had for breakfast this morning:

Lentil breakfast patty, broccoli sprouts, beet sauerkraut, sourdough english muffin with PB and apples

HOLIDAYS Thanksgiving w/ vegan 2 yr old who loves turkeys

Hey guys,

I was looking for some advice from others who have already had to deal with this with their own kids. My son just turned 2, loves all animals, but has a special affinity for turkeys. We have multiple families of wild turkeys who wander our yard often. He's grown up watching the mama and baby turkeys. This is the first Thanksgiving we've been invited to go stay at his cousins' house for the holiday. I know they'll try to be accommodating, but I am at a loss for how to navigate the situation.

Even the thought of me having to be around so much death, listening to everyone constantly refer to "the turkey", sitting around the table with it there, etc is going to be emotionally draining enough for me, an adult who has had years to process this. I'm still on the fence about whether or not we should even go. We have very little family in our lives, this cousin is one of the only family members who makes any effort with me, we live in a rural place that makes it challenging for my son to meet many other kids, so I am trying to weigh all the factors. Just curious what others would do? Stay home and have a full vegan spread and avoid the situation all together for at least another year. Or give my son the chance to spend time with family he hardly ever sees, be with kids his own age, but have to figure out explaining the dead turkey on the table to a 2 yr old with limited understanding? I appreciate any insight yall may have 💗

Snacks that aren’t fruit or processed food?

My 18mo used to be a great eater but she’s been getting pickier lately. For snacks basically all she will eat is fruit or processed stuff (Cheerios, puffs, coconut yogurt melts, bars, crackers, etc). For myself, I snack on nuts and popcorn, but those are both choking hazards. I’ve tried veggies and hummus but she is anti-veggie right now unless they’re cooked and mixed in with something else. I just hate how much sugar she’s getting throughout the day (even though it’s mostly natural sugar). Any ideas for healthy vegan snacks for a picky toddler? Or am I overthinking this?

MEDIA Nutrition books for kids?

Hello, wondering if any nutrition books for vegan kids exist? Specifically one written for middle/high school age kids (would be cool if there were recipes or info about veganism too)?

If this doesn't exist, would parents be interested in this type of book for their children?

Thanks for any recommendations or input.

Beans and gas

My baby is 13 months and isn’t the most enthusiastic eater. However, he likes beans! The problem is they always cause him a lot of gas at night, to the point where he is rolling around and crying throughout the night because of gas pain. I give him Simethicone before bed if he’s had beans that day, but it doesn’t seem to help much. It’s making me want to avoid them, which isn’t really a great option because they provide so many nutrients. Anyone with similar experiences or tips?

Vegan kid-friendly options in uk fast food chains

Disclaimer, this is made for vegans that feel comfortable ordering from places that serve animal products. A lot of this list is what some people would consider junk food, and people will obviously have their own beliefs about children having junk food. These are some of the options my kids liked when they were little, but there are also some new menu items on this list. Not everything is certified vegan, but some things it is very clear, eg water, apple slices. If you don’t order from these places yourself this list is still good in case your child goes to a party with any of the fast food chains below served.

McDonalds- One of the harder ones on this list because there are currently only 4 vegan food items after they removed the dippers. I know the McPlant exists but it is too big for some younger kids. The fries are vegan (not in the US, UK only) so you can order a happy meal with fruit instead of a main. If the restaurant refuses to let you do that, you can order fruit, fries and a toy separately. The current fruit options are carrot sticks and apple pieces but this will change. The fruitshoots, water and fruit juices are all vegan. The ketchup is also vegan.

KFC- Also quite hard. Yes, there is a vegan “chicken” burger but again, a kid might find it too big. Unfortunately, the chips are not vegan or vegetarian. However, the corn, side salad, beans, and cajun rice is. Thankfully, they serve bear yo-yos which are vegan, so your child will be able to have a desert. They have both flavours of fruitshoot, robinsons blackcurrant, lipton peach tea and also water, which is all vegan. Again, the ketchup is vegan.

Burger king- The vegan selection here is great, there is a vegan whopper and a vegan royale. Thankfully, the fries are vegan!! The onion rings do not contain animal products but are cooked on the same surfaces if you are worried about cross contamination. I find you can also use the “swap the kids main for fruit” trick here, the kids meal comes with a toy. (note that not all locations have the fruit). Drink wise there is bottled water and innocent smoothies (all vegan). Both of the frozen fanta flavours are vegan, so your child will be able to have a desert.

Costa- We’re really in luck for this one! They have a vegan “ham” and “cheese” toastie!! Other vegan items include the gingernut loaf cake, double chocolate cookie, caramelised biscuit rocky road, oaty flapjack & biscoff cheesecake. The majority of the drinks can be made vegan.

