Soo I just finished reading part 1 of bloodlines for the first time, even though I read the VA series numerous times before. And it's maybe just something I noticed, but it feels strange. Though I get why it's how it is.
So basically, in the VA, most moroi can't use their magic for anything too powerful, and when they do, even if well trained, they usually get really tired and weak afterwards. While compelling by spirit users seems to take way less, and seems to be useful at any moment.
Now, I noticed some power scaling inconsistencies in the spin off. At the end of VA which takes time roughly a month before Bloodlines, Adrien's healing capabilities are far weaker than Lissa's, and only able to heal minor things. Rose also mentions that he prob wouldn't be able to restore a strigoi. His compulsion seems to be somewhat less powerful too, but still, it's incredibly strong, with or without eye contact. Even when he drinks.
Yet in bloodlines we learn that Adrien's healing was powerful enough to ressurect Jill, which seems to be just as big of a feat if not more than healing a strigoi. How did he get so powerful in healing so fast? And while captured by Lee, his compulsion doesn't even make Lee think twice, which is strange because even without eye contact he should be able to have an effect on him, at least a little, especially since he was sober. Not to mention in the tattoo shop too, he could've compelled his way in, but he chose not to, and it didn't even seem to cross his mind, even though it could've helped enormously. Maybe because he didn't want Sydney to be scared? Not likely. Or it's just not his first instinct like how it is for Lissa? Basically, Adrien got considerably stronger at the start of the book while prob being intoxicated, yet weakened down by the end of it, way more than he ever was.
As for normal moroi, their magic seems amped. Jill could create an entire weapon out water and while it exploded some time after, she didn't seem all that tired afterward. And she's only 15, without the same amount of training Christian had, who still got tired often after fighting with fire, even if less so in the later books. In the first few, it was for sure difficult for him.
I know these differences in power limits and scaling are probably for the plot to develop, because they needed a powerful spirit in the absence of Lissa, yet not too powerful to get them out of everything, while also give a purpose to Jill and help the fight, it was still strange not to have any explanation about this.
What do y'all think?
