๐ Resources Electives/Broadening Units: Important Links, FAQ, & Discussion
Hey there r/UWA!
Posts about easy elective units or advice on specific units are very common here, so in an effort to reduce repetitive posts, this will function as a unit megathread with:
- links to useful resources,
- an FAQ, and
- a place for discussion, where users can ask and answer more specific questions.
If you have a problem or question related to electives units, PLEASE CHECK the links, FAQ, and discussion below FIRST. If you're still stuck, PLEASE COMMENT your question below and before creating a new post. This will help us reduce clutter - thank you in advance!
This post will stay pinned and may be edited in the future. Suggestions for additions to the links and/or FAQ can be left in the comments also.
Links ๐
OFFICIAL RESOURCES:
- UWA Handbook - the most important resource regarding courses and enrolment, contains almost ALL the information you may need.
- (To view handbooks from previous years, head to the archived handbooks. It's important that you follow the rules outlined in the handbook from the year in which you enrolled!)
- askUWA - where your important questions may be answered; there's an FAQ and a place to email your questions to UWA officials.
- Elective choices (from the handbook) - a list of the recommended elective units.
- (Note: this is not ALL the possible elective choices, just official recommendations.)
UNOFFICIAL RESOURCES:
- Best Units Guide - this list compiled by the UWA Student Guild, with contributions from actual students, describes and ranks many elective units. A VERY useful resource if you need some ideas on good electives!
- StudentVIP subject reviews - this site has many features, but this specific part lists MANY units at UWA with reviews and an average score. Reviewers aren't screened for authenticity - but still another VERY useful resource for both choosing electives & preparing for core units.
FAQ โ
What are some easy electives/GPA boosters/etc.?
Resources linked above, particularly the Best Units Guide & StudentVIP subject reviews, will likely contain the answer to this question. Be sure to check those out for student's opinions on elective units!
However, "easy" is subjective - what's easy for you may be difficult for someone else, which is why it's important to consider what you generally struggle with and what you're actually looking for. Are you looking for a unit with low time commitment? One with no exam? One with few assignments?
Thoughts on ____ unit?
Please try not to create these kinds of posts regarding opinions on specific units. Instead, please look for existing comments below or leave your own - that's why we made this post after all!
Discussion ๐ฌ
Please leave any remaining questions or specific queries below in the comments, or answer other people's questions if you can.

๐ข Mod Announcement PSA: Beware of Cults
IMPORTANT TO READ FOR NEW INTL STUDENTS
EDIT: Some comments have informed me that these cult recruiters have been seen on campus. If you encounter one and have a similar experience as below - please notify campus security.
They target international students mainly - but I need to write as Iโve been approached twice in the last week alone.
If youโre in the CBD, mall, etc, and you get approached by two strangers, usually 1 female and 1 male, if they invite you to an โeventโ - they are cult recruiters.
They usually start off the conversation by complimenting you (where did you get โฆ, I like your โฆ). It always ends with them inviting you to an event.
Once you hear โeventโ, just step away from the convo with an excuse. Better safe than sorry.

Serious Did Tony Buti meet with Deloitte for dinner to steer their report?
I know youโre reading this Basilโฆ. Tony Buti was taken out for dinner by Deloitte 4 months prior to the date of their final report. This is from the gift registry declaration he was required to submit. What was discussed that couldnt have been an email or a meeting during office hours? Crooked AF
๐ Resources What happened to past year papers on OneSearch?
I love using past year exam papers to revise for my engineering exams, and was always able to find at least a few for each unit on OneSearch. This semester I'm taking MECH3424, GENG3402 and MECH4502 and there is absolutely nothing on OneSearch. I've even tried searching for previous units where I knew I had access to a bunch of exam papers, but those have seemingly disappeared as well.
Does anyone know what's up? Have these been permanently deleted, or moved to a different site to access? If anyone has a nice archive of past exam papers for the units I mentioned, it would be fantastic if you could send them over to me. Thanks!

WA parliament erupts into chaos as minister details uni merger conversation
theage.com.auPretty embarassing all around today. Even if you do disagree with their politics, good on Liberals for having courage to call out so blatantly.
Interesting what happens from here

Itโs a long shot but if anyone finds anything If they could let me know!

Serious As a recent H1 honours graduate, I support the merge
Iโd much rather my kids have the chance to go to a more competitive, better-resourced uni than I did.

๐ Humour Lol, Cheeky? The West Australian placed a link to Curtin and Murdoch vowing to fight merger right in the middle of article from UWA Chancellor and VC pushing for merger. Article is titled 'WA University Merger Offers Opportunity for Greatness'.............

Archived Version: https://archive.li/m21bQ
Bit cheeky it seems from The West Australian. UWA senior leadership pen this, frankly a bit self-indulgent article titled 'WA University Merger Offers Opportunity for Greatness'. Literally in the middle of the article that speaks about how this can 'bring researchers, infrastructure, and investment together-' the West Australian decided to put in a link to a separate article that other affected Universities do not see this as great and will fight against it...

Also, is this not meant to be an open business case inquiry into the prospects? Why is only UWA VC and Chancellor going so public and literally pushing for this the same week it's been announced and in a way that is clearly pushing heavily for it to happen? It does not help the Steering Committee is also heavily UWA and not the initial impartial non-WA panel as was in 2023. Look here at original 2023 announcement. It was deliberately non-WA for a reason and encompassed Academics (not business-people) 'without any current affiliations or any appointments in WA'.....

If the merger goes ahead, let current students graduate with a degree from their current university
I'm doing BSc Honours and just finishing my 3rd year (1 more to go). I want a degree that says UWA on it. I came to UWA, I chose UWA, I don't want whatever bullshit happens to change that for me. I think that current students should be able to graduate with all their awards under the university they attend, no matter which of the three they go to. Got a couple buds at Curtin who said the same, they want to finish their engineering as Curtin grads. No one knows what it will be, if it will still be UWA or change to something else. I got nothing against Curtin or Murdoch, I just want my degree I leave with to be the degree I started with.

Serious Just curious which staff and students want the merger from any of the unis involved.
If you're not a current or ex student or staff member of the universities please pick the 3rd option to see the results. I haven't met anyone in support of it.

Omg this may be about to get worse. Deloitte's report on UWA may have clear AI generated citation errors

Is Leadership really so tone deaf? Mark Barnaba is heavily affiliated with UWA and Chairs the UWA Investment Committee?
This whole fiasco is farcical imo. Like they are not even trying to keep it as a genuinely independent inquiry into what is good for the state. The VC is referring to Mr Mark Barnaba who is heavily affiliated with UWA for decades and just happens to be steering the Committee to determine the business case for the merger. Yet he is UWA through and through!?
https://www.uwa.edu.au/schools/business/corporate-supporters
He is also an 'External Chair' of the UWA Investment Committee but yet he is also front and centre of UWA Corporate Supporters which refers to his long-standing ties. This is imo really not a great look for UWA given Barnaba is already speaking publicly in favour and is literally the chair of the decision steering committee.
Does UWA leadership genuinely think that people cannot see how transparent this is? Mr Barnaba has already contributed an article to AFR on this issue which just seems ridiculous given he is on the Committee that will contribute to the governments decision making. Is this seriously what's happening rn?