Nando’s- The vegan items on the kids menu include: chips, cucumber sticks, and spicy rice. The pip smoothies that come with the kids meals are vegan. They have sweet potato wedges on the general menu which are also thankfully vegan. The next one is surprising, the garlic bread turns out to be vegan! They recently also added the Peri-Plant-filet which is a plus.

Dominos- They added plant based cheese a while back which is amazing! The thick pizza base is NOT vegan, but the “thin and crispy” base is! If you want a child size vegan pizza, ask for a cheeky little pizza with a thin base and plant based cheese. For some reason the app doesn't let you order a cheeky little pizza with plant based cheese, so unfortunately you would have to do this in store (I have done it before, it definitely can be done). However, I have been in some restaurants where they refuse to swap the cheese and in this situation the only option is to remove the cheese entirely. For sides, the potato wedges and fries are vegan. For the sauce, we’re in luck because there is a plant based garlic and herb dip! For drinks they have water as well as things like coke and sprite (which are plant based, but I know some people don’t like giving their children carbonated drinks).

Pizza hut- They also thankfully have vegan cheese! Unfortunately all the pizza sizes are quite big, so you may have to share! The potato wedges and onion rings are vegan. Sauces, only the tomato ketchup and BBQ sauce are vegan. For the drinks, they have lipton peach tea and water (both vegan).

Chick-fil-a - They really don’t have many plant based options. However, you can use the “swap the main with fruit” trick for this one too. If you are unable to do that you can order the fries and fruit cup separately. You can get an innocent smoothie water (vegan) with the kids meal. The ketchup and BBQ sauces are vegan. Good luck finding something as an adult!

Popeyes- They have a red bean creole sandwich (vegan). If that’s too big for your kid, there are some other vegan items like fries, side salad (you will need to customise it to take out the coleslaw). The BBQ sauce is vegan. For drinks, there is oasis along with carbonated drinks. If any vegetarians are here, there is a mac & cheese poppy meal.

I hope this was helpful! If anyone wants me to cover any others I will do so.

Teenage son chose to not dissect sheep brain

Just wanted to share, my son is 14 and has been raised vegan all his life. He is a freshman in high school and recently the class was dissecting a sheep's brain and he told his teacher he did not want to for ethical reasons. I felt so proud of him for being brave and not afraid to be different from his peers.

DISCUSSION How to navigate a non vegan partner?

My partner is vegetarian but not vegan. His family just eats a standard American diet for the most part. How do I get in front of dealing with this issue before it became complex? I still haven't completely decided what I think is best for our baby as I believe in full autonomy, but, it's something I've been ruminated on during my pregnancy.

FOOD Constipation possibly from Sprout formula?

Long story short my daughter is 6 months old and has been constipated this whole time basically, she’s had normal baby poops (soft and the right color) through out this time but very hit or miss. Lately it’s just rock hard pebbles and very dark, then we’ll cut a suppository in half and do that and sit her on potty and she’ll poop more and it’ll be softer but still dry ya know.

ALL of This is all advice from doctors of course!!! We are currently doing prune juice, prune and other fruit/veggie purées with a little powdered cereal added , even on probiotics and the occasional suppository if she’s really struggling. So I was wondering if other parents have struggle with sprout formula and if you switched to something. We are both vegan, we love the idea of Sprout because it’s the only name in the game world wide, there’s a couple other brands but currently out of stock or closed down not sure, legit can’t get it anywhere we looked.

At this point we are open to switching to a different “plant based” option (one with the non vegan d3 or whatever from sheep’s wool smh) but would rather stay away from real dairy if we can… but I guess if it comes down to it idk maybe we would have to try that.

Just to add, My wife did chemo mid pregnancy she had ovarian cancer that came back beginning of pregnancy. So by the time she was born, my wife’s body was all messed up from chemo and had a surgery coming up to remove last ovary so she didn’t have much luck with breast milk unfortunately. I’m open to any advice I apologize for the novel I’m just a concerned father! Thank you in advance

Veganism is the right choice for the kids.

Post image
191 Upvotes

Parenthood has a way of making you rethink everything you once took for granted. For me, becoming vegan was part of that process. It made me question many things I had simply accepted as normal. But the deeper shift came when I began questioning my own conditioning around animals.

Why do we love some animals, eat others, and treat them so differently? Why do we see animals as food, products, or possessions in the first place? These questions have also changed the way I approach parenting.

I don’t want to simply tell my child, “We don’t eat animals.” I want them to understand why and to develop the habit of questioning what they are taught. The teachings of Acharya Prashant, a famous Indian philosopher, have helped me see veganism as more than a food choice. They have made me reflect on my own desires, consumption, and conditioning. For me, vegan parenting is not just about raising a vegan child. It is about helping a child learn to think for themselves.

That said, I find it difficult at times to explain compassion for animals to my child and to encourage them to give up foods they have been eating and enjoying for a long time. At home, things are easier because dairy products are not available. But at school, other children bring dairy-based foods and often ask him to share. Since none of them are vegan, he is not always able to share food with anyone. Some teachers have even advised him to consume dairy because it is considered healthy.

At times, I have also wondered how to meet the nutritional needs of a growing child on a vegan diet. But after watching a video by Acharya Prashant, many of my doubts were cleared, and I felt more confident that veganism is the right choice for him.

How do you handle situations where your child’s vegan choices are questioned at school or by other adults?

NUTRITION DHA supplements

Hey, has anyone else tried garden of life kids plant omega-3 liquid supplement? I have a six and an eight year-old, and while they take a daily multivitamin, I’d like to start sneaking some DHA into their daily “healthy shakes”. I put lots of things in that shake, including flaxseed and or Chia seeds, but I’m a little worried about DHA.

Does anyone have experience with this brand, or thoughts on this plan?

Thanks so much,

-Mitch

FOOD Food allergen introduction?

Are yall introducing non vegan potential allergens to your babies or no? I’m vegan but my husband is Omni so we will have non vegan foods in the house. The plan is to raise our kids vegan but I’m not sure if I should still introduce potential allergens to her or not during the first year. I would only do vegetarian allergens though, like dairy and egg. No shellfish or fish. My reasoning would be so I’d know if she had those allergies in case she ever consumed something containing egg or dairy accidentally when she’s older and possibly away from me.

While I’m not super comfortable with giving her non vegan foods (I’m an ethical vegan) I will do anything to eliminate possible dangers.

Just curious if anyone has any experience or input from pursuing either route.

Can you get low(er) b12 nooch? (UK)

My toddler (20mo) DEMANDS “more noooosh” or “mo-oosh” on absolutely everything. Even if it’s away in the cupboard out of sight. Sometimes on breakfast porridge too.

I don’t mind giving her some, but obviously you can have too much B12. She also drinks fortified milks too so will also be getting some b12 from that, albeit not enough.

I get the engevita or bosh ones but both are fairly high b12. Is there an alternative that is Lowe?

High calorie nut free snack ideas

Hello! I need some snack ideas for my 2 yo to take to nursery. She takes fruit for one snack but ideally I’d like her to have a higher calorie option for her 2nd one. It has to be healthy and nut free as per their rules. Any ideas/recipes would be hugely appreciated as I’m struggling to think of anything that I wouldn’t add nut butters to!

Mock foods for baby?

Hi! When did y’all start giving your babies or kids mock foods? We use daiya cheese maybe twice a week and impossible nuggets/beyond steak once a week as well. The rest of the time it’s tofu and nut based sauces. So far I’ve just been omitting mock meats and cheeses from baby’s food (he is 10 months old). When did you start adding them? Thank you!

Edit: Thank you everyone for your stories, concerns, and opinions! It sounds like there is a pretty big range on the “starting mock foods” timeline. We will likely start with seitan (the homemade meat) first, and then gradually cycle in some mock meats and cheese after he’s a year old

How often does your family get sick?

My husband, our kids, and I get sick 2-4 times a year, is this normal? I’m so tired of it😩. We eat a balanced diet, take vitamins, supplements during sick season and still get sick like clock work every year. Can this be avoided? My kids are even home schooled.

Food app for starting solids tracking?

Hi! I’m vegan, and my baby is too. I’ve been using the solid starts app and as I’m exploring the recipes and other features, I’m finding the raw meat options quite off putting. I would really rather not see this every time I’m in it. Anyone know if there way to hide these so they stop coming up as suggestions, or another app to use?

TIA!

FOOD Pasta for dinner

First pic is baby’s dinner, second was mine. Sharing here bc I’m finally getting the hang of cooking meals I can share with my baby (10 months next week) and I don’t wanna get flamed for having a vegan baby in the blw groups. Made the minimalist baker best ever meat balls (tweaked the salt) and changed out the spicy arabiatta sauce for a squash “cheese” sauce I made on the fly for him the other day, by the end he was covered in “cheese” and took a few bites out of the meatballs. Little wins are still wins!

FOOD Mom on the go, looking for variety.

I’ve been making breakfast burritos since the twins were born, I love them and mix it up a bit but 7 months in and I’d like some lunch options (now that we routinely leave the house!!) and variety.

I’m not against affordable, kind of wholesome store bought ideas. For lunch I usually have Trader Joe’s Vegetable Kimbap.

Looking for easy, portable items that I can fully prep, freeze, and reheat/thaw.

Current ideas…

Breakfast burritos
Muffin quiche
Breakfast sandwiches
Savory muffins
Calzones
Baked taquitos

Has anyone had success fully assembling then freezing veggie burgers? Sushi? Salad rolls? Samosas?
I don’t want to fry anything and I want to reheat in the microwave.
